6 ExIles EDITOR’S NOTE

have been a lover of clothing, fashion and art from childhood. Through studyingI art and fashion design, and experiencing aspects of different cultures, that love for fashion and art has grown into a passion. It has also allowed me to appreciate the talents and creative spirit of other designers and artisans.

In the years past I have followed Islands of The World Fashion Week and was inspired by the way it celebrates the diversity of work and culture of designers from around the world. This year, as it has been re-branded as Islands of The World Fashion Showcase, I am grateful for the opportunity to be so involved in this phase of growth. Since its premiere in November 2008, Islands of The World Fashion Showcase has served as an avenue for designers from islands around the world to optimize their international exposure and opportunities for business development. This year and in the years to come we will continue to do just that. We also strive to continue promoting cultural diversity and drawing the attention of our audiences toward the global issues that impact our islands.

This May event marks the beginning of new and exciting opportunities for island designers. Through the Exiles online boutique and the television special, designers and artisans will have the opportunity for their work and their brands to reach a much wider market, thus increasing their potential for sustainable business development and success.

I believe in the mission and vision of Islands of The World Fashion Showcase. It gives me great pleasure to invite you on the journey of growth and development for the Showcase and our participating designers. My hope is for you to truly engage yourselves in this spectacular celebration of pure artistry.

Enjoy! Indira Moss Editor/Production Manager

Designer Name: Sharlene Lagon Date of Birth: March 20, 1984 Zodiac Sign: Pisces Age: 28 Place of Birth: St. Lucia Current location of label: St. Lucia Favourite politician/ humanitarian: President Obama

After designing a prom dress for herself at the age of 16, Sharleen J Lagon began designing dresses for her friends and her interest in fashion extended from there. Although she sews, she admits that her strong suit was in pencils, color mediums and paper, thus making designing her mode of expression and later her career of choice.

But, despite her raw talent, she suffered from the negativity most Caribbean designers encounter when it comes to pursuing careers as professional artists.

“I could never see myself as the 9-5 type who woke up at 3 in the morning to make sure I got to work on time. I wanted a career where I could have fun, be expressive artistically and use the gift God gave me to create beautiful things. I was proficient in painting and sketching but people down here can be so negative towards artists and I was discouraged from pursuing a professional career as an artist from pretty much everyone.”

Turning a cold shoulder to the negative perception of art in her country, Lagon continued on and by a stroke of fate saw a fashion design competition commercial on television. She entered the competition and came in second place. Her determination had kept her entering the competition for the next two years. Winning third and second place spots respectively.

Soon after, she took up a fashion design course on the neighboring island of Barbados, learning to sew while taking night courses in garment construction and pattern making. She completed the Fashion Design AA programme in 2009 with honors. Her final project, entitled “L”, ended up being the first collection of her line.

Upon her return home to St. Lucia, she advertised her business, making custom pieces for people, and in May 2012 she was awarded a GenX prize from a local business that held a competition for unique business ideas. The 5 winners of such a prize won XCD$50,000 to start their business. Sharleen Lagon used it to solidify her own.

A graduate from The Art Institute of Ft Lauderdale with an Associate of Science degree in Fashion Design, McIntosh has showcased her pieces at four different fashion shows on her native home turf of Grand Bahama. Not only is she a native of Bahamian soil, but her designs pay homage to the elements of the islands of The Bahamas.

Courtney, who is the head of Luxe, a swimwear and resort wear line, incorporates the vibrant colors of the islands and novelty fabrics such as fine silks and linens into her designs, making a bold impact by its wearer. Her sexy swimsuits, elegant cover-ups, tops and bottoms can be mixed and matched while on a relaxing beach day or for an easy lunch at your favorite restaurant.

The designs also incorporate elements of straw and hand crochet work to fit the preference of every woman, from the conservative and elegant to the edgy but stylishly couture.

Now with her first showcase at IWFS this year, she hopes that it will bring her to the next level in her career as a fashion designer. Her intention is to build her reputation as a designer as well as expand her portfolio and open herself up to any form of potential professional growth.

34 ExIles 35 ExIles A TRIBUTE TO AN ICON: JACKSON L. BURNSIDE III

Jackson Burnside III rocked in the world of Architecture.

His love of the craft and eagerness to experience the world led him to travel to many countries to experience both the unique structures as well as cultures. Mentored by the late Louis I. Khan, Burnside, in his own right, became an architectural icon throughout the Caribbean. In his effort to learn more about the world around him, he in turn taught others how to effectively embrace natural products and merge them with the built environment. Islands of the World Fashion Showcase (IWFS) has created the Jackson L Burnside III Fashion & Design Award to honour this Caribbean legend. THE MAN

Born in Nassau, Jackson Burnside III was a multitalented and respected architect, artist, designer, cultural advocate and educator. He studied abroad at Lincoln University (Pennsylvania) and the Graduate School of Fine Arts of the University of Pennsylvania where he obtained two Masters Degrees in Architecture, including one from the Design Studio of Louis I. Kahn.

He was the owner of Jackson Burnside Limited and served as a visiting professor at the University of Miami and The Caribbean School of Architecture, Kingston, , among other institutions.

A lover of all things Bahamian, he was a Junkanoo co-leader with the Saxons for many years before leaving to form, along with others, the One Family Junkanoo and Community Organization where he was Chairman Emeritus and designer. He was the founder and host of the popular interactive radio show “Junkanoo Talks”.

His devotion to create an awareness of culture went beyond Bahamian waters and he was the recipient of numerous awards and honours, including The Bahamas Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Citizens Award for the Creative and Performing Arts and The E. Clement Bethel Award for Excellence in the Arts.

Along with his wife, he also owned and operated Doongalik Studios Art Gallery where they promoted and showcased the rich art and cultural talents of the country for over thirty years. Jackson was passionately committed to the belief that design that focuses on our native resources can play a major role in the continuous improvement of the physical, social and economic environment of the country and he dedicated his life to ensure that by the year 2020 more visitors will come to The Bahamas for our art, culture and heritage, than those who come now for the sun, sand and sea. He died May 11, 2011.

“His enthusiasm for life itself and for the cultural diversity and richness of The Bahamas was infectious… his legacy in many fields of endeavour from his professional success in architecture to his artistic craft to Junkanoo will endure… a grateful nation will mourn the passage of a native son who made us proud of him, and also made us proud to be Bahamians. -Bahamian Prime Minister, The Rt. Hon, Hubert A. Ingraham, on learning of the passing of Jackson Burnside

THE JACKSON BURNSIDE III FASHION & DESIGN AWARD
