RELIGIOUS CONTROVERSIES IN PLYMOUTH COLONY by Richard Howland Maxwell Pilgrim Society Note, Series Two, June 1996 Plymouth Colony was born out of a religious controversy and was not itself immune to such controversies. The purpose of this lecture is to consider some of those controversies in order that we may better understand the Pilgrims, their attitudes, and their relationships with some other individuals and groups. We will start with some background concerns central to the identity of the Plymouth group, then move on to consider the relationships the Pilgrims had with some of their clergy, and focus finally on two groups who were not welcome in Plymouth or any other English colony. I wish to begin with two pairs of terms and concepts about which we seem often to find confusion. The first pair is Pilgrims and Puritans - or more accurately, Separatists and other Puritans. Some of you have heard me expound on this theme before, and it is not my intention to repeat that presentation. To understand the Pilgrims, however, we need to understand the religious and cultural background from which they came. We need also, I think, to understand something about their neighbors to the north, who shared their background but differed with them in some important ways. That shared background is the Puritan movement within the Church of England. The most succinct description of Puritanism that I have read comes from Bradford Smith’s biography titled Bradford of Plymouth. Smith wrote: Puritanism in England was essentially a movement within the established church for the purifying of that church - for ministers godly and able to teach, for a simplifying of ritual, for a return to the virtues of primitive Christianity. -

Griffin advisor, mentor, friend ii ABSTRACT Since the Revolutionary War, American historians, literary artists, and social commentators have undertaken a retroactive search for an acceptable myth of origin predating the Revolution. While the war itself has been endlessly and successfully deployed as a sterling founding moment, that claim alone has proved insufficient for several reasons. First, Americans have long been ambivalent about their pre-Revolution Puritan heritage. The new republic emerging from the revolutionary effort rested on ground previously inhabited by British colonists (and others) since the 1620s, but the colonial past did not readily speak to the feisty, independent, and distinctively AAmerican” self-image that mythologized during and after the war . Additionally, by the 19 th century, when the writing of New England history came prominently into vogue, quite a few pages of the Puritan chapter had become embarrassing. Something else was needed: an event earlier than the shot heard round the world in 1775, and a governing image more manly than the standard figure of the pious Puritans. When Nathaniel Hawthorne =s stories AEndicott and the Red Cross @ and AThe May- Pole of Merry Mount @ entered the nubile world of American literature in the 1830s, Hawthorne seemed to have answered that call. -

Nowak 2015 Introduction The Puritans left England because of Roman Catholicism. Either because of perceived threats by Catholics or Pseudo-Catholics or their detestation of the continued presence of Catholic influence in church, government, and society, Puritans believed there existed a better way of life outside the sway of Catholicism. The people who left England during the seventeenth century and founded the colonies of New England – Massachusetts, Connecticut, Plymouth, Rhode Island, and New Haven – did so in the spirit of religion and reform. Born from the turmoil of religious persecution and political experimentalism, New England Puritanism – which is the primary focus of this discussion – created a unique overarching society that focused on godliness, Biblical law, substantive justice, participation, and cohesion. -

Brooke, Advisor Dr. Alan Gallay Dr. David Cressy Copyright By Larry Alexander Skillin 2009 ABSTRACT My dissertation explores the output of the colonial American printing press in its formative years, noting a transformation over time that opened doors to wider participation in public affairs. During its first half century, the press was used solely as an outlet for official pronouncements and proclamations that were designed to be passively read and accepted by the people. Beginning in the late 1680s, new presses in rival jurisdictions, religious controversies, and political revolutions provided a new context for authors and printers, who began issuing a greater variety of documents in previously suppressed genres. As authority splintered, multiple perspectives on religious and political matters appeared in dialogue with one another via controversial pamphlets, asking readers to serve as arbiters and participants in shaping public opinion. Such links between communications, public opinion and the rise of democratic institutions are critical to the emergence of the public sphere, a phenomenon once exclusively discussed in the context of the late eighteenth century in Revolutionary Europe and America. Recent scholarship on early-modern England, however, has discovered links between press expansion and religious and political controversies dating back to the sixteenth century. -

BIBLICAL TEXTS AND THEMES IN AMERICAN PURITAN PREACHING, 1630- 1700 ALLEN CARDEN Biola University La Mirada, California 90639 While the American Puritans and their sermonic literature have been studied perhaps more thoroughly than most other topics in American church history, some basic questions still remain that have not been dealt with either accurately or sufficiently. Two such questions will be the focus of this article: (1) Did the Puritan clergy preach predominantly from the OT or from the NT? (2) Are there any thematic patterns discernible in their preaching, and if so, what are they? Data for this study consist of 466 extant sermons and theo- logical treatises in sermon form preached and written between 1630 and 1700 in the five Massachusetts towns of Boston, Cambridge, Dedham, Dorchester, and Roxbury. These five communities were selected because their early founding (prior to 1640) permits an analysis of the sermons of three generations of clergy prior to 1700. The year 1700 was selected as an appropriate ending date, since it was the seventeenth century that contained the era of Puritan religious dominance and exclusiveness in New England. While no claim is made that the sermon sample includes every extant sermon from these towns, I believe that a large majority of such sermons have been included. 1. OT and NT Usage It has been assumed by at least one Puritan scholar, Emory Elliott, that the selection of sermon texts from the NT indicated sermons dealing with "mercy and grace" and a "gentle, loving, and protective Christ," while sermon texts from the OT dealt with "the image of the angry and 'wrathful God the Father." Increase Mather's Friends: The Trans-Atlantic Congregational Network ofthe Seventeenth Century FRANCIS J. BREMER IT HAS BECOME fashionable for colonial historians to em- phasize the similarities between English and New England societies ofthe seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Scholars such as Timoth H. Breen and David G. Allen have demon- strated the persistence of English communal institutions and values in New World settings.^ Investigators of ideology have shown that much ofthe thought of America's eighteenth-cen- tury revolutionaries was inspired by the English Common- wealth tradition.2 Studies have demonstrated that throughout An earlier version of this paper was delivered to the Columbia University Seminar in Early American Historj'. JOHN COTTON AND THE WORK-ETHIC Dr. Lois Eveleth Every American knows how to define wealth, does he not? Wealth is money and property. It is assets. It is a strong portfolio, despite the current downturn in the market. If we press the question by asking how much money, property, assets are required of a person to be considered wealthy, an answer is not so easy. One may consider himself wealthy with a net worth of any amount at all, if that amount provides the lifestyle and contentment he seeks. On the other hand, if he be covetous, the estates of one hundred men would not make him content, as the Puritan minister John Cotton wrote. Perhaps knowledge is wealth. Perhaps virtue is. A wisdom which appreciates human existence and experience may also be wealth, perhaps the most difficult of all to acquire. -
