Iulian Boldea, Dumitru-Mircea Buda, Cornel Sigmirean (Editors) MEDIATING GLOBALIZATION: Identities in Dialogue Arhipelag XXI Press, 2018 ABOUT POLITICAL CENSORSHIP Nicoleta S ălcudeanu Main Researcher II, ”Gh. Șincai” Institute of the Romanian Academy, Tîrgu Mure ș Abstract:After the fall of Communism it was given a considerable importance to the ethical criterion in evaluating contemporary literature. Romanian society and with it the whole cultural world were trying to identify and fix their ideological wounds accumulated nearly half a century of totalitarianism. The noble intention of clarifying the immediate past, absolutely legitimate, has however slipped into a vigilante attitude that significantly exceed the cultural boundaries tending to a politicized vision of opposite sign and even to retaliation. Distance between good intentions and abuse is often almost invisible. So there appeared the "blacklists", informal but no less stigmatizing. The phenomenon is not new in Romanian culture. Depending on the regimes with authoritarian tendencies there were, repeatedly, censorship campaigns and were launched more or less official blacklists designed to block public access to those who are at a point in political disgrace. Political interference in literature is not so new, how else is not new nor the purge occurring after December 1989. Keywords: Communism, literature, freedom of press, purges After the fall of Communism it was given a considerable importance in assessing the ethical criterion of contemporary literature. Romanian society and, with it, the cultural world have tried to identify and repair their ideological sequels gained after almost half a century of totalitarianism. The noble intention of clarifying the recent past, absolutely legitimate, have unfortunately skidded slightly to ajudgmental impulse that went beyond the cultural sphere, sliding towards a politicized vision and even to revanchism.

Author and Literary Character (Summary of the Doctoral Thesis)
Pamfil Şeicaru. Author and literary character (Summary of the doctoral thesis) Supervising professor: Prof. univ. dr. Ionel Funeriu Candidate: Ando Andrei The myth of greatly talented journalist, but also of blackmailer and immoral person created around Pamfil Șeicaru an unwanted crust which covered entirely his qualities and important contribution to the Romanian literature. The drama chronicles, the plays and novels, the setting up of the supplement Curentul literar (Literary trend), where young writers had been promoted, his activity as literary criticist, the literary portraits (real micro-novels) were put in shade by the harsh indictments written as editor and journal director by one of the most gifted Romanian pamphleteers of all times. It is the biographers‟, detractors‟ fault, the fault of all those who analyzed from a unilateral perspective, of bad will or ignorance, the meaning of the journalist‟s activity and the structure of his works. Only recently, the literary size of Seicaru‟s works was explored, fragmentary, roughly, in studies and media papers. We intend to search the universe of the Seicaru‟s pamphlets from a perspective not used until now – themes, stylist, contextual. Another objective of the thesis is the novel research of Pamfil Șeicaru‟s literary profile, which we identified as main character in 14 literary works. Argument Far from idealizing his image, this paper intends to carry on a lucid, objective analysis, based upon a vast documentation, without ideological views on Seicaru‟s personality and works. We have started in this adventure of knowledge, we have started from the premise of the recovery of the literate size, less known for that that remained nevertheless in the first plan of the intellectual life as gifted journalist.

  • Gidni 2 History and Cultural Mentalities Shifting
GIDNI 2 HISTORY AND CULTURAL MENTALITIES SHIFTING IDEOLOGIES AND CULTURAL IDENTITIES IN ROMANIA: NICUŞOR GRAUR’S POLITICAL MEMOIRS (1930-1946) Carmen Andraș, Scientific Researcher, PhD, The “Gheorghe Şincai” Institute for Social Sciences and the Humanities, Tîrgu Mureș Abstract:The present paper focuses on Nicuşor Graur‟s ideological shifts from the Right to the Left in Romania during the regimes of King Carol II and Ion Antonescu. In his two political memoirs, “În preajma altei lumi” (“Close to Another World”) and “Ion Mihalache et Comp.” (both published in 1946), Nicuşor Graur, a journalist and former influential member of the National Peasant Party, justifies his leaving the party headed by the outstanding politicians and statesmen Iuliu Maniu (president) and Ion Mihalache (vice president). Built at the border of historical truth and personal need of justifying his choice, his discourse intentionally focuses not only on the so-described lack of congruence between the party‟s ideological and political propaganda and its actual actions, but also by looking to turn his former patrons and their followers into scapegoats. Such a political option, which was understood in his case sometimes as a proof of an authentic democratic commitment, other times as a careerist‟s act of treason or desertion that was sanctioned with incarceration, turned him from a dictatorship and extremism denouncer into a sympathizer of communism and of the Soviet Union. The paper follows not only Graur‟s ideological and political shifts but also the cultural and social

Copyright 2015 Pompilia Viorica Burcicǎ AMATEUR THEATER IN HISTORICAL TRANSYLVANIA BETWEEN THE TWO WORLD WARS BY POMPILIA VIORICA BURCICĂ DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2015 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Keith Hitchins, Chair Professor Maria Todorova Professor Emerita Elizabeth Pleck Associate Professor Carol Symes Abstract This dissertation examines amateur theater as an expression of cultural freedom among four ethnic groups inhabiting historical Transylvania, a province attached to Greater Romania after the First World War. By expanding on the current understanding of minority status in a nation- state, this study shows the opportunities provided by the Romanian government for local expression and unity. Through a detailed comparative history of the amateur theater of each ethnic group (the Romanians, Hungarians, Saxons, and Jews), I seek to show the degree to which nationalist regimes allowed them to create through amateur theater a platform for communication and cultural development. Unique at the regional level in scale and ethnic involvement, this artistic practice challenged the newly-formed nation-state and shaped its nationalistic response, but, at the same time, theater playing gave Romanian governments, in particular to the officials from Transylvania, an opportunity to act upon their principles concerning ethnic rights, which they advocated before the First World War. My conclusion is that, overall, they viewed the development of minority amateur theater in favorable terms. Theater appealed to minorities because they could take an active part in their self- organization and could showcase their outlook on life, family values, social relations, and work principles in the public sphere.

  • The Hero-‐Mirror Mechanism
CULTURAL DISCOURSES IN CEAUŞIST ROMANIA: THE HERO-MIRROR MECHANISM FILIP SEBASTIAN BOICU, BA. MA. Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy July 2014 1 2 ABSTRACT Cultural discourses in Ceauşist Romania: The Hero-Mirror Mechanism This thesis is concerned with main cultural discourses of the second phase of Communism in Romania (1964-1989), period largely identical with that of Ceauşescu’s rule. A secondary aim of the thesis is to look at the post-1989 continuations of these publicly influential discourses with the aim of understanding how the educational system (HE, in particular) is positioned in relation to the cultural domain. With regard to the Communist period, the main assertion of the thesis is that analysis of these discourses reveals an underlying cultural mechanism equivalent with a central mode of governance employed by the Communist party. According to this assertion, the mission of this cultural mechanism, with origins in Lenin’s drastic distinction between the party and the proletariat and in the idea that the party must bestow consciousness on the proletariat, is to create and regulate positive avatars (heroes imbued with the best of humanity) for each social category so as to fulfill and safeguard the aims of the Party. For this reason, this device has been entitled the hero-mirror mechanism. The device has also been linked with religion and theology. This perspective has found that the mirror-mechanism corresponds to the notion of “imago Dei,” and its axes to the notions of “kenosis” and “imitatio Dei.” The assessment of these cultural discourses via the mirror-mechanism results in three dimensions of research, each with its own universes of investigation, and each with its own findings.
