Two days after the Southern Cross returned to Sydney, Prime Minister S.M. Bruce ordered a top-level inquiry into the affair by an expert committee — which was certainly not biased in Smithy's favour. Having considered all points of view, the committee ruled that they could find no convincing evidence that the forced landing had been a hoax. Smithy and his crew were completely cleared, but to their dying day, both he and Ulm suffered at the hands of 'poppy cutters' who preferred their own 'gut feeling' to the verdict of an exhaustive inquiry.

It shows part of a memorial created by Austin Byrne, an entusiastic admirer of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, over a period of 25 years. His passion was to have the young people of Australia recognise the achievements of Kingsford Smith (commonly known as ‘Smithy’) and his aeroplane Southern Cross. The components of this memorial were: • a large-scale model of the Southern Cross made from hand-turned brass, with the interior seating covered in kangaroo hide and the cabin illuminated by real but minute electric lights • three globes of the world, two of them about 30 centimetres across, and the third at about waist height and measuring about 90 centimetres across, with each globe showing the countries of the world in raised metal and every route flown by Smithy marked in Australian opals • a photograph of Smithy set into a frame of Australian marble • a kangaroo-skin bound book containing the record of Smithy’s every flight. Some of the elements of the exhibit are reproduced on the next page. Look at them, and answer the questions that follow.

Laurel Seaborn April, 2014 Director of Thesis/Dissertation: Dr. Lynn Harris Major Department: Department of History, Program in Maritime Studies ABSTRACT During the 19th century, women went to sea on sailing ships. Wives and family accompanied captains on their voyages from New England. They wrote journals and letters that detailed their life on board, adventures in foreign ports, and feelings of separation from family left behind. Although the women kept separate from the sailors as class and social status dictated, they contributed as nannies, nurses and navigators when required. Examination of the historical documents, ship cabin plans, and photos of those interiors, as well as looking at surviving ships, such as the whaleship Charles W. Morgan, provided evidence of the objects women brought and used on board. The investigation from a gendered perspective of the extant material culture, and shipwreck site reports laid the groundwork for finding potential archaeological diagnostics of women living on board.
