It will make the material in Grand Central Question easier to remember and apply My goal is to provide you with a resource that will help you read Grand Central Question in a more focused and memorable way While this study guide can be used for individual study of the material in the book, it’s also ideal to use for a small group study or a class at your church 2. The videos guide your individual or group study and provide bonus material that further de- velops some of the ideas in the book. Along with the study guide, I have recorded a series of short, easily downloadable videos that address the three main worldviews discussed in Grand Central Question. You can play these videos as you read each section of Grand Central Question and as you go through the corresponding question in this study guide I’ve put some suggestions in this study guide about where I think you might get the most benefit out of playing the videos In those videos, I’ve included bonus material about the philosophical, theological and historical foundations for the Christian faith For example, you’ll see easy-to-remember dis- cussions about the historical evidence for the Bible and Jesus’ resurrection The videos are a great way to start discussions or to just get more information about some of the topics I couldn’t cover in detail in the book It’s my prayer that the study guide and bonus videos will help you to make the material in Grand Central Question a part of your walk with Christ And if you’re not a Christian but you’re curious about how Christianity answers life’s important questions, I hope these ma- terials will encourage you to think critically and sincerely about the credibility of the Christian message With you on the ride, Abdu Murray STUDY GUIDE Video: Seeing Around the Emotional Eclipse Prologue: What Truth Costs—What Truth Is Worth • Pilate asked “What is truth?” and then walked out on Jesus (John 18:38) If someone asked you the same question, how would you answer? Chapter 1: Grand Central Questions • Look at the four fundamental questions that every worldview must answer (page 32; page numbers refer to the print edition) How do the answers to these questions affect a person’s daily life? PART I: SECULAR HUMANISM OR THE GOSPEL: WHICH PROVIDES US WITH INTRINSIC VALUE AND OBJECTIVE PURPOSE? Chapter 2: Secular Humanism—The Secular Search • Do you believe that God’s existence is necessary to objectively affirm that humans have inherent dignity, purpose and moral value? Why or why not? Chapter 3: Saying Nothing as Loud as We Can • How do theists and secular humanists differ in their answers regarding the source of the sa- credness and value of race, gender and ethnicity? • Atheist philosopher Julian Baggini has said that atheism is about facing up to the fact that life without God can be bleak, nihilistic and miserable (page 74) Do you agree with Baggini’s claim that without God there is no reason to believe that life should be meaningful and moral? Why? PART II: EASTERN AND WESTERN SPIRITUALITY OR THE GOSPEL: WHICH GIVES REAL ANSWERS TO SUFFERING? Chapter 5: Pantheism and Pain • Pantheism teaches that the divine is all there really is We are simply mistaken to think that Study Guide 5 there is a difference between anything, because everything is part of the divine Does this seem true to you? Why or why not? Chapter 7: From Whence Comes God’s Greatness? • Are the similarities between Islam and Christianity deep, or are they superficial in nature? • While Christians and Muslims share the conviction that God is the greatest possible being, how is this important point of agreement—God’s greatness—also a big point of departure between the two faiths (see pages 166-172)? Why or why not? • Does the Trinity—God in community—solve the mystery of how to understand God’s greatness? Chapter 10: Greatness Incarnate • Read pages 215-216 How is Jesus fully human and not merely human, and how does this fact ensure that the concept of the incarnation is not inherently contradictory? • The Qur’an agrees with the Bible in recognizing the fundamental importance of love when the Qur’an proclaims that God is Al-Wadud, full of loving kindness If God is the greatest possible being and love is the greatest ethic, where do we find love expressed in the greatest possible way—in Islam where God doesn’t self-sacrifice, or in Christianity where he does? 6 GRAND CENTRAL QUESTION DISCUSSION GUIDE Epilogue: A Worldview That Views the Whole World • What is your reaction to the information and the arguments presented in Grand Central Question? • Does the gospel provide the answers to the fundamental questions and to the Grand Central Question that you have asked in your own life? Grim Introduction: The Emerging Alliance of World Religions and Ecology HIS ISSUE OF DÆDALUS brings together for the first time diverse perspectives from the world’s religious traditions T regarding attitudes toward nature with reflections from the fields of science, public policy, and ethics. The scholars of religion in this volume identify symbolic, scriptural, and ethical dimensions within particular religions in their relations with the natural world. They examine these dimensions both historically and in response to contemporary environmental problems. Our Dædalus planning conference in October of 1999 fo- cused on climate change as a planetary environmental con- cern.1 As Bill McKibben alerted us more than a decade ago, global warming may well be signaling “the end of nature” as we have come to know it.2 It may prove to be one of our most challenging issues in the century ahead, certainly one that will need the involvement of the world’s religions in addressing its causes and alleviating its symptoms. The State of the World 2000 report cites climate change (along with population) as the critical challenge of the new century. It notes that in solving this problem, “all of society’s institutions—from organized re- ligion to corporations—have a role to play.”3 That religions have a role to play along with other institutions and academic disciplines is also the premise of this issue of Dædalus. The call for the involvement of religion begins with the lead essays by a scientist, a policy expert, and an ethicist.

The secular humanist position is not foreign to the notion of religious ideas and values. Images 1 and 2 stress the contemporary secular humanists' optimistic belief in human nature and scientific reason for the attainmentof human fulfillment. "Secular Humanism" and "Scientific Creationism": Proposed Standards for Reviewing Curricular Decisions Affecting Students' Religious Freedom NADiNE STROSSEN* INTRODUCrION Many of the latest skirmishes in the ongoing struggle to maintain public schools' neutrality concerning religion have involved "secular humanism" and "scientific creationism" or "creation science." 1 Some parents, children, and religious leaders assert that public school curricula promote the "religion" of secular humanism and inhibit their own religions, 2 thereby violating the establishment clause and the free exercise clause.3 These parents, students, and religious leaders view the Darwinian theory of evolution as a primary tenet of secular humanism. Consequently, they contend that their religious freedom is violated when a public school's instruction concerning the origins of the universe and mankind considers only the evolutionary theory. To counter this perceived violation, they maintain that any public school discussion of origins must present scientific evidence supporting the theory of 4 creation, as well as the theory of evolution.

    HANDOUT: HUMANISM FACT SHEET Origin: Dates from Greek and Roman antiquity; then, the European Renaissance; then as a philosophic and theological movement in the U.S. and Europe, mid-1800s and again in 1920s and 1930s, through today. Adherents: Number unknown. Two national organizations are the American Humanist Association and the American Ethical Union. Humanist movements and individuals exist in Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, and especially Unitarian Universalism. Humanism plays a role in many people's beliefs or spirituality without necessarily being acknowledged. Humanism also plays a role in most faiths without always being named. Influential Figures/Prophets: Protagoras (Greek philosopher, 5th c. BCE, "Man is the measure of all things"), Jane Addams, Charles Darwin, John Dewey, Abraham Maslow, Isaac Asimov, R. Buckminster Fuller (also a Unitarian), Margaret Sanger, Carl Rogers, Bertrand Russell, Andrei Sakharov Texts: No sacred text. Statements of humanist beliefs and intentions are found in three iterations of The Humanist Manifesto: 1933, 1973, and 2003; these are considered explanations of humanist philosophy, not statements of creed. The motto of the American Humanist Association is "Good without a God." To humanists, the broadest range of religious, scientific, moral, political, social texts and creative literature may be valued. Clergy: None. Humanism is not a formally organized religion. Many Unitarian Universalist and other, especially liberal, clergy are Humanists or humanist-influenced. For congregations in the Ethical Culture movement (at www.eswow.org/what-is-ethical- culture), professional Ethical Culture Leaders fill the roles of religious clergy, including meeting the pastoral needs of members, performing ceremonies, and serving as spokespeople for the congregation.

Man's sexuality as the sum total of what makes him male or female in each case is an important component of his nature - physical and metaphysical. It deserves study and education. That aspect of man's sexuality that has to do with physical genital intercourse constitutes a mere 10 to 15% of his sexuality.' It is, however, the most emotive, delicate, and educationally troublesome aspect of man' s sexuality. There has, therefore, been continuing concern that education in this aspect of man requires the most careful and culturally correct environment, tools, and methods.

Sources and Innovation in Summa theologiae I, Question 1, Article 1 WAYNE HANKEY Dalhousie University Halifax, Nova Scotia Introduction IN 1968, the influential American neo-Calvinist theologian and cultural historian Francis Schaeffer published a small book, Escape from Reason. He located the origin of this disastrous modern “escape” in the division between nature and grace made by Thomas Aquinas, and in his placing grace above nature. By this account,Thomas draws a horizontal line and places grace above it and nature below.This hierarchical division is what Schaeffer calls “the real birth of the humanistic Renaissance,”and of the autonomy of the human intellect.The reader is told that “from the basis of this autonomous principle, philosophy also became free and was separated from revelation.” Establishing the reality and goodness of the natural was a good thing, but by doing it as he did,“Aquinas had opened the way to an autonomous Humanism, an autonomous philosophy, and once the movement gained momentum, there was soon a flood.”1 This was a bad thing. Schaeffer declares that “[a]ny autonomy is wrong” in respect to Christ and the Scriptures.2 Humans, created in the image of God to whom all belongs, demand by nature a rational whole. Once Aquinas made the division, step by step the autonomous rational ate up what was above the line, rendering it either empty or irrational.
