Martin Collinson and Tim Melling ABSTRACT Records of Iberian Chiffchaff Phylloscopus ibericus in northern Europe are increasing. At the time of writing, all British records have been singing males. In this paper, we present sonograms of some accepted and potential Iberian Chiffchaffs from Britain.The characteristics of Iberian Chiffchaff song that can be used for identification of vagrants are reviewed. A record of a bird at Skelmersdale, Lancashire, in 2004, is thought unlikely to have been an Iberian Chiffchaff, but another bird, a mixed singer at Dibbinsdale, Merseyside, also in 2004, may be acceptable.The vocalisations of an accepted Iberian Chiffchaff in Oxfordshire in 2000 are now considered not to be absolutely typical. A problematic bird at Lavenham, Suffolk, in 2007 is also discussed and thought not to be acceptable. We then took an early evening flight to the Armenian capital, Yerevan. After meeting our driver and ornithologist guide for the trip Hasmik, we took a short drive to a comfy city hotel, the Aviatrans in bustling Yerevan city, arriving by mid-evening and in time for a light evening meal at the hotel. Day 2 Sunday 21st June Hatsavan, Gaghadir and Garni After an excellent buffet breakfast we headed south-east, driving for just under an hour to steppe and semi- desert habitat near Hatsavan. Our first taster of Yerevan butterflies was at a road junction west of Garni, where we had a little time in between transferring from our air conditioned minibus into jeeps for the bumpy road ahead. Here, in the arid bushy steppe, Clouded Yellow and Queen of Spain Fritillary were seen. Our first scheduled stop for butterflies was in a beautiful semi-desert area several kilometres down this dusty road which leads to Lanjazat.

    ARMENIA Cranes, Raptors & Culture 29 August – 10 September 2017 TOUR REPORT Leaders: John Muddeman & Hasmik Ter-Voskanyan Tuesday 29 August 2017: Transfer day to Armenia Meeting at the departure gate in the pleasant Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris for our Air France flights, we boarded a slightly delayed flight to Yerevan, which otherwise went without a hitch, even just starting to descend in time over eastern Anatolia to give those with window seats an inkling of the vast areas of sometimes hilly semi desert conditions on the ground. With the light fading fast as we landed, we all finally left the plane and negotiated the security check. Being a familiar face from 2016, we quickly found Lilit our local guide and Vaharam our driver in the modern Zvartnots Airport and made our way through a quite busy Yerevan to our centrally located hotel. A swift check-in saw us down just 15 minutes afterwards for a late dinner, since although it was only effectively 7:00 pm UK time (being three hours ahead locally), after the nearly five hour flight and almost day-long transfer for most, we were happy to retire early and get ready for our (mostly) cultural introductory day in the country. Wednesday 30 August 2017: Arch of Charenc, Garni Temple, Geghard Monastery, Yerevan (lunch/tour) With temperatures forecast to reach around 35ºC, we had an 8am breakfast and were out 90 minutes later, having changed money just over the road. Despite it being the ‘cultural day’ of the tour, we all took binoculars, cameras and scopes along anyway, 'just in case'! Indeed, Yerevan had even yielded hooded crows, calling Syrian woodpecker and a laughing dove of most note for the early risers in the hotel surroundings.

We met Sujan and Khendrap at the airport before driving through the busy Leh town to our pretty little hotel, the Mantra Cottage. Our rooms were ready, and after a welcome breakfast we had some rest. Some went on a bike to see the city and spotted a few of the common birds of Leh including House Sparrow, Green-backed Tit, Black Redstart, Black-billed Magpie, Mountain Chiffchaff and Oriental Turtle Dove. After briefing and dinner we retired to bed again: a rule of the land - or the altitude will get you! Day 3 Sunday 5th July Jigmet, a local wildlife guide, joined us today. We started the day by visiting Stok marsh where we saw Ibisbill feeding along the shingle beds in the middle of the river. We also had some great views of Common Rosefinch, Mountain Chiffchaff, Bluethroat and Hume’s Whitethroat.

This tour is full of regional specialities and Indian subcontinent endemics, and among the many highlights were a total of 53 individual Owls seen of 9 species, including Dusky Eagle Owl on a nest, four Tawny Fish Owls and four Brown Fish Owls. We had great fortune with gamebirds, with three Cheer Pheasants plus stunning views of a pair of Koklass Pheasant, plus many Kalij Pheasants, Painted Spurfowl 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Birds and Tigers of Northern India www.birdquest-tours.com and Jungle Bush-Quail. We also saw Ibisbill, Red-naped Ibis, Black-necked Stork, Sarus Cranes, Indian, Himalayan and Red-headed Vulture, Pallas's and Lesser Fish Eagles, Brown Crake, Indian and Great Stone- curlew, Yellow-wattled and White-tailed Lapwing, Black-bellied and River Tern, Painted and Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse, and 15 species of Woodpecker including Great Slaty, Himalayan Pied, White-naped and Himalayan Flameback. We found plenty of Slaty-headed and Plum-headed Parakeet, Black-headed Jay, a Rufous-tailed Lark, Indian Bush Lark, the holy trinity of Nepal, Pygmy and Scaly-bellied Wren-Babblers, plus Brook’s Leaf Warbler, Black-faced and Booted Warbler, Black-chinned Babbler, six species of Laughingthrush including Rufous-chinned, Chestnut-bellied and White-tailed Nuthatch, Wallcreeper, Chestnut and Black-throated Thrushes, White-tailed Rubythroat, Golden Bush Robin, dapper Spotted Forktails, Blue-capped Redstart, Variable Wheatear, Fire-tailed Sunbird, Black-breasted Weaver, Altai Accentor, Brown Bullfinch, Blyth’s Rosefinch (a write-in), Crested, White-capped and Red-headed Bunting.
