Of the four options below, choose THREE to complete by Friday, April 3. 1. Create flashcards for the following terms: domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species, and taxonomy, binomial nomenclature. Each flashcard must have a definition, a picture, and an example. 2. Compose your own song or rap for taxonomy and classification. Choose your favorite song or beat, and create your own science lyrics for it! 3. Create a venn diagram comparing and contrasting plant and cells. Also draw diagrams of a plant and animal cell with labels and descriptions of each organelle. 4. For each of the following, use the dichotomous key to figure out the name of the organism. Name: ______Id#: ______Teacher: ______Pre AP Biology Week 2: Classification & Taxonomy Rap

There are millions and millions of species, (That's a lot.) Of living things, from bald eagles to seaweed. (Wow.) Each year we find plenty more, (Oh really?) High up in the jungle canopy or on the ocean floor. We organize and classify them all, Based on similarities and how they evolved. (Changed over time.) When you group and name things, that's taxonomy, There are eight levels, just follow me.

There are three domains up at the top, And six kingdoms come next, it don't stop. Then phylum, class, order, family, genus, species, “I have no idea what you're talking about.” Well, you see, we give Latin names to everything that's alive, “Like Roberto?” Nah, not quite. are Homo sapiens, that's the Latin name, Let's classify a now, I can explain. First our domain, it's Eukarya, All plants and , no we're not bacteria. (Thank goodness.) Our kingdom's Animalia, you can guess, That's animals, so plants just step to the left. (I hate plants.) Our phylum is Chordata, yep, And that includes everything with a spinal cord in its back. Class is Mammalia, a yeah, 'Cause we feed babies milk, we breathe the air. Our order must be , That includes , baboons and the great . Our family is Hominidae, That includes gorillas and the chimpanzees. Genus is Homo, which is Latin for human, But it includes Lucy too, now we're zooming. To the species, in that we're sapiens, Which means “wise” in Latin, let me say again…

Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species last. (x2) We classify living things into groups, Learn a little Latin, get to know the truth.
