Message from Dr. S S Badrinath, Founder, The SN Academy.

The SN Academy (TSNA) is avowed to employ a system of educating people in a community or society, in schools, arts & science colleges, imparting knowledge through instruction courses, training classes, and usher in newer training/teaching methodologies including the use of Information Technology. The objective is to teach courses that deal with A to Z in healthcare services.

LOGO: Amidst numerous entries, we have selected the logo which extols education. It proclaims that Education is as important as the eyes — just as light dispenses darkness, Education dispenses the darkness of ignorance.

DIPLOMA: Certificates and fellowships for educational programmes of various durations would be awarded by the academy at the end of successful completion of the course. Importance to practical training would be of utmost importance definitely necessitating smaller number of students per class and longer duration of courses. Both Distance education programme and residential form of education would be imparted.

LOCATION: The corporate office of the Sankara Nethralaya Academy would function temporarily at the main campus of the Medical Research Foundation, . Efforts are underway to construct a separate premise in Mahabalipuram in a period of 2 years.

TEACHING AND TRAINING: Most of the teaching and training is planned to take place at the main campus of the Academy. If some corporate houses require our programme to be conducted in a place other than our headquarters, the same can be considered. We are at present doing a training course for “Titan” for their Titan Eye Plus. Our team would travel out to impart knowledge. E-EDUCATION: Some of the basic and fundamental courses shall be conducted by E–Education methodology. However for the Dr S S Badrinath practical and hands on training the facilities at the SN hospitals shall be utilized.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES: Healthcare industry is likely to expand exponentially. A candidate trained at the Sankara Nethralaya Academy would be at an advantage for having gained a certificate from a well-known institution, besides having gained greater practical knowledge and skill.

Dear Sir / Madam,

With little knowledge I had about Binocular Vision, pencil push-up as the manual exercise and no idea of how that In-office Vision Therapy actually is, I want to learn about it since from so long I was thinking of how I could improve myself in this field. Glory be to God as, of what I was just think of comes true this year with a great opportunity to get train in one of the famous eye hospital, the SANKARA NETHRALAYA Chenna i. BiBeing excited , I prepared myself and in themonth of May my online modldulesttdtarted and it was diduring this time that I received my syllabus which included of maintaining the log book, submission of case reports and assignments. Time passes and soon my first month online got over. Then the very next month my in-house training started at Sankara Nethralaya Chennai. Coming to Chennai I was a little tensed as of what type of people I will meet but, till now I cannot forget the kindness of people there which gives the true example right from the very first person I met. The first person I met was madam Subha who took the trouble to pick me up as well to drop me to the hostel. Being the first time I met her, I was very comfortable with her as she talks to me and was very friendly.

I reached Chennai on the 1st of June and my posting started the next day. In the first few days of my posting I was observing with the seniors. They were so kind and having good skills, they showed and taught me how to manage with the patients and their visual exercises and even guide me through books. My in-house training were in binocular vision clinic and vision therapy clinic and in both these rooms, the seniors were very good and skillful. In Binocular Vision clinic, I enjoyed doing the patients work up under their supervised. In this clinic my mistakes were correct and my doubts were clarified. I found each day is a new day of learning and new points are added to my knowledge which I wish to always carry with me. Besides the normal binocular work up, I also learnt and observed some more special protocol as that of Hess charting, prism trial, double Maddox rod test etc. I think I would not have learnt all this if it is not because of the generousity of the seniors who without hesitation willingly taught and showed me of what I asked.

In Vision Therapy clinic I learnt the steps of giving the therapy to the patients and maintaining their time limit. It was when I came to this clinic that I have seen with my own eyes the actual picture of In-Office therapy. It has one word, but different therapy for different diagnosis under different steps. This clinic was very busy with many patients checked-in and checked-out which thus gives me a lot of experience and practiced. It was busy, but there were also times when the patients were checked out at the same time or they were yet to come, so that was precious time where I can finish my log book, prepared my case reports and assignments.

After doing all this, when I look back I have no regret in choosing this course because I am happy as of what is written in the syllabus hand out is covered especially the case reports and the assignments which makes me feel fruitful and confident when I have someone to review and correct my mistakes. And now this has been my dictionary from time to time which I trust my teacher had seen.

Throughout the time that I had been in SN, there is no time for me to think of loneliness because everyone around me was very friendly. Everyygthing with me flow smoothly till the harvest of my course where before leaving Ihadavivawithmy teacher inchargeandagain my work was reviewed. I was happy to have with viva as I can discuss personally with my teacher as well that I can see my teacher spending time with me.

After all I thank the SN academy for providing this course and gave me the opportunity to study and share this knowledge. I thank Mr. Mahalingam sir for being a good help and guide from the beginning till the end. I thank all the associated friends and teachers. Everything in SN is very unique, I like it and I hope everyone likes it too. And for all I thank Madam Ms. Rizwana who has made all this happen to me. Thank you. I Miss U all.

Dear Mr Mahalingam, Hello and great day. On behalf of the 8th batch Malaysian interns from Twintech Faculty of Optometry, I would like to express our greatest gratitude and appreciation to the management, optometrists and staffs of Sankara Nethralaya for making our 4 months internship here a very memorable and unforgettable experience.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Mahalingam for helping us to coordinate the whole 4 months internship program. All the posting schedules went on smoothly on time which were set. We also want to thank our mentor, Ms. Subha who assist us throughout the whole 4 months. She is willing to spare her time to solve our problems faced. Besides, not to forget the rest of the academic staffs which contributed in helping us as well. We would want to thank all of the optometrists which involve in all of our posting departments. They were very friendly and willing to assist us in gaining practical experience and knowledge. We really appreciate all the efforts which contributed by all of the optometrist involved in.

Throughout this 4 months in India, I would say that this is one of the amazing experience which will be unforgettable. We gained a lot of various exposure clinically after attending different departments. Here, we got the chance to observe and assess various types of rare and common eye diseases due to heavy outflow of patients. This widens our knowledge and experience as an optometrist. It would be very useful for us in the future while seeing patients besides increasing our confidence level while doing a full eye work up. All of the practical exposures cant be obtained theoretically through eye disease books. Week by week postings has create chances for us to know a lot of people in SN. This has expand our social network and we will cherish this friendship when we back to Malaysia by keeping connected through facebook or emails. Tamil and Hindi language were the two languages which I will not forget while doing eye examination. We got the chance to sharpen and learn the language over here with some help from the optometrist as well. Starting was a bit awkward while we speak, but after some time, we speak slightly more fluent.

Looking back at the first day when we just arrive India, some of us felt culture shock as the population over here is larger compared to ours. Especially when we just step down in the Chennai airport, there were so many people waiting at the arrival area. This makes us feel so warm. Along the way to our hostel, honking is the sound which we will never missed hearing. Starting was slightly hard to accept, but after sometime, we got adapted to it even with the train honking sound. The hostel was good as we were having a/c and proper water heater. Over in this Tamil Nadu area, we cant miss seeing an AUTO moving around. Transport wise is not a problem for us but only 1 problem faced is the AUTO does not work according to meter. We learnt barganing skills over here. We also learnt some important Tamil keywords thatwere useful for us to move around.

Regarding the food part, I think that starting was slightly hard for us to adapt to it, but after some time, we begun to consume it as a daily routine. The fruit juices (especially mango) were awesome. We never miss any juice intake. One thing I've learnt over here is that the fruits which were used for making the juices were very fresh, not adding other sweetening syrups. Indian food will be unforgettable for us. I would take this opportunity to thank the canteen staffs for assisting us on our meal. Besides food, we wolud like to thank the transport team for providing us transport throughout this internship.

Lastly, we would like to express or deepest apologize to management, academic staffs, optometrist for all the inconvenience that we had or may caused for the past 4 months. Thank you.

Regards, Malaysian Optometry Interns/Batch 8, Twintech

Testimonial from CCHM Canddate – Dr. Anita Suryanarayan M.D. (Path), Lister Metropolis Laboratory – Chennai

Dear Mr Mahalingam,

“ The certificate weekend course on Hospital Management more than satisfied all the expectations with which I attended this programme”

Though belonging to a Laboratory set up rather a chain of Labs, the problems we face in the industry are the same. there are challenges with Customer Support/ HR/ Supply chain Management/ IT everyday. It is important for us as these affect our customers who are our end users and for whom we take so much care as we have been taught to do. Unless we know as heads we are not able to train our staff and the organisation and end user suffers.

All these topics explained by a wonderful, cooperative and knowleadable faculty very well selected, have brought these points very clear. Even topics like Health Insurance / Legal issues of which we do not know much but need to know, have been very clearly explained.

The topic Operation and Management brought many facts very clear and these we will use for our future Labs and centers. We will even try and use this model for our present facility to minimise energy loss and improve efficiency.

The staff of SN Academy Mr Mahali, Ms Leela, Ms Sreeedevi and others have shown a classical example in care of people, patience in answering queries, updating with information and topics and sending us the presentations.

They are a wonderful team and we are privileged to know them all. From Mr Mahali and his team also we have learned a lot.

My thanks to Dr Badrinath for constituting and understanding the need of training and this wonderful group of people who are the spirit of the Academy.

I look forward to attending more programmes and yes, my candidate for the next course is already selected.

Wish you all the very best” regards, anita Dr. Anita Suryanarayan M.D. (Path), Vice President - Operations (TN & Sri Lanka), Metropolis Healthcare Pvt Ltd .
