The White House in updated news has been calling for a herd- immunity as an approach to Covid-19. This is when enough people become immune to a disease to make its spread unlikely. As a result, the entire community is protected, even those who are not themselves immune. It has been reported that there are 80 doctors and multiple medical researchers that have stated that the herd- immunity approach may be the wrong way to go. White House officials just last week outlined a strategy for dealing with the coronavirus and they are pushing for a full reopening of society and citing a document written by three different scientists that supports immunity through natural infection. At this point, her 6-year-old son who had witnessed the beating ran over a mile to his uncle’s house where he told him everything that had happened. A terrified brother of Edward fled to the scene, and just as quickly left to phone 911. Once the police and paramedics arrived, they found Katie was long dead. Her body was covered in blood, and her skull was smashed. The police also found the victim had her internal organs removed, likely done by Edward. Reporters say Edward was saying he thought they could still save her. Sadly their child saw it all. He was charged with involuntary manslaughter with mental illness (the first Amish man to ever serve in prison for homicide). Still severely depressed and distraught, Edward served in prison for four years and received mental health treatment. If you thought he was shunned before the homicide, that was nothing compared to after. The Amish abandoned him, and his family was torn apart. On January 14, 2011, his body was found hanging in a barn off of Miller Station Rd. A message written in the dust below him said, ‘Forgive me please’

A forlorn sigh slipped past her ruby lips as her crystal blue orbs flickered from the window, letting the shades drop and the curtains to fall in place. She wandered over to the coffin, drawing her fingers against the dusty cover as she ignored the growl of hunger and the sharp pains accompanied with it. She sat on the edge, carefully removing the stilettos from her fragile feet, reaching behind her to untie the tightly woven corset. Her nimble fingers weaved between the knots, carefully loosening it before standing to let it fall, silently wandering to the dust coated dresser to take out her nightgown. She slipped the silky material over her head, flattening it out before collecting the corset and hanging it up on the back of her door, along with the petticoat. She drifted back towards the imprisonment of her being, carefully clambering into it and pulling it shut, locking it from the inside. She crossed her fingers together in a prayer like manner before her perfectly round and sapphire blue eyes flickered shut. Her breathing slowed, slowing down to an almost untouchable beat as she drifted into a world where she was free. Scott Atlas, a radiologist and one of Trump's advisors said in a television interview that, “We just had a declaration written and the thrust of the declaration is exactly aligned with the President, that is opening schools, opening society, and protecting the high-risk people, the seniors.” In the document, the Great Barrington Declaration it is promoting focused protection for young people and healthy people so they can live normally and get infected to build up immunity in the population, while working to protect high-risk people. “We know that all populations will eventually reach herd immunity—i.e, the point at which the rate of new infections is stable—and that this can be assisted by (but is not depended upon) a vaccine.” Many scientists are saying this strategy is very flawed, including Anthony Fauci. “Never in the history of public health has herd immunity been used as a strategy for responding to an outbreak, let alone a pandemic. It is scientifically and ethically problematic.” Says Director, General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. It is clear the strategy they are trying to use has many people debating against it stating how it will end up with hundred of thousands Americans dying instead. The three authors of the Barrington Document say that some places might be able to reach herd immunity to at least 25% of people infected. Most epidemiologists estimate it would take between 50% and 70% for a population to reach herd immunity. In September studies found that less than 10% of 28,000 blood samples tested positive for the coronavirus. The herd-immunity strategy is to separate those who are vulnerable from those who aren’t. Scientists and public health experts agree that it would be impossible to separate the vulnerable from the ones who aren’t. The UK tried the herd strategy but found that the result would be 500,000 more deaths. Nobody is even quite sure how long the immunity would last anyways so would it even be worth it? Trying to reach a herd-immunity would result in large waves of infection and allowing the virus to run its course would result in people having long term health problems that would continue to put a huge burden on the economy and Health care system. “It’s quite reckless for the Trump administration to embrace this declaration when for months and months they’ve been ignoring the advice of many of the mainstream leaders in epidemiology” says, Abraar Karan a global health physician.
