School Breakfast – Good for Kids and Good for Parents!

Many busy families find it difficult to make sure that kids are eating a healthy breakfast before they go to school in the morning.

It can be challenging to find healthy foods kids like to eat. Sometimes children aren’t hungry right after waking up but many are hungry when they arrive at school. Fortunately, Kyrene has a great breakfast program for all students and it is available at school every day.

If morning meals are difficult for your family, let the Kyrene School Breakfast Program help!

(Breakfast is $1.00 and reduced-price is $.30)

Please visit www.kryene.org/foodservices for breakfast serving times, menus, free or reduced-price application information and other meal service information.

UPCOMING THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY There will be no school and our office will be closed in observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday, November 24 and 25. Is Your Student Leaving Early or Absent for Thanksgiving? With Thanksgiving Break coming up next week, the KMS Office asks for your assistance. The days before any holiday always bring a larger number of absent students or students being pulled out of school early. In addition, our staff will be ending the week with different events all over campus which often means scheduled class times are altered. We would like to remind you:

 If you are picking your student up any time during school hours, they must bring a note to the office before school starts, stating the time they will be picked up and the purpose. The office will then give the student a pass to be excused from class at the specified time and they will meet you in the office. You must also present a valid Photo ID to check your student out early.

 If your child is absent or going to be late, you must always call the 24-hour attendance line at 480.541.6601 or they will be marked Truant (Kyrene Family Handbook Page 8). If you know in advance that your child will be absent, please call it in ASAP.

We want to hear from you! Take a moment to complete a survey on the Superintendent’s Priorities. The Kyrene staff, parents and community are invited to participate in an online survey on the Superintendent’s priorities (Middle School Redesign, PreK-8 Dual-language, PreK-8 Kyrene Traditional Academy and exploration of an International Baccalaureate Program). If you do not have computer/internet access, you may go into the front office of any Kyrene school and complete the survey online there. The survey will remain open until midnight, Friday, December 2.

Community forums featuring presentations on these priorities were held November 9 and 15. A link to the 11/15 meeting and timetable on the presentation for each priority plus the Q and A, are available below for those who were unable to attend.

The forums and the online survey are part of the initial planning phase, which includes collecting feedback from parents, staff and the community on possible options for each of the priorities. It is important to know that no decisions have been made on any of the options being considered.

We will present the options, a summary of the preliminary results of the survey, and feedback collected from the community forums at a Study Session on November 22. We will continue to collect feedback in advance of the Governing Board meeting scheduled for December 6. At that meeting, the Board will provide the District with direction on how to proceed.

With that direction, we will identify specific details, including fiscal impact, staffing needs and professional development and logistics, and return to the Board in January with a final plan to be implemented in the 2017-18 school year.

You can view the November 15 meeting here.
