I'm a professional musician, composer and music tutor.

I'm delighted to announce that I will now be giving individual music lessons for one day a month in my home at Cherrygrove, Grantown- on-Spey. I have had enquiries from musicians from all over , as well as from the local area.

My mother, Marie-Lousie Napier, taught piano and clàrsach pupils regularly at Cherrygrove for over 25 years. It's a special thing for me to continue this family tradition.

1 hr = £34 1.5 hrs = £48 2 hrs = £60

I am a member of the Musician’s Union and use MU rates. I have full public liability insurance. Students who are travelling greater distances have tended to opt for 2-hour lessons. Please note for a refund of lessons fees, cancellation must be made within 48 hours of lesson time. Hamish Napier, the Strathspey-born multi-instrumentalist is much in demand as a composer, arranger and performer.

After 16 years as a key musician on the vibrant folk music scene in , he has recently returned to his native Highlands - the source of inspiration for his recent works The River and The Railway. He is currently writing his third solo album The Woods, to be released 2020.

Hamish is one half of the bold traditional duo Nae Plans with fiddle player Adam Sutherland and also performs regularly with Ross Ainslie, Jarlath Henderson and Gary Innes. He regularly co-writes and tours with Duncan Chisholm, and was integral to his latest album, Sandwood (Scots Trad Music Award Album of the Year).

Hamish has appeared on BBC Radio Scotland as a presenter and performer. He has played at many of Scotland's major concert halls and has toured throughout Europe and North America, appearing at world music festivals and on national television. Hamish has worked with & Karen Matheson (Capercaillie), Julie Fowlis, Eddi Reader, Blue Rose Code and the late Martyn Bennett.

EXPERIENCE With over 20 years of experience as a professional musician I strive to focus on the most practical and essential skills in my teaching.

VARIETY As a Scottish folk musician, I teach both traditional and contemporary folk tunes. I can also provide introductions to jazz, blues, pop and classical music.

STYLE I aim to guide students to discover and develop their own musical voice.

TEAMWORK I can guide students to become better ensemble players.

PERFORMANCE Guidance in performance preparation and mindset.

MOTIVATION I tend not to focus on exams/competitions as I believe in focusing on wide goals.

METHOD I teach by ear and also with written music. I can recommend great listening material and approaches to transcription MATERIALS Students are encouraged to record the lessons. I also provide teaching resources free of charge, and can recommend excellent tutor books and online videos.

3 of 4 TEACHING EXPERIENCE

For 8 years Hamish taught on the BA Traditional Music course at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS), teaching theory, composition, piano, flute, ensemble playing and stagecraft.

He has a first-class honours Music degree from Strathclyde University and received their award for composition. He was awarded a scholarship to study for a year at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied jazz piano and composition.

On his return from the US, he has been much in demand as visiting lecturer at schools, colleges and universities, including Universities in of Cork, Limerick and Newcastle and Plockton's National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music. Several of Hamish's former private students have gone on to study music at higher education level.
