5 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

This year our main achievement has been rewriting the constitution. At this juncture we have only one point to be finalised. This is the voting structure. Currently having a division 1 and 2 team entitles a Club to an additional vote but the committee recommended a vote per team, thus giving clubs voting power relevant to size. The committee feels that this more democratic method should be used. Hopefully this may be finalised at the 1999 AGM. I would like to thank Keith Tidey for his organisation of the committee and its work and Sue Andersen for her constitutional expertise.

Saturday at Downey Park has been somewhat easier for management with two people employed to actually run an office and be available to answer questions. As a neutral person it was possible for them to defuse situations with management making decisions in a calmer environment. I believe this was a great benefit to the Junior Management team in particular. This has been a very disjointed season with Champions Trophy and excessive rain. All this led to many changes of fixtures that made our staff on Saturdays invaluable.

To accommodate the Champions Trophy, as we could not play fixtures for two weeks, we reduced the fixtures by three games by increasing divisions from 8 teams to 10. This also had the advantage of reducing the number of Sunday games played. I believe with the need for young people to work while studying, we must endeavour to standardise our fixtures to a certain day where possible. We do wish to encourage young women to continue playing sport for as long as possible. 2000 also poses problems, in that, we will need to be finished before the Olympics start on 16th September.

The Champions Trophy was a wonderful opportunity for the people of Brisbane to see the best hockey in the world. It was an extraordinary event, well run and the media gave good coverage. The ball attendants were very professional and well trained by Marilyn Chatfield. This was a once in a lifetime experience for them. Also for the Hockeyroo's and Kookaburra's legion of fans to see them live and to actually talk to them. All the international players were very approachable and many autographs signed. The series culminated in both Australian men and women winning the event.

Another major event was hosted by Brisbane. This was the Queensland veterans championship. The weather was perfect for the international event but became impossible for the vets. As much as possible was played with the aim of achieving a result. I wish to congratulate Elsie Quaite, Ronda Nix and Fay Wastell among many, for dealing with an almost impossible situation with remarkable calm.

We have joined with Brisbane Hockey Association, Hockey Queensland and the State Hockey Centre to capitalise on the media interest and to hopefully gain some sponsorship dollars by jointly employing a person to market Hockey in Brisbane. This may cause us to rethink how fixtures are run at the State Hockey Centre to maximise the exposure for any sponsor and to increase the gate, canteen and club takings. Should an under 15 girls competition run on Sunday morning rather that representative training? Watch your daughter and then have a family breakfast! We need to look closely at our timing structures.

Another achievement this year has been a joint application to State Government for coach and umpire training funding by six clubs. This was organised by Sharon Simpson our Regional Coaching Director. Hopefully it will alleviate the long recognised problem of lack of coaching staff. We have also applied for funding for risk management planning and have already made improvements in this area with a first aider at Rasey Park.

6 During the year we received funding for lights for field 10 at Downey Park and a lighting upgrade for Rasey Park.

In the next year we must move with the times and establish a presence on the internet with our own site, linked to club sites. Registrations and updates should be done electronically. All our fixture results should be kept on a computer ready to input to a web site. Also in the finance area we should improve our accountability and transparency by having budgets for each portfolio. Currently the budgeting process is below par. These ideas are merely scratching the surface of ideas using technology that can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Brisbane Women's Hockey Association.

This has been a successful year in that we achieved some things that have been planned for some years, notably the constitution, the joint club funding application and the joint marketing arrangements. We have also initiated negotiations with Hockey Queensland in respect to a student fee for full time students over the age of sixteen. In 2000, with the risk management strategy in place we will have a sound administrative base to challenge the next century.

Congratulations to all those who won premierships, selection in representative teams and umpiring badges. My thanks to the management team and to the Juniors most ably lead by Glenda Vearing. Also my thanks to the legion of workers who ensure that fixtures happen through thick and thin. I wish you all a relaxing summer and look forward to the 2000 hockey season.

Meg Brodie President

SECRETARY’S REPORT

Tuesday 25 October - The Annual General Meeting was well attended, with Life Members in attendance Judy Keen was presented with her 10 year service award. Gail Austen was named as our Patron for the 1999 season.

A Christmas get-together was held on Friday 20 November at Crushers to thank all the association workers.

Early in November, the new Management Committee got together to put in place strategies to cover the November/December/January period until the all day meeting on Saturday 16 January.

Summer Competitions were run by BWHA at the State Hockey Centre, these included 6-a-side, Masters and Mixed Competition on Thursday and Friday nights and were very successful.

At our all day meeting management decided because of the interruption during the 1999 season due to Brisbane hosting the Champions Trophy that all divisions except Division 1 would go to a 10-team competition (if practicable). As it worked out this was very beneficial also because we had one of the wettest hockey seasons I can remember.

7 The office staff were working overtime to get all the Administration Folders, forms and general information sheets ready to be handed out at the first Council Meeting on Tuesday 26 January. 19 Clubs affiliated to play the 1999 season totalling 92 teams.

Saturday 30 January at Toowoomba - the first game of the South East Queensland League. The League games were played at Toowoomba, Ipswich, Gold Coast, Redcliffe (Sunshine Coast) and the State Hockey Centre. The semis were in Toowoomba and the Grand Final in Brisbane. Toowoomba (Chill), Sunshine Coast (Warriors), Gold Coast (Gypsies), Ipswich (Top Guns), North Brisbane (Swifts) and the South Brisbane (Scorpions). South Brisbane (Scorpions) won the League beating the Toowoomba Chill. Thank you to all who participated and followed our Brisbane teams to the other centres to support and watch some great hockey.

Brisbane Management incorporated a new system of Umpire Warning Cards – 2 points for each Green Card, 4 points for Yellow Cards – to be totalled to 12 points, which would result in a 1-match suspension. This resulted in one young lady having a match holiday. Of course the Red Card still resulted in a judiciary visit. Thanks to the Judiciary Committee who only had to meet twice this year.

Also this year FIH had a new ruling on metal sticks and NO Talon sticks were to be used by BWHA players.

BWHA Uniforms and equipment are now stored in the clubhouse at Rasey Park, thus enabling all players and managers easy access.

FEBRUARY

Committees were formed to start the work towards the Champions Trophy, State Veterans Championship and the Golden Oldies Festival which were all held in Brisbane this year. 22 – 24 February – Games played between a Japanese team and the QAS, Swifts and Scorpions teams at the State Hockey Centre. Level 1 Umpires Coach Course was held on the weekend 27/28 February, with 15 members attending.

MARCH

28 Teams registered to compete in the Divisions 1 to 3 competitions. This year Division 2 had ten teams with Bulimba and Kedron Wavell joining the ranks. In Division 3, South Brisbane Eagles challenged to have their first season on turf and acquitted themselves very well. Ascot, Bulimba, Commercial, Easts, Kedron Wavell, Norths, Pine Rivers, St Andrews, South Brisbane Eagles, South West United, Valley and University commenced their fixtures with Div 1 on Friday 5 March, Div 3 on Sunday 7 March and Div 2 commencing the next Friday 12 March Friday 12 March the Hockey Queensland dinner was held at the Sheraton Hotel, Michele Arnold was presented with the Umpiring Award. Unfortunately BWHA did not win the overall Association (even though we won every major championship in 1998 – a feat no other centre has achieved). Open Nominations were in and the Selectors now faced the task of picking a team for the trip to Cairns. Sunday 14 March – Selection trials for Under 18 teams were held at SHC – 4 squads were selected. Sunday 21 March – Grading & Challenge games were held at Downey Park and Rasey Park.

8 Working bees were held at both Downey Park and Rasey Park – thank you to all clubs who supplied workers. At the Council meeting registration forms and half fees were paid to Brisbane. Level 1 Umpire Course for Badged and Experienced Umpires had 12 people attend and also a Level 1 Umpire Course for New or Novice Umpires, this was very encouraging with 21 attending.

Sadly Mavis Rowe resigned from Management, due to ill health. We hope to see Mavis back at Downey Park very soon.

The mowing at Downey and Rasey Parks was not up to scratch this year and so all clubs were asked to sign a petition to be sent to the Council to see if extra mows could be effected. Clubs were asked to pay a levy to cover the cost of the extra mowing, raking and removal of grass from the fields. Most clubs were in favour of this, as they didn’t have to come and spend their Sunday raking.

APRIL

Turf season continues smoothly, with games being held at Redcliffe and the SHC. Fixtures started at Downey Park on Saturday 10 April with 64 teams making DP1 to DP5 – 10 team divisions and DP6 having 9 teams with Veterans a five-team competition. Under 18 Championships was held in Rockhampton – Brisbane results - Brisbane 1 finished first, Brisbane 2 and Brisbane 3 both finished seventh in their respective grades.

MAY

Open Championships were held in Cairns and Brisbane 1 finished third. Full results are in the Record Section of this report. BWHA received sponsorship from the canteen at SHC and a club roster was implemented to man the facility on Friday evenings, Saturday and Sundays when fixtures were being played. Wet weather continued, with games being postponed. Oceania Challenge played as a lead up to the Champions Trophy- May 13-16, causing another disruptions to the turf fixtures.

JUNE

Champions Trophy held at SHC from 10 June – great hockey with both the Australian Women and Men’s teams winning GOLD. A meeting with Division 1 Coaches to discuss postponing fixtures when the National Under 21s and NWHL were being held. The meeting decided to go ahead during the Under 21s but would try and move the games when the NWHL was on, even though some clubs were badly affected. Fixtures back to normal for a few weeks. President Cup winners were announced. The team at the top of the points table would be awarded the trophy as there was no time to play the games.

After the Champions Trophy, meetings for the Golden Oldies Hockey Festival (GOHF) Committee were well underway. Robin, our coordinator was meeting with Events Queensland and Air New Zealand representatives to ensure the smooth running and organisation of the event which has attracted over 1000 overseas players and many more from within . The only thing being left to chance is the weather and the committee is on bended knees praying for sunny, dry days and nights in October.

JULY

On Saturday 3 July a Fundraising evening was held by the BWHA Veterans players to support our players who were named in the Queensland teams. A great night was held by all who attended. Veterans State Titles were held in Brisbane on a very wet weekend. A lot of the games were cancelled and on Sunday only the games for first and second and relegation were played. Brisbane 1 and Brisbane 6 won their respective divisions. BWHA had a large number of players picked to represent Queensland at the National Titles.

AUGUST Because of wet weather earlier in the season, we had two double headers, so the season could finish on time. Minor Premiers and Presidents Cup winners were announced at Downey Park on Saturday 15 August All winning clubs were presented with their shields and a bottle of champagne.

SEPTEMBER

BWHA Annual Awards Dinner was held at Kedron Wavell Services Club. A great night was enjoyed by all that attended. Thank you to Judy Howard our MC for the evening and also to Robin Roberts and Marilyn Chatfield for organising such a wonderful event. Allyson Skuse did a great job with the slide presentation. The winners for the evening were – Sarah Rylands BWHA Presidents Trophy Winner Sarah Rylands Players’ Player Hayley Phipps Rookie of the Year Teresa Kuss Division 2 Best & Fairest Patricia Guillesser Division 3 Best & Fairest Donna Baillie Division 3 Best & Fairest tied result Michele Arnold Highest Umpiring Achievement (Heather Scraggs Shield) Nikki Taylor Highest Coaching Achievement (Jan Hadfield Shield) Wendy Alcorn Highest Representative Honours (Pam Glossop Shield) Congratulations to all the above winners. Grand Finals at Downey Park on Saturday 11 were under a weather cloud early in the day. The afternoon went ahead without a drop of rain. One game went into extra time and a penalty goal shootout. Congratulations to all teams who won their final and commiseration to the teams who were runners-up. The Turf Finals were once again run in conjunction with BHA at the State Hockey Centre on Saturday 18 September. Division 3 won by Valley 3-Player of the Final–Rowena McKinnon (V) Division 2 won by Valley 2-Player of the Final – Hayley Aitkin (V) Division 1 won by Commercial 1 -Player of the Final – Suzie Faulkner (C) This was the first time Commercial has won a Division 1 Grand Final. Congratulations! On Monday 20 September, BWHA lost one of our Life Members Mrs Euphemia McDougall OAM. Mrs Mac will be sadly missed at Downey Park, as she usually spent Saturday afternoons watching the games on Field 1 from the control room, this she continued until mid August. 10

OCTOBER

The clubhouse has been repainted and the pavers have been repaved to enhance the overall appearance of the BWHA premises. National Veterans Championship was held in Brisbane from 15 October to 23 October, congratulations to all the Brisbane players and officials who participated in this event. Week of 25 – 30 October and the Golden Oldies are being held at Downey Park. Congratulations to Robin Roberts and her team of helpers for all their hard work in getting the clubhouse, field’s etc into such wonderful condition for this event.

Overall, I would like to say that this year has been a very hard year. Thank you to the Grounds Committee, under the watchful eye of Jenny Tidey, a very stressful year with so much wet weather, but on the whole the fields held up. Thanks to John Bigg for all the little extras he does around the park.

The office at BWHA was once again run very professionally, but sadly Alyson Skuse resigned after 18 months, good luck Allyson in your future endeavours, I hope your new job is very rewarding and challenging. Thanks to Marilyn and Alison for their Saturday work which left both Junior and Senior Management free to be out on the park. Also thanks to Kathy for all her work, help and general demeanour in keeping the office running smoothly. Hope to see you back on two feet next year.

To all the Committees that help with the smooth running of BWHA, thank you and hope to see you back again next year. The Constitution Committee has had a busy year updating our constitution, thank you to Keith Tidey and his band of workers for the many hours you have spent covering this. The Junior Management Committee has once again had a successful year and I hope to see you in 2000 for an even better year.

Lyn Thomas for all her knowledge and commitment to BWHA, without you I don’t know where we’d be, a very grateful thank you.

The Management team, another good year, your support and help has been greatly appreciated. To my fellow table committee, thank you this year has been interesting.

A special thank you to the team of workers who worked so tirelessly on the State Veterans Championship and the Golden Oldies – Ruth Grim, Liz Grimes, Faye Wastell, Ronda Nix, Helen Hill, Rhonda Bentley, Bev Broadfoot, John Bigg, the Management committee – just to name a few. Thank you.

To the incoming BWHA personnel, I hope it’s a drier, smoother, less interrupted season and you can get down to the general running of hockey for all our Brisbane players.

Thank you to the clubs and their players for their friendly consideration during this trying year. Hopefully I haven’t forgotten to thank everyone, if I have please take this as my personal thanks.

Please have a safe and happy off season and see you again in 2000.

My report always has to be written before the end of our financial year so it is not possible to present the final figures until the A.G.M. on 26.10.99. A fully audited set of accounts will be presented and distributed at the B.W.H.A. Annual General Meeting.

I wish to sincerely thank all committees for their cooperation in assisting to contain expenditure and to thank all clubs for their cooperation and courtesy throughout the season.

It has been a terrible season with the break for Champions Trophy Tournament and the rain. We have still managed to show fair-trading in both canteens (at Downey Park and Rasey Park). Thank you Liz Lobb and Caroline Schomberg (Bar Downey Park) and Des O’Connor and Hayley Chatfield (and all the other workers in the 2 canteens). Special thanks to Kath and Dave for their assistance in the ordering and stocking of the D.P. canteen.

Jim Northcott once again has done an excellent job in the Hockey Shop and as I have stated before it is not easy to maintain profits when competing with the big outlets. Jim is working on a few new ideas for the next season.

The canteen at Colmslie, which promised “Great Things” in the way of Sponsorship was not a huge success as some clubs, did not cooperate and could not see the benefits to the Association rather than to individual clubs. This was a huge disappointment to some of us that worked so hard to obtain and retain this important sponsorship. The “deal” is not completely dead and we are still hopeful it can still be salvaged.

The rent for the Downey Park playing fields will be rising from $1200 a year to $6000 next year eventually going to $7500. There is nothing we can do about this as we have had numerous meetings regarding this expense – to no avail.

John Bigg has done a tremendous job with the fields again this year and hopefully John is “Back on Board” for next season. It is extremely difficult to get the fields to the condition we would like as we only get 2 or 3 weeks in between the 2 seasons (Hockey and Softball).

Our major outlay this year will be the purchase of a new mower for $18000.00 (after trading in our old mower). This mower is a vast improvement on our old one as it will actually pick up the grass and not leave it on the fields as in the past. We have also set up Rasey Park as our Uniform Store and purchased 4 new cupboards to store the uniforms. We also did some renovations in the Downey Park clubhouse and will be painting inside and outside the clubhouse in October 1999. The installation of 13 fans in the clubhouse should make summer more bearable. We were fortunate to receive a grant from the Government to upgrade the field lighting at Rasey Park and this will be completed by December 1999.

Schweppes and Streets are still supporting our Association in various ways and I thank them sincerely.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to BWHA Management for their support throughout the year and it would be remiss of me if I did not single out Kathy Duggan and Allyson Skuse for suffering me for another season. Especially Kathy as she has the job of producing the monthly and annual figures in the form of computer printouts that enables us “Mere Mortals” to do our job. Thanks Kathy.

14 Lastly, and this is really nothing to do with being Treasurer, I would like to say “Thank You” to all the Turf teams that were so cooperative and courteous during the season, and I really mean it.

I hope to see you all again next year. Have a safe and Happy Christmas. All the best for 2000.

SPONSORSHIP AND MARKETING REPORT

GROUNDS COMMITTEE REPORT

1999 will be remembered for its wonderful Champions Trophy, it’s rain and the long grass.

Before Christmas we had Rasey Park, Field 13 and field 1 aerated, top dressed and fertilized. In February, with QWASC financial assistance the rest of Downey Park was prepared as well. This gave us a rich thick green grass to commence fixtures, however it also caused big grass cutting problems. With the grass not being kept short in Softball season, we had trouble with the grass clippings. We had to employ a contractor who spent 2 days cutting with a large dump bin on his mower so that hockey could be played with safety.

Once again Cricket was played on Rasey Park in the off season. The clubhouse upstairs was turned into a uniform home instead of taking up half of both dressing rooms in the Downey Park clubhouse.

Michael, our graffiti professional painted the Hockey Shop, First Aid Room, Umpires Room, Work Shed and Lady Groom Shelter after the locals had done their unattractive artwork everywhere.

2 sets of nets were built at the beginning of the season and 3 old nets were given to Bald Hills School where they were restored and used for Primary School hockey.

Our usual working bees at Rasey and Downey Parks were well attended and if organized a lot of volunteer help can be done on these days.

In 1999 we turned Rasey Park into 3 full size fields, relocating the Minkey and Modified to Granville St. Our groundsman marked 2 Minkey fields near field 10, and 4 modified on fields 10 and 12. We stored our Minkey nets in the shed near field 10 after a roller door was put in.

The 3 weeks rest with the Championship Trophy gave the fields a rest and kept the grass in reasonable condition. No frost in the winter meant the finals were played on grass instead of a lot of dust.

The fields at Downey Park are continually dropping and a lot of leveling is required. A plan for this has to be made with Softball’s help to level and rest one field at a time.

BWHA mower needs a lot of repairs so we have decided on a new “second hand” mower. In future you’ll be seeing John driving a classy mower with a dump bin, so hopefully grass mowing and raking won’t be the problem it has been in recent years.

15 The paving in front of the clubhouse has to be redone, as with the fill sinking the pavers are becoming dangerous. This organized to start shortly. The 3 hockey grandstands in front of field 1 have been repaired with aluminum seating.

At the end of October the Golden Oldies will be played on 11 fields at Downey Park where we expect nearly 1,500 players will enjoy hockey and friendship over 3 days.

Our grateful thanks once again go to John Bigg, our part time groundsman. Without his help I don’t know how we could continue to play on Downey Park as BCC don’t do all the mowing maintenance they did 5 years ago. John also does a lot of the maintenance work on both the Downey and Rasey Park clubhouses. Thanks John from all the hockey girls.

Thanks also to Bev Broadfoot who takes annual holidays to help John get the fields marked in such a short time to commence the season. Also thanks to Bruce Oakhill who gave many hours of his time repairing, painting and shifting nets. Caroline Schomberg and Amanda Higgs are also thanked for their help. Mary Cockings also liaisoned with the BCC Departments and watched my budget with her eagle eyes.

I’m hoping to retire from the Grounds Committee in the next 12 months so I’m looking for someone to co-ordinate the maintenance of the grounds – are you available?

Thanks to anyone else who has assisted me during the last season. I enjoy your company.

Jenny Tidey Convenor.

FIXTURE AND GRADING COMMITTEE REPORT

TURF

We all knew that 1999 was going to be a disruptive season on turf with Champions Trophy, Veterans State Championships, Men’s Oceania, NHL and NWHL being played at the State Hockey Centre.

BWHA introduced a ten-team competition in Division 2 after a successful trial in Division 3 last year. Division 1 remained with the eight-team competition playing three rounds and both Divisions 2 and 3 only playing two rounds.

In addition the fixture and grading committee adjusted fixtures around the State Open, Under 18 and QSSSA Championships also National Under 21 and Under 18 Championships. BWHA and BHA came to an agreement when the State Hockey Centre was booked by Men’s Championships, women’s fixtures would be scheduled at Redcliffe, and although complaints were made by clubs about the Redcliffe surface, at least our fixtures were able to continue.

Pine Rivers 1 and Kedron Wavell 2 were the only clubs to apply to be upgraded so they were automatically elevated to Division 2.

Grading games were played for Division 3 on Sunday 21 st of February in the form of a mini carnival from 4 p.m. till 7 p.m. With St Andrews withdrawing from Division 3 and two clubs promoted to Division 2, 16 this left three placings available in Division 3. Four clubs contested for these placings, so grading games were played between Pine Rivers 2, Kedron Wavell 3, Bulimba 2 and a new turf club South Brisbane Eagles. After grading Pine Rivers 2 were unsuccessful with their request for Division 3.

The Monday Masters competition started on the 12 th April and is still going. It should be completed in November. Maybe this is a sign for things to come.

Presidents Cup was once again not played as a separate final, the team placed first at the end of the first round won this trophy. Congratulations to all Minor Premiers and Premiers and thank all clubs for their patience throughout the season. The Olympic year could be similar to this one so be prepared.

I wish to thank Jenny Heron, Robyn Andersen and Lisa Jones for their time, knowledge and sense of humour. I would also like to thank Lyn Thomas for her valuable input and BWHA Management for their support.

CONSTITUTION COMMITTEE REPORT

At long last I can report the completion of the rewrite and upgrade of the Rules of Association (Constitution) and By-Laws.

The new rules are in final preparation with discussions with the Clubs as to certain rules and applications. We are hopeful the changes and passing of the new document will be carried out at the Annual General Meeting or if not very soon after. The new document will then be forwarded to the Department of Fair Trading for registration and when so done the new formats can be carried out at another Annual General Meeting to fill the new positions designations.

The rewritten By-Laws is draft completed but several queries and changes have been received from Clubs needing further actions. These will be continued on the finalization of the new Rules. These changes, etc. will be completed with consultation from all Clubs when required in the New Year.

I would like to thank my fellow Committee members, Mary Cockings, Sue Anderson, and Ronda Nix with President Meg Brodie (ex-officio) for all the help, co-operation and assistance given in the past year on the tremendous task now nearing full completion.

I wish the new Committee all the success needed to complete thew final tasks we were unable to complete in the past year.

Keith Tidey Convenor.

DOWNEY PARK CANTEEN REPORT

17

This year I was not in charge on Saturdays so I really should have handed this responsibility over to those who were. However this has been my final year of involvement with the BWHA I am taking this opportunity to say goodbye to all the people my husband and I have met. We also wish to thank every one who has helped out in the canteen over the years and we both wish the BWHA and everyone connected with it all the best for the Future.

Kathy & Blue Kenealy Canteen Convenors

SOCIAL SECRETARY REPORT

As the position of social secretary has been taken out of the new constitution, this will probably be the last report that will be written-at least by me. Over the years I have enjoyed doing the catering for BWHA and I would like to thank all the people who have helped in any way, but a special thanks must go to Lyn Thomas and Jenny Tidey who always made and donated a tremendous supply of slices and scones over the years. It has been my very great pleasure to have made afternoon tea for the very delightful Life Members sometimes (at QE.II and Comslie) under very trying circumstances. I hope to see these ladies back at Downey Park in the year 2000 especially the ones who aren’t very well at the moment.

Joyce Proctor

EQUIPMENT & UNIFORMS SECRETARY REPORT

Once again we had a very busy season with so many teams going away within a short period of time.

All of the uniforms and equipment are now stored at Rasey Park, and while it makes the storing of the uniforms a lot easier we have to re-educate the players into coming to Rasey Park to be outfitted regardless of whether they play at Downey Park or Colmslie, it is practically impossible to match uniforms to players just by looking at a list.

We may not be able to keep the new tracksuits as the “strips” were made in Western Australia and we do not know if we can have them reproduced in Queensland. We hope to expand our range of merchandise next year possibly including a water proof jacket - mainly for the juniors depending on sales interest by the players. My thanks to the managers who helped me, but please remember that all uniforms and equipment must come back clean.

MATCH SECRETARY REPORT

It seems that disrupted seasons and wet weather are becoming the norm for our Hockey Association.

1999 proved to be a very disjointed hockey season with planned breaks for Champions Trophy, the State Veterans Championship and National Women’s Hockey League games combined with a number of unplanned interruptions due to wet weather providing more than a few headaches for administrators, coaches and players alike. However, with the understanding and cooperation of most Clubs, all fixture games were completed in time for semi-finals and finals to be played as scheduled. Sincere apologies are proffered to the Downey Park Veterans for the confusion surrounding their amended fixture draw. All endeavours will be made to ensure that this does not occur in year 2000. Thank you to all for your forbearance during those hectic weekends prior to the semi-finals.

As in 1998, most Divisions were closely contested with only three minor premiers confirmed by the third last week of fixtures and positions in the final four or five being decided on the last fixture game.

Congratulations must go to both the Turf and Grass Fixture & Grading Committees for a very difficult task well performed. Many thanks also to June Snarski for once again keeping us on time at Downey park and to Mary Cockings for controlling the State Hockey Centre and Redcliffe fixtures and to Joyce Proctor for her continuing efforts to keep our Monday Masters on the correct path.

UMPIRE’S STEWARD REPORT

Once again, the quantity and quality of umpires caused much discussion but very little positive action. As in previous years, the failure of many Clubs to initiate umpire training programs to supplement courses run by BWHA has left a gaping chasm in our umpiring stock.

To all umpires who officiated regularly (many every week or every second week) I wish to express a heartfelt thank you for making my job a little easier. Again our major problem lay in the substitution of umpires with many Clubs not ensuring replacement umpires were of a similar or higher standard.

Special thanks to June Snarski for ensuring that all games at Downey Park have umpires and run on time.

JUNIOR PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Well, 1999 was a very interesting year. We have had the opportunity to see hockey at International, National and State levels. Some of our players had the opportunity to ball girl at “Champions Trophy” and meet some of the Australian and International players, an interesting experience for them all.

We had five representatives in the successful Queensland Secondary School Girls Team taking part in the Australian Secondary Schools Titles in Adelaide. Recently we sent two Development Teams to Sydney to the Invitational U16 Division 2 Tournament, a tournament that Brisbane has now won for two consecutive years. Though attending this tournament we develop not only players but also umpires, coaches and managers, and I would like to thank Sharon Simpson for the work that she has done in development over the past two years. Thanks also go to the Development Squad Committee that has worked continuously on fund raising ventures to help make these development trips possible.

Minkey Modified is a very important development section of our association and is great fun to watch brings us all back to what we are all about and that is the kids. I sincerely thank Kathryn McMurtrie as Minkey Modified Co-ordinator, for the time and effort she dedicated to this very import section of out association. We are aware of the time involved gaining sponsors for the sample bags at the end of the season and can assure Kathryn that the players appreciated the effort as well. A job well done Kathryn.

Brisbane is currently a successful association; we have some very talent players, through all age’s groups. A large number of these players do not take part in representative hockey, as it is personal choice, however they do enjoy their involvement in the local competition. They deserve the opportunity to play in a competition that is competently organised. This should be enough motivation for parents to step forward and offer to take on some responsibilities for the development of this association, unfortunately this is not the case. As time progress the lack of support from parents will start to show and if we are to continue as a force in Hockey we need to turn this trend around the support of clubs and that of the PARENTS is vital to our future.

We commenced the year without a Junior committee and Senior Management had to get the wheels in motion until a committee could be formed. I would like to thank Mary Cocking, Jenny Heron for the extra hours they put in. 38

We had a few minor problems that were overcome during the year and I do thank those clubs that brought these concerns to management. Because there were so few of us this year the workload asked of Management was higher than would be asked under normal circumstances. I would like to thank Patti Thorpe, Marg Tupper, Deslie Thorpe, Glenda Street, and Alison Aleksic for the work they did and the support they gave during the 1999 season. I must point out that the appointment of administration support for Saturdays made a difficult situation at lot easier to manage and again I would like to thank Marilyn and Alison for the effort made.

Glenda Street after seven years on Junior Management is taking a break, I would like to point out the workload taken on by Glenda was far above that asked, but when you don’t get the required support existing members have to take on an extra load. Glenda thankyou for doing this year after year and we do appreciate the sacrifices made.

I think that we managed to get through 1999 fairly successfully all things considered, we had some fun and pulled out a few hairs, drank a lot of coffee and went through a few reams of paper.

But things must get easier and for that to happen we need the support of parents, not those parent that are currently involved with the running of clubs but the support of those parent that are not involved, the more support we get the easier it is for all. So if you can spare some time no matter how little please let us know and we can delegate a task to you that will easy the load for all concerned. GOOD LUCK FOR 2000

Glenda Vearing Junior Section President.

JUNIOR SECRETARY REPORT

JUNIOR TREASURER’S REPORT

Having retired from my position as Junior Treasurer at the end of last season, the last thing I expected to be doing right now was writing another annual report. However. After much persuasion from Mary and others, here I am again.

This year for the first time, we issued individual invoices giving a breakdown of costs to Under 13 and Under 15 representative players. Although I’ve had little feedback I would like to see this continue as I think parents are happy to pay if they can see how their money is being used.

Financially it has been a disappointing year. As we rely on profits from the Hockey Shop as our main source of income, A Mart’s exclusive sale conducted at the Champions Trophy tournament was, I feel, the major factor in the 35% reduction in sales. The other of course was the weather. Many thanks go to the clubs and players who did support the hockey shop throughout the season.

The downturn in profit from the shop was compounded by a blowout in tour costs – a timely warning to future committees to be fully informed as to exactly what services and facilities are being offered and I recommend that team managers be briefed before touring. The end result is that after all expenses, we were lucky to break even this year. 39

On the up side, there was only 1 forfeit fine and none for card errors. This has been unheard of in my time on management, so well done to all those team managers. Sadly umpiring fines were up a little on last years figures (25 umpiring and 2 late fines). Surprisingly most were at the end of the season and in the higher divisions so there’s still a little way to go before we get a perfect record there.

This definitely will be my final report for Junior Management, I once again would like to thank all members of both junior and senior committees for their support, friendship and good humour and to those of you continuing on the year 2000, I wish you many helping hands and blue skies.

Glenda Street Hon Treasurer

MINKEY/MODIFIED REPORT

On the whole, and despite the many setbacks encountered, I believe the Minkey and Modified season for 1999 has been a success. The following is a summary of the season.

TEAMS

The season started with 7 Minkey and 20 Modified teams. The addition of a second Valley Minkey team a few weeks into the season brought the numbers to 8 Minkey and 20 Modified teams. This was a good number, as there were no byes in the draw. There was one pool of Minkey teams, and three pools of Modified teams. Initially, the Modified teams were not graded. However, it was apparent that there were significant differences in the skill levels of teams, so grading was necessary. The grading was based on the results of the first three weeks. The final pools were as follows:

Minkey Modified 1 Arana Ascot Arana Ascot Commercial Bulimba Easts Easts Black Kedron Wavell Kedron Wavell Pine Rivers Norths 1 Saint Andrews Pine Hills Valley 1 South West United Blue Valley 2 Valley Blue

Modified 2 Modified 3 Easts Yellow Commercial Moreton Bay Bugs Moreton Bay Bees Norths 2 Norths 3 Saint Andrews Blue Saint Andrews White South West United Orange South West United White Valley White Valley Red

40 FIELDS

Over the course of the season, I had very positive feedback regarding the change of the Minkey and Modified games from Rasey Park to Downey Park. However, for next season, I suggest that the following issues be considered:

1) Many people were concerned that full field games were being played in the middle of the Minkey and Modified area. Although the ball trap was used where possible, the Minkey and Modified girls were still placed in a dangerous situation. I am aware that fields are in high demand, however on several occasions young girls were injured as a result of this situation. I suggest that next year you might consider one of the two following options:

a) have the far side of Downey Park for the exclusive use of the Minkey and Modifieds on Saturday Mornings - or –

b) make field 11 available for Minkey and Modified games, and move the full field games to field 12. (This would mean that the Minkey and Modified games do not surround the full field games.)

2) Also, having to construct and dismantle the goals each week was a very tedious job. Although there was a roster put out for parent helpers, the teams rostered on “set-up” duty often didn’t arrive. If at all possible, it would be much better if the goals could remain assembled from week to week. This may be possible if the second shed on the far side of the park was made available for use.

DISRUPTIONS TO THE SEASON

Unfortunately, due to the champion’s trophy and persistent wet weather, the season was very disjointed. These setbacks meant that on several occasions, and for long periods of time, the girls were not able to play hockey. I tried to solve this problem by scheduling make up games.

SKILLS TEST

As a result of the disruptions throughout the season, it was necessary to cancel the skills day as an organisation. Instead of doing the skills test together, as in previous years, each club did the test at training, so that the week originally scheduled for the skills day could be used to play make-up games. I believe this was a successful way to do the skills test.

It should be noted that it was necessary to change the scoring scheme for the distribution of ribbons. Under the scheme outlined in the book published by the Australian Hockey Association, to achieve the highest award (red), the player needs to score 100% in each of the five tests.

41 The results of the skills test and amendments to the marking scheme are as follows:

Modified Minkey Out of 25 Out of 20 Score

PRESENTATION DAY

On the last fixture day for the Minkey and Modified season, short presentations were held after each time slot. At these presentations, the girls were presented with the ribbons from the skills test results, and a show bag. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the people who helped organise donations for these bags.

HOCKEY SHOP REPORT

The Downey Park Hockey Shop is operated on behalf of the Junior Division of BWHA. The aim of the Hockey Shop is to provide: ••• Top quality hockey equipment at competitive prices; ••• General service and advice on hockey equipment; and ••• Income for the junior division of BWHA.

During the 1999 season, we believe we have achieved these aims.

In respect of prices for the equipment on offer, favourable terms were negotiated with various suppliers. We then set price margins that assured our customers the best retail prices in Brisbane.

For the year 2000, we are seeking to expand our “factory direct” supplies. The result will be even better prices for our customers.

In terms of service, we were able to help many customers with repairs to their equipment, and respond to requests for specialist and specialised hockey equipment. Because of our arrangements with suppliers, we were able to fulfill customers’ orders within one or two weeks, and save them some dollars on normal retail prices. These services will operate again in the 2000 season.

43 We continue to expand our extensive range of hockey equipment catalogues, and hope our customers will make even greater use of this service next season.

Funds raised by the Hockey Shop are used to promote, develop and support young hockey players. Last year’s report stated the contribution for the 1998 season was just $3,500. The actual audited amount was $4109.00. (Sorry my mistake!!.)

The surplus (net profit) for the first half of the 1999 season was reasonable. For the second half of the 1999 season, there is bad news and good news. The bad news is because of very poor weather during July and August, and some confusion about which hockey sticks are likely to be banned next year, sales since 1 July are down by 50%. The audited final figure for 1999 was a surplus of $3530.00.

The good news is that the Hockey Shop will be open for the Golden Oldies Festival in October. Therefore, the figures for the financial year ending 30.9.2000 will hopefully show a vast improvement on the 1999 results.

I would like to thank all executive members and staff of BWHA for their cooperation, support and advice during the 1999 season.

I would like to thank the clubs for providing “volunteers” to assist in the shop during the season. Thank you to our customers, players, their families and friends. You have all contributed to the fun of doing something to contribute to the great sport of Hockey.

The shop is ready for business for the year 2000 season. You want hockey equipment at the right price, just call me. Place you club and individual orders early, and the shop will provide.

CAPS REPORT

With no official coordinator of CAPS in 1999 very few new registrations were recorded which is a worry as the training our young people receive in this program benefits themselves, their clubs and BWHA. I attended a seminar with the Dept of Sport and other sports who have CAPS. This was a valuable day but emphasised the restructuring that is happening at the top and this restructuring has had an impact on the processing of Certificates which has demanding numerous phone calls throughout the year. Hopefully the restructuring will be complete next year and CAPS will run a little more smoothly.

Having said this the girls in the program who did complete steps were again invaluable to our association and I am sure their clubs. I would like to thank Kathy & Jo Argent for their enthusiasm in taking over the running of the Under 11 Southern Cross for CAPS while I was incapacitated. They did a great job and again our CAPS Participants showed the great value they are to our association. Jolene has written a number of recommendations for next year that I hope the Junior Management Committee and the new CAPS coordinator takes on board to further improve the already successful U11 Southern Cross.

Our CAPS Participants continue to have a major impact on BWHA with the tradition of a CAPS participant working for their Sports Leader Award running our Minkey and Modified Competition. This has never been an easy task and when reminded that the past five Minkey & Modified supervisors have

44 been under 21 years of age it is timely to remember the value of the CAPS program. Kathryn McMurtrie did an exceptional job in this capacity this year. The weather, the champions trophy and the change of venue all adding problems to an already difficult job, but Kathryn showed her maturity and organisational capabilities and should be congratulated on an outstanding effort.

Two other participants worked towards their Sports Leader Awards this year Jolene Argent and Pamela Bolton both performed a valuable service to BWHA and their clubs and should be congratulated on their efforts.

New participants this year Kara Stanton and Jaimie Smith completed their Step 1 in 1999.

I hope that the position of CAPS coordinator can be filled in 2000. The program is invaluable. I am happy to help anyone who would like to take the position on, it is not over time consuming but is of great benefit to our association and clubs.

JUNIOR UMPIRES REPORT:

The year began with forty-five (45) nominations of people who wished to be tested for their Brisbane Junior Umpires Badge and four (4) for their Brisbane Intermediate Umpires Badge. This leads to the first problem of trying to accommodate all these with at least three (3) practical tests.

Thanks must go to the following people who helped me in testing the candidates. Jo Argent helped me every week with testing which I am most grateful. Rosanna Pappalardo and Catherine Costello helped on a fortnightly basis. Kathy Duggan and Caroline Schomberg helped whenever they could or when I desperately needed another person.

The nominations closed to find that there were more than enough applicants to go to the Under 13 and 15 State Championships. This lead to a selection process over two (2) weeks at the trials of the Under 13 and 15 Brisbane teams. This was most beneficial for both players and umpires.

Jo Argent, Kassie Tupper and Lucinda Hollitt went to the Under 13 Championships at Buderim to obtain their Queensland Junior Umpires Badge. All three (3) were successful in gaining this award even though the championship was abandoned due to rain. Fiona Chatfield, Louise Woodford and Lauren Harten went to the Under 15 Championship in Gladstone. Fiona and Louise both obtained their Queensland Senior Umpires Badge while Lauren obtained her Queensland Junior Umpires Badge,

There were a few umpiring complaints at both Downey Park and at The State Hockey Centre (Colmslie). These were due to clubs allocating umpires to games that were to high for the umpire's ability. There were also clubs that sent girls to umpire games with a friend that was not capable of helping. It is the clubs responsibility to help and train their beginning umpires until they are at a suitable level to be by themselves.

A Junior Umpire's Exam was set for all representative players and people being tested for their umpire's badge. This was due to be completed over one (1) weekend at the end of July. However this weekend was washed out due to the conditions of the fields so it was postponed to mid August. It was also asked if all clubs could try to encourage all U13A, J1 and J2 players in their clubs to participate at a club training. The tests were to be marked by the clubs with results sent to the Downey Park Office.

The standard of umpires for semifinals and finals was high and I would like to thank all of them for their professionalism and the time they gave.

Congratulations to the seventeen (17) people who received their Brisbane Junior Umpires Badge. Congratulations to Louise Woodford for receiving the Vicki Spice Memorial Shield. Congratulations to Kylie Jones for being named the Most Improved Junior Umpire.

I would like to thank everyone who umpired this year and I hope that you continue to improve and learn as you umpire in the future.
