FSC.DEL/11/15 28 January 2015 ENGLISH only Statement by the Delegation of Ukraine at the 777-th FSC Plenary Meeting (28 January 2015 at 10.00, Hofburg) Mr. Chairman, The Russian aggression against Ukraine, which resulted in illegal occupation and annexation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, as well as escalation in Ukraine’s east, continues and produces a sharply growing number of casualties among civilians and servicemen in Ukraine. On 24 January, Russian‐backed terrorists committed another heinous crime. The deliberate shelling by Grad missiles of the residential areas of the city of Mariupol, followed a number of earlier terrorist attacks, among them the shellings of the civilian bus near Volnovakha, of the trolleybus stop in Donetsk, of residential areas in many towns and villages. The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission’s assessment concluded that the attack had been carried out through the use of Grad and Uragan rockets fired from areas controlled by the “Donetsk People’s Republic”. On January 25, the Ukrainian government reported that the toll from the attack had reached 30 dead and 102 wounded. The Ukrainian Security Service collected evidence, including telephone intercepts and the account of the accomplice of this murderous act, that the artillery attack on peaceful Mariupol was committed by the Russian artillery battery commanded by a Russian officer with a call sign "Pepel". Mr. Chairman, Distinguished colleagues, The cold‐blooded murder of 30 civilians and wounding of more than a hundred people by pro‐Russian terrorists in Mariupol is a crime against humanity. The Ukrainian authorities will do all in their power to make sure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are brought to justice. -
Perception of Local Geographical Specificity by the Population of Podolia
88 ЕКОНОМІЧНА ТА СОЦІАЛЬНА ГЕОГРАФІЯ PERCEPTION OF LOCAL GEOGRAPHICAL SPECIFICITY BY THE POPULATION OF PODOLIA Oleksiy GNATIUK Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Ukraine [email protected] Abstract: The article reveals the perception of local geographical specificity by the population of Podolia. Attention is focused on five elements of the local geographical specificity: natural, historical and cultural monuments; prominent personalities; trademarks and producers of goods and services; the origin settlement names; figurative poetic names of settlements. The tasks were the following: to determine basic qualitative and quantitative parameters of regional image-geographical systems, to find the main regularities of their spatial organization, and, finally, to classify administrative-territorial units of the region according to the basic properties of image-geographic systems using specially worked out method. Analysis made it clear that the population of Podolia is characterized by a high level of reflection of the local geographic specificity. Local image-geographical systems from different parts of the region have different structure and level of development. In particular, image-geographical systems in Vinnytsia and Ternopil oblasts are well developed, stable and hierarchized, in Khmelnitskyi oblast it is just developing, dynamic and so quite unstable. To further disclosure the regularities and patterns of local geographical specificity perception, it is advisable to carry out case studies of image-geographic systems at the level of individual settlements. Nations in Transit brief May 2018 Far-right Extremism as a Threat to Ukrainian Democracy Vyacheslav Likhachev Kyiv-based expert on right-wing groups in Ukraine and Russia Photo by Aleksandr Volchanskiy • Far-right political forces present a real threat to the democratic development of Ukrainian society. This brief seeks to provide an overview of the nature and extent of their activities, without overstating the threat they pose. To this end, the brief differentiates between radical groups, which by and large ex- press their ideas through peaceful participation in democratic processes, and extremist groups, which use physical violence as a means to influence society. • For the first 20 years of Ukrainian independence, far-right groups had been undisputedly marginal elements in society. But over the last few years, the situation has changed. After Ukraine’s 2014 Euro- maidan Revolution and Russia’s subsequent aggression, extreme nationalist views and groups, along with their preachers and propagandists, have been granted significant legitimacy by the wider society. • Nevertheless, current polling data indicates that the far right has no real chance of being elected in the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections in 2019. Similarly, despite the fact that several of these groups have real life combat experience, paramilitary structures, and even access to arms, they are not ready or able to challenge the state. • Extremist groups are, however, aggressively trying to impose their agenda on Ukrainian society, in- cluding by using force against those with opposite political and cultural views. They are a real physical threat to left-wing, feminist, liberal, and LGBT activists, human rights defenders, as well as ethnic and religious minorities. -
Photogrammetry ‑Based Spatial Analyses of Settlements in Severynivka and Nemyriv
Baltic‑Pontic Studies vol. 21: 2016, 54‑68 ISSN 1231‑0344 Marcin Ławniczak* PHOTOGRAMMETRY ‑BASED SPATIAL ANALYSES OF SETTLEMENTS IN SEVERYNIVKA AND NEMYRIV ABSTRACT During the Polish‑Ukrainian archaeological project “Fortresses of Ukraine” it was proposed to study two of the most significant sites with the newest possible technology. The final decision was made to apply the digital photogrammetry that was acquired with the use of drones. Key words: photogrammetry, Scythian time, hillfort, fortification, defensive structures, Early Iron Age A significant obstacle towards the study of the settlements of the forest‑steppe zone in the Pontic area was their size and the construction of the fortifications. In Nemyriv the size of the settlement ranged from 100 ha [Smirnova 1996: 67] to 250 ha, with the final version being 145 ha [Daragan 2010: 38‑41]. Similar inaccu‑ racies were recorded for other sites. Due to the constant erosion of the escarpment, caused by the construction of a railway track in the 19th century, the area of sites is constantly decreasing. As a result, the descriptions presented by G.I. Smirnova [Smirnova 1961: 89‑92] and B.M. Lobay [Lobay 1986] are no longer valid. During the Polish ‑Ukrainian archaeological project “Fortresses of Ukraine”, it was proposed to study two of the most significant sites with the newest possible technology. Due to the size of the settlements in Nemyriv and Severynivka, the possibility of measuring the sites using ground methods was rejected. УДК 552.14:004.942 REGIONAL STRUCTURAL-LITHOLOGICAL1MODELING OF SEDIMENTARY COVER D.P. Khrushchev Institute of Geological Sciences of NAS of Ukraine, Kiev, Ukraine, E-mail: [email protected] Doctor of geological-mineralogical sciences, professor, senior research worker. The idea of the project is the construction of computer (digital) structural-lithological models (DSLM) of sedimentary cover for state territories on regional principle proceeding from the defi- nition of geological region as a basic geostructural unit of Earth crust. Digital structural-lithological model – it is three-demensional computer representation of the geological objects, comprising it’s structural and qualitative characteristics. Methodological principles, methods, available de- velopments and modeling patterns are reflected to prove the feasibility of the project realization. Practical goal of modeling is the creation of integral geoinformatic foundation for multilateral cog- nitive image of an object and for information provision of all directories and kinds of human geo- logical activity (R&D) on multilateral use and protection (including geological hazards) of geological environment. The result achieved is obtaining of single united system of regional DSLM on state territorial level. The project proposed represents a part of conceptual compound project, the object of which has to comprise both sedimentary cover and magmatic, metamorphic for- mations. The achieved result of such a project is the developing of the integral digital structural- lithological-petrological model of Earth crust as a whole.
