Welcome to Tortuga! the Year Is 1667 and You Are a Pirate Sailing the Waters of the Caribbean rk Cit Da ies Vol. I Welcome to Tortuga! The year is 1667 and you are a pirate sailing the waters of the Caribbean. A Spanish Galleon foats nearby, and you’ve talked your crewmates into working together to steal all of its treasure. What you haven’t told your fellow pirates is that you have no intention to share the treasure once you have it. You are still loyal to your native country, and keeping the treasure for yourself will fnally buy you some respect back home. Some of your crewmates have told you that they share your loyalty and that they’ll help you maroon the greedy pirates on your ship to the rocky island of Tortuga. But you’ve seen your friends’ loaded pistols and heard their whisperings of a mutiny. You know that nobody can be trusted... www.facadegames.com 2 - 9 Players • 20 - 40 Minutes • Ages 13+ SET UP 1. Lay out the playing mat in the center of the table. Place the orange explosion token aside. 2. Pull out the needed Loyalty cards based on the table below. Shufe and deal one to each player, face-down. Secretly view your Loyalty card and place it face-down. This is your team. You may not reveal your Loyalty card until the game is over. RULES OVERVIEW layers will be divided into teams of British and French pirates. In games with an odd number of Pplayers, there will also be a Dutch pirate. You will begin the game on either the Flying Dutchman or the Jolly Roger, but the other players on your ship will not necessarily be on your team. During the game you will use Vote cards to participate in Attacks to get treasure from the Spanish Galleon, in Mutinies to maroon selfsh captains, and in Brawls to control the two pieces of treasure on Tortuga. You will also view, reveal, and force other players to reveal Event cards in order to help your friends and harm your enemies. When the Spanish Armada Event card is revealed, the team (French or British) with the most treasure wins the game. Treasure in both ships’ holds and in the French and British areas on Tortuga 3. Enslavement of different peoples was a centuries old custom authorized by the lawofnationsandfundamentaltotheeconomiesofempire.Manumission,thoughexceptional, helped to sustain slavery because it created an expectation of freedom, despite the fact that the freed received punitive consequences. In the sixteenth century, as European empires searched for cheaper and more abundant sources of labour with which to exploit their colonies, the Atlantic slave trade grew exponentially as slaves became equated with racialized subjects. This article presents the case of Haiti as an example of continued imperial practices sustained by racial capitalism and the law of nations. In 1789, half a million slaves overthrew their French masters from the colony of Saint Domingue. After decades of defeating recolonization efforts and the loss of almost half their population and resources, Haitian leaders believed their declared independence of 1804 was insufficient, so in 1825 they reluctantly accepted recognition by France while being forced to pay an onerous indemnity debt. Though Haiti was manumitted through the promise of a debt payment, at the same time the new state was re-enslaved as France’s commercial colony. The indemnity debt had consequences for Haiti well into the current century, as today Haiti is one of the poorest and most dependent nations in the world.

In doing so, I examine piracy and illicit activities such as smuggling and shipwrecking through a new lens. They act as a form of economic engagement that could not only be used by empires and colonies as tools of competitive international trade, but also as activities that served to fuel the developing Caribbean-Atlantic economy, in many ways allowing the plantation economy of several Caribbean-Atlantic islands to flourish. Ultimately, in places like Jamaica and Barbados, the success of the plantation economy would eventually displace the opportunistic market of piracy and related activities. Plantations rarely eradicated these economies of opportunity, though, as these islands still served as important commercial hubs: ports loaded, unloaded, and repaired ships, taverns attracted a variety of visitors, and shipwrecking became a regulated form of employment. In places like Tortuga and the Bahamas where agricultural production was not as successful, illicit activities managed to maintain a foothold much longer.

    4 Nordhoff and Hall’s Mutiny on the Bounty: A Piece of Colonial Historical Fiction Sylvie Largeaud-Ortega University of French Polynesia Introduction Various Bounty narratives emerged as early as 1790. Today, prominent among them are one 20th-century novel and three Hollywood movies. The novel,Mutiny on the Bounty (1932), was written by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall, two American writers who had ‘crossed the beach’1 and settled in Tahiti. Mutiny on the Bounty2 is the first volume of their Bounty Trilogy (1936) – which also includes Men against the Sea (1934), the narrative of Bligh’s open-boat voyage, and Pitcairn’s Island (1934), the tale of the mutineers’ final Pacific settlement. The novel was first serialised in the Saturday Evening Post before going on to sell 25 million copies3 and being translated into 35 languages.
