P a g e | 1 “AN HONOURABLE ESTEEME OF THE HOLY WORDS OF GOD”: PARTICULAR BAPTIST WORSHIP IN THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY “I value not the Practice of all Mankind in any thing in God’s Worship, if the Word of God doth not bear witness to it” Benjamin Keach 1 In the mid-1630s, a teenager of Welsh descent by the name of William Kiffin (1616-1701), who had been orphaned as a young boy and subsequently apprenticed to a glover in London, became so depressed about his future prospects that he decided to run away from his master. It was a Sunday when he made good his escape, and in the providence of God, he happened to pass by St. Antholin’s Church, a hotbed of Puritan radicalism, where the Puritan preacher Thomas Foxley was speaking that day on “the duty of servants to masters.” Seeing a crowd of people going into the church, Kiffin decided to join them. Never having heard the plain preaching of a Puritan before, he was deeply convicted by what he heard and was convinced that Foxley’s sermon was intentionally aimed at him. Masters While many biographies of missionary William Carey have been written over the last two centuries, with the exception of John Clark Marshman’s “The Life and Times of Carey, Marshman and Ward: Embracing the History of the Serampore Mission”, published in the mid-nineteenth century, no major work has explored the history of the Serampore Mission founded by Carey and his colleagues. This thesis examines the roots of the Serampore Mission in Reformation theology. Key themes are traced through John Calvin, the Puritans, Jonathan Edwards, and Baptist theologian Andrew Fuller. In later chapters the thesis examines the ways in which these theological themes were worked out in a missiology that was both practical and visionary. The Serampore missionaries’ use of organizational structures and technology is explored, and their priority of preaching the gospel is set against the backdrop of their efforts in education, translation, and social reform. AWEJ for Translation & Literary Studies, Volume2, Number 1, February 2018 Pp. 97-105 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.24093/awejtls/vol2no1.7 The Representation of Puritans in William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night Rachid MEHDI Department of English, Faculty of Art Abderahmane-Mira University of Bejaia, Algeria Abstract This article is a study on the representation of Puritans in William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night; or, What You Will, one of his most popular comic play in the modern theatre. In mocking Malvolio’s morality and ridiculous behaviour, Shakespeare wanted to denounce Puritans’ sober society in early modern England. Indeed, Puritans were depicted in the play as being selfish, idiot, hypocrite, and killjoy. In the same way, many other writers of different generations, obviously influenced by Shakespeare, have espoused his views and consequently contributed to promote this anti-Puritan literature, which is still felt today. This article discusses whether Shakespeare’s portrayal of Puritans was accurate or not. To do so, the writer first attempts to define the term “Puritan,” as the latter is quite equivocal, then take some Puritans’ characteristics, namely hypocrisy and killjoy, as provided in the play, and analyze them in the light of the studies of some historians and scholars, experts on the post Reformation Puritanism, to demonstrate that Shakespeare’s view on Puritanism is completely caricatural. Cover Page The handle http://hdl.handle.net/1887/22159 holds various files of this Leiden University dissertation Author: Pederson, Randall James Title: Unity in diversity : English puritans and the puritan reformation, 1603-1689 Issue Date: 2013-11-07 Chapter 3 John Downame (1571-1652) 3.1 Introduction John Downame (or Downham) was one of the greatest exponents of the precisianist strain within Puritanism during the pre-revolutionary years of the seventeenth century, a prominent member of London Puritanism, and renowned casuist.1 His fame rests chiefly in his nineteen published works, most of which were works of practical divinity, such as his four-part magnum opus, The Christian Warfare (1604-18), and his A Guide to Godlynesse (1622), a shorter, though still copious, manual for Christian living. Downame was also known for his role in publishing two of the most popular theological manuals: Sir Henry Finch’s The Summe of Sacred Divinitie (1620), which consisted of a much more expanded version of Finch’s earlier Sacred Doctrine (1613), and Archbishop James Ussher’s A Body of Divinitie (1645), which was published from rough manuscripts and without Ussher’s consent, having been intended for private use.2 Downame also had a role in codifying the Westminster annotations on the Bible, being one of a few city ministers to work on the project, though he never sat at the Westminster Assembly.3 Downame’s older brother, 1 Various historians from the seventeenth century to the present have spelled Downame’s name differently (either Downame or Downham). GWENDOLYN DA VIES Consolation To Distress: Loyalist Literary Activity in the Maritimes THE LOYALIST MIGRATION INTO THE Maritime provinces has often been examined for its social, economic, and political impact, but it is also to the Loyalists that literary historians must turn in any discussion of creative activity in the area during the early years of its cultural development. Among the approximately 30,000 refugees settling in the region were a number of the most active literary figures of the Revolutionary war period, including such well- respected Tory satirists as Jonathan Odell, Jacob Bailey, and Joseph Stansbury, and a number of lesser-known occasional writers like Mather By les, Jr., Roger Viets, Joshua Wingate Weeks, and Deborah How Cottnam. Bringing with them a sophistication of literary experience and a taste for lyric and satiric writing hitherto unknown in the region, these authors were part of a wider Loyalist cultural phenomenon that saw the founding of a literary periodical, the establishment of schools and classical colleges, the endorsement of theatrical performances, the development of newspapers and printing shops, the organiza tion of agricultural and reading societies, and the writing of polite literature as part of the fabric of conventional society. Looking to their old life as a measure of their new, Loyalist exiles in the Maritimes did much to develop the expectations, structures, and standards of taste necessary for the growth of a literary environment. Although economics, geography, politics, and personal differences militated against their founding a literary movement between 1776 and 1814 or leaving behind an identifiable literary tradition, the Loyalists did illustrate the imaginative and cultural possibilities awaiting a later, more securely-established generation of writers. -

Introduction Other Voices: Dissenting Women Mary Franklin (d. 1711) was the wife of the Reverend Robert Franklin (1630–1703), one of some two thousand Nonconformist ministers who were “ejected” from their pulpits and their livings on Black Bartholomew’s Day,1 August 24, 1662, following the Restoration of Charles II (1630–1685). In May 1660, Charles returned from exile in Europe, beginning the Restoration of the monarchy. He was crowned on April 23, 1661. Though for many English subjects the Restoration was a joyous occasion, for the Dissenters,2 and especially for ministers and their relations, these became times that tried their souls. Mary Franklin wrote a narrative of her experi- ence of these times, taking up, late in life, one of her husband’s incomplete sermon notebooks, turning it upside down, and using its blank pages for her purposes.3 She wrote about her life as a minister’s wife and her family’s suffering under a govern- ment that exacted religious conformity to the Church of England as a measure of loyalty to the crown. She also recorded the triumph of God’s providences through it all. She did not seek publication of her brief, detailed, and moving testimony but rather seems to have kept the notebook within her family until her death, after 1.
