Index to the Journal of the New Zealand Institute of Architects The journal of the NZIA was published under several titles (including Proceedings of the New Zealand Institute of Architects, Journal of the New Zealand Institute of Architects) NZIA Journal, New Zealand Architect, Architecture New Zealand) over the years and was not indexed anywhere in its early years. (More recently it has been selectively indexed in Index New Zealand.) Three Architecture Librarians at Victoria University of Wellington compiled an index of all the articles published in it from 1912- 1990. This index was published in 3 issues of the VUW School of Architecture’s Working Paper Series covering 1912-1980 (WP 13), 1981-1985 (WP23) and 1986-1990 (WP 25). Entries are arranged alphabetically by architect, building type/subject, place, author, and title. xx is used in some places to indicate ‘see’, referring the reader to an alternative heading for information. "1 .j INTRODUCTION In 1982 a cumulative index to the journal of the New Zealand Institute of Architects (under its many variations in name!) was published as Working Paper WP82-13. Susan Brcokes who compiled the index continued indexing issues as they appeared, a task I tcok over in late 1983. The value of the original index has been proved time and again when answering questions from library users. It is hoped this five-yearly cumulated supplement will prove as useful. STRUCTURE OF THE INDEX In .general the structure follows that of the earlier index - one alphabetical sequence of entries which ma.y be .accessed from some or all of the following points:- . 1. architect/engineer/designer/partnership Blair, John. Base amenities building Coronet Peak. 5,1984:7 Beca, Carter, Hollings & Ferner. Greta Point marine research facilities, Wellington. 3,198324-31 Cross references are given between partners' names. e.g. Carter X Beca 2. building type/subject Recreation spaces - Base amenities building Peak. 5,19847 Subject headings are taken from the Construction Industry Thesaurus 3. place Queenstown - Base amenities building Coronet Peak. 5,19847 4. author Beard, James. Clubs, Shebangs and Warrens. 5.198521-26 5. title Clubs, Shebangs and Warrens. J. Beard. 5.198521-26 During the time covered by this index the journal had the title New Zealand architect and was numbered according to year and issue number for that year. This is expressed in the index as number, year: pagination e.g. 5,198521-26 Books reviewed are listed under the subject heading "Reviews". Reviewers names are not indexed. As noted in the previous index information is taken from the publication itself which may lead to minor variations in names or partnerships. It is a wise practice to check for a building under place or typelsubject as well as under the architect's name in case this was omitted in the original reference.
