So I found myself with a major split between biology and geology. —Van Houten to Sheldon Judson (10/25/1990) Franklyn Bosworth Van Houten (1914–2010), sedimentologist, teacher, and the chairman of my dissertation committee at Princeton University, recently left us for red beds on Mars or perhaps it was to oolitic ironstone in northeastern Colombia. Van lived through most of the twentieth century and he made a strong start on the twenty-first century. Not long before he passed on at the age of 96, we talked on the telephone, and he asked about my research, my life and family, as he had done for almost half a century. He was always a friend. Early in my first month at Princeton, Harry Hammond Hess (1906–1969), then chairman of the Department of Geosciences, suggested a thesis topic. It evolved into an effort to correlate normal and reversed paleomagnetic events in the Triassic Chugwater Formation (now a Group) of west-central Wyoming. Harry believed many geophysicists that were publishing on reversals of Earth’s magnetic field didn’t have a firm grasp of the geological foundation of such fluctuations. Franklyn B. Van Houten, a red-bed enthusiast and specialist, soon became my principal supervisor, joined later by Bob Hargraves (1928–2003), a first-rate petrologist from South Africa.

Kelly Research Associate, Vertebrate Paleontology Section, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, 900 Exposition Blvd, Los Angeles, California 90007 ABSTRACT A large number of isolated rodent teeth have been recently recovered from the Duchesnean (middle Eocene) Simi Valley Landfill Local Fauna of the Sespe Formation during a paleontologic mitigation program at the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center, Ventura County, California. Included in these teeth are new samples of Metanoiamys korthi, Paradjidaumo reynoldsi, Simiacritomys whistleri, and Simimys landeri. The discovery of upper and putative lower premolars of Simiacritomys whistleri supports it’s referral to Eomyidae. New occurrences for the Simi Valley Landfill Local Fauna include Eomyidae (one or more species of uncertain affinities) and Pareumys sp. Kelly ABSTRACT The Turtle Bluff Member (TBM) of the Bridger Formation in southwestern Wyo- ming, formerly known as the Bridger E, is designated as the stratotype section for the earliest Uintan or biochron Ui1a of the Uintan North American Land Mammal age. The TBM overlies the Twin Buttes Member of the Bridger Formation, upon which the Twin- buttean Subage or biochron Br3 of the Bridgerian North American Land Mammal age is characterized. For over a century, the TBM yielded only a few fragmentary speci- mens, but extensive field work over the last 23 years has resulted in the discovery of numerous mammal fossils from the member, which provides an unprecedented oppor- tunity to better define this poorly known interval. This is the second in a series of three papers that provide detailed descriptions and taxonomic revisions of the fauna from the TBM. Here we document the occurrence of the following taxa from the TBM: Apatemys bellulus; Apatemys rodens; Scenopagus priscus; Scenopagus curtidens; Sespedecti- nae, genus undetermined; Entomolestes westgatei new species; Centetodon bemi- cophagus; Centetodon pulcher; Nyctitherium gunnelli new species; Nyctitherium velox; Pontifactor bestiola; an unnamed oligoryctid; an unnamed lipotyphlan; Viverravus grac- ilis; Hyopsodus lepidus; Uintatherium anceps; Wickia sp., cf. W. brevirhinus; Triplopus sp., cf. T. obliquidens; Epihippus sp., cf. E. gracilis; Homacodon sp., cf. H. vagans; and Merycobunodon? walshi new species. A greater understanding of the faunal composi- tion of the TBM allows a better characterization of the beginning of the Uintan and fur- ther clarifies the Bridgerian-Uintan transition.

    Paleobiology, 31(2), 2005, pp. 324±346 To replace or not to replace: the signi®cance of reduced functional tooth replacement in marsupial and placental mammals Alexander F. H. van Nievelt and Kathleen K. Smith Abstract.ÐMarsupial mammals are characterized by a pattern of dental replacement thought to be unique. The apparent primitive therian pattern is two functional generations of teeth at the incisor, canine, and premolar loci, and a series of molar teeth, which by de®nition are never replaced. In marsupials, the incisor, canine, and ®rst and second premolar positions possess only a single func- tional generation. Recently this pattern of dental development has been hypothesized to be a syn- apomorphy of metatherians, and has been used to diagnose taxa in the fossil record. Further, the suppression of the ®rst generation of teeth has been linked to the marsupial mode of reproduction, through the mechanical suppression of odontogenesis during the period of ®xation of marsupials, and has been used to reconstruct the mode of reproduction of fossil organisms. Here we show that dental development occurs throughout the period of ®xation; therefore, the hypothesis that odon- togenesis is mechanically suppressed during this period is refuted. Further, we present compar- ative data on dental replacement in eutherians and demonstrate that suppression of tooth replace- ment is fairly common in diverse groups of placental mammals. We conclude that reproductive mode is neither a necessary nor a suf®cient explanation for the loss of tooth replacement in mar- supials. We explore possible alternative explanations for the loss of replacement in therians, but we argue that no single hypothesis is adequate to explain the full range of observed patterns.

Previously unknown elements of the 'upper dentition of C. pulcher are described along with a reconstruction of the lower antemolar teeth. C. pulcher, Batodon and Batodonoides appear to be the most primitive known geolabidids, and the family seems most closely related to palaeoryctids. INTRODUCTION Small insectivores of the Family Geolabididae are poorly represented in most collections of Eocene mammals. Ongoing collecting by the junior author in the Bridger Formation has yielded a modest sample that in- creases our knowledge of the dental anatomy and evolution of the genus Centetodon. The systematics of Centetodon is currently being revised (Lillegraven and McKenna, MS). Reference to this work was published elsewhere (Krishtalka and Setoguchi, 1977), including an informal designation of new species named in Lillegraven and McKenna's manuscript that will likewise be used here. Lillegraven and McKenna recognize three Eocene species of Centetodon: C. pulcher Marsh, 1872 and Centetodon sp. B (new) occur in Bridgerian deposits, whereas, Centetodon sp. While initially controversial, interest in species selection has been revived by the accumulation of evidence of widespread trait-dependent diversication. In my the- sis, I developed and applied a number of new likelihood-based methods for investigat- ing species selection by detecting the association between species traits and speciation or extinction rates. ese methods are explicitly phylogenetic and incorporate simple, but commonly used, models of speciation, extinction, and trait evolution; I assume throughout that speciation and extinction can be modelled as a birth-death process where rates depend in some way on one or more traits, and that these traits evolve under a Markov process. In particular, I extended the BiSSE (Binary State Speciation and Extinction) method to allow use with incompletely resolved phylogenies, and de- veloped analogous methods for multi-state discrete traits or combinations of binary traits (MuSSE; Multi-State Speciation and Extinction) and quantitative traits (QuaSSE; Quantitative State Speciation and Extinction). I tested the statistical performance of the methods using simulations, investigating their performance with variation in tree size, degree of resolution, number of traits, and departure from the true model.
