The path has been laid with the completion of the By-laws. The planning for additional staff in the areas of administration and coaching to meet these changes will need to occur in the coming years. Things simply cannot stay the same and that is simply that. The groundwork for new technology, equipment and a website has been investigated this year and the fruits of this will be seen in the coming season of 2002. Early in our season saw the sudden loss of Paul Morgan. Paul was the chairman of our State Hockey Centre and Legends Community Sporting Club Boards. His support of our centre and to the game of hockey was enormous. He was a remarkable man who will be missed by all who knew him. An area of contention this year was “Umpiring”, yes that dirty word. The formula new look “Umpires Club” will be launched in 2002. The purpose of this club is to provide training, support and mentoring to all. My thanks to those who have given their knowledge and support to make a start on a project that will not be easy, but will be worthwhile in the long run. The Southern Cross Hockey League again ran successfully at the start of the season. This pre season competition is now a tradition and proudly supported by many players, coaches and the centres that make up the South East Queensland region. Brisbane Women’s Hockey, unfortunately, did not host a state championship this year and there are no plans for this in the future. It is a great shame and a dishonour to the tradition and history of our Association that we are penalised because we are in the capital city of a state and this we should all work together to change. On another note, our financial guarantee in the State Hockey Centre was increased this year and again we agreed and signed. We again ran a large summer competition in six-a-side, veterans and mixed. This gave more people a chance to play at our State Hockey Centre, this also gives a big boost to their revenue. The challenge for our sport is sponsorship and media attention, we had the continued support of our valued sponsors – Schweppes, Country Bake, Streets and Vampire Hockey Equipment. Grants from the Brisbane City Council and the State Government were a lynch pin in projects that were conducted this year – many thanks and we look forward to your continued support. Media, this is a hard arena, you only have to look at the last six pages of the Sunday paper to see the challenge we face. With planning and the assistance of several media contacts we will look forward to having a designated person next year to be our contact for all forms of press. Development is an area that has had much discussion this year and I note this from previous reports back to 1997. We will be appointing a Regional Development Officer to recruit players and keep the numbers up. This position will also assist with the training and education of umpires. I must give my personal thanks to our Regional Coaching Director – Sharyn Simpson whose knowledge and insight into the best we can give our players and sport is greatly appreciated. 6 At the end of our season we lost a Life Member with the passing of Ruby Robinson. A great women and a tireless worker for women's sport and hockey in particular. Her dedication and passion for the game of hockey will be greatly missed by all that knew her. I thank Judy Howard who had worked with Ruby for her contribution to this sport. Thank you to our Administration Team, led by Kathy Duggan, Carly Vincenzi and Amber Sharman. Your dedication and perseverance has not passed unnoticed. Thank you to Ronda Nix, Keith and Jenny Tidey for your expert guidance and encouragement over the year. To the Management Team thank you for the year. To the new comers, I hope you have seen the ‘engine’ room running – but not at full steam! As the biggest Association in Queensland, Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association has an astonishing number of outstanding sports people on and off the field. It is difficult to say thank you when there are so many people to thank….
