The companies are offering complimentary tickets to the movie to 50,000 students, with AMC leading outreach to schools and community groups, with a special focus on high school computer classes, math and science teams and LGBT clubs being encouraged to attend at 180 theaters presenting the movie. The free high school screenings of the film at AMC will include a special taped introductory message from IMITATION GAME screenwriter Graham Moore, who was awarded last weekend with the Oscar® for Best Adapted Screenplay. Students can present their student ID at the participating AMC box office to receive a free ticket. It has since become the year’s top grossing independent film at the domestic box office, with $84.4M in ticket sales to date. Produced by Black Bear Pictures and Bristol Automotive, the film won the Academy Award® for Best Adapted Screenplay (Graham Moore) and was nominated for seven others, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Benedict Cumberbatch), Best Supporting Actress (Keira Knightley) and Best Director (Morten Tyldum.) It was also nominated for five Golden Globe® Awards, included in the American Film Institute’s top 11 films of the year and nominated for three Screen Actors Guild Awards. Directed by Tyldum, produced by Nora Grossman, Ido Ostrowsky and Teddy Schwarzman, with a screenplay by Moore, the film stars Cumberbatch, Knightley, Matthew Goode, Rory Kinnear, Allen Leech, Matthew Beard, Charles Dance and Mark Strong. During the winter of 1952, British authorities entered the home of mathematician, cryptanalyst and war hero Alan Turing (Cumberbatch) to investigate a reported burglary. They instead ended up arresting Turing himself on charges of ‘gross indecency’, an accusation that would lead to his devastating conviction for the criminal offense of homosexuality – little did officials know, they were actually incriminating the pioneer of modern-day computing. Famously leading a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess champions and intelligence officers, he was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany's World War II Enigma machine. An intense and haunting portrayal of a brilliant, complicated man, THE IMITATION GAME follows a genius who under nail-biting pressure helped to shorten the war and, in turn, save millions of lives. Clare Parody asserts, “Franchise practice has produced and surrounded some of the highest grossing and best-known fictional texts, characters, plots, and worlds of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries,” and Sherlock Holmes is no exception (211). From 1900 till the present day, Sherlock Holmes has been portrayed by “nearly 100 actors, in over 200 films, from more than a dozen different countries,” and it does not appear like “Sir arthur Conan doyle’s violin- playing, pipe-smoking, cocaine-injecting sleuth” is going any- where anytime soon (Cook 31). In fact, the twenty-first century has experienced a resurgence in more “straightforward” Holmes adaptations, namely bbC’s Sherlock (2010), which aired in three ninety-minute episodes and portrays a tech-savvy twenty-first century Holmes, and Guy Ritchie’s 2009 and 2011 35 ­ big screen adaptations, the latter of which will be the focus of this essay. I aim to explore the ways in which Guy Ritchie’s Sher­ lock Holmes (2009) adaptation, while inextricably bound to Conan doyle’s storytelling franchise, diverges from its prede- cessors in that it is not an amalgamation of other Holmes adap- tations.
