We then took an early evening flight to the Armenian capital, Yerevan. After meeting our driver and ornithologist guide for the trip Hasmik, we took a short drive to a comfy city hotel, the Aviatrans in bustling Yerevan city, arriving by mid-evening and in time for a light evening meal at the hotel. Day 2 Sunday 21st June Hatsavan, Gaghadir and Garni After an excellent buffet breakfast we headed south-east, driving for just under an hour to steppe and semi- desert habitat near Hatsavan. Our first taster of Yerevan butterflies was at a road junction west of Garni, where we had a little time in between transferring from our air conditioned minibus into jeeps for the bumpy road ahead. Here, in the arid bushy steppe, Clouded Yellow and Queen of Spain Fritillary were seen. Our first scheduled stop for butterflies was in a beautiful semi-desert area several kilometres down this dusty road which leads to Lanjazat. -

These rugged mountains rise steeply from Turkey’s Black Sea coast and are an extension of the Caucasus mountains which are considered by the World Wide Fund for Nature to be a global biodiversity hotspot. The Kaçkars are thought to be the richest area for butterflies in this range, a hotspot in a hotspot with over 160 resident species. The valley of the River Çoruh lies at the heart of the Kaçkar and the centre of the trip explored its upper reaches at altitudes of 1,300—2,300m. The area consists of steep-sided valleys with dry Mediterranean vegetation, typically with dense woodland and trees in the valley bottoms interspersed with small hay-meadows. In the upper reaches these merge into alpine meadows with wet flushes and few trees. The highest mountain in the range is Kaçkar Dağı with an elevation of 3,937 metres The tour was centred around the two charming little villages of Barhal and Olgunlar, the latter being at the fur- thest end of the valley that you can reach by car. The area is very remote and only accessed by a narrow road that winds its way up the valley providing extraordinary views that change with every turn. -

Martin Collinson and Tim Melling ABSTRACT Records of Iberian Chiffchaff Phylloscopus ibericus in northern Europe are increasing. At the time of writing, all British records have been singing males. In this paper, we present sonograms of some accepted and potential Iberian Chiffchaffs from Britain.The characteristics of Iberian Chiffchaff song that can be used for identification of vagrants are reviewed. A record of a bird at Skelmersdale, Lancashire, in 2004, is thought unlikely to have been an Iberian Chiffchaff, but another bird, a mixed singer at Dibbinsdale, Merseyside, also in 2004, may be acceptable.The vocalisations of an accepted Iberian Chiffchaff in Oxfordshire in 2000 are now considered not to be absolutely typical. A problematic bird at Lavenham, Suffolk, in 2007 is also discussed and thought not to be acceptable. It also touches “West Asian- East African Flyway”. Presence of number of high-altitude wetlands (>2500 m amsl altitude) with thin human population makes Ladakh a suitable habitat for migration and breeding of continental birds, including wetlands of very big size (e.g., Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri, Tso Kar, etc.). C O M M O N S A N D P I P E R Ladakh provides a vast habitat for the water birds through its complex Ladakh landscape has significance network of wetlands including two being located at the conjunction of most important wetlands (Tso Moriri, four zoogeographic zones of the world Tso Kar) which have been designated (Palearctic, Oriental, Sino-Japanese and as Ramsar sites. Their 21 species were identified belonging to 3 different families from Kohat, Pakistan during September-December 2008. The reported families Namphalidae covered 33%, Papilionidae 10%, and Pieridae 57% biodiversity of butterflies of Kohat. In Namphalidae included: species belonging to subfamily Nymphalinae, Indian fritillary, Argynnis hyperbius Linnaeus; common castor, Ariadne merione (Cramer); painted lady, Cynthia cardui (Linnaeus); peacock pansy, Junonia almanac Linnaeus; blue pansy, J. orithya Linnaeus; common leopard, Phalantha phalantha (Drury); specie belonging to subfamily Satyrinae, white edged rock brown, Hipparchia parisatis (Kollar). In Papilionidae included: subfamily Papilioninae, lime butterfly, Papilio demoleus Linnaeus and common mormon, Pa. polytes Linnaeus. In Pieridae included: subfamily Coliaclinae, dark clouded yellow, Colias croceus (Geoffroy); subfamily Coliadinae, lemon emigrant, Catopsilia pomona Fabricius; little orange tip, C. etrida Boisduval; blue spot arab, Colotis protractus Butler; common grass yellow, Eumera hecab (Linnaeus); common brimstone, Gonepteryx rhamni (Linnaeus); yellow orange tip, Ixias pyrene Linnaeus; subfamily Pierinae, pioneer white butterfly, Belenoi aurota Bingham; Murree green-veined white, Pieris ajaka Moore; large cabbage white, P. brassicae Linnaeus; green-veined white, P. napi (Linnaeus); small cabbage white, P. rapae Linnaeus. We were welcomed to a sunny Ladakh - a place with the most outstanding landscape, high altitude birds and wildlife; and to add to this, the lovely Ladakhi people. We met Sujan and Khendrap at the airport before driving through the busy Leh town to our pretty little hotel, the Mantra Cottage. Our rooms were ready, and after a welcome breakfast we had some rest. Some went on a bike to see the city and spotted a few of the common birds of Leh including House Sparrow, Green-backed Tit, Black Redstart, Black-billed Magpie, Mountain Chiffchaff and Oriental Turtle Dove. After briefing and dinner we retired to bed again: a rule of the land - or the altitude will get you! Day 3 Sunday 5th July Jigmet, a local wildlife guide, joined us today. We started the day by visiting Stok marsh where we saw Ibisbill feeding along the shingle beds in the middle of the river. We also had some great views of Common Rosefinch, Mountain Chiffchaff, Bluethroat and Hume’s Whitethroat.
