Tutkin puhuttelusubstantiiveja, pronominien ja imperatiivirakenteiden kääntämistä sinutteluna ja teitittelynä sekä puhuttelun kääntämättä jättämistä tapauksissa, joissa puhuttelumuotojen puuttuminen voisi viitata suomalaiselle kielenkäytölle ominaiseen suoran puhuttelun välttämiseen. Olen lähestynyt tutkimusaihetta sotilasinstituution tarkastelun kautta: kyseessä on Erving Goffmanin (1961) määritelmän mukainen totaalinen instituutio, mikä selittää sen ominaispiirteitä, kuten muodollista puhuttelua osana hierarkiaa ja vallankäyttöä pikemminkin kuin sosiaalisena valintana tai kohteliaisuuden merkkinä. Sotilaskielessä substantiivipuhutteluun liittyy käännösongelmia, jotka korostuvat käännöstekstittämisessä, jossa pyritään tiiviiseen ja nopeasti ymmärrettävissä olevaan ilmaisuun. Angloamerikkalaisessa sotilasinstituutiossa, jossa yleisessä käytössä on esimerkiksi yksitavuinen puhuttelusana sir, muodollinen substantiivipuhuttelu on tyypillisesti tiiviimpää kuin suomalaisessa. Epämuodollisessa puhuttelussa on molemmissa instituutioissa enemmän vaihtelua. Koska puhuttelusubstantiivien käyttö on englannissa yleisempää kuin suomessa, erityisesti epämuodolliset puhuttelusanat ovat kuitenkin usein jätettävissä käännöksestä pois. Pronominipuhuttelussa käännösongelman tuottaa se, että englannin puhuttelupronomini you voidaan kääntää joko sinutteluna tai teitittelynä. Käännösongelma on sotilaskielessä pienempi kuin instituution ulkopuolisessa yleiskielessä, jossa odotukset voivat vaihdella, sillä Puolustusvoimissa teitittely on esimiehen ja alaisen välillä muodollisissa tilanteissa yleensä pakollista ja muulloinkin yleistä. Epämuodollisissa yhteyksissä ja toisensa hyvin tuntevien sotilaiden välillä hierarkian ohittavaa sinuttelua kuitenkin esiintyy. Analyysissa tarkastelen puhuttelua sekä muodollisissa että epämuodollisissa tilanteissa televisiosarjan kolmessa jaksossa. Analyysini on lähtökohdiltaan kvantitatiivinen, ja olen valinnut tarkastelemastani 726 puhuttelua sisältävästä repliikistä lähempään tarkasteluun 37 esimerkkiä. Yleinen kysymys, johon pyrin vastaamaan, on se, onko alkutekstissä esiintyvä puhuttelu käännetty sotilaskielen verrattain hyvin tunteva suomalainen kohdeyleisö huomioon ottaen siten, että käännöksessä säilyy sama uskottavuus, jonka alkuteksti saavuttaa sotilasinstituutiossa käytetyn kielen osalta. Erityistä huomiota kiinnitän merkkeihin suoran puhuttelun välttämisestä käännöksessä passiivi- ja nollapronominirakenteilla. Analyysin perusteella vaikuttaa, että puhuttelumuodot säilytettiin käännöksessä verrattain usein. Substantiivipuhuttelua oli poistettu eniten, ja sen vivahteita oli välitetty sinuttelu- ja teitittelyvalinnoilla. Suoraa puhuttelua ei erityisen selvästi vältelty passiivi- tai nollapersoonarakenteilla, joita oli havaittavissa vain pienehkö määrä; sen sijaan suurin osa käännöksessä vältetystä puhuttelusta selittyi av-kääntämisen ominaispiirteillä ja erityisesti tarpeella tiivistää ruututekstiä. Puhutteluvalinnat olivat yleisesti selitettävissä sotilasinstituution hierarkkisen rakenteen tai puhujan ja puhuteltavan sosiaalisten suhteiden kautta, ja usein merkitystä oli molemmilla. Sotilaspuhuttelu vaikutti yleisesti idiomaattiselta, ja käännösratkaisut noudattivat pitkälti suomalaisessa sotilasinstituutiossa esiintyviä tapoja ja käytäntöjä.     Russian Military Culture during the Reigns of Catherine II and Paul I, 1762-1801 by Eugene Miakinkov A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Department of History and Classics University of Alberta ©Eugene Miakinkov, 2015 Abstract This study explores the shape and development of military culture during the reign of Catherine II. Next to the institutions of the autocracy and the Orthodox Church, the military occupied the most important position in imperial Russia, especially in the eighteenth century. Rather than analyzing the military as an institution or a fighting force, this dissertation uses the tools of cultural history to explore its attitudes, values, aspirations, tensions, and beliefs. Patronage and education served to introduce a generation of young nobles to the world of the military culture, and expose it to its values of respect, hierarchy, subordination, but also the importance of professional knowledge. Merit is a crucial component in any military, and Catherine’s military culture had to resolve the tensions between the idea of meritocracy and seniority. All of the above ideas and dilemmas were expressed in a number of military texts that began to appear during Catherine’s reign. It was during that time that the military culture acquired the cultural, political, and intellectual space to develop – a space I label the “military public sphere”. This development was most clearly evident in the publication, by Russian authors, of a range of military literature for the first time in this era. The military culture was also reflected in the symbolic means used by the senior commanders to convey and reinforce its values in the army.

Griffiths) This dissertation explores the relationship between the state and the nobility in post-Petrine Russia (1730s-1750s). It focuses on educational policies pursued by the state: specifically, on the establishment and operations of the Noble Cadet Corps and on the reform of noble service in 1736-1737; it also explores the reaction of the nobility to these policies. Traditionally, historians have viewed these measures as concessions granted by the state to the nobility in the aftermath of the succession crisis of 1730. Using a large body of unpublished sources from the archive of the Noble Cadet Corps and the records of the Heraldry Department, this dissertation argues that in the 1730s the government of Empress Anna conducted a campaign of social disciplining with the goal of fashioning a “true nobility” out of the existing elite. Specific changes in the system of noble service, such as allowing the nobles some say in choosing their career path and mode of schooling, were not a result of any political pressure from the nobility, but rather were motivated by the changing theoretical notions of human governability.

She earned a B.A. at Simon Fraser University in 2001, an M.A. from Simon Fraser University in 2003 under the supervision of Martin Kitchen, and an A.M. from Brown University in 2004. She has a forthcoming article in Contemporary European History entitled “Catholic Priests as German Soldiers: Georg Werthmann and the Military Chaplaincy under the Third Reich.” She has taught an array of classes, including her own European History survey class at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2008 and a seminar on Holocaust narratives. She was also involved for two years as a research assistant with the multidisciplinary and international project Borderlands: Ethnicity, Identity, and Violence in the Shatter-Zone of Empires Since 1848, co-directed by Omer Bartov at the Watson Institute for International Studies.
