Constitutionally- required Declarations Of War may be passé, but our war machine limps along vigorously under endless “authorizations for use of military force”. However, war can only be a temporary measure for any society. It may sometimes be necessary but it always costs, and no society can bear the expense forever. Put aside the irreplaceable price in blood... what’s the cost in treasure of our current state of Endless War, what could we do with that treasure instead, and what can we do to turn things around? How much do we spend on guns and how much butter could it buy? The military budget itself was near $600 billion in 2015 and we’ve spent over $7.6 trillion on war since 2001, but that may be misleading.

  • What Happened?: the 2020 Election Showed That Libertarians Have a Long Way to Go Before They Can Become a Page 1 of 4 National Movement
USApp – American Politics and Policy Blog: What Happened?: The 2020 election showed that libertarians have a long way to go before they can become a Page 1 of 4 national movement. What Happened?: The 2020 election showed that libertarians have a long way to go before they can become a national movement. In the 2020 presidential election, the Libertarian Party candidate, Jo Jorgensen, gained 1.2 percent of the vote, less than half the party’s 2016 election result. Jeffrey Michels and Olivier Lewis write that despite signs that pointed towards the potential for libertarian voters to be king makers in the 2020 election, their dislike of Donald Trump turned many to Joe Biden and the Democratic Party. Following the 2020 US General Election, our mini-series, ‘What Happened?’, explores aspects of elections at the presidential, Senate, House of Representative and state levels, and also reflects on what the election results will mean for US politics moving forward. If you are interested in contributing, please contact Rob Ledger ([email protected]) or Peter Finn ([email protected]). In the 2016 US Presidential election, the former Republican Governor of New Mexico, Gary Johnson gained 3.3 percent of the national vote share, the highest on record for a Libertarian Party presidential candidate. This modest milestone could have been written off as the result of a race featuring two highly unpopular mainstream candidates, Donald Trump and former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. But it might also have portended a more meaningful movement in US electoral politics, one in which a growing Libertarian Party – or at least an increasingly independent bloc of libertarian voters – gains the critical mass to tip the race.

  • Minn. GOP Wants Bachmann for Sen., Pawlenty for Pres
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 10, 2010 INTERVIEWS: DEAN DEBNAM 888-621-6988 / 919-880-4888 (serious media inquiries only please, other questions can be directed to Tom Jensen) QUESTIONS ABOUT THE POLL: TOM JENSEN 919-744-6312 Minn. GOP wants Bachmann for Sen., Pawlenty for Pres. Raleigh, N.C. – Despite getting no love from the state’s at-large electorate against President Obama in PPP’s Wednesday release, outgoing Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty is the slim favorite of his own party faithful to get the state’s Republican National Convention delegates. In the race to take on popular Senator Amy Klobuchar, however, he does less well despite coming closest to beating Klobuchar in Tuesday’s look at the general election. Instead, newly empowered Congresswoman Michele Bachman is overwhelmingly the darling of hardcore GOP voters. Bachmann pulls 36% support from usual GOP primary voters, with a wide margin over Pawlenty’s 20%, Norm Coleman’s 14%, and a host of prospective contenders bunched in single digits: 8th-District Congressman-elect Chip Cravaack at 7%, Tom Emmer at 6%, 2nd-District Congressman John Kline at 5%, state legislator Laura Brod at 4%, and Erik Paulsen at 2%, with 6% undecided or favoring someone else. Pawlenty trails Klobuchar by only ten points, versus Bachmann’s 18 and Coleman’s 14. There is a huge ideological divide at play. Bachmann, founder of the Congressional Tea Party Caucus, gets a whopping 42% from the conservative supermajority, which makes up almost three-quarters of the electorate. That puts her far ahead of second-place Pawlenty’s 19%.

  • Gone Rogue: Time to Reform the Presidential Primary Debates
Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy Discussion Paper Series #D-67, January 2012 Gone Rogue: Time to Reform the Presidential Primary Debates by Mark McKinnon Shorenstein Center Reidy Fellow, Fall 2011 Political Communications Strategist Vice Chairman Hill+Knowlton Strategies Research Assistant: Sacha Feinman © 2012 President and Fellows of Harvard College. All rights reserved. How would the course of history been altered had P.T. Barnum moderated the famed Lincoln-Douglas debates in 1858? Today’s ultimate showman and on-again, off-again presidential candidate Donald Trump invited the Republican presidential primary contenders to a debate he planned to moderate and broadcast over the Christmas holidays. One of a record 30 such debates and forums held or scheduled between May 2011 and March 2012, this, more than any of the previous debates, had the potential to be an embarrassing debacle. Trump “could do a lot of damage to somebody,” said Karl Rove, the architect of President George W. Bush’s 2000 and 2004 campaigns, in an interview with Greta Van Susteren of Fox News. “And I suspect it’s not going to be to the candidate that he’s leaning towards. This is a man who says himself that he is going to run— potentially run—for the president of the United States starting next May. Why do we have that person moderating a debate?” 1 Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the 2008 Republican nominee for president, also reacted: “I guarantee you, there are too many debates and we have lost the focus on what the candidates’ vision for America is..

  • Capitol Insurrection at Center of Conservative Movement
Capitol Insurrection At Center Of Conservative Movement: At Least 43 Governors, Senators And Members Of Congress Have Ties To Groups That Planned January 6th Rally And Riots. SUMMARY: On January 6, 2021, a rally in support of overturning the results of the 2020 presidential election “turned deadly” when thousands of people stormed the U.S. Capitol at Donald Trump’s urging. Even Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who rarely broke with Trump, has explicitly said, “the mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the President and other powerful people.” These “other powerful people” include a vast array of conservative officials and Trump allies who perpetuated false claims of fraud in the 2020 election after enjoying critical support from the groups that fueled the Capitol riot. In fact, at least 43 current Governors or elected federal office holders have direct ties to the groups that helped plan the January 6th rally, along with at least 15 members of Donald Trump’s former administration. The links that these Trump-allied officials have to these groups are: Turning Point Action, an arm of right-wing Turning Point USA, claimed to send “80+ buses full of patriots” to the rally that led to the Capitol riot, claiming the event would be one of the most “consequential” in U.S. history. • The group spent over $1.5 million supporting Trump and his Georgia senate allies who claimed the election was fraudulent and supported efforts to overturn it. • The organization hosted Trump at an event where he claimed Democrats were trying to “rig the election,” which he said would be “the most corrupt election in the history of our country.” • At a Turning Point USA event, Rep.
