The Association is totally independent of the Australian Defence Force. I am Public Health Physician and specialist Medical Administrator by training, with a background in disaster medicine and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defence. I have held various editorial positions and still sit on various editorial boards for journals as diverse as Australian Health Review, Military Medicine and Emerging Health Threats. In Australia records were kep t in each State of trained nurses appointed to the reserve and willing t o serve in time of national emergency, but the reservists were given n o training in military procedures, and no attempt was made to use their services even in militia training camps, from which the sick were sen t to civil hospitals. A matron-in-chief attached to the staff of the Director - General of Medical Services at Army Headquarters administered th e A.A.N.S., and in each State there was a principal matron who was respon- sible to the Deputy Director of Medical Services . The matron-in-chief an d principal matrons were required to give a certain number of days eac h year to military duty . From 1925 to 1940 the Matron-in-Chief was Miss G. M. Wilson. Late in 1940 Miss Wilson was sent overseas as Matron-in-Chief of the A .I.F. abroad, and Miss J. Sinclair Wood was appointed Matron-in-Chief a t Army Headquarters, where she served until 1943 . On her return to Aus- tralia in 1941 Miss Wilson retired . By this time Miss A . M. Sage, who had been in the Middle East, had also returned to Australia . Miss Sage took over as Matron-in-Chief, serving in this capacity until her retire- ment in 1952 .

    Russian Military Culture during the Reigns of Catherine II and Paul I, 1762-1801 by Eugene Miakinkov A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Department of History and Classics University of Alberta ©Eugene Miakinkov, 2015 Abstract This study explores the shape and development of military culture during the reign of Catherine II. Next to the institutions of the autocracy and the Orthodox Church, the military occupied the most important position in imperial Russia, especially in the eighteenth century. Rather than analyzing the military as an institution or a fighting force, this dissertation uses the tools of cultural history to explore its attitudes, values, aspirations, tensions, and beliefs. Patronage and education served to introduce a generation of young nobles to the world of the military culture, and expose it to its values of respect, hierarchy, subordination, but also the importance of professional knowledge. Merit is a crucial component in any military, and Catherine’s military culture had to resolve the tensions between the idea of meritocracy and seniority. All of the above ideas and dilemmas were expressed in a number of military texts that began to appear during Catherine’s reign. It was during that time that the military culture acquired the cultural, political, and intellectual space to develop – a space I label the “military public sphere”. This development was most clearly evident in the publication, by Russian authors, of a range of military literature for the first time in this era. The military culture was also reflected in the symbolic means used by the senior commanders to convey and reinforce its values in the army.

    Title: Medical Professionals in Remote and Extreme Environments: A Mission to Mars Authors: Hsu, Michael M., Coffey, Christanne H., Witucki, Peter and Sloane, Christian. Abstract: To give a representative overview of medical professionals working in today’s remote and extreme environments, we consider the following teams and organizations: • Expeditions on 8000m peaks led by accredited guides of the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) or International Federation of Mountain Guides Association (IFMGA) • Everest Base Camp Medical Clinic (Everest ER) in Nepal • US Antarctic Program (USAP) • Medical Departments aboard US Navy ships and submarines • US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) Corpsmen and Medics • US Navy Diving Medical Officers • Crew Medical Officers (CMO’s) aboard the International Space Station After reviewing the practice environments and medical training of the various teams, we consider the medical qualifications of a hypothetical future team embarking on a mission to a particularly remote and extreme environment, a human spaceflight mission to the surface of Mars. Introduction: This article explores the qualifications and training of current practitioners of medicine operating in remote and extreme environments. Remote environments have limited access to rescue and hospital care. Extreme environments have exposure to temperature and pressure extremes, radiation, as well as exposure to significant mechanical hazards, including from enemy action during military operations. Several environments combine these descriptions. A prospective human spaceflight to Mars would operate within remote and extreme environments through the entirety of the mission. As observed by Dr. HD Backer, MD, “Wilderness medicine not only overlaps with sports medicine, but also emergency medicine, military, occupational, and travel medicine and international health” and “It shares with military medicine an intense interest in environmental stresses and hazards, field management and mobile response” (Backer, 1995).
