Degree awarded June 2017 ii © 2017 Anna Kovalchuk iii DISSERTATION ABSTRACT Anna Kovalchuk Doctor of Philosophy Department of Comparative Literature June 2017 Title: Narrating the National Future: The Cossacks in Ukrainian and Russian Romantic Literature This dissertation investigates nineteenth-century narrative representations of the Cossacks—multi-ethnic warrior communities from the historical borderlands of empire, known for military strength, pillage, and revelry—as contested historical figures in modern identity politics. Rather than projecting today’s political borders into the past and proceeding from the claim that the Cossacks are either Russian or Ukrainian, this comparative project analyzes the nineteenth-century narratives that transform pre- national Cossack history into national patrimony. Following the Romantic era debates about national identity in the Russian empire, during which the Cossacks become part of both Ukrainian and Russian national self-definition, this dissertation focuses on the role of historical narrative in these burgeoning political projects. Drawing on Alexander Pushkin’s Poltava (1828), Nikolai Gogol’s Taras Bulba (1835, 1842), and Taras Shevchenko’s Haidamaky (1842), this dissertation traces the relationship between Cossack history, the poet-historian, and possible national futures in Ukrainian and Russian Romantic literature. In the age of empire, these literary representations shaped the emerging Ukrainian and Russian nations, conceptualized national belonging in terms of the domestic family unit, and reimagined the genealogical relationship between iv Ukrainian and Russian history. Uniting the national “we” in its readership, these Romantic texts prioritize the poet-historian’s creative, generative power and their ability to discover, legitimate, and project the nation into the future. CONCLUSION ....................................................................................................... 195 REFERENCES CITED ................................................................................................ 200 x CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION In 1995, a thought-provoking discussion in Slavic Review began with Mark von Hagen’s essay, “Does Ukraine Have a History?”1 Von Hagen defines history as “a written record of [an] experienced past that commands some widespread acceptance and authority in the international scholarly and political communities” (658). Due to a lack of statehood in the nineteenth century, the essay explains that Ukraine and other central and eastern European states are “suspect candidates in the international order” and “have been denied full historiographical legitimacy” in the twentieth century (659-60). While arguing that no, Ukraine does not have a history, von Hagen understands Ukraine’s historiographical weakness as a strength “precisely because it challenges so many of the clichés of the nation-state paradigm” (673). While von Hagen’s article and the response essays focus on the twentieth century, another rich context for this debate can be found amidst the shifting imperial borders and emerging national narratives of the early nineteenth-century Romantic era. Though the nation-state dominates our contemporary understanding of borders, histories, and literatures, the concept of the nation is relatively modern and gained currency in the late eighteenth century amidst the declining legitimacy of autocratic and dynastic frameworks of power.2 While military might and imperial expansion legitimated civilizations in the eighteenth century, the post- Napoleonic world also required proof of national uniqueness and autonomous historical development made visible in literary language and narrative history. This dissertation focuses on the intertwined and overlapping development of national, historical, and 1 literary narratives in the early nineteenth-century Russian empire and situates the ongoing debates about Ukrainian history within a global story of national and narrative discovery. The nation’s relative modernity and its concomitant claims to antiquity evidence the importance of history to past and present nationalisms.3 Via a simultaneous discovery of the past, legitimation of the present, and

Under the command of Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky , the Cossacks [warrior caste] allied with the Crimean Tatars, and the local peasantry, fought several battles against forces of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The result was an eradication of the control of the Polish and their Jewish intermediaries. Between 1648 and 1656, tens of thousands of Jews—given the lack of reliable data, it is impossible to establish more accurate figures—were killed by the rebels, and to this day the Khmelnytsky uprising is considered by Jews to be one of the most traumatic events in their history . The losses inflicted on the Jews of Poland during the fatal decade 1648-1658 were appalling. In the reports of the chroniclers, the number of Jewish victims varies between one hundred thousand and five hundred thousand…even exceeding the catastrophes of the Crusades and the Black Death in Western Europe. Some seven hundred Jewish communities in Poland had suffered massacre and pillage . In the Ukrainian cities situated on the left banks of the Dnieper, the region populated by Cossacks... the Jewish communities had disappeared almost completely . In this period baili and extraordinary ambassadors (ambasciatori straordinari) used to celebrate Venetian or Ottoman civic and religious festivals with dinners and parties. Their guests were above all other European diplomats and middle- ranking Ottoman officials. Some Turks, above all those who lived in the neighbourhood, contributed to the organisation of such events with their gifts and, in exchange, they received money or other presents. This paper aims to study the circulation of objects and commodities between Europe and the Ottoman Empire and, in particular, which kind of items were exchanged before or during official dinners held in the Venetian Palace or in the Venetian summer houses in Arnavutköy and Balta Liman. The Turks brought or sent mostly vegetables, flowers and different kind of food, while Venetians used to give to their guests not only the famous Venetian cloths but also unusual objects such as ivory boxes, gloves, brushes, glass sculptures, mirrors, fans, fake flowers and so on.     Journal of Ukrainian Studies 35–36 (2010–2011) Reconstructive Forgery: The Hadiach Agreement (1658) in the History of the Rus' Serhii Plokhy Few events in Ukrainian and Polish history have provoked as many what-ifs as the agreement concluded between the Cossack hetman Ivan Vyhovsky and representa- tives of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth near the city of Hadiach in the autumn of 1658. Long before the rise of virtual and counterfactual history, historians in Poland and Ukraine defied the maxim of positivist historiography—that history has no subjunctive mood—and plunged into speculation on how differently the history of both countries would have turned out if, instead of fighting prolonged and exhausting wars, Poland-Lithuania and the Hetmanate had reunited in a new and reformed Com- monwealth. Would this have stopped the decline of Poland, the ruin of Ukraine, Ottoman interventions, and the rise of Muscovy as the dominant force in the region? The Union of Hadiach, as the agreement became known in historiography, had the potential to influence all these processes. It envisioned the creation of a tripartite Commonwealth—the Kingdom of Poland, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and a Principality of Rus', with the Cossack hetman as its official head. The union was the culmination of the activities of moderate forces among the Polish and Ukrainian elites and the embodiment of the hopes and dreams of the Ruthenian (Ukrainian and Bela- rusian) nobility of the first half of the seventeenth century. Nevertheless, the com- promise that the union embodied was rejected by mainstream forces on both sides. The Commonwealth Diet ratified the text of the treaty with a number of important omis- sions, but even in that form it was viewed with suspicion and rejected by the Polish nobiliary elites, which could not reconcile themselves to the prospect of Orthodox Cossacks enjoying equal rights with Catholic nobles.

It is worth mentioning that many scientists from various countries wrote about N. Wassilko, but separate studies about his life and political activities have not been written yet. Author paid considerable attention to the formation of N. Wassilko's political views, the evolution of his preferences from conservative Rusynism and Moscophilia philosophy to the populistic doctrine. Since the beginning of the 20th century, N. Wassilko became almost the sole leader of Ukrainians in Bukovina. The article presents the analysis of his activities in the Austrian Parliament, the Diet of Bukovina, public organizations, and his initiatives to resolve various regional issues. His activities in the years of World War I were equally rich. In particular, the article shows his diplomatic activities as the ambassador of the ZUNR (West Ukrainian People's Republic) in Vienna, the ambassador of the UPR (Ukrainian People's Republic) in Switzerland and other countries. At the end of the research, the author points out the remarkable path of N. Wassilko in the history of the Ukrainian movement in Bukovina in the early twentieth century, as one of the central figures of the Ukrainian diplomacy during 1918-1924.

It will take its place alongside earlier English-language translations of the History. Currently, volume one is in print, while volumes 2–5 are projected; this sequence, volumes 1–5, covers the time period through the fif- teenth century. The translation of volume ten represents something a bit different—the completion of a four-volume subseries (#7–10) within the History; these volumes deal with the early modern history of Ukrainian Cossacks from the fifteenth century through to 1659 and the ratification of the Treaty of Hadiach. Mykhailo Hrushevsky was at work on this, the tenth volume of his history of Ukraine-Rus,’ when he died in 1934. When he died, only the first part of a longer intended volume was substantially complete.

The term Moldavia and Moldova mean the same region! Moldova is in Romanian language and Moldavia was adopted by Russian and other languages, including English. Charles King in 'The Moldovans. Romania, Russia, and the Politics of Culture', Stanford U., 1999 writes that 'It is a myth that Moldova changed its name from Moldavia. What happened in the 1990s was simply that we in the West became better informed about what locals themselves had always called it.' So let's dive into the history of the region: Moldavia is known as a country or Principality from 14 century until 1812. There were also two other Danube or Romanian Principalities - Walachia and Transilvania. At some point in the history Moldavia joined other Principalities. In 1538 Moldavia surrendered to Ottoman Empire, and remained under Turks for about 300 years.

The Battle of Poltava fought on June 27-28, 1709 was the decisive victory of Peter I of Russia over Charles XII of Sweden in the most famous of the battles of the Great Northern War. While the date given on the map reflects a July 8, 1709 battle, the modern date is given as June 27-28. After the Battle of Narva in 1700, Czar Peter I was reorganized his army, while Charles XII of Sweden fought for 6 years against Augustus II of Saxony-Poland. Peter first offensive move with his reorganized Russian Army was to establish the city of Saint Petersburg in Swedish territory. Charles attacked the Russian heartland with the intent on an assault on Moscow from Poland. The Swedish army of almost 44,000 men left Saxony on August 22, 1707 and marched eastwards. When they reached the Vistula River and crossed on December 30, then continued through Masuria and took Grodno on January 28, 1708. The Swedes continued to the area around Smorgon and Minsk ,where the army went into winter quarters.
