GIBSON Black and Blue Police-Community Relations in Portland’s Albina District, 1964–1985 It appears that there is sufficient evidence to believe that the Portland Police Department indulges in stop and frisk practices in Albina. They seem to feel that they have the right to stop and frisk someone because his skin is black and he is in the black part of town. — Attorney commenting in City Club of Portland’s Report on Law Enforcement, 1981 DURING THE 1960s, institutionalized discrimination, unemployment, and police brutality fueled inter-racial tensions in cities across America, including Portland, Oregon. Riots became more frequent, often resulting in death and destruction. Pres. Lyndon Johnson’s National Advisory Com- mission on Civil Disorders issued in early 198 what became known as the “Kerner Report,” which declared that the nation was “moving toward two societies, one black, one white — separate and unequal.”2 Later that year, the City Club of Portland published a document titled Report on Problems of Racial Justice in Portland, its own version of the national study. The report documented evidence of racial discrimination in numerous institutions, including the police bureau. The section “Police Policies, Attitudes, and Practices” began with the following statement: The Mayor and the Chief of Police have indicated that in their opinions the Kerner Report is not applicable to Portland. Satisfactory police-citizen relations are not likely to be achieved as a reality in Portland in the absence of a fundamental change in the philosophy of the officials who formulate policy for the police bureau. -

CHINATOWN AND URBAN REDEVELOPMENT: A SPATIAL NARRATIVE OF RACE, IDENTITY, AND URBAN POLITICS 1950 – 2000 BY CHUO LI DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Landscape Architecture in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2011 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor D. Fairchild Ruggles, Chair Professor Dianne Harris Associate Professor Martin Manalansan Associate Professor Faranak Miraftab Abstract The dissertation explores the intricate relations between landscape, race/ethnicity, and urban economy and politics in American Chinatowns. It focuses on the landscape changes and spatial struggles in the Chinatowns under the forces of urban redevelopment after WWII. As the world has entered into a global era in the second half of the twentieth century, the conditions of Chinatown have significantly changed due to the explosion of information and the blurring of racial and cultural boundaries. One major change has been the new agenda of urban land planning which increasingly prioritizes the rationality of capital accumulation. The different stages of urban redevelopment have in common the deliberate efforts to manipulate the land uses and spatial representations of Chinatown as part of the socio-cultural strategies of urban development. A central thread linking the dissertation’s chapters is the attempt to examine the contingent and often contradictory production and reproduction of socio-spatial forms in Chinatowns when the world is increasingly structured around the dynamics of economic and technological changes with the new forms of global and local activities. Late capitalism has dramatically altered city forms such that a new understanding of the role of ethnicity and race in the making of urban space is required. -

Since opening his first art foundry in the late 1960s, Polich has worked closely with the most significant artists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. His foundries—Tallix (1970–2006), Polich of Polich’s energy and invention, Art Works (1995–2006), and Polich dedication to craft, and Tallix (2006–present)—have produced entrepreneurial acumen on the renowned artworks like Jeff Koons’ work of artists. As an art fabricator, gleaming stainless steel Rabbit (1986) and Polich remains behind the scenes, Louise Bourgeois’ imposing 30-foot tall his work subsumed into the careers spider Maman (2003), to name just two. of the artists. Form Vision Hans Theys Form Vision Artists on Art Tornado Editions 2019 To Tamara Van San In 1983, a fellow student handed me this Banda copy, suggesting it might be interesting for me – as an aficionado of art and literature – to study the writings of Kafka without interpreting them. The origin of the book you are holding now lies within this generous gesture. Thirty years later, when I accidently rediscovered it, I realised that the text quotes a book by Susan Sontag, translated and typewritten by an unknown hand. Everyone has a sort of individual form vision. In all the greatest artists the seeds of this form vision has been present even in their early work, and to some extent their work has been a gradual unfolding of this rhythm throughout. (…) It’s something the artist can’t control – it’s his make up. (…) The less conscious you are of your own individual form rhythm, the more likely it is, I think, to get richer and fuller and develop. Henry Moore, 1941 What is important now is to recover our senses. We must learn to see more, to hear more, to feel more. Our task is not to find the maximum amount of content in a work of art, much less to squeeze more content out of the work than is already there. Our task is to cut back content so that we can see the thing at all. (…) The function of criticism should be to show how it is what it is, even that it is what it is, rather than to show what it means. -

So many of our Old Girls have gone to Rome for the Jubilee this year that the thoughts of members and friends of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin, all over the world, will recall with pleasure another Holy Year cele brated over three hundred years ago-in 1625. We go in spirit to Rome one day in that fa r-off year of Jubilee, and as we enter the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, we meet three ladies coming from their devotions. They are Mary V.I ard and two companions-the Found ress and the first Religious of the l.B.V.Af . Several Rpmans recognize them and stand back with deep respect, for they are already well loved by many thousands of parents whose children are being educated by them. T his basilica has been their favourite place of meditation and prayer since they came to Rome over three years ago. Near its sanctuary they have renewed their vows, and consecrated their lives anew to Our Lady of the Snows before the revered picture of St.
