At this juncture we have only one point to be finalised. This is the voting structure. Currently having a division 1 and 2 team entitles a Club to an additional vote but the committee recommended a vote per team, thus giving clubs voting power relevant to size. The committee feels that this more democratic method should be used. Hopefully this may be finalised at the 1999 AGM. I would like to thank Keith Tidey for his organisation of the committee and its work and Sue Andersen for her constitutional expertise. Saturday at Downey Park has been somewhat easier for management with two people employed to actually run an office and be available to answer questions. As a neutral person it was possible for them to defuse situations with management making decisions in a calmer environment. I believe this was a great benefit to the Junior Management team in particular. This has been a very disjointed season with Champions Trophy and excessive rain. All this led to many changes of fixtures that made our staff on Saturdays invaluable. To accommodate the Champions Trophy, as we could not play fixtures for two weeks, we reduced the fixtures by three games by increasing divisions from 8 teams to 10. This also had the advantage of reducing the number of Sunday games played. I believe with the need for young people to work while studying, we must endeavour to standardise our fixtures to a certain day where possible. We do wish to encourage young women to continue playing sport for as long as possible. 2000 also poses problems, in that, we will need to be finished before the Olympics start on 16th September. The Champions Trophy was a wonderful opportunity for the people of Brisbane to see the best hockey in the world. It was an extraordinary event, well run and the media gave good coverage. The ball attendants were very professional and well trained by Marilyn Chatfield. This was a once in a lifetime experience for them. Also for the Hockeyroo's and Kookaburra's legion of fans to see them live and to actually talk to them. All the international players were very approachable and many autographs signed. The series culminated in both Australian men and women winning the event. Another major event was hosted by Brisbane. This was the Queensland veterans championship. The weather was perfect for the international event but became impossible for the vets. As much as possible was played with the aim of achieving a result. I wish to congratulate Elsie Quaite, Ronda Nix and Fay Wastell among many, for dealing with an almost impossible situation with remarkable calm. We have joined with Brisbane Hockey Association, Hockey Queensland and the State Hockey Centre to capitalise on the media interest and to hopefully gain some sponsorship dollars by jointly employing a person to market Hockey in Brisbane. This may cause us to rethink how fixtures are run at the State Hockey Centre to maximise the exposure for any sponsor and to increase the gate, canteen and club takings. Should an under 15 girls competition run on Sunday morning rather that representative training? Watch your daughter and then have a family breakfast! We need to look closely at our timing structures. Another achievement this year has been a joint application to State Government for coach and umpire training funding by six clubs. This was organised by Sharon Simpson our Regional Coaching Director. Hopefully it will alleviate the long recognised problem of lack of coaching staff. We have also applied for funding for risk management planning and have already made improvements in this area with a first aider at Rasey Park. 6 During the year we received funding for lights for field 10 at Downey Park and a lighting upgrade for Rasey Park. In the next year we must move with the times and establish a presence on the internet with our own site, linked to club sites. Registrations and updates should be done electronically. All our fixture results should be kept on a computer ready to input to a web site. Also in the finance area we should improve our accountability and transparency by having budgets for each portfolio. Currently the budgeting process is below par. These ideas are merely scratching the surface of ideas using technology that can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Brisbane Women's Hockey Association. This has been a successful year in that we achieved some things that have been planned for some years, notably the constitution, the joint club funding application and the joint marketing arrangements. We have also initiated negotiations with Hockey Queensland in respect to a student fee for full time students over the age of sixteen. In 2000, with the risk management strategy in place we will have a sound administrative base to challenge the next century.

CelebratingCelebrating 11/11/1995 - 11/11/2020 Foreword Letter from current President Steve Stewart Hockey Queensland today spans 23 Associations and includes Master’s and Indoor Hockey, but that has not always been the case. In the 1990s a group of people had a vision of unification for our sport to enhance its management and provide opportunities and pathways for its athletes. Their efforts were rewarded in 1995 with the birth of Hockey Queensland (HQ) as a unified male and female State Sporting Organisation. The concept of HQ was first seriously proposed in 1993 by Daphne Pirie and Jim Quaite, the Presidents of Queensland Women’s Hockey Association and Queensland Hockey Association respectively. Through their diligence and the efforts of others, including the Steering Committee of Dennis Binnington, John Giles, Julie McNeil, Elsie Quaite and Janne Ellis we have evolved into the HQ of today. I consider the longevity of people’s involvement in hockey as one of the most endearing features of our sports culture, as many of the people who contributed to the creation of QWHA, QHA and of course HQ, are still involved in Hockey in Queensland. I would particularly like to thank Janne Ellis for her commitment to Hockey Queensland. Janne was there at the beginning and remains with us as our ‘historian’ and jack of all trades. Janne your contribution is appreciated. Go #TeamQLD, Steve Stewart Celebrating 25 years of Hockey Queensland On the 11th November 1995, Queensland Women’s Hockey Association and Queensland Men’s Hockey Association merged to form Hockey Queensland Incorporated. On the same date in 2020, Hockey Queensland Limited celebrates the silver anniversary of the amalgamation.
