YOURS FOR £600 £100 per month for 6 months ARO117 £600 01303 278137 Charles Kingsford Smith was a world famous Australian aviator whose notable feats include the first trans-Pacific flight between the USA and Australia, the first non-stop crossing of the Australian mainland, the first flights between Australia and New Zealand, and the speed record from Australia to London in only 10.5 days. Patrick Taylor was an Australian aviator who during WWI was commissioned into the Royal Flying Corps and awarded the Military Cross in 1917. Following the war he continued his career in civil aviation in Australia and joined Charles Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm during several pioneering flights. During the Second World War he served with the ATA. John Pethybridge was an Australian aviation pioneer and co-pilot to Charles Kingsford-Smith aboard ‘Lady Southern Cross’ when they disappeared in 1935 above the Andaman Sea whilst attempting to break the speed record between England and Australia. John Stannage was the radio operator aboard the maiden east to west transatlantic flight which flew between Ireland and Newfoundland in 1930; under the pilotage of the famous Charles Kingsford Smith. When the triumphant crew returned they were greeted with a ticker-tape parade in New York which stretched for miles. HORVAT This is the first complete story of the flights “Above the Pacific” from the first Hawaiian balloon ascent in 1880 and the first Curtiss flights in1910 up to the prevent time (1966). 5. His father’s son: Bob Hitchcock In August 1940 anyone familiar with Australia’s recent aviation history would probably recognise the name Bob Hitchcock. Not the 28-year-old Flight Lieutenant Hitchcock who was trained to take the controls of the latest Hudson bombers to be delivered to the RAAF’s No. 2 Squadron. But his father, the tragedy of whose death while searching for Charles Kingsford-Smith’s missing Southern Cross had been on every Australian front page and silent cinema newsreel in 1929, and in books and countless articles in the years that followed. Henry Smith ‘Bob’ Hitchcock had perished with Keith Anderson in a futile attempt to find the aviation heroes Charles Kingsford-Smith and Charles Ulm. His name was perpetually inscribed alongside those of some of Australia’s most celebrated aviators.1 Bob Hitchcock senior was born in Broken Hill in 1891. With his mother and 12 siblings he followed his father Harry in search of work to Adelaide and further west to Kalgoorlie, Perth, and Fremantle. Little is recorded of his childhood. He attended South Kalgoorlie Primary School until he was 12 or 13. His sister Pretoria remembered him about this time occasionally disappearing into his father’s workshop and reappearing with a tiny wooden aeroplane fashioned from a clothes peg. Other accounts suggest a continuing fascination with building model aircraft. Apprenticed as a bricklayer (his father’s trade), Bob ― as he preferred to be known ― did not complete the apprenticeship. By the time he married Violet Bourne in 1911 his parents had separated and his mother had settled in Perth with the younger children. -

CROSSING THE PACIFIC The flight of the Southern Cross 1928 Mementoes from the Crome Collection and other aviation collection of the National Library of Autralia On 31 May 1928 the Australian airmen, Charles Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm, together with two Americans, the navigator Harry Lyon and the radio operator Jim Warner, left San Francisco on the first flight to Australia across the Pacific Ocean. Kingsford Smith was fully aware of the historic significance of the flight: I have a vivid recollection of the morning of May 31, 1928, when, with a roar of the engines, we took off from Oakland air port. The morning was misty, but the weather forecast was good, and as we headed out over the Golden Gate I experienced a sensation of relaxation and relief from the worries and anxieties of the past nine months, and at the same time a tremendous elation at the prospect before me. To me personally all our troubles were over. What lay in front was a glorious adventure — and a glorious achievement. It is true that others had pioneered the path before us as far as Hawaii, but after that we were going into the unknown. Balbao [sic] had been the first white man to set eyes on the Pacific; Magellan had been the first to furrow its water with his keel; Bligh had navigated its unknown waters for 3000 miles in an open boat. I felt that we were following in the footsteps of these great predecessors, and that we could claim kinship with them. They had traversed virgin waters; we were about to traverse virgin air. -

Rimmer* Abstract Distance and remoteness have been making a comeback among economists interpreting Australia’s place in the world. Although there are claims by telecommunications theorists that distance is dead, this is not the case in international air transport. As a means of elaborating this proposition, attention is focused on tracing changes in the overseas operations and route network of Qantas (Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Ltd) since its inception in 1920. After discussing Qantas’s origins three issues are explored: how did Qantas reflect Australia’s Imperial connection; how did the nationalization of Qantas reshape the airline’s pri- orities; how has the privatization of Qantas changed the airline’s main concerns? There is an abundance of material on the history and development of Qantas’s international passenger net- work to address these issues. The material ranges from annual reports; company histories; auto- biographies and a biography of co-founder Sir W. H. Fysh (1895−1974); anecdotes from for- mer pilots providing insights into the places used for their ‘slips’ or crew stopovers between flights; paraphernalia such as timetables and posters; the travel diaries of frequent (and infre- quent) flyers; a living memory bank in George A. Roberts (born 1909), who worked for the company between 1936 and 1970 and who now manages the Qantas Historical Collection; and Qantas Virtual Airway providing detailed information for game-players to simulate historic, current and future flights. -

The thesis demonstrates the evolution of the flying boats' contribution to Australia’s development through their position at the crucial intersection of the nation’s economic development and military defence. It argues that the flying boats provide a unique lens through which to explore Australia’s changing sense of national and global connectedness in a period of rapid technological change. The significance of flying boats to the commercial and social life of Australia should not be understated. However, recognition of their significance has been diminished by a tendency to focus exclusively on their role during World War II. The result has been to disassociate and understate the salience of the flying boat era as a whole. -

For the answer go to page 19 2 Editorial - Thirty years of Slipstream I was reminded of how long Slipstream had been running, when I came across Michael Taylor’s article 25 years of Slipstream, in the November 2012 issue. At that time, along with Angus Macdonald, he was giving me a brief respite from editing Slipstream. Long time members of the club will recall the work of various editors over the period from the first issue. Until 1987 the club had a simple AMAC Newsletter. Bryan Spencer recalls how in the sixties these were produced on Gestetner stencils cut on a typewriter. Maurice Poletti took over as bulletin editor from Dave McKinley, in 1986. Maurice (or Maurie as we knew him) wrote some engaging editorials, always carefully crafted and topical. He set a high standard for other editors who followed. His bulletins frequently included drawings and articles about Pepperell model engines about which he was an expert. Each issue also ran CAD drawn plans of vintage models and 3 views of full size aircraft. Putting the bulletin to- gether in those days was reliant on a literal cut and paste process with pre-screened black and white photographs for photocopying, that necessarily limited reproduction quality. Maurie was unhappy with the programs for screening halftones so designed his own software to do this! He kept a watchful eye on bulletin production as others took over the editor role.
