SKYE & LOCHALSH DISTRICT COUNCIL Skye & Lochalsh District Council extends a warm welcome to Mod Eilean a’cheo and wishes it every success. 8 President’s remarks Welcome to Mod Eilean A’ Cheo — the first National Mod ever held in the Isle of Skye. According to the latest census figures 53.6% of the population of Skye and Lochalsh are Gaelic speakers and we suspect that the percentage is considerably higher for Skye on its own. So we look forward to a Mod where the Gaelic language is predominant. We look forward to hearing Gaelic spoken freely and extensively in the highways and byways, in the halls and in the places of residence. Though the latest figures for the number of Gaelic speakers are dispaoointing there are certain rays of hope. The number of speakers in the Gaelic heartland has been maintained and a comparison between the 1961 and 1981 figures for the whole of Scotland shows that there has been little significant change. This suggests that the fairly rapid dechne in the number of speakers upwardup to 1961 trend has canbeen be halted.
