A team of marine experts illuminate the beauty and diversity of fish life of the Indo-Pacific reefs. Includes 2,500 color photographs of 2,000 species inhabiting this realm.

Brash, Celeste and Jean-Bernard Carillet. Lonely Planet: Tahiti and French Polynesia. Lonely Planet. 2016. With thorough history, food and Tahitian language sections, this market-leading guidebook features all the archipelagos of French Polynesia and includes over 30 maps.

Kay, Robert F. Hidden Tahiti & French Polynesia. Ulysses Press. 2008. A comprehensive guide to French Polynesia, with individual chapters on Tahiti, Huahine, Ra’iatea, Taha’a, Mo’orea and Bora Bora. The author provides background information on the islands’ history and culture.

Pratt H., Douglas, Phul Bruner and Delwyn G. Bernett. A Field Guide to the Birds of and the Tropical Pacific. Princeton University Press. 1987. Although published over 30 years ago, this volume remains the authoritative field guide to the birds of the . Beautiful color plates and a checklist accompany the text.

Ryan, Paddy. The Snorkeller’s Guide to the Coral Reef: From the Red Sea to the Pacific Ocean. University of Hawaii Press. 1994. Both neophyte and experienced snorkelers will find this a useful introduction to the reefs of our planet. Two hundred color photographs bring this fascinating undersea world to life.

Stanley, David. Moon Handbooks: Tahiti. Avalon Travel Publishing. 2011. This compact, well-written guidebook features a wealth of information on the people, ecology, culture, history and principal attractions of French Polynesia.

Whistler W., Arthur. Flowers of the Pacific Island Seashore. Isle Botanica. 1993. Whistler introduces the reader to the exuberant flora of Polynesia, one of the Earth’s richest botanical environments.

 HISTORY AND CULTURE Campbell, Ian C. Worlds Apart: A History of the Pacific Islands. Canterbury University Press. 2011. Campbell, a renowned historian from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, traces the history of the Polynesian archipelagoes from their early settlement by Polynesian seafarers through the colonial era to contemporary times.

Denoon, Donald and Malama Meleisea. The Cambridge History of the Pacific Islanders. Cambridge University Press. 1997. Part of the highly acclaimed Cambridge History series, this collaborative effort by leading scholars presents a comprehensive overview of the history of the South Pacific from Neolithic times to the modern era.

Hough, Richard. Captain James Cook. W.W. Norton & Company. 1995. This is a lively and engrossing biography of the great 18th-century British explorer with a focus on his three Pacific expeditions between 1768 and 1779.

Kirch, Patrick Vinton. On the Road of the Winds: An Archaeological History of the Pacific Islands before European Contact, Revised and Expanded Edition. University of California Press. 2017. Kirch’s work examines the early settlement of the islands of the South Pacific and the growth of Polynesian societies. The new edition additionally highlights the wealth of relevant knowledge that has come to light over the past 20 years.

 ART AND ARCHITECTURE Cachin, Françoise. Gauguin: The Quest for Paradise. Harry N. Abrams. 1992. With its focus on Gauguin’s years in Tahiti, excerpts from his journals and reproductions of his paintings, this work offers useful insights into the life of this celebrated post-Impressionist artist.

D’Alleva, Anne. Arts of the Pacific Islands. Yale University Press. 2010. The beauty and diversity of the art forms of Polynesia—architecture, sculpture, painting, textiles and dance—are highlighted in this compact volume.

Thomas, Nicholas. Oceanic Art. Thames & Hudson. 2018. This updated volume in the World of Art series examines the art of the South Pacific islands in cultural and political contexts. Numerous black and white as well as color photos accompany the text.

 LITERATURE AND TRAVEL MEMOIRS Gauguin, Paul and John Miller (ed.). Noa Noa: The Tahiti Journal of Paul Gauguin. Chronicle Books. 2005. Originally published in 1919, this account of Gauguin’s years in Tahiti is accompanied by reproductions of the artist’s watercolors and etchings.

Hall, James Norman and Charles Nordhoff. Mutiny on the Bounty. Little, Brown & Company. 1989. This fast-paced, popular narrative recounts the famous mutiny aboard the HMS Bounty in 1789. Readers should bear in mind that in writing the classic South Seas adventure tale, the authors took certain historical liberties. Originally published in 1932.

Michener, James A. Tales of the South Pacific. New York: Macmillan. 1947. Based on his experiences in Mo’orea during World War II, Michener’s novel earned him the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1948 and inspired the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific.

Vaite, Célestine. Frangipani: A Novel. Back Bay Books. 2006. This modern piece of Polynesian literature is both charming and culturally informative. It chronicles the archetypal mother-daughter conflict as the protagonist seeks balance between Tahitian traditions and modern-day practices.

 FOOD Choy, Sam. Sam Choy's Polynesian Kitchen: More Than 150 Authentic Dishes from One of the World's Most Delicious and Overlooked Cuisines. Hyperion. 2002. Renowned chef Choy shares recipes from his native Hawaii and other parts of the South Pacific, including Tahiti and the other Society Islands. It features dishes like Tahitian niçoise salad alongside luscious color photographs and Choy’s witty commentary.

Oliver, Robert. Me'a Kai: The Food and Flavours of the South Pacific. Random House New Zealand. 2010. Oliver, an internationally acclaimed chef from New Zealand, brings us nearly 100 recipes from French Polynesia and other parts of the South Pacific on this culinary journey. The recipes are interspersed with anecdotes from his encounters with local chefs and farmers whom he consulted with while compiling this cookbook.

 DOCUMENTARIES AND FILMS Listed below are films, documentaries and travel programs featuring Tahiti and French Polynesia. All should be available on DVD and/or Blu-ray at your local library and/or bookstores, or may be watched or ordered online.

The Blue Planet: Seas of Life. 2013. Filmed over the course of five years, this three-disc set explores the watery realm that covers 70% of our planet’s surface. The 2013 release introduces the viewer to the ocean’s varied habitats and teeming marine life and also includes interviews and behind-the-scenes footage.

Mutiny on the Bounty. 1935. Directed by Frank Lloyd. One of the earliest cinematic versions of Nordhoff and Hall’s novel, this epic production starring Charles Laughton as Captain Bligh and Clark Gable as Fletcher Christian received the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1935.

Mutiny on the Bounty. 1962. Directed by Lewis Milestone. This MGM remake of its 1935 version features Trevor Howard as the tyrannical Captain Bligh and Marlon Brando as the dashing Christian Fletcher. Although a cinematically beautiful production, it takes considerable liberties with the historical record.

South Pacific. BBC. 2009. The stunning filmography in this documentary series brings French Polynesia and other parts of the Pacific islands to life. Narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch.

 MUSIC AND AUDIO RECORDINGS www.worldmusic.net The Rough Guide and the World Music Network publish a variety of French Polynesian music as well as thoroughly researched book guides to international music generally.

Various Artists. Magic of The South Seas: Tahiti Marquesas Islands Tokelau. ARC Music. 2000. An enjoyable introduction to the musical styles and island melodies associated with Polynesia.

Various Artists. Polynesian Potpourri. Mahalo Records. 2000. This mood-enhancing CD (also available on vinyl) covers Polynesia’s most well-known musical genres and traditional Tahitian dances, including percussive oteas (defined by rapid hip shaking) and aparimas (hand movements that convey a folk story).
