Big Ten Pole Vault Champion, 1906 Pole Vault National Champion, 1906 World Record Holder in Pole Vault 12’4 7/8 , 1906 Howard County Sports Hall of Fame, 2008 Kokomo High School, Kokomo, Indiana Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana Leroy Samse, born September 13, 1883, was a high school track and field athlete participating in pole vault and high jump; however, he also long jumped and ran the 100 yard dash and 120 yard hurdles. After graduating high school, Samse entered Indiana University, where he set a collegiate high jump record. He qualified for the 1904 Olympic team, where he beat Chicago Athletic Association teammate, Louis Wilkins, in a jump off to win the silver medal.
