A Blu-ray version was released in the UK in October of the same year. Special features include deleted scenes with optional commentary by director Boyle; web production diaries; 2 short films with introduction by Boyle; commentary by director Boyle; commentary by Dr. Brian Cox, University of Manchester; enhanced viewing mode with the filmmakers of Sunshine ; Journey Into Sound — surround sound enhancement; and the theatrical trailer in high definition. The film was moderately well received in the UK by critics. Among mainstream critics in the US, the film received generally positive reviews. Sunshine fulfills the dual requisite necessary to become classic sci-fi: dazzling visuals with intelligent action. Sean Axmaker, writing in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer , said the film presented a "visionary odyssey with a grace and awe and visual scope that calls to mind Stanley Kubrick's A Space Odyssey for a new millennium, with echoes of the industrial grunge and crew friction of Alien , the greenhouse ecology of Silent Running , even the unraveling sanity of Dark Star. This film reflects education excellence. Mark Tildesley's sensible, not-too-futuristic sets, lensed with cool reserve by Alwin Kuchler. The drummed-up suspense at the end is not essential, since Boyle and Garland seem more interested in the metaphysics of the voyage; Tarkovsky's Solaris demonstrated that if you go all the way with the implications of such a situation, it's more interesting than using plot devices. Conversely, writing for the San Francisco Chronicle , Mick Lasalle bluntly noted that the motion picture starts out "bad" and later "gets worse". He summed up his displeasure by stating, " "Sunshine" has nothing to offer, and this nothing is going to be offered relentlessly and earnestly, like a holy missive. Unenthusiastic, she affirmed, "There are the predictable malfunctions that compromise the space craft, the banal speechifying about the fate of mankind, the issue of who will live and who will die. Who cares? The characters are so sketchily drawn that it's hard to keep them straight, let alone get worked up about their survival. It cheapens the sentiment, and the film doesn't recover. Nathan Lee of The Village Voice said the film "works despite feeling both over-familiar and over-ambitious.     ABSTRACT Title of Document: COMMUNICATING FEAR IN FILM MUSIC: A SOCIOPHOBIC ANALYSIS OF ZOMBIE FILM SOUNDTRACKS Pedro Gonzalez-Fernandez Master of Arts, 2014 Directed By: Dr. Patrick Warfield, Musicology The horror film soundtrack is a complex web of narratological, ethnographic, and semiological factors all related to the social tensions intimated by a film. This study examines four major periods in the zombie’s film career—the Voodoo zombie of the 1930s and 1940s, the invasion narratives of the late 1960s, the post-apocalyptic survivalist fantasies of the 1970s and 1980s, and the modern post-9/11 zombie—to track how certain musical sounds and styles are indexed with the content of zombie films. Two main musical threads link the individual films’ characterization of the zombie and the setting: Othering via different types of musical exoticism, and the use of sonic excess to pronounce sociophobic themes.     d “nOt YOuR GRandFatHeR’S ­ SHeRlOCk HOlMeS”: ­ Guy Ritchie’s 21st Century Reboot of a ­ 19th Century british Icon ­ Ashley Liening Sherlock Holmes “has enjoyed the most vigorous afterlife of any fictional character” posits thomas leitch, adaptation scholar and author of Film Adaptation and Its Discontents (leitch 207). Indeed, a franchise has been built around Sir arthur Conan doyle’s quirky detective, so much so that Sherlock Holmes has become one of the most adapted literary figures of all time, outnumbered only by Frankenstein’s monster, tarzan, and dracula (207). Clare Parody asserts, “Franchise practice has produced and surrounded some of the highest grossing and best-known fictional texts, characters, plots, and worlds of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries,” and Sherlock Holmes is no exception (211). From 1900 till the present day, Sherlock Holmes has been portrayed by “nearly 100 actors, in over 200 films, from more than a dozen different countries,” and it does not appear like “Sir arthur Conan doyle’s violin- playing, pipe-smoking, cocaine-injecting sleuth” is going any- where anytime soon (Cook 31). In fact, the twenty-first century has experienced a resurgence in more “straightforward” Holmes adaptations, namely bbC’s Sherlock (2010), which aired in three ninety-minute episodes and portrays a tech-savvy twenty-first century Holmes, and Guy Ritchie’s 2009 and 2011 35 ­ big screen adaptations, the latter of which will be the focus of this essay. I aim to explore the ways in which Guy Ritchie’s Sher­ lock Holmes (2009) adaptation, while inextricably bound to Conan doyle’s storytelling franchise, diverges from its prede- cessors in that it is not an amalgamation of other Holmes adap- tations.
