ORCID ID: http://orcid.org/0000-0002-9167-6027 *Corresponding author Abstract Priogymnanthus colombianus, a new species and the first record of the South American genus of Oleaceae for Colombia is described and illustrated also we present a dichotomic key for the known species of genus. The new species differs from the three knowns for Priogymnanthus by: leaves oblong or oblong-elliptic, completely glabrous, petioles 10–17 (19) mm; inflorescences 15–20 (25) mm in length, with glabrous rachis, anthers about 3 mm length; fruits (10) 12–15 mm in diameter. P. colombianus occurs on premontane and dry forest in Colombia between 719 and 1213 m of elevation. Based on general threats to its ecosystems and few records found, we categorize the species as EN (endangered) following IUCN criteria. Resumen Se describe e ilustra Priogymnanthus colombianus, una nueva especie y primer representante de este género suramericano de Oleaceae en Colombia, y se presenta una clave dicotómica para la identificación de las especies conocidas del género. -

Dana Nelson5,6 Received: 22 July 2019 /Revised: 1 January 2020 /Accepted: 16 January 2020 # The Author(s) 2020 Abstract Ashes (Fraxinus spp.) are important hardwood tree species in rural, suburban, and urban forests of the eastern USA. Unfortunately, emerald ash borer (EAB, Agrilus planipennis) an invasive insect pest that was accidentally imported from Asia in the late 1980s–early 1990s is destroying them at an alarming rate. All North American ashes are highly susceptible to EAB, although blue ash (F. quadrangulata) may have some inherent attributes that provide it some protection. In contrast Manchurian ash (F. mandshurica) is relatively resistant to EAB having coevolved with the insect pest in its native range in Asia. Given its level of resistance, Manchurian ash has been considered for use in interspecies breeding programs designed to transfer resistance to susceptible North American ash species. One prerequisite for successful interspecies breeding is consistency in chromosome ploidy level and number between the candidate species. In the current study, we cytologically determined that both Manchurian ash and blue ash are diploids (2n) and have the same number of chromosomes (2n =2x = 46). We also characterized these species’ ribosomal gene families (45S and 5S rDNA) using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Both Manchurian and blue ash showed two 45S rDNA and one 5S rDNA sites, but blue ash appears to have an additional site of 45S rDNA. -

A Horticulture Information article from the Wisconsin Master Gardener website, posted 18 April 2016 Forsythia, Forsythia spp. Forsythia is both the common and genus name of a group of deciduous fl ower shrubs in the olive family (Oleaceae) named after William Forsyth, a Scottish botanist who was at that time Director of the Royal Garden at Kensington and a founding member of England’s Royal Horticultural Society. The 11 or so species are primarily native to eastern Asia, with one species from Europe. The two quite variable species F. suspensa and F. viridissima were the fi rst to be brought from the Far East to Europe. Forsythia × intermedia is a hybrid of these species that was introduced in continental Europe Forsythia is a common landscape plant in the about 1880. Many Midwest. other crosses using the same two parents have been made so plants with this name can be quite variable. F. suspensa tends to have a widely open to drooping habit, but a more upright form found in China in 1861 was given the (incorrect) name F. fortunei. Other species discovered in the early 1900’s – F. giraldiana from China and F. ovata from Korea – as well as the European species F. europaea, have been used in 20th-century American crosses. Hardiness varies by species, with most in zones 5-8, but many of the hybrids are hardier than the parents, surviving in zones 4 or even 3. The unrelated white forsythia, Abeliophyllum distichum, has many of the same characteristics as forsythia, blooming White forsythia, Abeliophyllum about the same time, but with white fl owers. -

Biophysical Site Description This type occurs on sandy loam, loamey, or clayey upland sites of the southern Great Plains. In TX and OK, elevations range from 915-275m (Wright and Bailey 1982). Precipitation ranges from 20 to 28 inches (Wright and Bailey 1982), although mixedgrass can occur on sites with up to 32in, and occurs mostly from May through September. Vegetation Description Historically, vegetation was generally dominated by midgrass, with some areas occupied by tallgrasses or short grasses, as an effect of grazing, edaphic and topographic conditions. -
