2019 International Religious Freedom Report
CHINA (INCLUDES TIBET, XINJIANG, HONG KONG, AND MACAU) 2019 INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT Executive Summary Reports on Hong Kong, Macau, Tibet, and Xinjiang are appended at the end of this report. The constitution, which cites the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party and the guidance of Marxism-Leninism and Mao Zedong Thought, states that citizens have freedom of religious belief but limits protections for religious practice to “normal religious activities” and does not define “normal.” Despite Chairman Xi Jinping’s decree that all members of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) must be “unyielding Marxist atheists,” the government continued to exercise control over religion and restrict the activities and personal freedom of religious adherents that it perceived as threatening state or CCP interests, according to religious groups, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and international media reports. The government recognizes five official religions – Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Protestantism, and Catholicism. Only religious groups belonging to the five state- sanctioned “patriotic religious associations” representing these religions are permitted to register with the government and officially permitted to hold worship services. There continued to be reports of deaths in custody and that the government tortured, physically abused, arrested, detained, sentenced to prison, subjected to forced indoctrination in CCP ideology, or harassed adherents of both registered and unregistered religious groups for activities related to their religious beliefs and practices. There were several reports of individuals committing suicide in detention, or, according to sources, as a result of being threatened and surveilled. In December Pastor Wang Yi was tried in secret and sentenced to nine years in prison by a court in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, in connection to his peaceful advocacy for religious freedom. -

V91. 10 Geological Statistics Analysis of Population Distribution at Township Level in Henan Province, China Haixia Zhang, Wei Qu , Shuwen Niu, Jinghui Qi, Liqiong Ye, Guimei Zhang The College of Earth and Environment Sciences, Lanzhou University, Lanzhou 730000, China Abstract. Based on the sixth population census data at township level, this article analyzes the population distribution of Henan province, China by the geological statistics method. The result shows that population distribution of Henan province could be divided into three types: low density in mountain areas, medium density in plain areas, and high density in urban regions. The variation functions have similar trends in the four directions of E-W, N-S, NE-SW, and NW-SE. When the distance is over 80km, the anisotropy enhances. The exponential model has the best fitting effect for the variation function. The interpolation results represent the gradient change process of population density intuitively. Terrain condition is the basic factor influencing on the population spatial pattern. High population density in urban regions are the outcomes of mutual effects between the superior geographical condition and socioeconomic development. Introduction Population distribution is a reflection of the human-earth relationship in a special space-time background. Understanding the population distribution and what determines this distribution is fundamental to understanding the relationships between humans and the environment [1]. With the advancement of modern space technology and geographic information processing technology, the study on Chinese population distribution has experienced from qualitative analysis and simple quantitative to spatial-temporal modeling [2]-[4]. -

CONFORMED COPY LOAN NUMBER 7909-CN Public Disclosure Authorized Project Agreement Public Disclosure Authorized (Henan Ecological Livestock Project) between INTERNATIONAL BANK FOR RECONSTRUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT Public Disclosure Authorized and HENAN PROVINCE Dated July 26, 2010 Public Disclosure Authorized PROJECT AGREEMENT AGREEMENT dated July 26, 2010, entered into between INTERNATIONAL BANK FOR RECONSTRUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT (the “Bank”) and HENAN PROVINCE (“Henan” or the “Project Implementing Entity”) (“Project Agreement”) in connection with the Loan Agreement of same date between PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA (“Borrower”) and the Bank (“Loan Agreement”) for the Henan Ecological Livestock Project (the “Project”). The Bank and Henan hereby agree as follows: ARTICLE I – GENERAL CONDITIONS; DEFINITIONS 1.01. The General Conditions as defined in the Appendix to the Loan Agreement constitute an integral part of this Agreement. 1.02. Unless the context requires otherwise, the capitalized terms used in the Project Agreement have the meanings ascribed to them in the Loan Agreement or the General Conditions. Vol. 32.1: 113-60 jason protass A Geographic History of Song-Dynasty Chan Buddhism: The Decline of the Yunmen Lineage abstract: For a century during China’s Northern Song era, the Yunmen Chan lineage, one of several such regional networks, rose to dominance in the east and north and then abruptly disappeared. Whereas others suggested the decline was caused by a doctri- nal problem, this essay argues that the geopolitics of the Song–Jin wars were the pri- mary cause. The argument builds upon a dataset of Chan abbots gleaned from Flame Records. A chronological series of maps shows that Chan lineages were regionally based. Moreover, Song-era writers knew of regional differences among Chan lin- eages and suggested that regionalism was part of Chan identity: this corroborates my assertion. The essay turns to local gazetteers and early-Southern Song texts that re- cord the impacts of the Song–Jin wars on monasteries in regions associated with the Yunmen lineage. (Silvercorp) to prepare a Technical Report on the Songxian Property (Property) (also known as “X Mines”), in Henan Province, China, which Silvercorp acquired in late 2011. There has been no previous Technical Report on the Property. The Property comprises the XBG and XHP silver-gold-lead-zinc (Ag-Au-Pb-Zn) mines and associated exploration properties, in two project areas. In August 2011, Silvercorp acquired a 90% interest in the XBG project, and in November 2011, it acquired a 100% interest in the XHP project. Both acquisitions were made through Silvercorp’s 77.5% owned subsidiary, Henan Found. The Property is situated in the east extension of the Qinling Mountain Belt, near the margin of the Northern China Craton and in the same regional mineralization belt as Silvercorp’s Ying Property.
