    YIKA-VWAZA TRUST RESEARCH STUDY REPORT N (2017/18) Vascular Plant Survey of Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, Malawi By Sopani Sichinga ([email protected]) September , 2019 ABSTRACT In 2018 – 19, a survey on vascular plants was conducted in Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve. The reserve is located in the north-western Malawi, covering an area of about 986 km2. Based on this survey, a total of 461 species from 76 families were recorded (i.e. 454 Angiosperms and 7 Pteridophyta). Of the total species recorded, 19 are exotics (of which 4 are reported to be invasive) while 1 species is considered threatened. The most dominant families were Fabaceae (80 species representing 17. 4%), Poaceae (53 species representing 11.5%), Rubiaceae (27 species representing 5.9 %), and Euphorbiaceae (24 species representing 5.2%). Members of the four Kenyan genera were sampled in coastal and highland forest habitats, and at altitudes from sea level to 2979 m. Schrebera alata, whose fruit is a woody capsule, produced Lepidoptera only, as did the fleshy fruits of Jasminum species. Tephritid fruit flies were reared only from fruits of the oleaceous subtribe Oleinae, including Olea and Chionanthus. Four tephritid species were reared from Olea. The olive fly, Bactrocera oleae, was found exclusively in fruits of O. europaea ssp. cuspidata, a close relative of the commercial olive, Olea europaea ssp. europaea. Olive fly was reared from 90% (n = 21) of samples of this species, on both sides of the Rift Valley and at elevations to 2801 m.

A new genus, Lukea Gosline & Cheek (Annonaceae), is erected for two new species to science, Lukea quentinii Cheek & Gosline from Kaya Ribe, S.E. Kenya, and Lukea triciae Cheek & Gosline from the Udzungwa Mts, Tanzania. Lukea is characterised by a flattened circular bowl-shaped receptacle-calyx with a corolla of three petals that give the buds and flowers a unique appearance in African Annonaceae. Both species are extremely rare shrubs of small surviving areas of lowland evergreen forest under threat of habitat degradation and destruction and are provisionally assessed as Critically Endangered and Endangered respectively using the IUCN 2012 standard. Both species are illustrated and mapped. Material of the two species had formerly been considered to be possibly Uvariopsis Engl. & Diels, and the genus Lukea is placed in the Uvariopsis clade of the Monodoreae (consisting of the African genera Uvariodendron (Engl. & Diels) R.E.Fries, Uvariopsis, Mischogyne Exell, Dennettia Bak.f., and Monocyclanthus Keay).

The aim of this research was to investigate the activity of antimicrobial, the lethality of brine shrimp and phytochemical composition of crude extracts of four selected plants namely Schrebera alata (Oleaceae), Ormocarpum kirkii (Papilionoideae), Helichrysum forskahlii (Asteraceae) and Cussonia holstii (Araliaceae) that are medicinally used by herbalists from Losho, Narok County Kenya for treatment of ear, nose and throat infections, gastrointestinal disorders and skin diseases.

Der zweite Teil beschäftigt sich mit der Untersuchung der Blütenentwicklung der Oleaceae. Beide Familien sind derzeit in den basalen Lamiales eingeordnet. TEIL 1: POLYPREMUM PROCUMBENS L. (TETRACHONDRACEAE): VOM SAMEN ZUR FRUCHT. Die Familie Tetrachondraceae umfasst zwei Gattungen mit insgesamt drei Ar- ten: Tetrachondra mit T. patagonica und T. hamiltonii, und Polypremum mit P. procumbens. Während Polypremum sandigen, eher trockenen Untergrund be- vorzugt und von den südlichen USA bis Süd-Amerika verbreitet ist (ROGERS, 1986), ist Tetrachondra in feuchten Habitaten Neuseelands und Patagoniens zu finden (WAGSTAFF et al., 2000). Aufgrund ihres speziellen morphologischen Baus und ihrer winzigen Blü- ten waren die zwei Gattungen schwierig in die bestehende Systematik einzu- ordnen. SKOTTSBERG (1913) etablierte die Familie Tetrachondraceae, welche sich neuerdings neben den Familien Plocospermataceae, Carlemanniaceae, Oleaceae, Calceolariaceae und Gesneriaceae an der Basis der Lamiales befin- det (OXELMAN et al., 1999; WAGSTAFF et al., 2000; OLMSTEAD et al., 2001; BRE- MER et al., 2001).

Hesperelaea is a monotypic Oleaceae genus that was collected only once, 140 years ago on Guadalupe Island, Mexico. This lineage is almost certainly extinct, and has been considered an insular paleoendemic of unknown relationship within subtribe Oleinae. Here, a genome skimming approach was attempted on the H. palmeri specimen to generate genomic data in order to interpret the biogeographic history of Hesperelaea in a phylogenetic framework. Despite highly degraded DNA, we obtained the complete plastome, the nuclear ribosomal DNA cluster (nrDNA), and partial sequences of low-copy genes. Six plastid regions and nrDNA internal transcribed spacers were used for phylogenetic estimations of subtribe Oleinae, including data from previous studies.

It includes several genera of major economic and ecological importance such as olives, ash trees, jasmines, forsythias, osmanthuses, privets and lilacs. The natural history of the group is not completely understood yet, but its diversification seems to be associated with polyploidisation events and the evolution of various reproductive and dispersal strategies. In addition, some taxonomical issues still need to be resolved, particularly in the paleopolyploid tribe Oleeae.

It is probably one of the last rem- nants of tropical rain forest that would have survived the late Holocene dry period. Based on intensive field investigations through 25 plots (10 × 50 m size) and matching of herbarium specimens, a checklist of 185 species of vascular plant belonging to 54 families and 142 genera is presented for this forest. In ad- dition to the name for each taxon, we described the life form following Raunkiaer’s definitions, chorology as well as threats to habitat.
