711.08 Arc- & Fluxes

1. Specification:

711.08 C&MS.

2. Sampling and/or Inspection Requirements:

All and fluxes shall be inspected after delivery to the project for dimensions, markings and condition. Dimensions and marking shall be checked for compliance with the requirements shown in the addendum in section 4.

Electrodes shall be subject to rejection for failure to conform to any of the specification requirements. Check with District Engineer of Tests for the electrode or cores you are using, if on the Approved List, material may be used. Check for compliance with 711.08 Addendum and note in daily diary number.

The current approved list is available on OMM website at http://www.dot.state.oh.us/Divisions/ConstructionMgt/Materials/Approved-List/Pages/default.aspx

If the electrode is not on the approved list, a certification from the supplier carrying all of the test data including date of test required by the specification must be submitted with the TE-30. Do not use until the electrode has been approved.

The TE-30 and certified data must be submitted to OMM for evaluation thru the District Engineer of Tests. (Field)

Definition of markings for AWS A5.1 and A5.5

E7018 First and second digits (sometimes a third if five digits) [70] define min tensile strength of the final weld

Third digit defines positions the weld rod is made to be used in

1 = all position [flat, horizontal, vertical up, overhead]

2 = flat and horizontal

Fourth digit defines the type of shielding

0 High cellulose sodium

1 High cellulose potassium

2 High titania sodium

3 High titania potassium

4 iron powder titania

5 low sodium

6 low hydrogen potassium

7 iron powder iron

8 iron powder low hydrogen

Letters after the four digit numbers are reference to specific chemistries. As example:

G has and Used to match final chemistry of ASTM A588 weathering

Submerged Arc Electrodes AWS A5.17 and A5.23

Package:

1. Classification and specification numbers.

2. Suppliers name and trade designation.

3. Electrode size and net weight.

4. Lot control or heat number.

5. "Caution label concerning fumes"

Submerged Arc Fluxes AWS A5.17 and A5.23

Packages:

1. Flux classification and specification numbers.

2. Suppliers name and trade designation.

3. Net weight.

4. Lot or control number.

5. "Caution label concerning fumes"

Classification and Markings meanings A5.17 and A5.23

FABC-EGHI

F = flux

A = minimum tensile strength in 10,000 psi increments

B = indicates heat treatment requirements to achieve required weld properties

A = as welded

P = Post weld heat treatment required

C = Indicates lowest temperature at which the impact properties of the finished weld exceed 20 ft-lb (27 Joules)

E = Electrode

GHI= designates the required electrode used to with the flux to produce the flux's designated properties

Gas Metal Arc Electrode AWS A5.18

Packages:

1. Classification and specification numbers.

2. Suppliers name and trade designation.

3. Electrode size and net weight.

4. Lot, control or heat number.

5. "Caution label concerning fumes".

/®©Ø $•∞°≤¥≠ •Æ¥ ض 4≤°Æ≥∞Ø≤¥°¥©ØÆ   3°≠ ∞¨©Æß °Æ§ 4•≥¥©Æß - °Æµ°¨ 0°ß•

Flux Cored Arc Electrodes AWS A5.20

Packages:

1. Classification and specification numbers.

2. Suppliers name and trade designation.

3. Electrode size and net weight.

4. Lot, control or heat number.

5. "Caution label concerning fumes".

Approval of each electrode and flux combination requires testing of the two materials together as a single test. An electrode tested with other fluxes does not qualify other fluxes for use with that electrode and vice versa.

Standard designations for AWS A5.18 and 5.20

EXYT-Z-A E = electrode

X = minimum tensile strength of final weld in 10,000 psi increments

Y = indicate primary welding position

0 = flat and horizontal

1 = all positions

T = indicates a flux cored electrode S = Gas Metal Electrode S= requires gas shielding

Z = usability and performance

A = indicates chemical composition
