This summary of the service rendered by Lena Dobbin to woman's hockey does little justice to the energetic and capable person who steered the Association through the war years, later to take its place in the forefront of the Queensland Association. She may, however, rest proudly on her record of achievement, which is stamped indelibly in official annals and fondly remembered by her associates at the time.

By natural extension, her leadership qualities came to light in a number of ways, notably as Producer of the annual hockey revue, supporter of the Dig for Victory Movement after its founding by the late Dos Hansford (nee Drouyn), The Patriotic Fund of , the original Women's Sport Appeal (now QWASC), and latterly, The Australian Red Cross Society.

With an eye for local talent and its encouragement, she brought many a shy performer to the footlights in hockey revues, and resultantly to a mutual sharing of the joy and laughter for which these concerts were noted.

"Dig for Victory" meant fresh supplies of locally produced vegetables for military hospitals, steady donations of jams and other items, hospital visiting, food parcelling and last, but not least, comradeship. Lena describes herself as a very ordinary hockey player, usually to be found on Neptune's right wing, waiting for passes which came but seldom and were invariably missed when they did.

Hockey umpire, administrator and key organiser - Lena recalls her time spent with woman's hockey as "wonderfully happy and productive years".

Thank you Lena Dobbin

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

As my first season as President comes to a close I take a moment to sit back and reflect on the past year. Unsure of what I had got myself in for I soon realised that only a very small number of volunteers and minimal paid staff allows the association to run, it has been a huge learning curve. I have thanked these people on numerous occasions and I will continue to thank them in years to come. But what is the best way of saying thank you as a member of our association would be to volunteer to help these people – lighten the load. With our world evolving into a time precious society it is imperative that we have more people joining the team and spreading out the jobs.

The season was a good one for BWHA as we came away with all Division one Hockey Queensland Championships bar the Veterans and U13‟s. This obviously is the result of hard work by the development department led by Liz O‟Connor, junior and senior selectors, coaches and the players. Congratulations to all involved.

BWHA is about playing hockey and the fixtures are always a major part of the services the association provides. We had bumper numbers again, with many more teams wanting to be on the turf than space available. It was pleasing to see the hard work of our Competitions and Grading Committees being validated by the results. Congratulations to Jenny Heron and her committees on the excellent results.

The finals this year displayed a cross section of many of our clubs. Of the 12 Senior Finals contested winners came from 10 of the 17 Senior Clubs. This is encouraging for the future development of our association and allows many clubs to celebrate finals success. Congratulations to all teams for their commitment and enthusiasm throughout the year. Of course there would be no finals if records are not kept – a special thanks to Lyn Thomas our extraordinary “Match Secretary” for all her hard work and expertise during the year.

Also to our Technical Officials and Umpires who allow our games to proceed, they often do not get thanked, but know that you are valued members of our association, without you we would be lost. Special thanks to Sonya Fisher and Meg Brodie for their work in this area, I am sure they will acknowledge the many people who assisted them in their reports that follow.

Our Juniors continue to grow and fully utilise all facilities we have. Desley Mackay and her band of hard working committee members, ensure the junior section remains vibrant and dynamic. Well done everyone in the Junior Section.

BWHA‟s home at Downey Park is undergoing many changes, the Brisbane City Council has continued to lend great support to our facilities we thank them for this. The QWASC is also about to wind down with separate leases to be held by Netball, Softball and Hockey. All this negotiating and planning has fallen to Mary Cockings and Bronwyn Morris, they have worked diligently on your behalf to prepare the best facilities possible for our players to compete on. Thank you ladies. Planning is well underway to improve Rasey Park for 2005 and we know that your hard working committee will ensure this is a success.

The House Committee has worked continually to increase the usage of our wonderful facility. The introduction last year of the Downey Park Dinner has exposed a greater number of members to the facility that we all own. The 2004 Dinner was even bigger and better, thank you to Kym Bell for all her work on Events throughout the year, it is sad that Kym will not be re-standing for Management in 2005. Private function bookings have added to our bottom line and aids in generating funds to update the equipment available for our members. Thank you to our volunteers who make this all possible.

2004 again saw BWHA take on the provision of a Canteen and Bar at the SHC to fill the gap left with the closure of the Legends Clubs. A very big thank-you is extended to Mary Cockings and her small but enthusiastic band of volunteers and paid staff who took on this additional workload.

During the past few years we have undertaken to provide a more efficient accounting system for our large association. This in no way takes away from the tireless work of Mary Cockings, but is to assist the Treasurers role with reporting and procedures that allow for easier auditing of our Accounts and better presentation to our members. Electronic Banking is being used more, this helps to reduce the time required by volunteers to physically write cheques and assists with our cash-flow management. There is still a way to go, but incremental introduction of new procedures will continue in the future.

Many things have been discussed, administered and planned during the year. There has been two underlying issues this year that need our urgent attention: 6 BWHA 2004 Annual Report Senior Section

1. The Management Committee needs some small restructuring to better service to our members. Management has proposed to clubs that the Competitions – Operations Portfolio include Umpiring and Technical. With the extra portfolio (formerly Umpires) taking on Communications, to cover Sponsorship, Media, Newsletters and Awards. This will be voted on at a Special Council Meeting prior to the AGM in November. 2. The need for another turf, a turf owned and operated by BWHA for BWHA members. More time will be given to exploring this in 2005. Brisbane could easily sustain another 3 turfs and BWHA needs to provide a surface that allows us to better plan for our Development, Tournaments and Finals. We hope that by the end of 2005 we can report on some specifics for the future.

At this point I must say a special thank you to Kathy Duggan, who on numerous occasions has guided and assisted me. Kathy‟s position of Secretary of the Association is the backbone of our Management committee and through her knowledge and passion all of us are inspired to continue supporting the development of BWHA.

2004 has been a rewarding, tiring, exciting and at times a frustrating year, a year that has enlightened me to the enormous debt of gratitude we owe current and past volunteers. On the whole I have enjoyed this season and I look forward to representing you in future years. Together we can continue to make BWHA bigger and better.

Lisa-Maree Jones President

SECRETARY’S REPORT

BWHA is run by volunteers a fact known by most but unfortunately not always fully appreciated. With an association of over 2500 members the organisation and running of this association is a mammoth job. During the “off-season” (October to January) the Management Committees diligently work to develop budgets, calendars, policies and procedures to assist the association to grow and strengthen. For those in the administration of our sport there is really no off-season, but a playing season and a non-playing season. Both have their challenges and rewards, but both cannot be sustained without the other. Congratulations to all administrators from club level to BWHA for their commitment to our sport in 2004.

During October and November of 2003 our Junior and Senior Management Committees along with many of our sub- committees and staff, worked tirelessly attending meetings and researching and producing calendars, policies, procedures and programs for playing season 2004. During this time BWHA also took the first steps in a new direction for our association. The position of Secretary was changed from a volunteer position to an appointed position. This was endorsed at the Annual General Meeting in November, the Management Committee was also restructured to allow nominees to nominate for specific portfolios, to better utilise the talents of our volunteers.

This does not mean the position of Secretary has changed in essence. The secretary still follows the direction and decisions of the Management Committees, but as this position has evolved over the years, finding a volunteer to fill such a time consuming job and be able to perform all necessary tasks while having a “real” fulltime job was becoming more and more difficult. The Secretaries during the past five years have done an admirable job, but the position became such that it was a juggling job that was difficult for timely decision-making for our association in this electronic “we want the answer now” age we now live in.

I was honoured to be appointed to this position in November 2003, and will continue to work to fulfil the requirements of the members through the directions of the Management Committees. I have been blessed having worked in the past with some of the best volunteer administrators in our sport, and I will continue to use the lessons learnt from them to work for BWHA.

The direct nomination of volunteers to Management Portfolios is the beginning of the next step to change our Management Board from a working committee to an Executive decision-making Board. Our Management Boards are not only the “brains-trust” setting policies, procedures and planning for the future, but continue to be the hands-on working committees making it all physically happen from week to week. This must evolve to allow better utilisation of the great talents we have in our association and spread the load so we maintain stability and growth while avoiding the too familiar burn out of volunteers.

This does all take time and the planning for this was initiated many years ago and will come to full fruition in the foreseeable future. 7 BWHA 2004 Annual Report Senior Section

At the Annual General Meeting in November 2003 we had delegates from all Senior Clubs, Life Members and Guests in attendance and nominations for many of the BWHA positions. A full list of the elected volunteers for our association is shown in the front of both the Junior and Senior Sections of this Annual Report. My sincere thanks to all these people who willingly gave their time to run our association, without you there would be no hockey for women and girls in the greater Brisbane region. Vote Counters were appointed to record the votes for a small number of positions that required voting and to count the votes for changes to the Rules of Association and By-Laws. Supper was also provided and enjoyed by all.

After all the planning meetings in October and November, clubs were able to receive the fees and fines for the 2004 season at the AGM to allow them time to plan for their club, along with a number of important changes to rules and policies. Clubs now all start in January/February and to allow them to be better prepared Management endeavours to provide important information prior to Christmas.

The Management Committee and staff enjoyed a Christmas Dinner in early December and welcomed a short Christmas break while the office was closed for three weeks. Having said this the association never really stops and the Executive continued to ensure all urgent matters were attended to during this time.

The new Management re-convened on 20th January 2004, to ensure all was prepared for the first Council Meeting of the year. The first Council Meeting held on the 27th January was well attended by all clubs. The first Council Meeting is very important with the Administration Folders distributed and explained. Many clubs value this folder as it allows them to forward plan and prepare. This is essential as all club administrators are volunteers like our Management and time management is essential.

January/February is also the time when the Southern Cross Committee is hard at work organising the elite pre-season competition in South East Queensland. BWHA has two teams competing in this competition. BWHA is a founding member of the Southern Cross group. They provide competition for U11, U13, U15, U18, Veterans and Open age players to in most cases prepare for the State Championships. This is a valuable tool used by BWHA, to further the skills of our players and in many instances assist with selection. As BWHA greatest asset (its‟ size) can also be a handicap when nominations far outweigh the positions available. This is a happy but difficult situation. We are always able to provide quality teams to compete in all tournaments, but many worthy people often miss out – but that is the nature of sport. Thank you to the selectors for their professionalism in this area.

Many important items came up this year:

2004 an Olympic Year: and for hockey that means more exposure. The exposure for BWHA this Olympic year was increased with the appointment of our RCD as the Hockeyroos Manager for the Olympics. This was a deserving reward for all Sharyn‟s hard work with Australian Teams over many years. BWHA worked with Sharyn to provide the opportunity for her to fulfil her Olympic dream, while maintaining her valuable and essential position in BWHA. BWHA Development area in partnership with Hockey Queensland, planned and co-ordinated total coverage for BWHA Development during Sharyn‟s absences. Margaret Dilger (BWHA RDO) worked increased hours to fill the RCD position in Sharyn‟s absence and Sue Barsby ensured the administration of the Development area continued efficiently in the background. The efficiency showed by this group of talented ladies lead by Liz O‟Connor continued BWHA‟s commitment to development of our players and coaches. Well-done ladies on a fine job this year. A special thank you to Sharyn for the signed Hockeyroos Bodysuit that she brought back with her for BWHA, this will be framed and displayed in the clubhouse next year. The performances by all teams are detailed in the Development Report and in the Record Section of our Annual Report.

The Queensland Primary (Under 12 years) Schools Tournament was held at Downey Park. Permission was sought and gained from the QWASC to allow boys to utilise Downey Park. Downey Park is a women‟s reserve, but the permission to allow the Under 12 boys to compete at Downey Park allowed a wonderful tournament to be held, showcasing our great facilities and the future talent of Queensland hockey. 20 teams from 10 regions across Queensland participated. The BWHA Administration Staff, Canteen Staff, Groundsman and BWHA volunteers all worked with Mark Tibbles, Alyson Aleksic and the Organising Committee of Metropolitan North Primary School Sport (host of the event) and all had a great time.

Hockey Queensland added new Registration criteria – Alternate Registrations. This was established to replace QAS Exemptions and allow players who participate in one centre to play for their centre of origin at the State Open and Premier League competitions. This decision was confirmed in March of 2004 and while some teething problems did arise, BWHA Management will discuss the full impact of this rule change in October/November, so our rules can be modified to accommodate this new registration type in season 2005. 8 BWHA 2004 Annual Report Senior Section

Turf Usage: as the need increases the availability and maximum usage of the artificial turfs in Brisbane continues to be an area of great concern. Hockey Queensland is working hard to have replacement surfaces put down at the SHC to attract more National and International hockey for our enjoyment. Hockey Queensland also tried to secure the relocation of the Hockey AIS to Brisbane, unfortunately this was unsuccessful, but I am sure it is still on the agenda for the future. The attraction of these special events means the availability of the turf at key times is a great challenge. The BWHA Turf Committees have worked in partnership with BHA to fully utilise the 3 artificial turfs in Brisbane. Thank you to BHA for their professionalism in working together to achieve the best results possible for both associations. Thank you to Jenny Heron and her team of dedicated volunteers for spending many hours working in this area. Thank you to Wesley Baldry (SHC) and Terry Kennedy (BP) for their assistance with bookings at the venues. This year specific training nights for Men and Women was trialled for the first time. BWHA and BHA will discuss this before recommendations will be made to Hockey Queensland for season 2005. The Juniors also enjoyed having the 3 artificial surfaces on Friday nights in 2004, this was great for our Junior girls and discussions with BHA will determine if we are able to continue this in 2005.

Legends the Club: unfortunately went into receivership. This caused many problems, not least of which meant there was no Canteen or Bar facility for our members at the SHC. Hockey Queensland approached BHA and BWHA to fill this void. As in the past BWHA took on this role with the full support of BHA, with a profit sharing arrangement. Mary Cockings along with her many other hats organised staff and stocking of the areas and was the very popular Men‟s Veterans “Bar Maid” every Tuesday night throughout the season. I am sure Mary will thank everyone (and there were many) who helped in this area in her report, but I will mention Caroline Schomberg and Sue Barsby for their efforts above and beyond the call of duty. It is hoped that the Southside Sports Association will take over the rental of the Licenced premises in the near future and they will cater to the local community and the hockey community to make the venue a success.

SHC has changed: With Legends in receivership and Hockey Queensland taking over the SHC, much time has been spent addressing the many issues these changes have raised. We hope that the stewardship the venue is now under will allow hockey to benefit and grow. BHA and BWHA will continue to be the major users as demographics dictate but the need for another turf in Brisbane is increasing momentum and the BWHA Management Boards of the future will need to push this up on the priority list.

QWASC (Queensland Women’s Amateur Sports Council) will finally cease to exist at the end of 2004. This organisation established on 3/8/1960 (formerly the Women‟s Amateur Sports Appeal Committee 24/09/1957 to 3/8/60), leased and managed the wonderful women‟s reserve we call Downey Park. Many women‟s sports have called Downey Park home over the years, with Brisbane Softball, Downey Park Netball and Brisbane Women‟s Hockey being the final members still utilising the facility. With the increases in Public Liability Insurance and the strict criteria to gain this coverage, the need to re-structure the lease of Downey Park has become necessary. The Downey Park lease will be split into two parts with Netball holding the lease over the grounds currently used by them. The area shared by Brisbane Softball Association and BWHA at Downey Park will be one lease with strict guidelines on the shared usage to continue our amicable co-existence in the future. This is a very sad time for all who were a part of the QWASC; they have worked tirelessly for women‟s sport in Brisbane.

BCC & Queensland Government again assisted Downey Park to improve the facilities. The final stage of the field maintenance at Downey Park was completed, with Rasey Park and Field 13 on the agenda for future years. The most recent improvements this year have been the installation of water fountains and a new fence along the canal/drain. We appreciate every dollar that is spent to improve the fields we play on. The shared (Softball/Hockey) area of Downey Park, never really gets a rest and thousands of women and girls every weekend and countless school children and local residents mid week benefit from the work carried out by the sporting associations and the BCC and Qld Government. We look forward to further assistance, so we can continue to provide these valuable services to the community.

What should we look forward to…

As the association continues to grow and the clubhouse starts to age a number of items have been given a priority listing for the near future. Replacement of toilets to Dual flush (Water Management plan), a lift for easier access to the 1st Floor, new offices for the administration of our sport, just to name a few. We now have 3 fulltime and 3 Part- time/Casual staff working at Downey Park along with our seasonal Casuals (Bar & Canteen) and our many volunteers who make hockey happen. Making best use of the spaces available, while being mindful of not wasting our members‟ money is under much discussion at the moment. Funding was sought to provide some of these items, but we were unfortunately unsuccessful in gaining any funding. We will continue to look at these and other problems to find a suitable solution. It still surprises me that many players in BWHA do not understand that the beautiful clubhouse we 9 BWHA 2004 Annual Report Senior Section have at Downey Park is open every Saturday during hockey season for people to socialise and watch some great hockey on Field 1. The facility is also available for hire and makes a wonderful picturesque venue with ample parking and close to public transport for any style of function. With the success over the past two years of the Downey Park Dinner, Management will be looking at holding the Presidents Medal Dinner at the Downey Park Clubhouse in 2005. I believe it is the rightful home of our most prestigious event.

BWHA is listed to host the State Under 15 Girls Championships in 2005. As a turf field is required to stage this event, the tournament with the support of Hockey Queensland will be held at the State Hockey Centre. BWHA hosting events at the SHC in the past has been a very costly exercise and HQ has assured us that we will not incur the turf hire charge for the tournament, which in the past has prevented us from hosting turf events. We will be looking for a working Committee to organise this tournament early in 2005 and we hope that many people volunteer their services to make the tournament a success for all who attend.

Thank you to all….

There are many people to thank for their work for BWHA in any year; I hope that no one will be forgotten in this collection of reports. I very much believe that every person has a talent and skill to offer, the talents and skills may range from domestic to corporate, but all are essential ingredients in making BWHA inclusive and dynamic. To every wonderful person who has put up his or her hand to assist, whether it was in a small or large way, my sincere thanks.

My special thanks to the Management Committees (Senior and Junior) who work non-stop year round to provide hockey for our members. You will see their names again and again in these reports, and I hope next time you see them you say thank you for all the time and effort they give to our sport as volunteers. Their enthusiasm, skill, commitment and good humour cannot be faulted. To the staff Sharyn, Sue, Marg, Stacey and John and all the rest of the seasonal staff thank you for your diligence and patience. Working in the sport you love, while very rewarding also has its‟ moments of great demand and until you have been put into that environment, you will never fully understand the special skills needed to negotiate it successfully.

A time of sadness ….

Unfortunately every year we lose loved ones, people special to us for many reasons, my condolences to all members who experienced this sadness during the year. My thoughts immediately turn to Les Rendell a patriarch of Northern Suburbs Hockey Club, one of the most generous and gentle men to grace Downey Park. His legacy will be evident for many years to come as his children and grandchildren continue as vital members of both BWHA and BHA. Also, Greg Maddock Vice Patron of Hockey Queensland, former Queensland Hockey Player and respected business man, a terrible loss to all who knew him. And the passing of our Life Member and former President Lena Dobbins on 9 October 2004, yet another precious person has left our hockey community.

Happy off-season…

My best wishes to everyone for the off-season, enjoy this time, I look forward to working with you all in 2005.

Kathy Duggan Secretary

TREASURER’S REPORT

What a year! Hasn‟t it gone fast? We have, once again, finished with a small surplus and considering the very busy year we have had and the services provided by this association, this has been rewarding.

Outstanding Debtors this year was $600.00 and this amount has now been paid. Thank you to all Club Treasurers for their efforts in finalising their accounts by 30 September.

The anticipated increase in Registrations (to HQ) hopefully is estimated to be C.P.I. only. Unfortunately at the time of writing this report we have no idea whether the player insurance will increase from $43.00. We should know this by the end of November and all clubs will be notified as soon as possible.

Queensland Women‟s Amateur Sports Council should cease to exist by 31 December 2004 and Hockey, Softball and Netball will have their own leases. The good news we have received from the Brisbane City Council is that our Annual Rent will be $1200.00.

10 BWHA 2004 Annual Report Senior Section Many thanks to all clubs, Senior and Junior, for their co-operation and courtesy at all times. Also my thanks to Karen Hickling, BWHA Junior Treasurer, for her valued support.

Our sponsors, Schweppes, Streets, 4 „n 20, Just Hockey once again were marvellous and I thank them sincerely for their continued support. Even though at times I think they shudder when they heard I was calling them wondering what I was wanting this time as a “donation”.

Thank you to Mrs Gail Reynolds our Auditor on her continued support of this association and hockey in general.

I would be remiss if I didn‟t include a special thanks to Caroline Schomberg and Sue Barsby in relation to all the time and effort that they put in to help me with the running of the Canteen and Bar at Colmslie for six months.

To Nerieada Gill and her band of workers – well done everyone. We may not always say it but we do appreciate everything you do to make our canteens run so well.

Thank you to Maureen Hayes, our Patron, for her invaluable assistance and advice not only to our association, but to Queensland Women‟s Amateur Sports Council.

Finally thank you to the valued members of Brisbane Management because without your encouragement and support throughout the season I would not have survived this season.

As usual I have left the most important “thank you” to last. That is to Kathy Duggan for her assistance, not only to me in this portfolio, but to everyone else in the association. Well done, Kath.

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. See you all next season.

CONSTITUTION COMMITTEE REPORT

This year we (Ronda Nix and myself) have spent reviewing the By-Laws to have an up to date document to present to the Committee for review and then forward to Clubs for their questions and we hope approval. Time has got away from us as we were hoping to have this for this year. We are hoping to have a more clear direction as to what is required for clubs to affiliate to BWHA requirements and procedures needed to enable affiliation and some other matters as turned up during the year. Next year is the aim now.

I would like to thank all the members of the Constitution Committee for their help and understanding through this past year.

Keith Tidey. Convenor. COMPETITIONS PORTFOLIO REPORTS

COMPETITIONS – FIXTURE & GRADING PORTFOLIO

TURF

After the turf affiliations came into the BWHA office early in February, the process of working out Challenge and Grading games commenced.

The following affiliations for each turf division were received - Division 1 - 8, Division 2 – 9, Division 3 – 10 and Division 4 – 10.

South West United who were Minor Premiers in Division 4 requested a Challenge Game to be upgraded to Division 3. South West United played University 3 and won the challenge game 4 nil.

Grading games were conducted on Friday 20 February and Monday 23 February. Division 1 & 2 remained the same as in 2003. The only changes were: in Division 3 - South West United being upgraded which resulted in University 3 being down graded to Division 4. Hopefully the teams who missed out on our turf divisions have worked on building their turf skills and are looking for another chance in 2005. 11 BWHA 2004 Annual Report Senior Section

The BWHA turf fixtures commenced on Friday 12 March, utilising the Friday nights before the juniors commenced their fixtures. This covered the days and weekends missed due to Premier League, National Under 21s, Schoolgirls and Veterans.

Fixtures were played at both the SHC and Burringbar Park. 16 timeslots were required each weekend to complete the fixture round, starting at 12.15 on Saturday and 10.45am on Sunday, finishing at 7.30pm.

DOWNEY PARK – GRASS

This year 53 affiliations were received, after a few phone calls, asking clubs to consider being regraded for specific divisions, we were able to grade the divisions as follows – DP1, DP2 and DP3 all 10 teams, DP4 – 6 teams, DP5 and DP6 – 7 teams.

A late affiliation came in and we were able to make the DP6 division into 8 teams and no bye. No grading games were then required.

There were three Teams that had no wins, but they all had draws and no grass teams had zero points.

Presidents Cup for both turf and grass was played at the SHC in conjunction with BHA. BWHA played 6 division on turf and 6 divisions on grass. A very successful day, with the results and the President‟s Twelve listed in the Records Section of this report.

This year BWHA implemented the 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw and this made the points table very interesting. Congratulations to the Minor Premiers and to the Premiers and a reminder to all clubs who have finished in the lower end of the points table to be prepared for grading and or challenge games early next year.

MONDAY MASTERS

Twelve teams affiliated for the Masters competition. Division 1 and Division 2 started fixtures on Monday 24 March and the fixture season finished on the 16 August, with semis, prelims and the grand final being played on Monday 6 September. Next year we may require grading games to even out the competition.

SUMMER FIXTURES

In the 2003 –2004 off-season, BWHA again organised a summer competition that catered for Masters, 6-a-side and Mixed teams. These games were held on both fields at the State Hockey Centre from October through to December. All nights were well attended. Competition was fierce but friendly with no points or goal scorers recorded, no one player can score more than three goals in any given game.

Due to turf replacement the 2004 –2005 Summer Competition will be played on one surface only from October to February. At the time of writing this report the Masters and 3 Mixed nights are full with 1 space only available for the Tuesday 6 a side.

Jenny Heron Competition – Fixtures & Grading Manager

COMPETITION: OPERATIONS

Technical Officials Coverage required  3 venues (SHC, BP and Downey Park)  fixtures – Mon night, Fri night, Sat afternoon (3 venues), Sun (2-3 venues)  finals – President‟s Cup plus three weeks of finals fixtures

Obviously, without volunteers, BWHA would not be able to run a competition. Therefore, a big thank you is required (again) to Mary Cockings and Lyn Thomas, who took on the majority of the workload and also continued to willingly impart their immense knowledge to the club provided “techies” each week. In total, 14 BWHA volunteers manned technical benches throughout 2004.

If anyone would like to learn how to be a technical official, please approach Mary, Lyn or myself. 12 BWHA 2004 Annual Report Senior Section

Judiciary Committee Unfortunately, the judiciary had to be convened three times in 2004. Hopefully, these volunteers won‟t be called upon in 2005.

Sports Trainers During 2004, 8 sports trainers were employed by BWHA. A roster was provided at the beginning of the season and apart from a couple of changes to cover emergencies, everything usually worked to plan.

Venues The BWHA office arranged (as usual) for the technical benches at the 3 venues to be provided with required supplies.

Conclusion Thanks to everyone who helped me in 2004 – it was a steep learning curve, but with the assistance of Jenny Heron, Mary Cockings and Lyn Thomas and all of the other volunteers and sports trainers, we got there.

Sonya Fisher Competition: Operations Manager

COMPETITIONS: RECORDING & REPORTING (MATCH SECRETARY REPORT)

In what has become a normal situation for our fixture season, games played on the last fixture day have been vital in deciding minor premiers and semi-final placings. In fact, the very last fixture on the turf decided a minor premiership.

Once again, those seemingly harsh decisions made by the Grading Committees at the start of the season proved, in hindsight, to be well balanced. Congratulations to both the Turf and Grass Grading Committees for a job well done. Within the twelve separate divisions of our three competitions, only four teams (QUT 1, Bulimba 6, University 6 and South West United Masters) were successful in winning all three awards: President‟s Cup, Minor Premiers and Premiers. An indication of the closeness of the competition at the top is the fact that there were three different winners in both Divisions 1 and 2.

Thank you to all Club officials for your diligence in registering and re-registering your players – your cooperation has made my job less burdensome. Congratulations to all involved in the day-to-day running of fixtures - your dedication has resulted in a relatively trouble free season. Hopefully, our problems with dual registration and alternative associations will be resolved before next season.

Lyn Thomas Match Secretary

DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO REPORT

Congratulations to all volunteers, players and the development Team for the results obtained in which was a very busy year for all. The results obtained do not just happen, but are due to hard work and forward planning in the off season.

The Development Team this year was:

. Liz O‟Connor – Portfolio Manager . Sharyn Simpson – Regional Coaching Director . Margaret Dilger – Regional Development Officer . Sue Barsby – Administration Assistant . U11, U13, U15 and Minkey & Modified Co-ordinators.

Part of the RCD‟s salary is re-imbursed by Hockey Queensland, and in the RCD‟s absence, is used to pay the RDO‟s salary.

The focus this season was to engage, in part-time roles, administrators to undertake the co-ordination of the U11, U13 and U15 development programs. This role is vital to the success of development programs but is often very time consuming.

13 BWHA 2004 Annual Report Senior Section It was pleasing to have the co-ordinators aboard to work with the RCD and RDO. I am sure that the co-ordinators have learnt from the 2004 season and this experience will be invaluable for next season.

The co-ordinator roles mean that our RDO and RCD can use their skills by coaching the coaches and the players, rather than becoming bogged down in administration. This has been particularly reflected in the U18 representative success.

The U11 development program again proved to be very popular with over 140 nominations. It means not only that representative sides are selected but the U11‟s are introduced to valuable skills at an early age.

Both the RCD and RDO continually strive for excellence in their own personal development. Congratulations to Margaret Dilger, appointed as the Australian U21 Assistant Coach and to Sharyn Simpson as Manager of the Hockeyroos for the Athens Olympics. These roles provide valuable experience which is passed onto Coaches and Clubs at the Coaching Workshops.

Development is not something which is static but an evolving program which can be adapted to particular goals identified by BWHA Management. For example, the move towards year round skills development for players.

We look forward to another busy year next year and building upon the excellent representative results achieved this year. It again, I think, will be a real team effort that can only be a positive experience for all concerned.

A big thanks to Sue Barsby for a job well done, as the central point of development co-ordination.

A big thank you to Kathy Duggan, Secretary for her patience and professionalism as the interface of BWHA.

Finally to my fellow Management Committee members who work tirelessly to make BWHA an association to be proud of.

Liz O‟Connor Vice President & Development Manager

REGIONAL COACHING DIRECTOR (RCD)

I have heard it said on many occasions that “It is the team behind the team that is the heart of an organization” and I believe that this is particularly indicative of our association in 2004. The heart and strength of our association lies in the tireless efforts and enthusiasm of our very skilled volunteers who have worked co-operatively with professional staff to produce excellent results in 2004.

The player and coach development calendar was extensive with development opportunities and events being offered almost 12 months of the year. To meet the demands of these programs we welcomed appointments of part-time and casual staff within the Development department.

Player and Coach Development

The Development departments programs are reviewed regularly and changes made, if necessary, so that a flexible forward thinking approach is followed.

Development Programs BWHA has been conducting these programs since 1998 (7 years) and during this time we have accommodated for change as a result of feedback from BWHA‟s Hockey community. The programs have experienced steady growth over the years, in particular the U11 program and U13 program. It has become a major event on the Development calendar from year to year and a huge task to organize. The viability of these programs have been be scrutinized from year to year and their continued place in the Development calendar is yet to be finalized.

The 5-week program addressed the following needs;  Preparation for State Championship  Selection of teams for Southern Cross and State Championship  Exposure to turf hockey skills, skill development  Development opportunity of Coaches, umpires and selectors.  Match practice

14 BWHA 2004 Annual Report Senior Section The following changes were made this year;  Co-ordinators were appointed for U15, U13 and U11 programs.  U15 Development included lectures on Nutrition, Positional Play, and Injury Prevention along with practice matches over a whole day.  U13 Pre-season Mini- Tournament was organized with several aims in mind: e.g. nominated players to play in own club team environment, club teams to have pre-season match practice, simulate finals experience, selection purposes, opportunity for coaches to give feedback to selectors, umpire development.

PREMIER LEAGUE, OPEN AND UNDER AGE CHAMPIONSHIPS, SOUTHERN CROSS LEAGUE After selection of teams and coach appointments were made each team has between a 3 to 6 week training block. This year we have successfully won 4 out of the 6 Division One State Championship titles and our U11 teams also achieved wonderful results at the Southern Cross Tournament. The results achieved at these hockey events are a benchmark of our association strengths. In addition to the success of our teams individual players have achieved higher representative honours.

Congratulations to all players recognized by selections in Australian Team/Squads, Queensland Team/Squads, and Queensland Best 16/Talent Id Squads in 2004. The number of these players in each age/division is as follows; *(Individual players name appears in records section of annual report).

Hockeyroos Squad/Team 3 Australian Development Squad 6 Australian U21 Team/AIS Team 6 Australian U18 3 Scorchers Squad 10/1 Qld U21 Team/Squad 9/2 Qld U18 Team/Squad 2004 8 Qld U18 Team/Squad 2005 7/2 Qld U15 Team/Squad 4/1 Qld U13 Team/Squad 2/2 Qld Secondary Schoolgirls 12

BWHA also organized, conducted and facilitated the following additional player and coach development opportunities:  Training programs to assist players with their preparation for various tournaments.  BWHA Team competed against many visiting teams from Beijing, New Zealand, NSW, Maryborough, QAS Regional Team and Curtain Raiser  BWHA Team competed in the very competitive International Schools Southern Skies Tournament held in July resulting in a very creditable runners-up prize.  BWHA have been supporting the Brisbane Indoor Hockey competition for the past 6 years by submitting 2 development team for competition. We have also achieved great results from Brisbane players being selected for State teams.  We were fortunate enough to be asked to participate in the Channel Ten National Kids TV program Totally Wild. 26 U13 Players from SWU and BWHA development team had the opportunity to represent and showcase the game of hockey nationally. For those who viewed the show you would agree with me whole- heartedly the girls did an excellent job.  Primary School GK Clinic was conducted during the championships and organized by BWHA development department with assistance from Hockey Queensland and Brisbane Hockey Association  Golden Circle HQ Coaching Clinics attended by Talent Id players from U15 and U13 State Championships.  23 coaches successfully completed their Level One Coaching Course.  Level O course conducted in conjunction with Minkey and Modified Guides day  BWHA Representative coaches attended Coaching workshops held in conjunction with State Championships.

Summary In recognition of future challenges that need to be met if we are to maintain our position as a leading association, the Development Department along with Junior and Senior Management will be primarily concerned with planning for 2005 season and beyond over the next few months. Through progressive thinking and fine-tuning of the services provided by the Development department, BWHA will enjoy continued success and maintain its reputation as trailblazers within the hockey community.

15 BWHA 2004 Annual Report Senior Section In conclusion I would firstly, like to express my sincere gratitude and congratulations to all those volunteer coaches, selectors and managers of our representative teams from U11 to Premier league for a job well done. I would like to acknowledge and give praise to Pam Patteson for her tireless efforts and expertise with our U13 and U15 age groups.

My second thanks go to BWHA Senior, Junior Management teams and Office staff Kath and Stacey for the tremendous support I received to allow for me to achieve everyone‟s sporting dream to attend the Olympic games in Athens. Put simply, it was an experience I will always remember. Whilst the team did not achieve the success we would have all wished for I feel honoured to have been part of the Australian Olympic Team and associated with a fantastic group called the “Hockeyroos” in 2004.

My last thanks are to the Development Department co-workers Sue Barsby, (there is no one more organized I am sure), Liz O‟Connor for her contribution and vital link with Senior Management and Margaret Dilger who I cannot thank enough for her support professionally and privately.

I look forward to the challenges ahead in 2005, wishing you all a happy and safe holiday.

Sharyn Simpson Regional Coaching Director

REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFICER (RDO)

As the Development Officer in Brisbane Women‟s Hockey I have been working for some years within Brisbane. The number of schools and personnel playing hockey in the Brisbane region is encouraging and the participation rate in the sport is increasing.

The Regional Coaching Director and Regional Development Officer job-shared roles a lot during the year because of commitments we both have in other areas of hockey. This arrangement was successful for the year and I believe that BWHA will gain an enormous amount from the knowledge we both gained.

All players, coaches and managers associated with Brisbane teams are to be congratulated and thanked for your efforts. Identifying and appointing coaches has become a dilemma for the Development Department. Whilst many opportunities are open for interested coaches (under 11, 13 & 15 development programs, Level O & 1 courses), we have been struggling to find coaches for teams. Coaches are encouraged to participate in programs and nominate for teams that they believe they could coach.

Many players gained Queensland and Australian selections and they are to be congratulated on these achievements. They are not only representing their state/nation but Brisbane as well. I know they all cherish these accolades and they remember that they learnt the basics from BWHA.

Thank you to the office staff – Kathy and Stacey – and to the Development Assistant – Sue – for all your patience during the year. Sharyn‟s sojourns overseas continued, with the major trip the Olympic Games this year. Well done on what would have been a stressful and time-consuming job. I know you would have done the job admirably. Management have been very supportive during the year and it does not go un-noticed and it is appreciated.

Wishing you all a safe holiday season and see you all retuning in 2005.

Margaret Dilger Regional Development Officer

UNIFORMS & EQUIPMENT

A busy year for uniforms again dressing 27 teams for all championships and Southern Cross, from the veterans down to under 11 it amounts to well over 400 ladies and girls and a lot of Saturday mornings. We implemented some new systems that have worked very well and anything that makes our job easier is a godsend.

Brisbane apparel sold at every try on day making Sue very busy on Mondays tallying up the money. A big thank you to Jenny Tidey and Sue Barsby without their help I wouldn't be able to do the job.

Rhonda Bentley Uniform Officer

16 BWHA 2004 Annual Report Senior Section TOURS REPORT

This year Brisbane was on the move for all championships - with our “babies” U13 off to Cairns for their first big trip away, to our Vets in Townsville, our U15‟s in Maryborough, our Opens in Toowoomba and finally our U18‟s to Warwick. We all played well and the results showed, with many players making Queensland teams.

This year we introduced a new payment system, which worked very well with all players being financial before each tour left. This helps with the big payments associated with most tours and our Treasurer had less “headaches” financially. Also, many Clubs did not have that extra burden of chasing players for money, once they received their invoices. So all round BWHA (including our Mary) and Clubs were happy.

With tours comes apparel – I thank Rhonda Bentley for all her efforts and time on Saturday mornings fitting all our players. Her assistant (and driver), Jenny Tidey, worked hard fitting over 400 players as well as selling our apparel on hand. This year, there was a large increase in apparel bought mainly due to these 2 ladies and their cheery attitude.

I would like to thank the Senior and Junior Management for giving me this portfolio and for allowing me the freedom of making “on the spot decisions” to make this department work more efficiently.

Cheers - have a great Chrissy break and see you all again next season.

UMPIRES PORTFOLIO

UMPIRES AND TECHNICAL COMMITTEE

Another good year for umpire and technical official development, albeit marred by ongoing abuse issues. BWHA Management fully supports its umpire and technical officials and it will not continue to tolerate abuse of either.

An association that is unable to continue to develop these types of officials could find itself unable to hold fixtures, of the existing quality and quantity, in the future.

Umpires It remains each Club‟s duty to develop its own umpires to DP3 standard and then nominate them for testing / mentoring by BWHA. This is the role of the Club Umpire Convenor and / or Coach.

BWHA is planning on holding an umpires development session early in 2005 and will be asking clubs to send inexperienced but interested players / members to attend. A Level One Umpires Course (for higher badged umpires), is also to be held early in 2005.

During 2004, BWHA has had an incredible success rate with the umpires that it sent to State / National Championships. All umpires that were sent either received the badge that they were being tested for or positive encouragement to continue seeking assessment. This is a good achievement but needs to be viewed in context. The number of umpires that were sent to these championships totalled less than 20 – less than the number required to umpire a third of a regular weekend fixture load. So more is required at the grassroots level to ensure that all divisions have umpires that have an understanding of the rules and have confidence in applying them (without the threat of abuse from on field players or off-field supporters).

Testing / mentoring by BWHA – in 2004 a group of people continued to provide assistance at Grass / Turf venues – Cheryl Kann (the main person responsible for badge assessment) was ably assisted by Lyn Thomas, Gaye Henderson, Caroline Schomberg, Robyn Sutherland and Sonya Fisher on the grass and Lyn Hill, Annette Crandell, Kerry Chatfield, Alyson Aleksic, Heather Scraggs and Kathy Duggan on the turf. This enabled a lot of umpires to be mentored / assessed during the year. However, assistance is always less than what is required to cover everyone that nominated for testing from DP2 through to Div 1. In 2005, we will again be requesting assistance from experienced umpires (Bris Intermediate and above) – please contact the U&TC if you can help out. A full list of the Badges Awarded in 2004 is contained in the records section of this report.

A number of senior umpires also assisted the Juniors with mentoring / assessments. This was a new and very focussed development programme, which will assist the Senior association in coming years.

17 BWHA 2004 Annual Report Senior Section The 2004 Rules Paper (a bane to some) continued to see discussion within clubs and the association lead to a higher level of knowledge within the Association – which is the overall aim of holding an open-book exam of this nature. It will be back in 2005.

Technical

The knowledge that Lyn Thomas, Mary Cockings and Cheryl Kann have, and provide to both the U&TC and the Association is unprecedented in Qld. A technical course was again held this year by BWHA, however, more on the job training is required. Turf teams have to provide a technical assistant at each game, and several clubs have received strong support from parents / friends who assist on a regular basis (each week!). However, we need to build on this knowledge and start working towards accrediting technical officials to ensure the long term future of the association.

If anyone wants to obtain more of this “on the job” training please see a member of the U&TC – it can be arranged. A full list of the Badges Awarded in 2004 is contained in the records section of this report.

Sonya Fisher Chair – Umpires & Technical Committee

TURF UMPIRES’ STEWARD REPORT

This being an Olympic year, Jan Hadfield was absent for most of the year with her FIH commitments. However, for the few weeks she was here, she mentored the Division 1 umpires again. BWHA is extremely fortunate to have such a highly qualified Umpires Coach in our association.

Our other International and Australian Badged umpires mentored and assessed the younger Division 1 and 2 umpires. Thank you to Alyson Aleksic, Kerry Chatfield and especially to Lyn Hill and Annette Crandell for their dedicated efforts in this area.

Thank you also to Kathy Duggan and Heather Scraggs for mentoring and assessing the Division 3 and 4 umpires when they were available. Most of these umpires also play as well as umpire regularly, and as such their commitment to BWHA Umpires Development is very considerable – and much appreciated.

Thank you to the Club Umpires Convenors for all their work in passing on the allocations to their umpires – and finding substitutes when necessary. Yours is not a very popular or easy job! But I certainly appreciate all your hard - and often onerous –work!

And finally, special thanks to BWHA Management, Lyn Thomas, Jenny Heron, Kathy Duggan and Lyn Hill for their support and encouragement once again this season.

Cheryl Kann Turf Umpires Steward

GRASS UMPIRES’ STEWARD REPORT

Congratulations to the umpires at Downey Park who were awarded badges in 2004. To them and to all the other players who umpired each week my thanks for doing the job, as without umpires there is no game. It is hard and sometimes thankless work.

The requirement of having umpires sign in with the time steward continued to reduce the number of games without umpires to commence the game and contributed to a more organised umpiring system. I would recommend that this be continued. Also the weekly handout continued with equal success.

I have enjoyed working with the players who have been tested for badges and salute their commitment to umpiring almost every week and hope there will be more next year. It has been heartening to see some clubs accept their responsibility to increase their pool of umpires and to actively assist them. Many clubs are training umpires on junior divisions, which appears to be increasing the pool of senior umpires.

Some umpires have no interest in improving their standard when they reach the higher DP levels. This is disappointing and will ultimately reduce the number of turf umpires and increase the “burn out” problem. This is already occurring in some clubs with few high DP umpires. Clubs need to recognise that BWHA require an umpire 18 BWHA 2004 Annual Report Senior Section for every team every week and players do not want to umpire every week. When clubs register teams thought must be given to umpiring requirements.

A problem is the quality of the umpires in the lower grades. During the season I have endeavoured to give the lower grades some higher ranked umpires to help them enjoy their hockey. We are gradually increasing the number of umpires being tested on the lower grades, which brings mentors and testers to these games.

My thanks to Lyn Thomas who has an enormous knowledge and is so willing to help, without her assistance the season would have been chaotic. Cheryl Kann, Gaye Henderson and Sonya Fisher made a difference by assessing umpires and giving feedback.

Also many thanks to umpires who were willing to do whatever was asked. My thoughts turn to, Chris West, Penny Truslove, Marg Brown, Donna Gallagher, Lesley Bennett, Nadia Zaluki, Ruth Bloxham, Robyn Sutherland, Amanda Gould, Samara Gould, Stacey Williamson and the many others who stepped onto the breech.

My continuing thanks to the club umpire convenors who patiently survived my errors and the many changes I made when the errors were found. Thank you, one and all.

PROPERTY & FACILITIES PORTFOLIO REPORT

After being caught in a weak moment (late in the liquid evening of the 2003 BWHA Turf Dinner), I somehow found myself in the position of being responsible for BWHA Property & Facilities (the new posh name for House & Grounds). To say that the learning curve was steep would be somewhat inadequate, but luckily I have had the constant support from the best Committee Members that a fledgling portfolio manager could wish for. The breadth & depth of their knowledge & their willingness to assist at all times with minimal notice was invaluable.

Highlights & thanks for 2004:

1. The pre-season Downey Park working bees: thanks to all those who enabled P&F to clear a long & unattractive outstanding task list. There are plans afoot for some minor process changes for season 2005 to hopefully make these working bees even more effective. 2. The BCC works on Fields 4 & 5 (the cabbage patch). Unfortunately the BCC funding didn‟t extend to Rasey Park for 2004 or 2005; works here will now be up to BWHA over the off-season, so all rain dancing in the vicinity will be welcome. 3. The hard work of our groundsman John & his assistants Laurie & Noala. 4. The excellent job of Nerieada (best steak burgers in Brisbane) & her crew in the canteens at Downey Park & Rasey Park. 5. The efforts of all who worked in the canteen & bar at Colmslie, especially the constant supply of volunteers. 6. Denise, Caroline & Angela (Bud) for their work in the Downey Park bar, especially for the extra hours providing service to functions that hired the building. 7. All those who assisted with the running of Downey & Rasey Parks on a Saturday; locking, unlocking, flags in, flags out, dealing with the odd plumbing crisis etc. 8. Mary for her seemingly tireless dedication to BWHA & all her assistance to myself & the P&F portfolio over the past twelve months. 9. Robyn & Bev for their assistance with the Grounds Committee; if you ever need lines marked, Bev is most definitely the lady for the job. 10. Jenny & Joyce for their work behind the bar & in the kitchen at Downey Park. Also to Joyce for teaching me how to make caramel tarts with ginger nut biscuits & to Jenny for making what are possibly the best scones with jam & cream in Australia (Guess who got to sample some of the Life Member‟s afternoon tea on Downey Park Grand Final Day? Guess who would be quite happy to be adopted & fed full-time by either of the two ladies above?) 11. Finally, thanks to everyone who gave me a hand when I asked for help or let me know about problems or found me solutions-the job would be impossible without you all.

Don‟t forget, that Downey Park clubhouse is available for hire as a function venue all year round! `See you all in 2005,

EVENTS AND PROMOTIONS REPORT

Our season was opened at Downey Park on Saturday 3rd April with an afternoon tea shared with our life members. This is always a special day for these members as a „catch up‟ day and to enjoy some hockey as well.

Each club is allocated a raffle day to help raise funds for their club. To create more of a „club‟ day the fixture committee arranged to have their games played on Field 1. This arrangement was very successful and hopefully will continue in the future.

President‟s Cup day was held at the State Hockey Centre on Sunday 6th June for all grades, both women and men. The women‟s President‟s 12 was selected from the „player of the match‟ from each division. Trophies were presented to the winning teams.

The Downey Park Dinner was held on Saturday 7th August and was a great success. On this night Minor Premiership trophies and „player of division‟ for DP1 to DP6 were handed out. Judy Keen was our „absolutely fabulous‟ MC for the evening and kept us all amused and entertained with her witty commentary. Our main dinner was supplied by The Spitman Roast and desserts were from Lisa‟s Cakes & Catering from The Gap. The hall was beautifully decorated for free by Kim Gunner from Brisbane Wedding Decorators. We had over 20 raffle prizes for the night as well as 2 door prizes.

The BWHA Dinner was held at Kedron Wavell Services Club on Friday 27th August. This night was also a success and was very capably MC‟d by Kathy Duggan. Minor Premiership and individual trophies were handed out on the night.

Grand Final day at Downey Park was on Saturday 4th September with trophies and medallions handed out to the teams. Our major raffle for the year, $400 worth of hockey gear donated from Just Hockey, was drawn on the day and was won by a very excited Jane Bowness from Easts Juniors.

Grand Final day for turf divisions was on Saturday 11th September at the State Hockey Centre. Trophies and medallions were handed out as well as shirts for our President‟s 12 players.

All trophies and shirts were supplied by 4 „n 20 and we thank them sincerely for their sponsorship.

All of these functions could not run smoothly without the help and support of all the management members. I would like to thank them all sincerely for their work and support during the season and especially Kathy Duggan for all her guidance, support and help which I couldn‟t have done without. Also last but not least, Joyce Proctor for all her help and support during the season.

JUNIOR CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

The 2004 season has come to a close and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following members of Junior Management, Judy Mewing, Karen Hickling, Marg Brown, Chris O‟Sullivan, Libby Roberts and Ros Marshall. Unfortunately Jennifer O‟Sullivan resigned from the Committee due to work commitments and I thank her for her work on Junior Management during the past few years.

These wonderful volunteers have formed a fantastic team and the effort they have put in during the season has been outstanding. Thankyou ladies.

An integral part of the season is representative team selections. A big thank you must go to these people for a job well done, and as we would all agree, not an easy one at that.

Selectors: These members put a lot of their time and effort into selecting teams. After the great success at the Championships and at Southern Cross it proves that the selections were pretty spot on.

Under 15 Selectors: Pam Patteson, Sue Brough, Kelli Robinson Under 13 Selectors: Pam Patteson, Lynn Quirk, Teresa Kuss Under 11 Selectors: Donna Hobbs, Bev Ragonesi, and the assistance lent by GK Coach Greg Shirvington

Thank you for a job well done.

Fixtures and Grading: Pam Nitarski, Bev Ragonesi, Di Young, Wendy Stephens

These ladies have a very tough job every year. The beginning of the season is the most frustrating and stressful with the J1 & J2’s grading which spans over two weekends. Then comes the hard job of going over every team registration form to grade teams at Downey Park. This a very time consuming job, thank you ladies, you should be commended for your effort and commitment into Fixtures and Grading.

Minkey and Modified seems to get bigger every year. Thank you to Peter Kuun our Minkey/Modified co-ordinator for doing a great job. These are our future players so we must continue to ensure they are learning the correct skills and having FUN.

Thank you to all these people who do a great job in keeping BWHA going.

Admin: Kathy Duggan & Stacey Williamson Development: Sharyn Simpson, Marg Dilger & Sue Barsby Saturday Office: Louise Alexander Sports Trainers: John Thomas, Kirily Bowden and Chris Kingston-Lee Uniform Officer: Rhonda Bentley & Jenny Tidey Time Steward: Courtney Mackay (DP), Jenny Heron (SHC) and Kathryn Duggan (BP) Canteen: Nerieada Gill & Staff

During this year I have been very fortunate with the opportunity to meet many parents and players and have been very impressed with their comments and offers of help. That is one of the great things I love about junior sport, enjoying a laugh with new and old friends. After all, this is what hockey‟s all about.

Thank you to all parents, players, Coaches, Managers and spectators for making Junior Hockey a great success.

Desley Mackay Chairperson/Junior Liaison Officer

39 ______BWHA 2004 Annual Report Junior Section JUNIOR SECRETARY’S REPORT

With Junior Management being manpower-strong from the beginning of the year and with the continuity of most members on the team, there was a much easier start to the usual very busy hockey season.

The start of the season always has its challenges with many summer sports still to finish when hockey needs final registrations in order to grade teams and do all the necessary organisation for games to commence in an orderly way. Another challenge is the ongoing need for verification of information, such as birth certificates and clearances. It is my recommendation that a registration should not be accepted and entered on the database without all the required documentation, and club secretaries should be able to ascertain if a player has changed clubs or not played before or recently- the questions are there on registration forms to get this information. Certainly club secretaries are volunteers just as we are, and often do not want impediments to people “signing up”, however I feel we need to be more diligent and insistent on this matter.

Thankyou to my fellow team members on Junior Management for their friendship and hard work. Those Tuesday night meetings in the middle of winter seem so long ago now! Thankyou also to the staff of BWHA for their patience and hard work, often far beyond the call of duty. I would also like to thank “senior” management members for understanding and advice received throughout the year.

May 2005 be another successful hockey year with the new national database hopefully providing even more streamlining of procedures.

JUNIOR TREASURER’S REPORT

2004 has been a great year of Hockey. Having the majority of management positions filled during the planning stages and before the start of the season helps a great deal.

Hopefully we can go one better this time and have all positions filled for 2005. We definitely started on the back foot last season and I did not fully realise this until I became aware of the work that had been done before I took up my portfolio.

In my second year as Junior Treasurer I am still amazed at the amount of work put in by Volunteers in this organisation. As we all know it is becoming harder and harder to find people with the time to lend a hand. I don‟t know that many sporting bodies the size of BWHA still have a volunteer treasurer. So I would like to sincerely thank Mary Cockings for all the hard work she does.

This year we had some additional costs to cover with the introduction of payment for umpires and mentors on Junior turf. Whilst this cost was passed on to players the positive feedback from this programme has made it all worthwhile. Thankyou to Kathy Duggan for the conception and management of this programme. Last year we did spend significant time at Management meetings pondering the solution to the number of complaints received about this issue. This programme therefore has freed up valuable management time to plan and improve in other areas.

We started this year with a system in place to make the Match Secretary‟s job and my job a little easier. Libby and I made adjustments to last year‟s spreadsheets with the hope of improved record keeping and to make it a little less cumbersome. Thanks to Libby for a job well done and enabling me to keep on top of fines this year. As clubs will be aware very little fines were issued last year but this year numerous fines have been issued.

Thankyou to the clubs for the timely manner in which they paid their invoices. The number of follow-ups and reminders was limited. Once again it is due in the main to the good work done by BWHA admin staff, so from management and the clubs I thank Kathy and Stacey. Thanks also to the development team of Sharyn, Marg and Sue for your support throughout the year.

It has been an enjoyable year due largely to the team effort of Junior Management. Thankyou to all of you for your friendship and enjoy the short break before it all starts again.

JUNIOR COMPETITIONS REPORT

Junior Management‟s aim in 2004 was to continue to develop an electronic spreadsheet for recording all match statistics and producing a weekly points table. Many thanks must go to Clinton and Karen Hickling for their work on the 2003 template in the off-season to produce a single page improvement on the 2003 model. The template was sent out to all clubs with the administration folder disc in the preseason and with the Junior Club Secretaries assistance we were able to hit the ground running with all teams entered and ready to produce our first points table by the end of week two.

Entering the information each week was significantly sped up by asking the match cards to be submitted with the team lists in alphabetical order. Many thanks to club secs and junior council reps for their assistance in getting team managers to write the cards up this way. For some clubs the use of pre-printed team stickers once teams stabilised removed the stress of writing the cards up correctly and eliminated card fines. A template on Microsoft Publisher was developed for the stickers using the team lists from the junior spreadsheet and this was made available to clubs requesting it. As an added benefit to those recording the match stats these stickers actually sped up the process of entering the match information even further as it was very easy to tell at a glance who played and did not play. It is planned at this stage to include the template in the 2005 administration pack.

The completed spreadsheet for each team was electronically returned respectively to each club providing clubs with a comprehensive set of playing statistics for each of their teams from U11 to J1 for the 2004 season. With the introduction of the Hockey Australia Database in 2005 the process of electronic recording will hopefully be streamlined even further.

The entering in of information each week for each player of the 98 teams in the Junior competition is a huge job and it would not have been possible to produce the weekly points table without the assistance of each member of the junior management committee in spending some of their spare time each Saturday assisting in getting the information into the computer as quickly as possible. Many thanks to Desley, Judy, Karen, Marg, Chris and Ros and to Louise on the Saturday competitions desk for their help and support through the season.

Libby Roberts Junior Match Secretary

MINKEY & MODIFIED CO-ORDINATORS REPORT

The season started with a guides day for all coaches. Questions were raised, and the coaches had an idea of the way the season would be run. Margaret Dilger also ran a level 0 coaching course for all coaches.

13 Minkey teams and 25 Modified teams were registered for the year. The first two weeks were used as a grading for Modified teams and after that they were split into two pools of 12 & 13.

From what I could see by the smiling faces every Saturday morning, it is clear that the season was enjoyed by all and the standard of hockey got better week by week. The games were always played in good spirit and almost everyone that played and watched understood that it was always about having fun and not about who won or lost.

A skills day was held on the last day of the season for all teams. This was followed by a sausage sizzle that was prepared by the parents and everyone could relax knowing that another great season of hockey had come to an end.

I hope that everyone will be back playing again next year!

Thanks

Peter Kuun Minkey & Modified Co-ordinator

41 ______BWHA 2004 Annual Report Junior Section JUNIOR UMPIRES REPORT

GRASS Being on Junior Management for the first time this year was certainly an eye opener. There are so many circumstances that arise from week to week that one would assume it would just be fixed as I am sure most parents think it‟s that easy. All decisions made by Management were nutted out with a great deal of thought and communication and I am sure that is why the season seemed to run so smoothly.

One can only hope that there will be more volunteers in 2005 to lighten the workload of the volunteers that we have to date.

The other role that I responded to late in the season was Junior Umpire Convenor for the Downey Park side of the Juniors. There were just so many young ladies wanting to be tested this year it was a great position to be in, unfortunately there wasn‟t enough time to be able to have everyone badged. Hopefully the testing in 2005 season will start quite early. I take this opportunity to thank the following Senior Ladies for coming out on a Saturday morning and testing the dozens of umpires.

Heart-felt Thanks go to: -

. Melanie Craig . Donna Gallagher . Gaye Henderson . Robyn Sutherland . Lesley Bennett . Jenny Kiel

On the turf umpiring/mentoring & testing for the J1/2 competition held on Friday nights were organised by Kathy Duggan. A big Thank-you for all your efforts on a job well done!

The standard of umpires this year was much higher than previous years and that obviously means Clubs are doing their homework at Club level in developing their umpires at a young age. I do hope the trend continues as it makes the understanding of the game so much easier as well.

Margie Brown Grass Umpires Convenor

TURF We trialled a new Mentor/Assessing Program for all junior turf umpires in 2004. Clubs were asked to submit the names of umpires for their Junior Turf Games and BWHA appointed Mentors/Assessors who were in attendance at all games to assist the umpires. Some clubs embraced this concept wholeheartedly, while others did not. Hopefully all clubs will see the benefits in 2004 and make a concerted effort in 2005 to utilise this opportunity to develop umpires within their club.

To run the program, each turf player was levied $20.00 for the season to pay for the Mentoring and Assessing. Thirty qualified umpires were approached to act as Mentors /Assessors with 6 umpires willing to become involve. My special thanks to Sonya Fisher, Kylie Patteson, Caroline Schomberg, Jennie Thompson, Vicki Wilkinson who ensured all games were covered during the year together with myself.

With over 30 Umpires badges being awarded, it was indeed a great result. It is only through training and support that we can continue to encourage people to umpire our games. The $20.00 levy per player also saw for the first time a small payment of $10.00 per game for umpiring at the turf. This in no way compensates an umpire for the time and dedication it takes to improve, but at least it acknowledges the importance of their role and helps to offset the costs involved in umpiring.

Of the 30 people badged many had been umpiring for years without recognition for their work. It is time we passed through the negative thoughts of gaining an umpiring badge – if clubs utilise and train all players, no one should have to do more than their fair share. BWHA will always rely on volunteers to umpires – it is important that we instil in our players, that they have an obligation to give back to the sport through umpiring. You cannot have a game without umpires. If every player was prepared to do their bit (and the sideline people kept their mouths shut) then our sport as a whole would grow.

BWHA cannot teach all players to umpire, as they can‟t teach all players to play. This is a club‟s responsibility and as much time spent on learning to play at club level should be spent on learning to umpire as well. It has been very encouraging to see a significant number of clubs now embracing this concept and they will see the rewards in just a very few years, I am sure. For all the other clubs, you cannot continue to stick your heads in the sand – you must put umpiring development in the same priority box as player development. Only with a hand in hand approach will the game continue to grow. To assist clubs, I wrote during the off- season a basic umpiring plan targeted at practical club based umpires training. Many clubs have utilised all or some of this, and hopefully the sharing of experiences will allow this basic document to grow to contain many processes to improve our umpiring development.

Congratulations to all people who tried for an umpires badge this year or started the journey to be a capable umpire. May you continue to be a vital and appreciated asset in your club and in BWHA. 42 ______BWHA 2004 Annual Report Junior Section

46 ______BWHA 2004 Annual Report Junior Section BALL PERSON STEWARD REPORT

Season 2004 was again a quiet year for our Ball Attendants. They were required to attend at the following events: -

 Southern Cross League  Premier League  BWHA Turf Grand Finals  Australian U15 Championships

Marcelle Young from Norths has taken on the role as Ball Person Steward for 2005 and membership of the Ball Attendants Club at the moment is on the rise. The word is spreading and this year eight (8) new girls have been trained. The training was completed at Colmslie, Burringbar Park and Downey Park on Division 4 and DP 1 games. This should lead to an increase in the number of club juniors involved in this rewarding and fun experience. I am sure the new girls would agree that they really do have the best view in the house when attending at the various championships.

I would like to thank the girls and their parents for their support and making themselves available for the season. Also, to all the girls who are retiring I thank you for your work, commitment and fun for the last four (4) years.

A special thank you to Mary Cockings and Lyn Thomas on the Technical Bench who always ensure that the girl‟s energy levels never drop too low on the longer days at the championships at Colmslie. (Those red frogs usually do the trick).

I wish Marcelle all the best for next year. Her enthusiasm and numerous ideas have already got me thinking that we will have the best dressed ball girls in Queensland next season.
