Happen, that is, unless we reconsidered our program of almost indiscriminate immigration and the accompanying madness of multiculturalism. I suppose very few viewers—or newspaper readers, or radio listeners—made the connection: if a week is a long time in politics, two decades is almost an ice age in the public memory span of history. Yet warned we were, and little heed we paid. In mid‑1984 Blainey, who then held the Ernest Scott chair of history at Melbourne University and was dean of the arts faculty, gave an address to the Rotary Club of Warrnambool, Victoria. This was hardly a commanding forum; there was no TV or radio coverage. Blaineyʹs themes, quietly and soberly presented, were simply these: Australia each year was taking in migrants at a rate faster than the national fabric could absorb; many migrants were coming from backgrounds so starkly different from Australian norms that prospects of a social fit into our community might lie a long way off. He went on to say that should a time come when ordinary Australians began to feel crowded or pressured by new arrivals, resentment might soon end the ready acceptance upon which migrants hitherto knew they could rely. Blaineyʹs position was reasonable almost to the point of being obvious and appealed to the commonsense of anybody with worldly experience, and with some acquaintance with wider human nature, of whatever colour or culture. -

In the process, SIA rewrote the rules for competition and earned accolades for its excellent aviation record, young fl eet of planes and a reputation for delighting customers. Bilateral air service agreements negotiated between individual nations limited the routes of a given airlines and hence the airlines’s growth. The global airlines industry responded to this challenge with a mix of acquisition, strategic alliances (for example, the STAR alliance) and related diversifi cation strategies. But would these strategies be sustainable in the near future for SIA? What course of action should SIA undertake? Associate Professor Toh Thian Ser and D. G. The life of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, Warner Books, London, 1999 page xv) FindingFinding ‘Smithy’‘Smithy’ Exploring the legend and reality of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith The National Museum of Australia has an exhibit in the Eternity gallery under the theme of ‘passion’. It shows part of a memorial created by Austin Byrne, an entusiastic admirer of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, over a period of 25 years. His passion was to have the young people of Australia recognise the achievements of Kingsford Smith (commonly known as ‘Smithy’) and his aeroplane Southern Cross. The components of this memorial were: • a large-scale model of the Southern Cross made from hand-turned brass, with the interior seating covered in kangaroo hide and the cabin illuminated by real but minute electric lights • three globes of the world, two of them about 30 centimetres across, and the third at about waist height and measuring about 90 centimetres across, with each globe showing the countries of the world in raised metal and every route flown by Smithy marked in Australian opals • a photograph of Smithy set into a frame of Australian marble • a kangaroo-skin bound book containing the record of Smithy’s every flight. Some of the elements of the exhibit are reproduced on the next page. Look at them, and answer the questions that follow. -

Victorian Heritage Database place details - 28/9/2021 Former Point Cook RAAF Base Location: Point Cook Road,, POINT COOK VIC 3030 - Property No B5572 Heritage Inventory (HI) Number: Listing Authority: HI Extent of Registration: 1 Statement of Significance: The former Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) base at Point Cook, near Werribee, Victoria, is Australia's oldest operational airfield and one of few pre-WW2 airfields in Australia. As part of its history Point Cook has long been recognised as the birthplace of Australian military aviation (1913), and subsequently of the RAAF (1921). Point Cook was the place where many later personalities in both our military and civil aviation fields first learned to fly, where a number of historic flights in the 1920s began, and where civil aviation itself underwent much of its earliest development. As a national icon, RAAF Point Cook's significance is unequalled. The classification includes all parts of the airbase associated with its RAAF aviation history, including post WW2 development such as the chapel with its aircraft motifs, and c.1960s buildings. This former RAAF Point Cook Air Base, including the airfield and runways, in being recognised as the birthplace of the Royal Australian Air Force and perhaps the oldest and certainly most intact, longest serving military airfield in the world, is of historic, architectural, scientific/technical and social significance at the national and international levels. Architectural: Australia's earliest military aviation buildings located at Point Cook are amongst the world's oldest of this type. The significance of the early Point Cook architecture is reflected in its strong influence on later RAAF buildings in other parts of Australia, which virtually replicate Point Cook's building types. -
Australian Historians and Historiography in the Courtroom
AUSTRALIAN HISTORIANS AND HISTORIOGRAPHY IN THE COURTROOM T ANYA JOSEV* This article examines the fascinating, yet often controversial, use of historians’ work and research in the courtroom. In recent times, there has been what might be described as a healthy scepticism from some Australian lawyers and historians as to the respective efficacy and value of their counterparts’ disciplinary practices in fact-finding. This article examines some of the similarities and differences in those disciplinary practices in the context of the courts’ engagement with both historians (as expert witnesses) and historiography (as works capable of citation in support of historical facts). The article begins by examining, on a statistical basis, the recent judicial treatment of historians as expert witnesses in the federal courts. It then moves to an examination of the High Court’s treatment of general works of Australian history in aid of the Court making observations about the past. The article argues that the judicial citation of historical works has taken on heightened significance in the post-Mabo and ‘history wars’ eras. It concludes that lasting changes to public and political discourse in Australia in the last 30 years — namely, the effect of the political stratagems that form the ‘culture wars’ — have arguably led to the citation of generalist Australian historiography being stymied in the apex court. 28 August 1980 PROC. BIOL. SOC. WASH. 93(2), 1980, pp. 421-434 A NEW SPECIES OF SOLENOCERA (CRUSTACEA: DECAPODA: SOLENOCERIDAE) FROM NORTHERN AUSTRALIA Isabel Perez Farfante and D. L. Grey Abstract.—Solenocera australiana, new species, a close ally of S. halli and S. melantho, is described from material collected in shallow water, 15 to 24 m, off the Northern Territory, Australia. This species is characterized by the antennular flagella which gradually narrow distally toward the 2 or 3 distalmost articles; the roughly lanceolate distal part of the dorsolateral lobules of the petasma which are supported by submesial ribs; and the presence of two pairs of thelycal protuberances on the anterior part of ster- nite XIV, the mesial one usually considerably larger than the lateral, as well as by the straight anterior border of the thoracic ridge. In July 1972, during routine fishery monitoring by the staff of the Fisheries Division, Department of Primary Production, Darwin, a collection of shrimps of the genus Solenocera was taken from commercial grounds north of Groote Eylandt in the western Gulf of Carpentaria. Since that time ad- ditional specimens have been obtained during the course of sampling of penaeid shrimps by fishery research vessels in waters adjacent to the North- ern Territory, mostly in Van Diemen Gulf, but also in other localities off this province by commercial trawlers. Van Diemen Gulf has not attracted significant commercial fishing for pe- naeid shrimps—the only members of the superfamily Penaeoidea that at present are economically important in northern Australia—and to make a preliminary evaluation of its potential as a fishery, a series of brief surveys were made between May 1977 and February 1978.
