4 COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

Michael R. Pompeo Distinguished Fellow at the Hudson Institute and 70th U.S. Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo is a distinguished fellow at Hudson Institute. At Hudson, his work focuses on promoting U.S. national security, technological leadership and global engagement. From April 2018 through January 2021, Pompeo served as United States Secretary of State. He previously served as director of the Central Intelligence Agency from January 2017 to April 2018. As our nation’s most senior diplomat in his role as 70th United State Secretary of State, Pompeo helped to craft U.S. foreign policy based on our nation’s founding ideals that put America first. During Pompeo’s time at the State Department, he led a team that executed America’s largest ever global repatriation effort in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to joining the Trump administration, Pompeo was serving in his fourth term as congressman from Kansas’s 4th District. Before serving in Congress, he spent a decade leading two manufacturing businesses in South Central Kansas. Pompeo founded Thayer Aerospace, where he served as CEO. He later became president of Sentry International, an oilfield equipment manufacturing, distribution, and service company. Pompeo graduated first in his class at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1986 and served as a cavalry officer patrolling the Iron Curtain before the fall of the Berlin Wall. He also served with the 2nd Squadron, 7th Cavalry in the U.S. Army’s Fourth Infantry Division. After leaving active duty, Pompeo graduated from Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review.

5 ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR

I Can Do All Things Through Christ Address from Dr. Kelly A. James

I want to thank Regent University and the Alumni Association for this honor of being chosen Alumnus of the Year 2021, which is even more special as my son is a member of this graduating class. The year I graduated, Founder and Chancellor Dr. M.G. “Pat” Robertson said to the graduates, “I want to tell you today—you can if you just turn it over to the Lord. There is nothing impossible with God.” The scripture for this year is Philippians 4:13 that states, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Nothing is impossible for God and you can do all things through Christ. We all know where the strength comes from—Christ. So, Christ has already completed His part. Let’s look at your part. The Scripture says you can. Can as a verb means having the ability, power or skill. Sometimes the hardest part is starting, but each one of you has already done the hardest part by starting when you were accepted to Regent University. Knowing that you can is the first step you have already taken and now that you have finished your program, you have the skills and abilities to do all things. Dr. Kelly A. James School of Psychology & Counseling, ’11 Do means to perform, achieve or complete. You each started by doing what was necessary to complete the assignments, then you did what was possible by achieving the grades. You have completed all the requirements to be called graduate, and now you will be doing what was thought to be impossible. God said that you can do all things. What does all mean? All means the whole extent – everything; all means ALL. God gives me a word each year to integrate into my life. This year the word is choose. You get to choose where you go from here. God has put each one of you on the right path. God already put the dreams in you. Neuroscience has proven that our brains do not know the difference between an actual event we have experienced or a visual image that we create. So, choose to create the visual imagery of your dreams because God already ordained them. Your achievement today is a momentous occasion worthy of celebration. Some of you are finished with your education—congratulations! For others, this day is just one more step toward your educational goal—congratulations to you as well. The last thing that Dr. Robertson charged the graduates with was, “You will need to take out of your vocabulary ‘I can’t’ because God has already said that YOU can do all things.” Choose to believe that you Can Do All Things. So, what is your ALL?

About Dr. Kelly A. James, LPC Dr. James brings a background of psychology and mental health clinical experience having worked in the field, in a variety of positions, since 1997. James was named the 2019-20 Top Mental Health Professional by the International Association of Top Professionals. She has a national, weekly live radio show of the same name as the trauma book she co-authored, Why Aren’t You Over This By Now? on BoldBraveMedia.com.
