Smolina* Siberian Federal University 79 Svobodny, Krasnoyarsk, 660041, Russia Received 15.07.2014, received in revised form 10.10.2014, accepted 01.12.2014 The subject of this article is the reflection of the Siberian indigenous people, the Kets (or so called “the Ostyaks”) in works by D.I. Karatanov. The aim of the research is achieved by analysis of individual features of these works – portraits, landscapes and many-figured scenes of everyday life. In this research were used such methods as structural and semantic analysis of art works, revelation and analysis of main compositional patterns, consideration of immanation and emanation parts of an artistic image. Following the results of the research, work plays the role of a fore-praying to the nature in the life of Kets fishermen. The result can be used in art sphere of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, history and culture of the Siberian Region and in researches dedicated to national and cultural identity. Serie orientale e-ISSN 2385-3042 Vol. 54 – Giugno 2018 ISSN 1125-3789 Venetian Hosts and Ottoman Guests in the Venedik Sarayı in Constantinople (c. 1670-1681) Maria Pia Pedani (Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, Italia) Abstract After the end of the Cretan war (1645-1669) and before the starting of the Morean war (1684-1699) Venetian diplomats settled again in Constantinople and in the Venetian Palace (Venedik Sarayı) that had been the embassy of the Republic for centuries. In this period baili and extraordinary ambassadors (ambasciatori straordinari) used to celebrate Venetian or Ottoman civic and religious festivals with dinners and parties. Their guests were above all other European diplomats and middle- ranking Ottoman officials. Some Turks, above all those who lived in the neighbourhood, contributed to the organisation of such events with their gifts and, in exchange, they received money or other presents. This paper aims to study the circulation of objects and commodities between Europe and the Ottoman Empire and, in particular, which kind of items were exchanged before or during official dinners held in the Venetian Palace or in the Venetian summer houses in Arnavutköy and Balta Liman. The Turks brought or sent mostly vegetables, flowers and different kind of food, while Venetians used to give to their guests not only the famous Venetian cloths but also unusual objects such as ivory boxes, gloves, brushes, glass sculptures, mirrors, fans, fake flowers and so on. The sources used for this research are the accounting books of the Venetian embassy for the years 1670-83. Keywords Gift exchange. -

Serge Jaroff and the Don Cossack Choir: the State of Research in the 21st Century Donna Arnold, University of North Texas Serge Jaroff’s Don Cossack Choir was founded at a miserable Turkish concentration camp in 1921 in an attempt to raise morale. It drew singers from the Tsarist Don Cossack regiments deported by the Red Army after their defeat in the Russian revolution. Jaroff, a detainee, had graduated from the famous Moscow Synodal Choir School, so he was ordered to conduct it. He arranged repertoire for it from memory, and against all odds, polished 36 amateurs into a brilliant world-class unit. Once freed, the destitute men stayed together and kept singing. Discovered by an impresario, they gave a groundbreaking concert at Vienna’s Hofburg on July 4, 1923, which launched their remarkable professional career. Journal of Ukrainian Studies 35–36 (2010–2011) Reconstructive Forgery: The Hadiach Agreement (1658) in the History of the Rus' Serhii Plokhy Few events in Ukrainian and Polish history have provoked as many what-ifs as the agreement concluded between the Cossack hetman Ivan Vyhovsky and representa- tives of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth near the city of Hadiach in the autumn of 1658. Long before the rise of virtual and counterfactual history, historians in Poland and Ukraine defied the maxim of positivist historiography—that history has no subjunctive mood—and plunged into speculation on how differently the history of both countries would have turned out if, instead of fighting prolonged and exhausting wars, Poland-Lithuania and the Hetmanate had reunited in a new and reformed Com- monwealth. Would this have stopped the decline of Poland, the ruin of Ukraine, Ottoman interventions, and the rise of Muscovy as the dominant force in the region? The Union of Hadiach, as the agreement became known in historiography, had the potential to influence all these processes. It envisioned the creation of a tripartite Commonwealth—the Kingdom of Poland, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and a Principality of Rus', with the Cossack hetman as its official head. The union was the culmination of the activities of moderate forces among the Polish and Ukrainian elites and the embodiment of the hopes and dreams of the Ruthenian (Ukrainian and Bela- rusian) nobility of the first half of the seventeenth century. Nevertheless, the com- promise that the union embodied was rejected by mainstream forces on both sides. The Commonwealth Diet ratified the text of the treaty with a number of important omis- sions, but even in that form it was viewed with suspicion and rejected by the Polish nobiliary elites, which could not reconcile themselves to the prospect of Orthodox Cossacks enjoying equal rights with Catholic nobles. -

THE CONFERENCE OF ENSLAVED AND OPPRESSED PEOPLES IN EDINBURGH Cossackia 15-16 (IX.X.1950): 7-14 Translated by Maria Artamonova Over the last years of the Second World War and during the harsh post-war years, the Anti- Bolshevik Bloc of Nations carried out a lot of work in order to consolidate the aspirations and actions of the nations enslaved by Bolshevism, to coordinate their joint efforts in a national liberation movement, and to provide adequate coverage of the problem of these nations for the Western social and political audience. The rich and diverse publications produced in all the main languages and sent to all the countries of the world have accomplished a colossal task. A whole range of socio-political circles in the West now have a considerable interest in the plight of the nations enslaved and oppressed by Bolshevism. Among these circles, it was the Scottish League for European Freedom that put forward the initiative to convene a conference of these nations in the United Kingdom, to make it possible for British circles to get to know the representatives of these nations and their problems. The Scottish League has brought under its protection the conference of all nations enslaved by the Bolsheviks and taken an active part in procuring the required travel documents for the delegates; during the conference itself, the heads of the delegations of the nations represented at the conference were its guests of honour. In order to give the British an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the facts about these nations, the Scottish League released a special English-language brochure on each of them. -

As the movement took shape and matured, the Peredvizhniki became undisputed leaders in the development of art. They quickly gained the public’s affection and took an important place in Russia’s cultural life. Russian art is deeply indebted to the Peredvizhniki for discovering new themes and subjects, developing critical genre painting, and for their achievements in psychological portrait painting. The Peredvizhniki changed people’s attitude to Russian national landscape, and made them take a fresh look at the course of Russian history. Their critical insight in contemporary events acquired a completely new quality. Touching on painful and challenging top-of-the agenda issues, they did not forget about eternal values, guessing the existential meaning behind everyday details, and seeing archetypal importance in current-day matters. Rather than projecting today’s political borders into the past and proceeding from the claim that the Cossacks are either Russian or Ukrainian, this comparative project analyzes the nineteenth-century narratives that transform pre- national Cossack history into national patrimony. Following the Romantic era debates about national identity in the Russian empire, during which the Cossacks become part of both Ukrainian and Russian national self-definition, this dissertation focuses on the role of historical narrative in these burgeoning political projects. -

History, 2020, vol. 65, issue 3, рp. 771–789. https://doi.org/10.21638/11701/spbu02.2020.305 The issue of the development of military traditions in the Cossack milieu on the eve of the 20th century is a matter of debate in contemporary Russian historiography. A number of scholars (e. g., A. V. Iarovoi and N. V. Ryzhkova) have argued that the Cossacks’ system of historical military traditions remained viable until 1917. Other researchers (e. g., O. V. Matveev) have claimed that the system of Cossack military traditions had actually experienced a crisis and collapsed by then. This paper seeks to establish the truth. To accomplish this, the authors draws upon a set of newly discovered responses from Russian generals to the report of the Maslakovets Commission. The paper shows that the Cossacks’ historical traditions of military training in the stanitsas were forgotten not by the beginning of the 20th century, but by the 1860s. During this time, declining combat capability of the Don units, with 50 % of the young Cossacks entering military service by the beginning of the 20th century “poorly” and “unsat- isfactorily” prepared, drew the attention of Alexander II. The War Ministry endeavored to revive the Cossacks’ martial games and military training in the stanitsas. However, according to certain Cossack generals, its actions, at the same time, had violated the historical Cossack traditions of military training, causing, by certain testimonies, their total ruin by the begin- ning of the 20th century.
