The Argentine 1960s David William Foster It was the time of the Beatles, of high school studies, of “flower power,” of social ist revolution, of a new French movie house, of poetry, of Sartre and Fanon, of Simone de Beauvoir, of Salinger and Kerouac, of Marx and Lenin. It was all of that together. It was also the time of the Cuban Revolution, which opened our hearts, and it was the time of a country, Argentina, which took the first steps to ward vio lence that was to define our future (Fingueret 20-21). Sarmiento’s Facundo continues to be a touchstone of our understanding of nineteenth-century Latin America and is used in a significant percentage of contemporary introductory courses dealing with the history and culture of the region.2 But why should we continue to use Mary Peabody Mann’s Facundo, or Civilization and Barbarism when a complete version, closer to Domingo Sarmiento’s Spanish original, came out a few years ago?3 Perhaps it is because, while we use Facundo, in each of the two English versions, to discuss themes such as liberalism, caudillismo, race relations, civilization and barbarism, Mann’s translation seems to offer one more lesson: about US hegemony. Ilan Stavans, in his introduction to the most commonly used edition of Facundo in English, acknowledges that Sarmiento orchestrated the project of the translation and was fully aware of what was lost and gained in the process. But he further adds that the final version proved to be invaluable as a “manipulated rendition of Sarmiento’s work as well as a rebirth.” The book “was repackaged, rearranged so as to please an audience with little interest in but much pity for the complications of the Hispanic psyche.”4 2. -

Journalism, Literature and Politics in the Formation of Latin American Identities explores the emergence of literary journalism in Latin America as a central aspect in the formation of national identities. Focusing on five periods in Latin American history from the post-colonial times until the 1960s, it follows the evolution of this narrative genre in parallel with the consolidation of professional journalism, the modern Latin American mass media and the formation of nation states. In the process, this dissertation also studies literary journalism as a genre, as a professional practice, and most importantly as a political instrument. By exploring the connections between journalism, literature and politics, this dissertation also illustrates the difference between the notions of factuality, reality and journalistic truth as conceived in Latin America and the United States, while describing the origins of Latin American militant journalism as a social-historical formation. i Table of Contents Introduction. Romancing the Masses: Puig, Perón and Argentine Intellectuals at the Fin de Siècle Dr. Silvia Tandeciarz DePaul University Prepared for delivery at the 1997 meeting of the Latin American Studies Association, Continental Plaza Hotel, Guadalajara, Mexico, April 17-19, 1997. 2 I’d like to begin by situating my intervention here in two contexts: that of my work as a cultural critic in the American Academy and that of my work on Peronism. My comments emerge from questions I have been asking myself regarding the meaning and place of intellectual work, questions that have been overdetermined by polemics central to both, Peronist discourse and the relatively new field of Cultural Studies. My immersion in Cultural Studies has pressed me to ask what it means to be an intellectual in what we might call the age of postmodernism; what are the new challenges that face us, given the new ways in which culture is disseminated, given the new technologies we have to contend with, given the literary permutations they’ve inspired in traditional genres and the transformations of the publishing world, etc.? What is our role? Are we still, in some way, gatekeepers, determining, as Daniel James has written, “notions of social and cultural legitimacy--what Pierre Bourdieu has defined as ‘cultural and symbolic’ capital”?1 Are we secretly activists trying to convert students into militant subversives? What kinds of culture will we promote? What will we teach in “culture and civilization” classes and to what ends? What does it mean to form part of institutions that -

César Galves 2 SÍMBOLOS PATRIOS ESCUDO NACIONAL En enero de 1794, por Real Cédula, la Corona de España fundó el Real Consulado de Buenos Aires, colocando al frente del edificio su escudo, el primero con los colores celeste y blanco que se haya utilizado en Buenos Aires. Manuel Belgrano hizo estampar un escudo muy similar al actual en el estandarte bendecido en Jujuy el 25 de mayo de 1812, y que luego fue depositado en el Cabildo de dicha ciudad. El escudo se hace oficial con el sello usado por la Soberana Asamblea General Constituyente de 1813. Hasta entonces, no existía un sello para legalizar los actos gubernamentales, pues venían utilizándose los sellos de las armas reales que se estampaban en los documentos durante el Virreinato. Ante tal necesidad, la Asamblea comenzó a utilizar un sello propio, inspirado en un modelo que compuso en 1812 el peruano Antonio Isidro de Castro por disposición de Bernardino Rivadavia y que le había sido presentado al Primer Triunvirato. Su forma definitiva quedó fijada en 1900 por Estanislao S. Zeballos, en esos momentos Ministro de Estado; y su arquetipo, establecido en el Decreto 10.302 del año 1944. El Escudo de la Nación Argentina posee una forma oval, dividida en dos “cuarteles”: El superior azul representa la Justicia, la Verdad, la Lealtad y la Fraternidad. El inferior blanco, símbolo de Pureza, Fe, Hidalguía, Integridad, Firmeza y Obediencia. En el cuartel inferior, dos brazos entrelazan sus manos, representando la unión fraternal de los hombres y los pueblos; sostienen una pica, símbolo de la Autoridad, el Mando, la Dignidad y la Soberanía, en cuyo extremo se ubica un gorro frigio que representa la Libertad, la Igualdad y el Sacrificio. -

DUT – Delft University of Technology The role of Ports under globalisation Since 1960s, the port/city relationship has been influenced by external and internal factors, particularly the changes to world transport systems, the revolution in shipping industry and the design of port infrastructure. The traditional role of ports in transport and stocking, loading and unloading, has changed in order to link specialised activities and services inside the port-areas, including industrial, business, commercial, environmental, administrative and logistic services. As globalisation deepens and expands, ports are increasingly becoming the new dynamic knots between the international production and the global distribution networks, and the cores of regional development. The concept of port as a logistic place implies a new port-city relationship, in which the port- functions are not restricted to the port-area but to the whole transport and distribution chain giving more added value to the city (Aldoney Vargas, 1997). The main issues that ports face presently can be summarised as follows (Alemany Llovera, 1997): · To modernise the entire port-structure in terms of organisation, management, equipment and services with new requirements in the “cost-efficiency-quality” relationship. Sarmiento, Echeverría and Hernández’s Implementation of Historical Reciprocation in Argentina’s Battle of Oppression by Stephen Talbot Buys A thesis submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Auburn University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Spanish Auburn, Alabama August 9, 2010 Approved by Patrick Greene, Chair, Assistant Professor of Spanish Jana Gutiérrez, Associate Professor of Spanish Lourdes Betanzos, Associate Professor of Spanish Abstract The socioeconomic state of Argentina during the mid-nineteenth century is characterized by a search for identity and rescue from governmental oppression. The study of various genres of literature is valuable in developing a proper understanding of the problems and remedies presented by the authors of that time period. Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, writer of Facundo, Esteban Echeverría, author of “El Matadero” and La Cautiva, and José Hernández, writer of Martín Fierro offer a fitting variety of works including prose and poetry to this study of their common theme of oppression as a socioeconomic issue in Argentina’s search for identity. Throughout this investigation, each author implements historical reciprocation by utilizing a past event and the drama within the work to diagnose the issue of governmental oppression and offer a prognosis for the future of the nation. The article will suggest that the texts and ways of reaching some materials and perspectives in Argentina, remains at a national level. It is important to notice that in order to read criticism and theory regarding Latin American literature, Spanish from Río de la Plata separates at some point the fields. In that regard, one of the greatest assets and achievements of Argentinian literary research concerns the relationship between politics and fiction. In connection with this it might be asked how we can think of Argentinian literature without linking it to the social discourse? How can we think of the comparative field of Latin-American and Argentinian literature as one academic area of studies? In our view, comparatism seems to be one of the loneliest areas of studies in terms of the fields of theory, fiction and criticism. We thus suggest that in Argentina, literary research and criticism in general are strictly concerned with only one option: the national culture. Thus, exclusively, western theoretical frames are chosen to read literature and comparative perspectives are mostly applied to European studies. That is why I insist on the fact that comparative literary research is not represented institutionally at all. civilización y barbarie en facundo de domingo faustino sarmiento Eduardo M ejía * Durante 1987, en uno de los sem inarios de la maestría en Historia andina, el profesor Germán Colmenares puso a disposición de sus estudiantes los ensayos -en ese entonces todavía inéditos- de su libro Las convenciones contra la cultura. Uno de esos discípulos elaboró en aquella ocasión un artículo inspirado en los estudios sobre historiografía hispanoam ericana del profesor Colmenares. La publica ción de ese artículo sirve ahora para recordarlo en la conmemoración de los diez años de su muerte. Ahora, aquel alumno es el Jefe del Departamento de Historia. El presente trabajo tiene por objeto hacer un comentario crítico a la obra Facundodel historiador argentino Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. Para cumplir con este propósito dividiré este escrito en dos partes: primero elaboraré una descripción de la obra en cuestión teniendo en cuenta las tesis generales del autor y la distribución temática por él planteada: segundo, realizaré un comentario crítico a partir de algunas lecturas sobre el tema y especialmente, el libro las Con venciones contra la cultura del profesor Germán Colmenares.
