She may, however, rest proudly on her record of achievement, which is stamped indelibly in official annals and fondly remembered by her associates at the time. By natural extension, her leadership qualities came to light in a number of ways, notably as Producer of the annual hockey revue, supporter of the Dig for Victory Movement after its founding by the late Dos Hansford (nee Drouyn), The Patriotic Fund of Australia, the original Women's Sport Appeal (now QWASC), and latterly, The Australian Red Cross Society. With an eye for local talent and its encouragement, she brought many a shy performer to the footlights in hockey revues, and resultantly to a mutual sharing of the joy and laughter for which these concerts were noted. "Dig for Victory" meant fresh supplies of locally produced vegetables for military hospitals, steady donations of jams and other items, hospital visiting, food parcelling and last, but not least, comradeship. Lena describes herself as a very ordinary hockey player, usually to be found on Neptune's right wing, waiting for passes which came but seldom and were invariably missed when they did. Hockey umpire, administrator and key organiser - Lena recalls her time spent with woman's hockey as "wonderfully happy and productive years". Thank you Lena Dobbin 5 BWHA 2004 Annual Report Senior Section PRESIDENT’S REPORT As my first season as President comes to a close I take a moment to sit back and reflect on the past year. Unsure of what I had got myself in for I soon realised that only a very small number of volunteers and minimal paid staff allows the association to run, it has been a huge learning curve. I have thanked these people on numerous occasions and I will continue to thank them in years to come. But what is the best way of saying thank you as a member of our association would be to volunteer to help these people – lighten the load. With our world evolving into a time precious society it is imperative that we have more people joining the team and spreading out the jobs. The season was a good one for BWHA as we came away with all Division one Hockey Queensland Championships bar the Veterans and U13‟s. This obviously is the result of hard work by the development department led by Liz O‟Connor, junior and senior selectors, coaches and the players.
