REVELATION How to Use This Study Guide

How to Use This Study Guide

Prayer - Begin each lesson with prayer, asking God to teach you through the Scriptures and to open your heart, mind and soul to receive from the content of the lessons.

Scripture – Have a copy of your handy. We recommend the New American Standard Bible, or another literal translation, rather than a paraphrase. During each lesson, you’ll be prompted to read relevant passages of Scripture and answer questions related to the lesson.

Questions – As you approach questions, take the time to answer thoughtfully and honestly, using wisdom and creativity. Not every question will apply to each person all the time. If you can’t answer a question, jot down your thoughts and concerns and continue on in the lesson. Use the questions as a guide in your thinking rather than rigid forms to complete.

Special Study Guide Features WHAT DOES IT SAY? - Provides a brief summary of the content to be discussed in each lesson. The purpose of this section will highlight the main idea of the lesson.

FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTOR - This section serves to create interaction with the teacher and promote class participation. It includes the facilitator’s lesson plan that mirrors a PowerPoint presentation used during class.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ME? - Focuses on What Does It Mean To Me? to help you put in perspective the principles learned in the lesson, that can be practiced in ways that fit your personality, gifts, and level of spiritual maturity.

QUESTIONS TO PONDER - These questions are designed to make you think and ponder the principles and the main point of a topic. The question may require you to record answers after prayer and meditation. This question may also serve as a point of discussion in class.

DIGGING DEEPER - Some passages of Scripture may in fact have a deeper theological meaning that could relate to modern worldviews and philosophies. This feature will aide with gaining a deeper understanding of theological issues related to the text. At times English words will be translated to Greek and Hebrew to gather more insight into the text.

ENTRANCE TO HISTORY - Sometimes we can lose track of the timeline when studying various portions of Scripture. This feature will allow us to get back on track by exploring the history of the original settings, which may include; customs, culture, and geography in which Revelation was written.

REVELATION Course Overview

Fall Semester Course Overview

n the spring semester, we studied the Seven Churches of Minor. These weren’t just ordinary churches, I these churches were special for three reasons: First: The seven churches were actual places of worship that existed in Asia Minor during the first century. Second: The seven churches referenced in :11 represented the characteristics and types of churches throughout church history.

Third: The Seven 1st Century Churches were symbolic of specific periods that would exist chronologically in church history. s we come to the next section of our study, we now encounter the event that believers have been waiting Afor since the church age began… the Rapture of the Church! This is the event when will gather believers of the entire Church Age, living and dead, to be with Him in glory forever. We will see Christ taking His church into and all the beautiful wonder that we will encounter once we are finally in the presence of the Lord unhindered by sin.

While we will be with our Lord in the air, there will be quite another scene taking place on the Earth. The exit of the Church marks the end of the Grace Age and the beginning of the most horrific time that world has ever seen…. The Tribulation Period. While we will study this period in detail, the keys to remember for now are that this period is marked with cataclysmic disasters, unimaginable suffering, and widespread death. All the judgments are a result of the curse of sin and man’s unrepented heart.

Even amid all the calamity and chaos, God still shows His love and mercy toward man in the ministry work that He continues to have ongoing, even during this terrible period.

The goal for our Fall Connect Bible Study… students will be able to:

• Identify the timing of the Rapture in reference to the Tribulation Period. • Get a glimpse into the glories of Heaven and the activities that will take place there. • See who initiates the Tribulation Period and why. • Understand key figures and key events for the first half of the Tribulation period. While we unlock this first half of the tribulation period, allow the Scriptures to speak to your heart and give you a strong burden for the lost, understanding that if they don’t make the right choice, The Tribulation and Eternal judgment are their future!

Spring Semester Course Review

When you come to the last book of the Bible, you are opened to an amazing world that is full of imagery and symbolism. We see battle scenes of cataclysmic cosmic proportions with weird creatures that boggle your mind. The descriptions of plagues that will intrude the earth will render pain and suffering that does not compare to the times as we know it. But, what’s so intriguing about this book is that it is not fictional like the novel, “The Lord of The Rings” or the many Sci-Fi books and movies we read and watch today. This book is inspired… it is prophesy; it is God’s message to His people concerning the future. The is a divinely inspired drama of good, surrounded by evil… until finally The King of Kings appears and leads the conquest to ultimate victory. It reveals to us that King already has victory over death, hell and the grave, and in the end everyone will acknowledge that He is The LORD of LORDs. This book is not fantasy; it is reality… it is not fiction… it is truth. This is the Revelation of Jesus Christ.

THREE PRACTICAL THINGS TO REMEMBER:

I. Expect the Unusual • The and the Epistles don’t compare to the language of Revelation… • Deliberately written in symbols and cryptic figures of speech to hide the message from persecutors (i.e. Domitian the Emperor). • There will be parts you will not understand (welcome to the club).

II. Restrain Your Imagination • Allow the Scripture to say what it says… • For instance, the word ‘like’ or ‘as’ will be used to vividly describe something… i.e. Revelation 1:15 “…His feet were like burnished bronze… His voice was like the sound of many waters…” This does not mean His feet were bronze, they appeared that way because of the blazing glory of God. His voice was not like Niagara Falls… it means His voice was powerful, with authority and the volume was thunderous. • We will not predict when future events will occur, we will restrain from foretelling the identity of the Anti-Christ.

III. Always Ask Three Questions

1. What Does it Say? This is a question of OBSERVATION

2. What Does it Mean? This is a question of INTERPRETATION

3. What Does it Mean to Me? This is a question of APPLICATION

REVELATION The Beginning of Tribulation

WHAT DOES IT SAY?

n our study of the seven churches, we observed an overall pattern used by the Lord to communicate His Imessage to each church. We noticed several similarities. Each one includes an opening address to the messenger (“angel”) of each church, an initial identification of Christ, then the content of the message (what Christ knows) about the church (commendation, concern, correction, counsel), and finally a call to action for those who have ears “to hear what the Spirit says to the churches” (:7).

Common Elements of Each Message

To “To the messenger of the church in…” From “Thus says…” Contents “I know…” Commendation “You have this going for you…” Concern “I have this against you…” Correction “Repent! But if you don’t…” Counsel “To the one who overcomes…” For “He who has ears to hear…”

Although the Lord used this general guideline for each letter, observe the uniqueness in the comparison and contrast of each individual report card.

FIRST: There are strengths and weaknesses of each church except, the letter to Laodicea, which receives only concerns, correction, and counsel.

SECOND: All of the letters include rebukes, except for Smyrna and Philadelphia.

THIRD: Each letter has some remarkably relevant What Does It Mean To Me questions for churches and even for individual Christians today.

Revelation 4:1-2: The Rapture

WHAT DOES IT SAY?

hapter 4 opens with John the Apostle being taken up into Heaven. To understand the significance of this we must first understand that there are three : C 1. The First Heaven is the air and atmosphere that we see and breathe every day. 2. The Second Heaven is outer space, the galaxies, and universe. 3. The Third Heaven is where God resides… it is His home and where His throne is.

It is the Third Heaven that we see here…in all of its glorious beauty and splendor. John’s presence in heaven is significant for several other reasons as well:

• John the Apostle represents the church, which goes to show that one day the church herself will be in Heaven. • John is “taken up” into Heaven before the events of the Tribulation, which is another indication of a Pretribulation rapture. • The is the focal point of the scene with all its majesty and worship is a continual practice as demonstrated by the entirety of angelic beings and .

The “taking away” that John experiences again is called the Rapture. This is the snatching away of the church. It is the Blessed Hope of all believers and the first phase of Christ’s . Here the Lord gathers all the Church Age believers, both living and dead, in the air to be with Him forever. It is the event that leads all believers to both the Judgment Seat of Christ and the Marriage Feast of the Lamb, which we will see, later in the book.

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

“In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.” (2 Corinthians 2:13)

Theme Scripture: “Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter.” (Revelation 1:19)

In the previous Connect session, we covered ”the things which thou hast seen (John’s vision) and the things which are (message to the 7 churches-commendations, concerns, counsel).” Our focus for this and the next session will be on “the things which shall be hereafter.”

(Revelation timeline: the next major event for the church will be the rapture!)

I. The Rapture

Revelation 4: 1 “After this I looked, and behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew the things which must be hereafter.

“After this”, the “first voice”, and the “trumpet” refers back to Revelation 1:10, 11, 19.

Revelation 4:2 “And immediately I was in the Spirit: and, behold a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.

The “throne” is a symbol of ______and ______. That the throne is set in heaven denotes the sovereignty, absolute power and control over all things in heaven and in earth.

The one seated on the throne is ______.

Page 21

Revelation 4:3–11: The Throne Room

WHAT DOES IT SAY?

hapter 4 continues with these nine verses in Revelation which gives us a brief insight of what heaven is like. John’s description shows us just the beginning of this vast place we could never comprehend. C This initial peek will serve to set the proper tone for this passage and the remainder of the book of Revelation. Know this… heaven is not about where we are going when we die, what size dwelling we will have, or who we will see when we get there. Heaven is all about God. Understanding this fact should change our perspective regarding heaven itself, and it should change our lives.

Revelation 4:3 “And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.”

I. Who is He that Sits on the Throne?

A. To look upon Him was like looking at the brilliance of a gemstone, like a jasper and a sardine (sardius) stone.

• There are many facets in a gemstone (the many sides of God).

• The breastplate of the Ephod represents ______, and the stones in the breastplate represent the______. Exodus 28: 17,20; 39:10-14

• All judgment will be given to the Son. (John 5:22-23)

• Sardius was the first stone. ( was Israel’s first born, It means “Behold a son”)

• Jasper was the last stone. ( was the last child born of Rachel. It means “Son of my right hand”)

NOTES:

Page 29

REVELATION The Beginning of Tribulation

B. Notice the reversal of the order in Revelation. Jasper is listed first, Sardius last.

• In Matthew 20:16, Jesus’ parable about the workers said the first shall be last.

o Some scholars say that the looks forward to Christ (the ______), while the looks back at Calvary (______of the promise).

• In 46: 9-10, God makes the declaration: “I am God…Declaring the end from the beginning…” (the last and the first)

• In Isaiah 41:4; 44:6; and 48:12, Jehovah says He is the First and the Last.

o This shows Jehovah God pointing to Jesus, who is His ______and Glory.

• In Revelation 1:8, 11, 17-18, Jesus says He is the First and the Last.

o This confirms the deity of Jesus—He has the same ______as the Father.

C. Rainbow …, like unto an emerald. (Exodus 28:18)

• The rainbow is green like an emerald. The fourth stone in the breastplate is an emerald (represents –______). This signifies the praise surrounding the throne of God. • The rainbow also goes back to God’s covenant with Noah in Genesis 8:20-21; 9:11- 17. Notice the rainbow didn’t appear until after Noah offered a ______unto God. • God’s covenant is forever. This may also represent a picture of the church in heaven after the rapture. It is only because of Christ’s ______that we are forever present with the Lord.

Revelation 4:4 “And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads a crown of gold.”

Page 30

THE THRONE ROOM Chapter 4:3-11

II. Who are the 24 Elders? (Rev. 21:12-14)

A. What is the significance of the white raiment (clothing) and the crowns of gold?

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ME?

The Apostle John’s ascent into the throne room of God is a declaration that it is all about God… His perspective… His plan… and His purpose. All glory and honor, praise and worship must be directed to Him and Him only. If we do not grasp this truth, then the Throne Room in heaven should have remained locked and emptied. How about you, have you enthroned God at the center of your life?1

How would you feel, if you suddenly received a vision like John? What would you do?

Using Revelation 4, describe appropriate attitudes and actions before the throne of God.

List some things in your life that you value. Read James 4:13-15. List ways you can put God’s will first in your daily life, including your future plans. Are you able to cast the things you value and your plans at the feet of Christ?

The highest form of worship is obedience. What should you begin to do, to focus your attention on God as your only object of worship?

A legitimate prayer is to ask the Lord to teach you to genuinely worship Him above all things. So, the next time you are in corporate worship, what should you stop doing that distracts you from your focus on God?

Revelation 5:1-14: Worthy is the Lamb

WHAT DOES IT SAY?

hapter 5 continues the scene in Heaven. At this point, the emphasis shifts to the seven-sealed scroll. There are three important details about this scroll, which will be explored deeper in the lesson: C 1. It is in the right hand of God the Father. 2. It has writing on both sides. 3. It has seals on it.

The scroll represents the Mortgage to the Earth. In the Old Testament, two types of things could be “redeemed…” people and possessions. The Lord Jesus Christ came to restore all things. Seeing that He has already redeemed the people, it is now time to turn His attention to the redemption of the possession.

In this chapter the scene is the Throne Room in Heaven. The Apostle John is in the Spirit and he is overwhelmed with the worship of Him who sat on the throne. While gazing at the glorious worship, he notices a scroll in the right hand of He who sat on the throne. This scroll is like none other. It is written on both sides and sealed with . What’s that all about? Suddenly, a question is raised by a very strong angel: Who is worthy to open and read the scroll? When none steps forward, John begins to weep bitterly. One of the worshippers encourages him that there is one worthy. John notices a lamb that was slain but standing in the midst of He who sat on the throne, the Four living Creatures and the 24 Elders. He later notices the Lion of Judah.

The worship intensifies for there is one found worthy; But why is this slain Lamb worthy? Who is He? What’s the connection between the Lion and the Lamb? How does this scene relate to End Time events? We will examine these questions to gain insight into the mysteries the Holy Spirit is unlocking for John through this vision regarding End Time events.

THE SEVEN SEALS Chapter 6:1-17

Revelation 6:1-17: The 7 Seals WHAT DOES IT SAY?

hapter 6 begins to deal with the subject that occupies the majority of the Book of Revelation…The Tribulation Period. This is a horrific period at the conclusion of the Church Age. Known as The Time of CJacob’s Trouble, The Seventieth Week of Daniel, and , it is a seven-year period marked by intense darkness, desolation, and distress. It is a period of three consecutive sets of judgments known as the Seven Seals, , and . During this time, God brings intense judgment upon the earth as has never been seen. While God is punishing unbelieving Gentiles, He is also purging unbelieving Jews making them ready for Christ’s Glorious Appearing at the conclusion of the period.

The period opens with the Seven Seals. In ancient times, seals were used to close up and secure a scroll. Hot wax was used to actually close the scroll and then a signet ring was pressed into the wax to form a mark. The seal was used to assure that the document was not opened until it reached the destination to which it was sent. These seals set the tone for the trouble that will follow for the entire period. With the What Does It Say? of the Anti-Christ, followed by war, famine, death, persecution and natural disasters, God’s judgment upon unrepentant man is unimaginable. The seals covering the first 21 months are of such devastation, a fourth of the world’s population will die as a result.

REVELATION The Beginning of Tribulation

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ME?

Coming to terms with God’s judgment is difficult, especially in our world today. We want to emphasize the love, grace, and mercy of God and ignore the anger, wrath, and judgment of God. Those who claim to be “spiritual” rather than “religious” seek a god who gushes with affirmation, encourages freedom of self- expression, and winks at our daily mistakes. That type of god, created in our own image, is nothing like the God of the Bible, as we can clearly see in the book of Revelation.2

First, how does a believer in Jesus Christ come to terms with God’s judgment? We give Him praise for delivering us from it. He promised to deliver believers from the coming wrath, so we must take His prophecies of future judgments seriously, but we should not fear them.

The following Scripture verses are promises from God that believers will be delivered from the coming wrath. Commit to memory and thank God that He will deliver us from wrath through Jesus Christ our LORD.

Romans 5:9 (NASB) 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.

1 Thessalonians 1:10 (NASB) 10 and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come.

1 Thessalonians 5:9 (NASB) 9 For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

Second, believers must urge others to trust Christ. So that they, too, will escape the coming wrath. It’s the same concept as an imminent hurricane, and the meteorologist warns everyone who is in the path of danger, so they can avoid it.

Whom do you need to begin praying for regarding their eternal salvation? Besides prayer, what else can you do to share Christ with these people?

THE SEVEN SEALS Chapter 6:1-17

In your own words, list at least three purposes for God’s future judgments. 1. ______2. ______3. ______

The one question we must ask ourselves from this lesson in chapter 6 is, “Who is able to stand?” Ever since that day Adam and Eve rebelled in the Garden, because of sin, humans have hidden from the presence of God. However, when the period of God’s wrath begins, none of the guilty will be able to hide from the judgments of God. Their peace and security will vanish; no food, valueless money, irrelevant possessions. The only looming activity will be physical survival.

Who will be “able to stand?”

If the events of Revelation were to begin today, would you be prepared? Why, or why not?

Just like the people who will become believers and endure during the Great Tribulation, God will provide the same kind of spiritual strength for us to endure our own present trials and struggles against sin, Satan, and the world.

Using the following passages, summarize the practical steps we should take to become “able to stand” through our own struggles.

THE INTERLUDE Chapter 7:1-17

Revelation 7:1-17: The Interlude

WHAT DOES IT SAY?

hapter 7 discusses a subject that has caused much debate in confusion in biblical circles, but is simplistic C in its explanation. Here we are referring to the 144,000 servants of God. This section forms what is called a parenthetical or interval section.

While the Tribulation Period is a time of great stress and punishment, God, in His infinite love and mercy, is still after the hearts of men. Even while the chaotic events are taking place, the Lord seals and uses 144,000 Jewish Witnesses to spread the Gospel of the Kingdom throughout the world during this period. This ministry takes place during the first half of the Tribulation Period, as we will see as we go deeper into the chapter.

While we cannot be dogmatic, it is possible that the crusade launched during this period will be the largest soul winning harvest of all time for the following reasons:

1. The aftermath of the Rapture 2. The spirit fullness of the witnesses 3. The chaotic world conditions 4. The largest world population

The evidence of the success of the crusade is seen in the innumerable amount of people that are referred to in the chapter because of these efforts. This again goes to show that God’s love and mercy are indescribable and that no matter what the world conditions may be, as we have seen throughout the whole of Scripture, the Lord will never be without a witness.

Page 54

THE INTERLUDE Chapter 7:1-17

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ME?

n the middle of the intense judgments of Revelation 6 and following, God granted John an interlude of Imercy in Revelation 7. In chapter seven we witness the salvation of people from every tribe and catch a glimpse of the final fulfillment of God’s promise to the nation of Israel. The stage is now set for Revelation chapter 8, but first let’s ponder some practical principles to apply.

First, the interlude in Revelation 7 reaffirms Christ’s central position. The chaos of this fallen world should drive us to find peace and rest in Jesus Christ. He is our Shepherd, and He will provide comfort and provision in our times of need (Revelation 7:16-17).

Not including your relationship with Christ, list four other top priorities in your life.

1. My relationship with Christ 2. 3. 4. 5.

Of these five priorities, which do you feel is paramount in your life?

As you reflect on your daily schedule, which of these priorities takes up most of your time? Why?

Second, the interlude in Revelation 7 reminds us of what is important. As human beings, we are prone to lose focus of the real priorities in life, especially during trials and temptations. Intentionally reflecting on what’s really important, will help us remain calm and focused even in the midst of struggles.

Page 55

REVELATION The Beginning of Tribulation

Do you need an interlude from the daily stress of life? Consider taking a weekend getaway. Use this time to reflect and pray and think through your priorities, along with where is Christ on the priority list? Record below your idea for a retreat, and then take steps to make it happen.

Third, the interlude in Revelation 7 reminds us why life is worthwhile. This interlude provides a pause in God’s judgments to remember His mercy- specifically the mercy He shows to Israel, the people of promise. Ultimately, this passage should remind us that God keeps all of His promises, which includes us.

Which of God’s promises have you had difficulty trusting?

Write a prayer confessing your faith in Him and declaring your trust in His promises. Be specific.

Revelation 7 reminds us that God keeps His promises to His people through the person of Jesus Christ our Lord. An interlude will equip us to step out into the battle with a new sense of purpose and meaning as we place our trust in Him.

THE 7 TRUMPETS Chapter 8:1-9:21

Revelation 8:1-9:21: The 7 Trumpets

WHAT DOES IT SAY?

hapters 8 and 9 turn our focus back to the C destruction that is taking place on the earth with the introduction of the Seven Trumpet Judgments. Again, in ancient times, trumpets were used to signal special announcements or major events. The awesomeness of these events is evident in the fact that there was silence in Heaven for 30 minutes before the first trumpet was even blown.

As we have seen and will continue to see throughout the book, these judgments are all administered by special angels, who move between Heaven and earth, clearly demonstrating and indicating that all of these judgments are from the hand of the Lord.

Many of the Trumpets are like judgments seen early in the Old Testament, with examples being the Ten Plagues of Egypt. However, in Revelation, the judgments occur with a far greater magnitude, intensity, and scope also being worldwide instead of localized as is earlier in Scripture.

The final three Trumpets are of such a nature that they are referred to as Woes. In total, the Trumpets cover the second 21 months of the period and are of such devastation, that another 1/3 of the world’s population are killed reducing the total of the world’s population by approximately ½ by the midpoint of this period.

In your spare time check out the YouTube video “Loud Trumpet Sounds Heard Around the Globe in 2018 – 2019” https://youtu.be/Wnz3w8BDlgg

III. After Our Study

Old Testament Revelation Today

NOTES:

Page 61

REVELATION The Beginning of Tribulation

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ME?

As we reflect on the scenes described in Revelation 8, let’s consider four practical principles.

First, God hears and responds to the prayers of His people. God may not answer your prayers when you expect, but He always responds on-time. Keep trusting Him… even when you can’t track Him. Don’t stop praying!

Have you been praying for something lately and feel like God isn’t answering? What is it? How long have you been petitioning the Lord about this?

How has this made you feel about God? About yourself?

Memorize one or more of the following Scriptures about prayer. Don’t forget to use them when you become anxious and discouraged. Matthew 7:1-11 Ephesians 6:18 1 Thessalonians 5:17-18 1 Timothy 2:1

Second, God uses natural disasters to communicate spiritual messages. This fact is hard to accept, particularly for those who have experienced the terrible disaster of recent years. Sometimes, God uses suffering to direct our attention to Him.

Has God ever used trials, suffering, or disasters to get your attention, to point you to a new path, or to correct your way? What happened? What did you learn about God and yourself?

Page 62

THE 7 TRUMPETS Chapter 8:1-9:21

Third, God’s harsh judgments have a holy purpose. It is no secret that the first four trumpet judgments result in devastation, death, and hardship. We must learn that in the midst of God’s severe discipline, it is imperative to submit, surrender, and release our wills to Him.

Read Hebrews 12:5-11. Produce three personal principles about our proper response to God’s discipline.

1. 2. 3.

Fourth, God won’t stop until His plan is completed. The downside of these first four trumpet judgments is they are only the beginning. In our lives, we can choose to be mindful of the warnings God highlights in His word, through brothers and sisters in Christ, or in our circumstances, or we can harden our hearts. Despite what you do, God will work out His plan.

Do you sense that God has plans for your life that you are resisting? Record a prayer concerning this matter, asking The Lord to uncover any stubbornness or resistance in your heart toward His purposes and ask Him to soften your will and to conform to His will in every way.

Chapter 9 uncovers demonic warfare of the future. How does this relate to spiritual warfare today? Although this section of prophetic Scripture points to events that will take place during the Tribulation, there are four ways this relates to our own lives.

First, we must remember that demons are real and aggressive. As long as demons have freedom to roam this earth, they are seeking to destroy both the saved and unsaved.

Second, be aware that angels of darkness are innumerable, they are organized and committed to our destruction. Satan’s forces are capable to wage war for the hearts and minds of all people. They are ready to use whatever means possible to win.

Page 63

REVELATION The Beginning of Tribulation

Read 1 Peter 5:8. What does this image suggest about our situation in this world?

Ignorance is not bliss… Why is it important to be aware of demonic forces?

Third, we should be encouraged to know that although these demons are powerful… they have limitations and can be restrained. In chapter 9 we see that even during Tribulation, these wicked demons can only do what they are told. Today—in the age of the Spirit’s restraining power through the church—their power is even more limited. (2 Thessalonians 2:6-8)

Fourth, we must always remember that even though these creatures have power, they flee at the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. At His name, they run for cover and scramble to get out of His way. They are no match for Him (Luke 8:26-31).

Read the following passages regarding spiritual warfare. What important truths do you see about spiritual victory?

Ephesians 6:10-17

Revelation 10:1-11: The Mighty Angel and the Little Book

WHAT DOES IT SAY?

hapter 10 brings us almost to the midpoint of the Tribulation Period. This section along with Chapter 11 forms our second parenthetical or interval section. Like Chapter 7, the next two chapters give an insight Cto what God is doing on the side of good, while He is executing judgment on the side of evil. As we approach this chapter, three questions arise:

1. Who is the Mighty Angel? 2. What is the significance of the Seven Thunders? 3. What is the Little Book?

This chapter confronts us with a very important reality, while there is a lot that God does tell us, He does not tell us everything. There are things that as God, He reserves the right to keep to Himself. Our duty is to obey the mind of God that He has shown us, and simply trust Him for the rest.

THE TWO WITNESSES Chapter 11:1-19

Revelation 11:1-19: The Two Witnesses

WHAT DOES IT SAY?

hapter 11 is the continuation of the second parenthetical section and focuses on the spiritual life of Israel. As we saw in Chapter 7, God in His love and mercy continues to preach to unrepentant men C spreading the Gospel of the Kingdom through the ministry work of the 144,000 Jewish Witnesses.

While this group concentrates mainly on the Gentile world, God has Two Super Witnesses that He specifically sends to the Nation of Israel.

During the early part of the Tribulation Period, the Jewish temple has been rebuilt, and Israel, still looking for the , and has reverted back to Old Testament practices. In His pursuit of His rebellious people, God will send two witnesses to them.

These two witnesses perform their ministry work simultaneously with the 144,000 in the first part of the Tribulation Period.

1. Who are these two witnesses? 2. What is the work of these two witnesses? 3. What happens to these two witnesses?

The completion of the ministry work of the two witnesses and the events that immediately follow brings us to the midpoint and sets up the transition from the first half of this period to the last.

THE TWO WITNESSES Chapter 11:1-19

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ME?

When God has His hand on a person’s life and ministry, nothing can silence that ministry and He will allow that ministry to continue until completion. Moreover, not even death can silence the truth that has been proclaimed by that faithful person.

One major truth for today emerges from the account of the two witnesses: God transforms tragic situations into triumphant events... Underdogs become overcomers. Weakness is changed into strength... Overwhelming obstacles are magnificent opportunities for God to display His presence and power.3

Read the following passages and note what they teach about God’s ability to overcome our weaknesses and to accomplish great things through apparently limited means.

Isaiah 52:13-53:12

1 Corinthians 1:25-31

2 Corinthians 12:7-10

REVELATION The Beginning of Tribulation

Looking back over your life, what has been your greatest obstacles, tragedies or disappointments? How have you responded to them?

Based on the principles you’ve learned in this lesson, which one can you relate to most… thinking about your current weaknesses and challenges. How will you respond to future weaknesses and challenges?

Two relevant truths surface from the future events announced by the seventh trumpet.

First, we have unlimited access to God by His grace. The image in Revelation 11:19 tells us that believers stand in an open relationship with God because of His grace and mercy.

Have you personally accepted God’s free gift of salvation? In your own words, explain what you must do to be saved.

Second, our sovereign LORD will reign and reward us. Our responsibility should be one of trust and confident hope in this, as well as taking part in committed service until He returns.

Using the following passages… what are we supposed to be doing in light of His exalted position?

Matthew 28:18-20

Romans 14:10-13

Hebrews 3:12-14

REVELATION The Beginning of Tribulation

Revelation 12:1-6: The Woman with the Baby Boy

WHAT DOES IT SAY?

hapter 12 introduces the second half of the Tribulation period by giving us a heavenly recap of the great C conflict of the ages that has existed from the very beginning up to the present date. It goes back to the initial conflict between God and Satan and carries all of the way through today.

There is a special emphasis on the Nation of Israel as seen in the five key persons listed:

1. The Woman 2. The Dragon 3. The Man Child 4. The Archangel 5. The Remnant

Ephesians Chapter 6 tells us that there is an ongoing fight in the spiritual realm between the powers of good and evil. This fight reaches its climax at the midpoint of the Tribulation Period as God’s forces led by the Archangel Michael bring a final end of Satan’s (The Dragon) residence in the air as he is removed and cast down to the earth.

This sets up the second half of the period giving spiritual insight into the physical events that are about to take place. With the Church, most of the Tribulation Saints, all of the 144,000 witnesses, and the 2 witnesses now deceased; Satan, now banished to the earth, turns his attention on the one group of people who still represent God on the earth…the Nation of Israel (The Woman). It is this emphasis and obsession with his total destruction of Israel, which is why the second half of the period is actually referred to as the Great Tribulation Period. Here Satan unleashes all of his fury on the Remnant (from the Woman) in his attempt to annihilate her as his final revenge against God. Even in this, we see God’s faithfulness as He protects the Remnant until the completion of His plan for this period and the return of the Messiah to save the very people who have rejected Him.

QUESTIONS TO PONDER

What does the Authority of Christ truly represent?

Page 85

REVELATION The Beginning of Tribulation

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ME?

Reread Revelation 12:1-17 and keep in mind the spiritual battle that had been happening behind the scenes is now exposing the strategy of Satan’s empire. We must be mindful, thoughtful, and discerning in our study. Because so much of the truth in this chapter is presented in colorful, vivid symbols, we want to be careful not to misinterpret what they represent or miss the big picture of what they portray.

We only have to remember movies like “Oh, God!” or “Bruce Almighty” to conclude that popular culture holds an often-twisted view of God. Whether He’s portrayed as a wisecracking old man or a wise old custodian—certainly Hollywood gets it wrong more often than they get it right.4

God is not the only One who is often portrayed in ways that twist the truth, Satan is too. This dilemma really creates fear when there should be confidence or false confidence when there should be fear.

How has Satan been portrayed in movies or popular culture? Give some examples.

In what ways do you think the world is right in its interpretation? Where has the world distorted the true picture?

Through the vivid descriptions of Revelation 12, we witness an incredible series of dramatic events that pan heaven and earth, spanning thousands of years. Yet the great epic begun in chapter 12 and concluded in chapter 13 introduces a few practical points that will help us in our everyday lives.5

Page 86

THE DRAGON VERSUS THE WOMAN Chapter 12:13-17

First, Revelation 12 teaches us that, Israel may be blind and disobedient as a nation, but God has not forgotten them. God never reneges on His promises, His reputation is on the line. God will remember His people and will protect them through adversity and persecution. His promise will be fulfilled.

What are some positive and negative examples of current international attitudes toward Jews and the nation of Israel?

Second, Revelation 12 teaches us that although Satan is a powerful and aggressive foe, he will not triumph. Every day and every night Satan accuses us (Revelation 12:10), while at the same time Jesus intercedes for us. One day when Jesus returns, God will resurrect the saints and transform the living, giving them new immortal bodies. That’s the day when Satan’s mouth will be shut, and the countdown to his execution will begin.

As you examine your life, what sins could Satan accuse you of today?

Read Romans 8:1-3, Romans 8:33-37; and 1 John 2:1. Why aren’t believers condemned for their sins?

In the list of sins you identified above… strike through each one and write above it in all capital letters: “PAID IN FULL” Then begin to pray and thank our God for His redemptive power and that Satan cannot legitimately accuse you, because they all have been paid; past, present, and future by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ our LORD!

Page 87

REVELATION The Beginning of Tribulation

Third, Revelation 12 shows us that we may be open and assaulted targets today, but we need not fear. The events of Revelation 12 have not yet come to pass, so Satan is still under the restraint of God’s hand. However, even during the Tribulation. Satan’s time will be short, and he will do only what God allows. We need not fear!6

Read and memorize the following passages that encourage us to stand firm and fearless in the face of spiritual attacks.

Luke 22:31-32

Ephesians 6:12 -13

2 Timothy 1:7

1 Peter 5:8-10

James 4:7-8

1 John 4:4

Even though Satan roams back and forth seeking whom he may devour, setting traps and snares for God’s people, his time is limited, and his destruction is at hand. We must remember, that his schemes and plans for us must be submitted to the sovereignty of God. Because of this truth, believers can have confident hope in God, who promises to be faithful to protect His people from Satan’s attacks both now and in the future. Our only hope is in Christ Jesus… We Win!
