    RAPID Ceirano & C., Welleyes, F.lli Ceirano, STAR Rapid, Matteo C. & C., Itala, Ceirano-Ansaldo, SPA, Junior, SCAT, S.A.Giovanni Ceirano: sono undici aziende, accomunate da due denominatori, sono tutte nate a Torino e sono tutte sorte per iniziativa di uno o dell'altro dei fratelli Ceirano. Addentrarsi nelle vite e nelle frenetiche attività dei quattro fratelli, distinguendo l'apporto di ciascuno, non è facile. I Ceirano sono una famiglia piemontese, originaria di Cuneo, composta da padre, madre e quattro fratelli: Giovanni Battista, nato nel 1860, Giovanni, nato nel 1865, Matteo, il viveur della famiglia, di cinque anni più giovane, ed Ernesto, nato dopo altri cinque anni. A questi si aggiunge in un secondo tempo il figlio di Giovanni che, con una certa mancanza di fantasia, è battezzato Giovanni e chiamato Ernesto. Come si vede, ci sono già i presupposti per una bella confusione, anche a prescindere dai rispettivi caratteri, che sicuramente devono essere stati piuttosto determinati, per non dire litigiosi e testardi, anche perché uno dopo l'altro si consacrano al medesimo mestiere: fondare aziende automobilistiche. Fondare, per poi andarsene, o fonderle con altre, o scioglierle, o rilevarle, in un caleidoscopio di società che vivacizzarono ed arricchirono molto il panorama industriale torinese ed italiano. Il primo a muoversi è naturalmente Giovanni Battista, il più anziano. Fonda la Ceirano & C. nel 1898 e la Welleyes nel 1899; quindi nel 1901, insieme a Matteo, la F.lli Ceirano, in corso Vittorio Emanuele 9. Liquidata questa nel 1903, nel 1904 trasforma la Ceirano & C. in STAR, Società Torinese Automobili Rapid, oggetto di questa breve indagine.

    SIATA Daina “Gran Sport” SL*0203* Stabilimenti Farina #9683 (historical compilation and presentation by John de Boer) Perhaps the first “Gran Sport”? ** August, 1951 Purchased by Hector S. Scheffer (Illinois), evidently with the idea of becoming a dealer/agent. His advertisement translated the model name to “Grand Sports Roadster” The designation from SIATA would have been “spider Gran Sport”. This advertisement appeared on the rear cover of the Elkhart Lake race program for August 26, 1951 Hector Scheffer was also responsible for printing the race program. The car appeared at Elkhart and was photographed in color. Photo courtesy of Yellowstone SCCA Scheffer also entered and raced at Watkins Glen in September Tony Pompeo entered the car in October at the Convair Trophy Races at Allentown, Pennsylvania I don’t know if he raced it himself. This may be Scheffer at the wheel once again? The image I have that shows the same car is not one I feel can be published without permission not yet received. Unlike many later Gran Sport examples, this car used standard Fiat 1400 wheels with 14-inch Pirelli tires. There was another Gran Sport that featured a similar windscreen, but it is clearly a later car. ** When I indicate that this car may be the “first Gran Sport”, I have to acknowledge that I do not know what form the original body on SL*0201*S had. That car exists today as a coupe from about 1953/54 that may be by Vignale. There are other chassis numbers that are completely undescribed as well. Pompeo (“PAVIA” = Pompeo and Valenzano Italian Automobiles) and John Edgar teamed up to advertise in Road & Track magazine with an image of this car as part of the promotion.

    The DeTomaso Mangusta An Italian exotic that happened by accident.. By Rick Feibusch In the good old days, years before the implementation of emissions and safety laws, exotic high-performance automakers woul d just build a car, display it at a few key international auto shows and start taking orders. There wasn't even a legal requirement that the manufacturer road test a prototype before the first production models were delivered to the public! Italian automakers were particularly prone to using the public to test their cars - after delivery. The DeTomaso Mangusta was a particularly interesting example. The Mangusta was born out of the ambition of Argentinian race driver Alejandro De Tomaso who, like many othe r racers, yearned to build his own cars. DeTomaso was born to a wealthy family in a small town near Buenos Aires. He left Argentina in 1955, just one step ahead of Juan Peron's goon squads, having offended the great dictator with political writings publi shed in a local newspaper. Peron, like his idol Adolph Hitler, loved sports cars and heavily supported successful drivers like Juan Manuel Fangio because he believed that if drivers from his country won races, it showed a national superiority. Since DeTomaso wouldn't play ball, he was excluded from the gravy train. DeTomaso left for Italy, the land of his grandparents with only $126 in his racing jumpsuit He met Isabelle Haskell, a rich American woman who owned and raced a Siata and a Maserati. Any input welcomed at [email protected] ** First off, Renato Ambrosini, son of the builder and winner of the 1948 Italian Sport 750 championship in the first example built, did not remember if “SC” represented “Sport Corsa” or “Sport da Competizione” when I spoke with him during the 1980’s and 1990’s. Either way, the meaning is essentially the same. Some background: During 1947 to 1954, there was the possibility of building a “Sport 750” category car that could also race in a certain number of “Corsa 750” races held throughout Italy. The “SC” was Siata’s version of such a car for 1948. Early in 1948, Siata was authorized by the Italian government to issue its own chassis numbers. Prior to that time, cars prepared and/or completely constructed by Siata generally carried a Fiat chassis number. In certain rare cases, a car was assigned a “numero d’ufficio”, a number assigned by local motoring authorities. It seems that the tubular-chassis “SC” was the first series of purpose-made chassis to become numbered by SIATA. S.I.A.T.A. was an acronym that changed during 1948/1949 from “Società Italiana Applicazioni Techniche Auto- Aviatorie” to “Società Italiana Auto Trasformazioni Accessori”. Company literature and advertisements often listed the name simply as “Siata”. SIATA was formed 1926 by Giorgio Ambrosini and continued under him to 1959 when the company merged briefly with Abarth, becoming “Siata-Abarth” until 1961. During 1961, it became “SIATA-AUTO” under the direction of Giorgio Ambrosini and one of his sons, Renato Ambrosini.
