More than 100 people changed parties prior to the books closing Tuesday for Florida’s presidential primary election set for March 17. “We were busy, but everything went well,” Taylor County Supervisor of Elections Dana Southerland said. According to Southerland, her office processed 147 applications Monday and Tuesday. Of those, approximately 20 were new voter registrations, while the rest were requests to change party affiliations. Southerland kept her office open late on Tuesday to accommodate those who wanted to make a change before the deadline. “We had about a dozen people come in during the extra hours,” she said. “I’m glad we did. “Unfortunately, we had a couple of people come in on Wednesday, and we had to say the books were closed and we wouldn’t be able to process their application until after the election. “The presidential preference primary election is a partisan Republican and Democratic Primary only, therefore only voters who are registered Republican or Democrat will be eligible to vote in the March election,” Southerland said. Those who are registered with other parties or have no party affiliation will not be able to vote during the presidential primary election. Southerland said she mailed every registered voter not in either of the major parties to remind them that they would not be able to vote in the election. Early voting begins for the presidential primary on Monday, March 2, and will run for 14 consecutive days, including two Saturdays and two Sundays. “We’ve mailed out all of the mail ballots that we had on file in the office,” Southerland said. “The last day to request a mail ballot is Saturday, March 2. The Supervisor of Elections office is located at 433 U.S. 19 N. In the election, Democrat voters will have 16 presidential candidates to choose from, while Republicans will have four, including sitting U.S. President Donald J. Trump. Although a number of the candidates have announced their departure from the race, their names will still be on the ballot voters receive. Challenging Trump for the Republican nomination are Roque “Rocky” De Le Fuente, Joe Walsh and Bill Weld. In the Democrat primary, the candidates will include: Michael Bennet, Joe Biden, Michael R. Bloomberg, Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, Julian Castro, John Delaney, Tulsi Gabbard, Amy Klobuchar, Deval Patrick, Bernie Sanders, Joe Sestak, Tom Steyer, Elizabeth Warren, Marianne Williamson and Andrew Yang.
