At Jewish summer camp, too (where I will be in July as a rabbi L’Shalom, on staff), there was so much I loved, but the music was beyond anything I could imagine. We had song sessions with so much Rabbi Greengrass spirit that everyone would get up and dance. I would sing out Hebrew words, having no idea what they meant, while putting my whole soul into them.

Music takes us beyond words and into the holy. Music is a way to open up parts that we don’t know are closed. It’s a way to communicate feelings that go beyond words. It’s elevating, it’s spiritual, it’s home.

When I went to Rabbinical school, I insisted that I had to go to the New York campus even though Cincinnati was much closer to home. I wanted to take classes with the Cantors; I wanted to hear them give their senior seminars, hear their arrangements to scripture they were writing, learning, leading.

Music is also a big piece of what made me fall in love with Beth Am. I remember my first Shabbat, as just a candidate to become assistant rabbi, hearing the voices of Cantor Lisa Segal and (the famous) Cantor Rachelle Nelson. Their voices together elevated the service. I remember telling my (newlywed) husband, “If I come here, I will be able to pray.”

How blessed is Beth Am to have had such amazing musicians? Not just cantors, but soloists, talented teens, kids’ choirs, and congregants who lend their talents like Rick Wolf and Billy, Deanna and the entire Whitman family.

As I write this, Cantor Nelson is finishing packing up her office. It is her talent and grace that has sustained Beth Am to this day. I am so grateful for her. Not just for her voice and bringing so much

Stuart Ratzan has done a magnificent job navigating David uncharted waters. He worked tirelessly with Rabbi Barras, Rabbi Greengrass, Rabbi Aklepi, Cantor Nelson, Executive Director Brian Chartock, all the directors and our staff. We are also grateful toLily Serviansky and the Beyond the Curve Campaign and to all our lay leadership. Surviving this past year has been a team effort. Thanks to them all, we not only survived, we flourished. That was all accomplished under Stuart’s leadership, and it establishes a foundation for greatness for years to come at Beth Am. But only if...... only if you take an active role in Beth Am. Please get involved!

We have to plan for our future. I am establishing a committee to formulate a long-range strategic plan for our Temple to ensure we keep Beth Am at the top. As your incoming President, I have a lot to learn. But I already know it will take your participation in our Temple to preserve and foster our greatness. We need your ideas about Shabbat services, High Holy Day observances, membership, Day School, Religious School, community outreach, congregational outreach, and so much more. Let us know what you think, and join in. There is literally something for everyone. A list of programs and committees will be emailed to each of you. Don’t be shy. Beth Am is your family. We have been here through trying times, Beyond the Curve: A Summer to Remember Every summer creates family memories. The summer memories for our Beth Am family will last a lifetime. It will truly be a summer to remember. THIS SUMMER… • We will complete Phase One of our Beyond the Curve campus renovation… on time! • Our brand-new State-of-the Art school building will be open this fall so we can provide the highest level of educational opportunities to the largest number of students. Our enrollment reflects the excitement we are creating. • Phase 2 demolition and construction will begin in order to build our Cultural and Activity Center, the Outdoor Cultural Life Center, and the creation of an expanded central outdoor space on our campus.

These remarkable accomplishments would not happen without the generous participation of so many families — allowing us to reach these milestones. I FOUND A NEW FRIEND

Making friends at my age is not an easy thing. But it hap- pened, right here, at Temple Beth Am.

We all live and work in a fast-paced world. In my position, I hardly have the time to stop and collect; it is a constant wheel of actions and doings, of solving issues, creating new programs, welcoming new families and nurturing the ones we have.

However, meeting Nora Anderson, the new Day School Head of School, gave me the opportunity to find a new partner in education.

Throughout the year, Nora and I exchanged ideas, programs, discussed our visions for the schools and realized that our thoughts and intentions are so well aligned that we organi- cally became partners - partners in infusing Judaism through play, through experiences, through living our lessons.

Nora and I believe in collaboration, in better results when putting our heads and hearts together. We believe that no school is better than another, just different; and we believe that Judaism can be fun and exciting. Nora and I are life- long students and educators, are Israel lovers, are reflective in our methods and share a common purpose: to instill in our children and their families a love of Judaism and Israel.

With a new building that will become the beacon of Jewish education in South Dade, our Day School and Religious School teachers will be meeting at the beginning of the school year to learn together, share spaces and, most impor- tantly, ideas.

We are very excited to bring a Shlicha, an Israeli emissary, to our schools - a young and vibrant Israeli teacher who will be teaching at both schools as well as becoming part of the Youth Engagement program.

Making friends, making connections at this age may not be typical, but it happened, right here, at Temple Beth Am.

May you have opportunities to expand your social capital and meet new and amazing people like I did this year!

I participated in international events like March of the Living, Jewish leadership training programs, ROI summit, JDC Congress, Jewish summer camps, and Maccabi games. I volunteered with Masa and stayed in Israel for six months doing social work. A few years later I made aliya with my family. I didn’t feel like a stranger; I didn’t feel like an immigrant. I felt at home again, a proud Jew living in a Jewish country.

Fast forward, life brought me to Miami and Temple Beth Am, a Jewish home for my family. My two children are Day School students, and since we became members, my involvement in temple’s Jewish life has grown more and more. I became a Board-Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst and worked with children, teens and adults with special needs. These skills,

Programming was going to be different, so I took on new roles and responsibilities, including the production of this Commentator. I learned new skill sets, like how to be a television producer (I like to think of myself as Roz from Frasier), and how to run the Annual Auction. I learned best practices for Zoom programming, like how to respond to the shift in structure and attention spans, what are the most effective ways to incorporate breakout rooms and screen sharing, how to engage people using the chat feature, and, of course, how to troubleshoot when the technology goes awry! TEMPLE BETH AM’S Recovery Through a Jewish Lens

Recovery Through A Jewish Lens is Temple Beth Am’s response of support to those in recovery from addiction, their families and allies. It is the way we work to end the stigma of addiction so Jews can feel welcome, accepted, supported and cared for by their Temple community. Jews who are suffering because of addiction have a spiritual home at Temple Beth Am through a monthly peer support group, education for teens and adults, and clean and sober holiday celebrations. You and those you love can live the blessings of recovery in a Jewish context without the fear of isolation or stigma. Listen to the words of our participants:

These walls have witnessed many generations of children growing up, so many teachers educating our students, so many events, so much love.

These walls have witnessed laughter, tears, joy and sadness, friendships formed, friendships broken and repaired, emotions expressed without holding back.

These walls have witnessed recess, basketball games, hula hoop competitions, races, sports competitions, and fun.

Within these walls our children have learned to read, to write, to apply mathematics to their life, to think. They have conducted science experiments and once or twice, have fallen asleep in class.

These are the walls of learning!

As we prepare to say goodbye to our beloved campus, we needed to find a way to express our love and gratitude to the walls of our school.

On Yom HaAtzmaut we decided to put our love and ourselves into these walls and let them know that we will not forget them.

While we will move onto a new and brighter campus, we will always remember the old campus. And with the old campus, we will forever be grateful to those people who built it with love and dedication.

As we read the words on the wall, we see expressions like:

We Love TBAM Am Israel Chai Proud to be a Jew

These statements say what our founders meant for us to feel - gratitude, love and connection with our Judaism and our school and Temple. Our names on the walls represent our deep personal connection with TBAM Day School.

When the walls of the campus go down…they will not take our feelings with them, as the feelings and gratitude for TBAM Day School are imprinted in our hearts and memories forever.

BETH AM GARDEN As the school year comes to an end, the TBAM Garden Sanctuary will begin preparations for a Summer respite. Since construction in March, we have enjoyed our fair share of successes and failures. Success has been the joy on the school children’s faces and overcoming the occasional reluctance to get their hands dirty, a bumper crop of herbs, lettuces, cabbages, tomatoes, and beets, the wonderful partnership with Fairchild Tropical Garden planting a native Pine Rockland habitat for an array of butterflies, first tasting mulberries, loquats and Strawberry Tree fruit, and seeing three generations of school families and congregants coming together with our Clergy. Failures… well, the iguanas did a number on our plants and beds… the Tomato Hornworm feasted as well. Weeds are never fun, and we have to dial in our irrigation system. That’s garden life, though. It takes many seasons to flourish, and flourish it will, with the continued support of the Day School and temple parents, administration, staff and volunteers. We look forward to the Fall and urge those who have been involved to stay involved, and for those who have not, to join the garden community. Please reach out to [email protected] if you would like to volunteer your time and talent. — YEAR IN REVIEW — Another year comes to a close, and what a year it was! When asked who he’d like in Israel to Kehilat Har-El, Jerusalem present him the honorary doctorate, he informed the university leadership that he’d like to invite Rabbi Zavidov to do so as his spiritual advisor! The university was more than happy to accede to his request, despite the fact that a) Rabbi Zavidov is a graduate of Hebrew University, and more striking: b) she’s a Reform rabbi and Bar-Ilan University is formally an Orthodox university. This particular summer will be somewhat different with many of us choosing to travel with caution, if at all. Concert going is a maybe if the venues are small; so much has changed in the way we approach the activities that we love to share with friends and family. Sisterhood has tried all year to keep us connected and engaged and we’ll be working this summer to continue to offer the dynamic programming that we did this past year. Our Movie Club will continue through the summer with a discussion this month and in August. Hopefully, we will be offering some other programming in August as well. Please stay tuned. Look for our brochure in your temple membership packet or feel free to join online for next year at tbam.org/joinsisterhood. I wish you all a wonderful summer!

DILIA GROSSMAN, Sisterhood President Sisterhood Movie Club MONDAY, JUNE 21ST at 7:00 PM Join us for our next movie club as we discuss The Wife, starring Glenn Close, Jonathan Pryce, Max Irons and Christian Slater. In this Academy Award nominated film, a wife questions her life choices as she travels to Stockholm to see her husband with the Nobel Prize. Don’t miss this engaging conversation; movie snacks encouraged! MONDAY, AUGUST 23RD at 7:00 PM The featured movie we are discussing is The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020), written and directed by Aaron Sorkin and based on actual events. The film follows the trial stemming from various charges surrounding the uprising at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. When first envisioned, the protest accompanying the convention was intended to be a peaceful protest of the war, until a riot broke out between protesters and the police. It stars Eddie Redmayne, Alex Sharp, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jeremy Strong, Mark Rylance and Joseph Gordon Levitt. Etta Gold will lead the discussion. Nominated for several Academy Awards, including a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Sacha Baron Cohen as Abbie Hoffman, and is available to stream on Netflix. RSVP for both films at tbam.org/movieclub NEXT BOARD MEETING Wednesday, June 2 at 7:00 pm via Zoom. Everyone is welcome. Email Dilia at [email protected] if you’d like to attend! By Dr. Lenore C. Kipper, RJE, Judaic Studies Director, Emerita Enduring Wisdom from the Pirkei Avot This year the focus has been on selections from Pirke Avot. Many times, the made reference to other sources of Jewish wisdom, especially from the book of Proverbs. Jewish tradition considered King Solomon the author of this collection of wisdom, however, it may be that there were wise sages who began to write the sayings during his forty-year reign, and it became the foundation for those who followed and edited the whole Bible, the Tanach.

The book of Proverbs answers some of the most difficult and important questions: How shall a person practice and observe the values of Judaism in his daily activities at home, at school, and in the marketplace? How shall one fulfill the duties and responsibilities towards children, parents, and neighbors? How shall a person overcome the temptations found in everyday life? The wise sages of Israel believed that wisdom came from the Eternal One, to help us choose between right and wrong conduct. They wrote their ideals and principles of righteous conduct in the form of proverbs. In their wise sayings they used humor and criticism. They liked to contrast the foolish, the rich and the poor, the lazy and the diligent. They condemned pride, anger, envy, hatred, selfishness and greed. They praised trust in God, honoring parents, guarding one’s tongue, charity, honesty and good character. Attaining wisdom leads to people who develop positive relationships between parents, children and neighbors, and who are responsible members of a community.

Selections from Proverbs hast to do evil, and the person who sows discord among brothers. (or all people)” (6.16-19) Living Together with Family and Friends: “Train up a child in the way he/she should go, and even when one “To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Eternal is old, he/she will not depart from it.” (22.6) One, than sacrifice (or prayer).” (21.3) “Hear my son, the instruction of your father, an “Righteousness exalts a nation, but evil is a reproach to any d forsake not the teaching of your mother; they shall be a crown of people.” (14.34) grace for your head, and a necklace about your neck.” (1,8,9) “Through wisdom is a home built, and by understanding it Mishlei: A Modern Commentary on Proverbs is established; and by knowledge are its chambers filled with I recommend this book, written by Rabbi Leonard S. Kravitz precious and pleasant riches.” (24,3,4) and Rabbi Kerry M. Olitzky. I had the privilege of studying “Withhold not help from the needy when it is in your power to with both of them at different times. The book goes through give it. Say not to your neighbor, ‘go and come again, tomorrow the thirty-one chapters of Proverbs, with a commentary on each I will give’; Plan no mischief against your neighbor, when he lives proverb. The authors used traditional commentaries: Rashi, in confidence beside you.” (3.27-29) Abraham ibn Ezra, and Gersonides. In addition, they provide “There are friends who play at friendship; but there is a friend who modern writings on the themes of each chapter. sticks closer than a brother (or sister)” (18,24) The book of Proverbs provides us with thoughtful knowledge, The Good Citizen: wisdom and everyday experiences. I believe you will find many “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: they who are fond quotes that can be applied to the times in which we live. I did. of using it shall eat its fruit.” (18.21) So, my assignment for the summer is to open up your Bible, in “One who is slow to anger is better than a warrior; and the one the section called the Writings, find the book of Proverbs, and who rules his temper, than the one who takes a city.” (16.32) consider finding the ones that are most meaningful for you. The “A soft answer turns away wrath; but a harsh word stirs up authors conclude their introduction with these words: anger.” (15.1) Each reader brings him or herself into the reading of the text. “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” In so doing, each individual reflects his or her own concerns (16.18) and ideas about the world. A text lives because the readers can “Hatred stirs up strife; but love covers all transgressions.” (10.12) find meaning in it, as well as bring meaning to it. “Better a morsel of dry bread and peace with it, than a house full of feasting with strife.” (17.1) Enjoy the summer; continue to learn! “A merry heart is a healing medicine; but a broken spirit dries up the bones.” (17.22) L’shalom, What Delight the Eternal One: “There are six things the Eternal One hates, yes seven which are detestable: haughty eyes and a lying tongue, hands that shed Lenore innocent blood, a mind that plans wicked schemes, feet that make ARE YOU A PELOTON OWNER OR USER OF THE PELOTON APP?

Temple Beth Am section at Lakeside Memorial Gardens

Dear Beth Am Member,

Many of you have purchased pre-need gravesites at Lakeside. Our inventory is quickly being depleted and we will soon have a new Beth Am section at Lakeside.

The new gravesites may be marked with either a monument or a memorial plaque. This is a wonderful, one-time opportunity for our community. Making a pre-need investment of this sort is a wise decision for you and a comfort to your extended family. If you were to purchase these graves on your own, they could cost thousands more. We see this as a way to give you and your family some peace of mind and at the same time, help the Temple.

If you are interested in purchasing a plot or any number therein, please contact Mindy Robbin at 786.364.9446 or [email protected].

INTRODUCING… The Marilyn Herskowitz Jewish Education Fund The Marilyn Herskowitz Jewish Education Fund was recently created in loving memory of and in honor of Marilyn Kornstein Herskowitz, by the Herskowitz family. The fund was created to support the following areas of need for our Temple Beth Am youth: Jewish Summer Camp Scholarships, High School in Israel Program Scholarships or other Israel Teen Programs, and Jewish educational programs outside of school. Marilyn taught her family the importance of tradition, of community and tzedakah, of faith and love, of education, and of the significance of Israel to the Jewish people. The Herskowitz family feels blessed to be able to create this new fund and give in this way to Jewish children who can appreciate and love Israel and Judaism the way Marilyn always did.

To contribute to this fund, you may visit www.tbam.org/giving/thank-you-for-your-donation

“I wonder what Grandma is doing at The Palace tonight?”

Grandkids can’t wait to see what will happen when they visit The Palace. One thing they know for sure is that Grandma won’t be sitting alone in her room in front of the TV with nothing to do. The Palace has been honored as America’s #1 senior community for its social calendar and activities. Best of all, with so much to do, the whole family is invited to join us. And they do!
