Procuramos dar destaque a eventos e casos colocados lateralmente em relação ao mainstream da indústria fonográfica hegemônica. É uma discussão, portanto, sobre rock independente, sobre ocorrências e estruturações sociais em curso no circuito underground. São apresentados materiais que nos permitem especular também sobre as relações entre os imaginários urbanos e as memórias produzidas (ou fixadas) pela música pop. É uma discussão, enfim, sobre as tensões entre o passado e o presente da música alternativa produzida na região. Palavras-chave: Manchester, cenas musicais, música independente, rock alternativo. ABSTRACT What is presented here is an eminently personal narrative, of empirical character, about some field entries taken place in Manchester, Northern England, between February and May of 2015, in a broader investigation about local music scenes. We aimed at highlighting events and laterally-placed cases in relation to the mainstream of the hegemonic phonographic industry. It is therefore a discussion about independent rock, about social occurrences and acts of structuring happening underway in the underground circuit. The materials presented are ones which allow us to speculate also about the relations between urban imaginaries and produced (or fixed) memories by pop music.

Marchant, also known now as Bipolar Sunshine, used to be former vocalist of Kid British – but three EP’s down, a headline tour starting this month and a debut album that’s almost complete, he’s definitely making a name for himself as a solo artist. Naturally, the first question I had to ask to satisfy my curiosity was… where did the name ‘Bipolar Sunshine’ come from?“It literally dropped out of nowhere – I’ve always had the name in my head… It comes from Manchester too, because of the weather!” Sitting in a café in Manchester city centre at the time, I can’t help but look out of the window at the sun-and-showers sky and agree with him. “And as for sunshine, well sunshine will always make people feel better. When things are grim and the sun comes out everyone just forgets their worries – So that’s what I go for.” Marchant, whose history with Kid British displays genres ranging from ska to hip hop, now seems to aim for a more sophisticated and pop-orientated tone in his new music, and I asked him why he seems to have gone in a completely different direction and opted to create a whole new vibe now compared to his time in Kid British.
