5 PRESIDENT’S REPORT OCTOBER 1997 – JUNE 1998

This is an unusual year with the President’s Report in two parts due to my retirement in June. For anyone casting an eye back on last year’s report it will be evident however, that I had hoped to be able to step down even earlier in March. The intention was to get the new constitution which is so badly needed to take BWHA into the new millennium in place by then. This task proved bigger and more complex than I first thought, and as the season progressed and got busier and busier there was less and less time to devote to it, so I accepted the inevitable of it not happening during my term as President, and submitted my resignation in June. I still think it is most important that this document be completed. It must not be rushed, as it is crucial to get it right. I hope that I will be able to be part of the committee, which completes it.

The most exciting part of the year for me was certainly the success of our representative teams. To win the State Championship in every age division, demonstrated just how successful BWHA as an organisation has become. This success has not come without hard work, and many people have contributed to the development of our players through talent identification, development programs, and clinics. If you look back through our Annual Reports you will see their contributions. There was a time not all that long ago, unbelievable though this may seem now, when BWHA did no talent I.D., no organised player development, and no organised coach education and development. Our under age representative teams then were not strong, and Brisbane players seldom made it into the State Open team. It is pleasing therefore that this has now changed, and all the hard work has paid dividends. My congratulations to all the Brisbane Representative players for 1998 and my thanks to the many players who came out for the massed teams photo. It is a wonderful memento, and one that I will always cherish.

BWHA again ran a large summer competition in six-a-side, mixed, and veterans. This gave more people a chance to play on the artificial surface and also added a social dimension to the turf game, which is largely missing during winter fixtures. It also is a big boost to the revenue of the State Hockey Centre.

The Southern Cross Hockey League again ran successfully at the start of the season and may be copied by the men’s sections of the SEQ associations. (They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery). Congratulations to the Schweppes South Brisbane Scorpions on winning this year’s League.

BWHA gained two new staff members this year. Sharyn Simpson replaced Sue McLatchey as BWHA’s Regional Coaching Director. The work Sue did for BWHA during her time as our first RCD was invaluable, and her contribution to BWHA’s coach and player development cannot be overestimated. BWHA are very fortunate to have someone of the calibre of Sharyn Simpson as Sue’s replacement. I would like to wish them both every success in their new roles. Allyson Skuse came on board as the first full time senior administrative officer when Rosanna Pappalardo left after completing her traineeship. Allyson has many of the advanced office skills needed to keep BWHA progressing and will be a great asset to the association.

If I have one regret this year it is not being able to be the first President of the association to host a State Veteran’s Championship. It was very sad that we had to give the 1998 event to Ipswich. I hope relations with the State Hockey Centre improve in 1999 so that BWHA can do the right thing by our veterans and have a home Championship without incurring a loss to the association.

6 In writing this report I have been tempted to look back and comment on my time on the BWHA Management Committee, and my terms as Junior and Senior President. I have decided not to do that, except to thank all the people who have worked with me for the good of BWHA, those who have supported my ideas for change, and those who have given me their trust and friendship. I am not of course the only person retiring from the Management Committee this year. Sue McLean who has been the BWHA Honorary Secretary for the past four years has advised she will not be standing as either BWHA Secretary or for the Management Committee in the coming year. I thank Sue for the work she has done in a difficult role. She brought fresh and original ideas to the Management Committee which while not always as appreciated as they could have been, were nonetheless beneficial for the association. The incoming Management Committee will miss her vitality and unique perspective on matters.

Looking to the future there are still many things to be done in BWHA. One of them is to employ a Regional Development Officer to recruit players and keep the numbers up. Another is to improve the umpiring standard in line with the improvements in player and coaching skills that have been achieved. BWHA has excellent umpires at the very top, but the standard falls off very quickly through the grades. A lot of thought has gone into this in recent years, and many ideas and schemes have been tried to improve the standard. Until BWHA employs a full time Umpiring Director however, it will always be a problem. The top umpires have to earn a living during the week, do their own umpiring on weekends, and often train and play as well. To expect these busy volunteers to run umpire education and development programs in their spare time in order to achieve the improvement needed is ridiculous. The same can be said for promotion of the sport. BWHA has relied on a hit and miss system of volunteers with a bit of training, or willing but untrained volunteers or office administrators to do what is a specialist full time job, and then complained about the lack of promotion and media profile. BWHA is not alone in this. All the hockey associations are just as bad. However, BWHA has long been a leader in developing and improving our sport, e.g. BWHA employed a coaching director before the Queensland association did. Perhaps BWHA can lead the way with this also. Of course all this requires money, and that will be the challenge for Management in the future, i.e.not taking the easy option and saying it cannot be afforded, but finding new ways to find the money needed to make the improvements necessary for progress.

In closing I have enjoyed my involvement with BWHA. It has not all been plain sailing, but the good times have by far outweighed the difficult ones. I wish the association and the incoming Management Committee every success in the future.

Ronda Nix. Past President.

July – October 1998

Success has been the hallmark of Ronda’s years as President, culminating winning all 1 st Division State Championships. This has been achieved by her vision. Another successful vision has been that of the Southern Cross League, which I believe, has played a large part in seeing more of our Brisbane players being successful in Queensland teams. I wish to thank Ronda for all her years and sincerely hope her involvement with Brisbane will continue, albeit in a smaller capacity.

7 Reading Ronda’s report, I agree we have issues to face. A major one being the constitution, which I believe, we may have in place by the end of 1999, a new constitution for a new millennium. With the lack of nominations for positions this year, especially for Junior Management, we may be forced to make changes to restructure the decreasing community involvement in running hockey. Other issues are Division 1 and umpiring, both are being addressed. On 4 October we had a meeting with the clubs to discuss the vacancy in Division 1. The decision was made to not include an out of Brisbane side but to encourage and assist the Brisbane clubs to field a side. The discussion also centered on dual registrations, the imbalance in team standards and possible solutions. I felt this was a valuable morning as it gave the clubs the opportunity to put forward their point of view and for management to listen. My thanks to all who attended early on a Sunday morning.

Umpiring is another emotive issue. A Level 1 umpire-coaching course has been written and plans are in place to run courses as soon as possible. Once we have people who can teach people to coach umpires, we should be able to increase our numbers, thus decreasing the workload on the few. Again, here I take Ronda’s suggestion on board, that of a paid Umpire Director. We are moving in that direction by having a staff member, dedicate set hours each week to the task.

At this stage I believe my biggest challenge is that of gaining sponsorship dollars and media attention. The two go hand in hand. 1998 has been very disappointing with little money being received in the way of sponsorships. Streets, who presented our medals in the past chose not to renew our contract and we are currently in negotiations with both Schweppes and Rixon. Today, companies are reflecting sponsorship dollars on tangible commercial advantages, not warm feelings. As fewer people volunteer, we need money to pay people to run the organisation, but sponsorship and membership fees are limited. This is our challenge – to find ways to develop with less money and less volunteers.

My thanks to everyone involved in BWHA and I look forward to meeting those of you I do not know. I wish all players, umpires, coaches, managers, officials and administrators a relaxing and enjoyable festive season and hope to see you all again next year.

Meg Brodie President

SECRETARY’S REPORT

The Season That Was 1998

Another successful season has been completed highlighted by the impressive statistic of BWHA winning every Queensland Championship namely: Opens, Veterans, Under 18’s, Under 15’s and Under 13’s, the Under 11’s won the Southern Cross Competition (the only representative event they compete in). Well done to all representative players, it is the first occasion that one association has won all Queensland Championships. BWHA Player Development Programs initiated in recent times are “bearing fruit”. An historical photograph of all BWHA representative players was taken at the end of the season and this was presented to the retiring President, Ronda Nix, at the BWHA Awards Dinner. The photo will also be framed and placed in Downey Park Clubhouse.

8 BWHA had a change in personnel. Sue McLatchey, Regional Coaching Director, took up a position with the Office of Sport and Recreation whilst Rosanna Pappalardo, Administration Assistant, moved into further administration work. We were sad to see these valuable people move on and BWHA wishes them well in their new endeavours. After advertising in our BWHA Newsletter - “ The Hockey Net ” and the Courier Mail we received many exciting applications and after interviews and the necessary processes, BWHA gained two capable and enthusiastic staff. We welcomed Sharyn Simpson, Regional Coaching Director and Allyson Skuse, Administration Officer in early April.

President’s Cup Day was not held this year, as a suitable time could not be found on the calendar. Since Division 3, DP1 and DP5 have ten teams in each division, it takes longer to complete a round of matches causing a clash with National Hockey League matches in June / July. It was decided that the President’s Cup winner would be the team with the highest points at the completion of the first round of fixtures, in the case of DP Masters two rounds, since there was only four teams in their division. (See Records Section for winners).

St Andrews Hockey Club celebrated their 75th Year in 1998. Congratulations to the Saints, they celebrated their season by getting all senior teams in Grand Finals, winning four divisions of the six contested. Winning Division 1 was fitting in their 75 th Anniversary year.

BWHA introduced a new representative tracksuit from Rixon Sportswear. Representative player’s apparel now consists of tracksuit, rugby top, shorts, polo dress shirt and cap.

Five editions of the BWHA Newsletter “ The Hockey Net ” were published during the season.

An interesting statistic from 1998 was that the Judiciary Committee did not meet to hear any “incident” reports. Well done to all players, you obviously behaved yourselves in accordance with the umpire’s rulings.

Pre Season Events

∗ Hockey Queensland’s AGM was held in November 1997 where Jenny Tidey (Kedron Wavell / BWHA stalwart) was made a life member of the organisation. Congratulations Jenny on your 20 odd years of service to hockey. It is great to see that are still involved at some level or other. Jenny’s main accomplishment in 1998 was to have a 50+ Queensland teams compete in the Australian Veteran’s Championship, as well as her achievements as head of the Grounds Committee at Downey Park. ∗ Rasey Park Clubhouse and Field 13 toilet block have been a target for graffiti vandals over the last few years, when artist, Michael Neumann approached us, we accepted his offer to “paint” these buildings. Impressive hockey scenes now adorn these buildings and so far they have not been vandalised. ∗ Summer competitions were organised by BWHA at the SHC. Tuesday - six-a-side women’s as well as men’s competition, Wednesday - Veterans and women’s six-a-side, Thursday - mixed full field and Friday - mixed full field games. Approximately 24 mixed teams, 8 Veterans and 30 six-a-side teams competed from October to December with fewer teams opting to continue on into January / early February. ∗ A change in Insurance Companies providing player insurance took effect on 1 January 1998. Hockey Queensland negotiated for Jardines Insurance to take over from IEA Insurance.

9 ∗ BWHA computers were upgraded to Windows 95 and Office 97 to accommodate our database as well as E-mail and a Web site, which is in the process of being set up. ∗ BWHA & BHA withdrew the canteen facility at the SHC due to unsatisfactory negotiations. ∗ The Office of Sport and Recreation did a sports survey on “Why girls drop out of sport?”, BWHA cooperated with this survey and hopefully details will be supplied to us in due course so as we can institute any changes which will assist players graduate from the juniors into the seniors to reduce our drop out rates. ∗ BHA, BWHA in association with SHC held a joint meeting in late January to discuss turf fixtures, problems with turf fixtures and plan for the 1998 season at the SHC. ∗ Brisbane Softball association would like to have the “cabbage patch” for a second international diamond. However with the growing numbers of hockey players, especially in the junior ranks, there are not enough fields at Downey Park and Rasey Park. BWHA cannot afford to lose the two hockey fields in the “cabbage patch”. ∗ A new initiative from the Federation of International Hockey (FIH) is to have a “no white below the knee” policy for international matches, having its foundation in the fact that a white hockey ball is difficult to see on television with the added problem of white shoes, socks and goalkeepers equipment. Therefore you will notice, on the rare occasion that you see hockey on television, the coloured goalkeepers pads, they are quite striking! ∗ February saw the selection of the Under 21 Queensland side. Congratulations to those players selected, their names appear in the Records section of this report. ∗ Hockey Queensland in association with Queensland Events Corporation successfully bid for the 1999 Joint Champions Trophy to be held at the SHC in June 1999. It will be exciting to watch the top six women’s and six men’s teams in the world here in Brisbane. Let’s hope we get both the Golds!! The 1999 Joint Champions Trophy Limited has been set up to run this event. ∗ Hockey Queensland, in association with Air New Zealand, has also gained the “Golden Oldies” tournament, to be held in October 1999.

MARCH

∗ Once again the Southern Cross Hockey League was successfully staged, the finals being played at the SHC in March. Congratulations to the South Brisbane Scorpions who won this competition defeating Toowoomba Chill . Full details of this League are in the Records section. It is a valuable competition which provides an opportunity for young players to play with and against more “seasoned” players. It is also good from a spectators point of view, watching three top class matches on a balmy summer evening. Gold Coast Gypsies opened their turf at Labrador on the evening of Southern Cross League games at the Gold Coast on 26 February 1998. Toowoomba have now put down a “wet turf” during the off season. ∗ BWHA turf fixtures commenced on Sunday 15 March with 25 turf teams registered in three division. Turf players and their spectators this year paid to enter the SHC, a players season pass was available for $10, players could also pay a daily entry of $1. ∗ The SHC held its AGM on 19 March where Gerry Garard was again elected as Chairman of the Board with Mary Cockings BWHA’s representative on the SHC Board. ∗ The Queensland Academy of Sport hosted a team from Japan and played 3 matches. ∗ Under the watchful eye of Jenny Tidey, clubs provided willing workers to the Downey Park and Rasey Park “working bees” to get the ground and facilities in order for the start of the season.

10 ∗ Ball girls or rather Ball Attendants were called for the Southern Cross League and are now in serious training for the Champions Trophy in 1999 under the expert guidance of Marilyn Chatfield. ∗ Hockey Queensland held its Annual Awards Dinner at the Sheraton Hotel. BWHA recipients of awards were Renita Garard (Sportswoman of 1997), Neil Hawgood (Coach of 1997), Michele Arnold (Umpire of 1997) and Angie Skirving (Rookie of 1997).

APRIL

∗ BWHA grass fixtures commenced at Downey Park on Saturday 4 April with 62 registered grass teams in eight divisions. This season the Downey Park players contested divisions known as Downey Park Division 1 through to Downey Park Division 7 and Downey Park Masters. The name change hopefully will give more credence to grass fixtures. ∗ Monday Masters competition commenced matches on 20 April with six teams registered. ∗ A Brisbane Under 18 Invitational team played matches against Rand High School (South Africa) winning 8 –1, the second match was washed out. ∗ Gold Coast hosted the Australian Under 21 Championship with Queensland, coached by Jill Smith - Easts (BWHA’s 1998 Coach of the Year), finishing second to Victoria. Lyn Thomas attained Australian Level 2 Technical Officer at this Championship. Alyson Aleksic qualified to umpire at National Women’s Hockey League games. ∗ The first Southern Cross tournament was for Veterans being held in Gympie on Sunday 19 April. The Under 18 1 st Southern Cross was held in Toowoomba on 26 April. ∗ Sharyn Simpson, RCD, fulfilled another one of her roles of being manager to the Hockeyroos during their Test Series against Korea. ∗ Hockey Queensland purchased and moved into new premises at Colmslie (near the SHC).

MAY

∗ The Queensland Open Championship was held in Mackay with BWHA having two teams, both in Division 1, represented. Brisbane 1 won the Championship in sudden death extra time against Toowoomba, the game being 1-1 at full time. A re-run of the Southern Cross League final! Vicki Perna (Easts) was named “Player of the Final”. Brisbane 2 after forfeiting their play off match for 5th/6th position, which was to be played on grass finished a creditable 6 th , after a subsequent appeal,. ∗ Wet weather was a problem in May with the last timeslot being washed out in early May and having to be replayed in early July. Fixtures on 16 May had to be postponed due to inclement weather. ∗ Gold Coast was the venue for the Under 18 2 nd Southern Cross on Sunday 17 May. The Veteran’s 2 nd Southern Cross was held the following weekend also at the Gold Coast. ∗ The last weekend in May saw the Queensland Veteran’s Championship held in Ipswich. Brisbane was set down to host this championship for the first time but swapped with Ipswich due to negotiation problems with the SHC. BWHA will now host this tournament in 1999. Six Brisbane teams were entered in this championship - the most number of teams ever entered by Brisbane. Brisbane won all four divisions, the country centres were not impressed. Brisbane 1 won Division 1, Brisbane 2 won Division 2, Brisbane 3 won Division 3 and Brisbane 5 won Division 4. Teresa Kuss (Ascot) was named “Player of the Championship” and Robyn Andersen (Easts) named “Player of the Final” (see Records Section for full results). ∗ The World Cup was held in Holland with finishing with the Gold Medal. BWHA was represented with Renita Garard - Valley (Co Captain and BWHA 1998 Highest Representative Player).

11 JUNE

∗ A week after the six veterans’ teams competed in Ipswich four Under 18 teams went to the Gold Coast. Joyce Proctor, uniforms convenor, is to be applauded for a job well done. It was not a very good season for Joyce with so many tournaments close together, however she did a sterling job and all players looked impressive in their representative uniforms. ∗ Polytan, after much negotiation by Chairman Gerry Garard, replaced the turf at the SHC (we are now onto our third turf at Polytan’s expense), only Field 1 was replaced in June with Field 2 being replaced over the summer season. ∗ Four teams entered in the U18 Queensland Championship over the June long weekend on the Gold Coast. Brisbane 1 won Division 1 with Belinda Cameron (Easts) named “Player of the Final”. ∗ Ronda Nix, President, retired on 23 June - June Council Meeting citing ill health and her daughter’s wedding as reasons for her retirement. Good luck with your retirement Ronda. ∗ Meg Brodie, University, was instated as President for the remainder of the season, welcome aboard and good luck. ∗ A veteran’s dinner was held to celebrate Brisbane’s success at their championship, also to fundraise for the Queensland representative players. BWHA long service medals were also presented to Graham Wakefield (15 years), Carolyn Schomberg (10 years) and Keith Nix (10 years). ∗ BWHA leased a new photocopier in June, hopefully more programs / newsletters etc can be produced “in house” in the future. ∗ The Queensland Scorchers team commenced their participation in the National Women’s Hockey League with games in Hobart, Gold Coast, Warwick, Sydney, Canberra

JULY

∗ ASSA hosted a Women in Sport Breakfast “The Art of Leadership”, an informative session which was also an opportunity to network with other sports and exchange ideas. The guest speaker was Sallyanne Atkinson former Brisbane Lord Mayor. ∗ Downey Park and SHC was the venue for the Northern Conference University Games hosted by QUT on 5 - 9 July. ∗ The Australian Veteran’s Championship was held in Darwin with many Brisbane people represented. Australian representative honours to Robyn Andersen (Easts) named co-captain and Noreen Walton (Commercial) to play in Kuala Lumpur in September. Special mention must be made of the 50+ Queensland team who won their division in style. They were known as the “Legends”. Many Brisbane players were in this side. Jenny Tidey as a manager and player - spent 14 minutes on the field for 2 goals - not a bad average! ∗ The Australian Under 18 Championship was held in Adelaide with Tracey O’Connor, (BWHA Junior President) as Manager. Hope Brown (Valley) and Leanne Hammond (Commercial) were named in the Australian Junior Youth Team for a 3 Test Series against New Zealand in June. ∗ The final of the National Women’s Hockey League was held in Brisbane in late July with the Queensland Scorchers losing the final to NSW Arrows after leading 3 - 0 at half time. The full time score being 3 - 3 and NSW Arrows winning in sudden death extra time. ∗ Mrs Phemie McDougall (Mrs Mac) finally retired from her official hockey duties. Mrs Mac stepped down from her role as treasurer of the Queensland Women’s Amateur Sports Council. A farewell dinner was held at Downey Park on July 21 with Ruby Robinson plus many others thanking her for her stupendous efforts over many years. Thanks Mrs Mac you have been appreciated.

12 ∗ HQ, BHA and BWHA called for the resignation of the Board of the SHC citing dissatisfaction with the running of the SHC. However the Brisbane clubs’ support for the Chairman and the Board thwarted the attempted coup and BWHA and BHA were forced to withdraw their motion of no confidence in the current SHC Board.

AUGUST

∗ A collection of old hockey equipment and apparel was packaged up and sent to Tonga to assist in the development of hockey there. ∗ The last round of fixtures was held at Downey Park on Saturday 22 August, the Minor Premier and President Cup Trophies were awarded at the completion of matches for the day.

SEPTEMBER

∗ September 5th saw the hosting of the BWHA Awards Dinner at the Brisbane Convention Centre. The Presidents Medal was awarded to Nicole McMahon (St Andrews), Player’s Player - Sarah Ryland (University), Rookie of the Year - Emma Elliot (Kedron Wavell) ∗ Downey Park Grand Finals were held on Saturday 12 September with the awarding of Premier Trophies. The best & fairest player was selected in each division thereby comprising the Presidents XI. Long Service Badges were awarded to Jenny Heron (10 years) and Lesley Schoenwald (10 years). ∗ Saturday 12 September saw the joint BWHA and BHA Grand Final Day at the SHC. Congratulations to the winning teams - St Andrews 1, Commercial 2 and St Andrews 3. Kelly Free (St Andrews) was named Division 1 “Player of the Final”. ∗ Our Brisbane Under 16 team won the Australian Under 16 Division II Invitational Championship held in Toowoomba in the September school holidays. ∗ The Australian Hockeyroos won the inaugural Gold Medal in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The season cannot end without thanking the people who are an integral part of BWHA. All people who assisted in any way small or large are vital to the running of our amateur sporting organisation, BWHA. To all these people I hope you have enjoyed your involvement and you are justly satisfied with your results, and more importantly hockey wishes that your support continues into the next century. The office staff in particular I thank for their time and efforts – Kathy, Rosanna and Allyson have all contributed immensely to the day to day running of Downey Park office. For the management team thank you for your support and efforts over the last 4 years. This year is definitely my last as Secretary. I wish the next Secretary all the best and I will always be available to assist in any way I can.

Finally I must thank Ronda Nix the past President, for her time and support over my four year period as Secretary. You must be congratulated for the effort you have put into BWHA over the years and especially as President where you vision, foresight and professionalism have placed BWHA is a very strong position.

13 I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and enjoy your off season holiday!.

TREASURER’S REPORT

It is always difficult to write my report without the final figures (as I say each year) but this is not possible, as the report has to be written before the end of our financial year.

Thanks to all committees for their co-operation in maintaining expenditure within budgets. Also my sincere appreciation to all clubs for their co-operation and courtesy throughout the season.

Downey Park bar showed a slight improvement this year thanks to Liz Lobb, Angela Coleman and Caroline Schomberg. Downey Park canteen and Rasey Park canteen maintained steady figures but we can’t expect major increases in this area, as our numbers have not increased vastly since Division 3 went to the State Hockey Centre. Thank you Kath and Dave and your helpers. Jim Northcott once again, has done an excellent job in the Hockey Shop but profit is down this year as we are competing with much bigger outlets such as A-Mart. Still we need Jim and the Hockey Shop as a necessary service to our players.

15 John Bigg has worked hard this year to maintain the fields and it is hoped John will be with us for the 1999 season.

Our major outlays this year has been the purchase of a new computer and leasing of a new photocopier. We also had to purchase grand final medals and trophies, as we did not receive the usual sponsorship from Streets. At the time of writing this report, Schweppes sponsorship for 1998 has not been received but Schweppes have advised that they will be continuing their support of BWHA in 1999.

I would also like to express my sincere thanks to BWHA management for their support throughout the season. Lastly I wish to thank Kathy Duggan and Allyson Skuse for putting up with me for another season. Especially Kathy who has the big job of putting the monthly figures into the computer and coming up with the correct answers.

A fully audited set of accounts will be distributed at the BWHA Annual General Meeting, which will detail the financial position of our association. I look forward to presenting it.

I hope to see you all again next year. Have a safe and happy Christmas and all the best for 1999.

Mary Cockings Honorary Treasurer

16 SPONSORSHIP AND MARKETING REPORT

BWHA would like to thank their sponsors for the 1998 season

17 GROUNDS COMMITTEE REPORT

Downey Park

With the rain we have had and the fact that this winter didn’t get any morning frosts, it was great to play our finals this season with green grassy fields.

There is always a problem with the level of fields, but with the sinking of the area in parts and the overuse of the park I cannot see any easy way to solve the problem.

Thanks once again to our part time groundsman, John Bigg, who spends most days at the park. Earlier this season we had a problem with the length of grass on the fields. With the BCC only mowing the park 15 times a year, this isn’t enough for the playing of hockey. John decided to mow the fields with our hockey mower. This means 2-3 days a week mowing.

Thanks to Bev Broadfoot who helps John mark the fields at the beginning of every season. During the season, John has repaired the grandstands, trimmed trees, repaired nets, lots of maintenance odd jobs on the clubhouse, as well as the park, marked the fields fortnightly, and picked up all the rubbish around the park after our Saturday hockey fixtures.

Hopefully we may be able to do a little work on Field 1 over the off season and get parts of the park aerated. Thanks to Mary Cockings for looking after our field’s budget and for dealing with the relevant BCC departments.

In November 1997, the Queensland Women’s Amateur Sports Council in conjunction with BCC produced a book on the history of Downey Park. This very interesting book can still be purchased.

I would also like to thank Mrs McDougall who retired from QWASC for all her hard work on the fields at Downey Park over approximately 40 years. It’s the work done by her and other ladies who have made Downey Park such a wonderful place for women’s sport.

Hoping to see you all back at Downey Park, Rasey Park and the State Hockey Centre in 1999.

Rasey Park

After a very successful working bee, the Rasey Park fields were ready for our Minkey and Modified players.

Thanks to the parents who arrived early one Saturday morning in April after a week of rain to rake the park so the girls could play. After the rain and the BCC missing 3 weeks of mowing, John also started using our small mower every week or two on these fields.

A few young men offered to professionally graffiti the clubhouse for the cost of the paint. This has greatly improved the look of the buildings as the locals had made a real mess of it previously.

18 We are hoping to have the upstairs remodelled a little during the off season with the cupboards out of the downstairs Downey Park office.

Thanks to Matthew Duggan for looking after the canteen every week, Kath Kenealy for keeping up the supplies and to the junior parents who helped with nets and corner posts etc.

To John Bigg, once again, thanks.

FIXTURE AND GRADING COMMITTEE REPORT

1998 started with affiliations from 12 clubs to make up Divisions 1, 2 & 3 of 8, 8 and 10 teams.

Pine Rivers requested a challenge game against Norths 2 at the end of the 1997 season. They won this game and also had another game before the commencement of the 1998 season. Pine Rivers were elevated to Division 2.

Division 1 and 2 both had 8 teams and Division 3 had 10 teams so continuing the very popular decision made last year to have a very closely contested Division 3 and a division for clubs to “blood” their younger players into the turf grades.

Before the season proper commenced, Norths withdrew their Division 1 team. Then a few weeks later Norths requested a game to see if they could be reinstated in Div 1. With a team registration of only 9 fulltime players and a couple of part timers they were given a game against Kedron Wavell and BWHA Management and the Fixture & Grading Committee denied their request, thus creating a bye in Division 1.

The draw was finally completed and a meeting was set up with Brisbane Hockey Association and the State Hockey Centre to organise the running of turf fixtures at SHC. This meeting ironed out a few of the anomalies. The draw was then given to clubs to help organise their season. But in true “Turf” style, games were disrupted because of National Hockey League games, the turf being replaced and the bye in Division 1 making this a very disjointed season. But ladies, please remember it is only going to get worse as we head towards the 2000 Olympics.

This year President’s Cup was not played as such, but BWHA Management decided, due to time constraints that the team placed first at the end of the first round would win this trophy.

Congratulations to all teams who were Minor Premiers and Premiers. Also congratulations to the teams who made it into the semis and finals, some really tough, close games were played.

Thank you to Lyn Thomas for all her help and tireless work throughout the season and to the BWHA Management for their support this season.

19 Finally, thank you to Marilyn Chatfield and Robyn Andersen for all your support, expertise and good humour required to get the turf season on as even a keel as possible. Good luck to the Fixture and Grading Committee in 1999.

CONSTITUTION COMMITTEE REPORT

I am able to report the rewrite and upgrade of the Constitution is to happen. Due to some administration hiccups, conclusions are now ready to proceed. The first meeting of the Committee will be held on the 6 th of October 1998.

The new Rules and By-Laws will not be available for this years Annual General Meeting and if the Committee persons are re-elected progress will be continued through the off season. We propose to have a draft copy available to Clubs for comments etc in the early part of next season.

We then hope a Special General Meeting will be called to pass the amended Rules of Association etc, for implementation at the following Annual General Meeting.

DOWNEY PARK CANTEEN REPORT

The canteen ran well this year as it usually does, however sales were down due to McDonald’s opening on Lutwyche Road and the J1’s playing their games at the State Hockey Centre. I suppose this is progress and we may have to look into changing the menu next season.

We had a great U11 Southern Cross carnival in August and the staff worked hard all day. The canteen staff are very nice girls as they have all been over the years. How Jenny manages to work the roster around their games and umpiring year after year amazes me. Jenny has done a wonderful job and will be missed next season. Good luck to whoever takes on this role.

20 SOCIAL SECRETARY REPORT

1998 was a very quiet year as far as social activities were concerned. Our main claim to fame this year was making what seemed like millions of sandwiches for various functions held at the State Hockey Centre. My very grateful thanks to Liz Lobb and her mother and father, Pam and Brian for their untiring help and joviality, which made everything seem like fun. I would also like to thank Margie Brown, Mavis Rowe and Lyn Thomas for always stepping into the breach when I needed help.

Also, I must thank Mary Cockings and Kathy Duggan for help with transport of the food to the State Hockey Centre.

Joyce Proctor

EQUIPMENT & UNIFORMS SECRETARY REPORT

Well, what a year with all championships held within a couple of weeks of each other, I had uniforms everywhere. The poor team managers weren’t game to touch anything and were told to have the uniforms washed and back at Downey Park within a couple of days of the completion of various championships. I think I only made a couple of mistakes and I apologise to the girls who were on the receiving end of this.

The juniors have been outfitted in the new tracksuits etc. We still have an assortment of old apparel which we hope to sell. Just before the end of the season we had a photo taken of all the 1998 representative teams which turned out very well. A complete list of uniforms and equipment is kept in the office.

REGIONAL COACHING DIRECTOR (RCD) Including Player Development & Coaches Association

BWHA has recorded by far one of its most successful periods. Winning all Championships in the Division One Category and other tournaments including the Southern Cross League and U/16 Australian Invitational Division 2 Championship. This is a significant achievement especially considering the amount of change that has occurred within the BWHA Association this year. One such change was my appointment towards the end of March. I cannot speak highly enough of the excellent work my predecessor Sue McLatchey has done during the past 6 years. Sue has initiated many great plans during this time, one such was the 4Year Development Plans. I have become very familiar with these plans over the past 7 months. The amount of work and strategic thinking that has gone into the compiling of these documents was enormous. Unfortunately I have been unable to fully work towards many of the goals set down in the plan and it will be one of the many objectives I will aim to achieve in 1999.

Since commencing at the end of March, I must admit that a large part of my time has been prioritising those tasks I believed to be the most urgent. I also adopted the approach that this year was always going to be a transition year and one where no great changes would be instigated by me, at least until I got a much clearer picture of the directions of BWHA and its members.

21 1998 has been a historic year as mentioned earlier and I believe that these achievements have occurred because of the huge amount of groundwork that Sue and many others have done, particularly in the key areas of Player Development and Coach Education. Whilst I think that what we have achieved is fantastic, there is still much more to improve and expand upon during 1999.

Areas of concern that I see we need to work towards altering are:

• the Coaches Association (getting it back on track, working for its members), • improvement and refinement to the Development Program, • encouraging more people to “have a go” at the many vacant BWHA positions • offering better support to Coaches within BWHA • increased communication with the Clubs. • Insuring that there is less talk and more action

Having said all of the above, I have been very fortunate to reap the benefits of the many dedicated volunteers who worked hard during 1998.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

This is by far our most memorable year with all Teams from U/11 to Vets winning all Division One at the State Championships and our other teams achieving very commendable results. We have a record number of players selected in Queensland teams, squads, Best 16 and Talent Squads.

One initiative commenced this year was the Development Program for U/11, U/13/,U/15 and U/18 age groups. Whilst it was a huge undertaking, most feedback has been positive and encouraging and it is providing a greater number of players exposure to turf and specialist coaches. The Program will run again next year but to a slightly different format so as to better address the different levels of players needs. A huge thank-you to Meagan Thomas who worked tirelessly to get the program up and running in this introductory year.

From these programs, our Representative teams were selected to participate in the State Championships. A number of players have also been invited to participate in the Development and Satellite programs being held during October 1998.

We have been fortunate enough to play matches against visiting teams such as Rand Park High School (South Africa), Gold Coast, and the Illawarra Academy of Sport.

Women's Hockey Australia also allowed us to make use of the turf for our Modified Skills Day and Junior Coaching Clinic prior to the Women’s National League Finals. Many thanks to Shauna Ure for all her hard work, taking on and fulfilling the position of Minkey/Modified Co-ordinator.

Thanks to our Player Development Fundraising Committee, we were able to send a team for the second year to the WHA U/16 Invitational Tournament Division 2 in Toowoomba. This experience for our Development Squad members was most beneficial, exposing them to the many facets involved in tournament events. 18 teams from all over Australia competed and after playing 8 matches we were

22 undefeated and went on to win the Tournament. Many thanks to Anne Carson (Manager), John Bozuwa (Video Operator), and Shauna Ure (Umpire) for their assistance during the week.

Appropriate opportunities such as the above are being constantly looked at and assessed in regard to providing the right sort of development experiences required, versus the huge cost involved in sending a team. I strongly believe it is this type of environment that affords players the best possible grounds for development. Certainly, I will be looking at a range of other such tournament in the future to evaluate their worth from a development point of view.

COACH EDUCATION/DEVELOPMENT

Unfortunately, we were unable to emulate last years highlight of providing Assistant Coaches for every Under age representative team. For those Coaches and Assistant Coaches who were selected, thank-you for your continued support and efforts during 1998. Next year I will be looking into a way of providing financial support to Assistant Coaches so that they can attend the State Championships without being out of pocket. It is in this environment that their learning opportunities occur and their support of the team is most required.

No Coaching Scholarships and Apprenticeships were given this year. This does not mean that there were no worthy nominees. I truly believe I am not in a position yet to make informed decisions about such an important issue. In 1999 I will expect to remedy this situation and be more aware of the many great Coaches we have that would more than ably fulfil the criteria.

One of my most pleasurable jobs this year was Co-ordinating 2 Level One Hockey Coaching Courses. One Course was held at the University of Queensland with 36, 3rd and 4th year PE teachers. I was encouraged by the number of students at the end of the course who expressed that they would feel more than able to introduce hockey into whatever school they were teaching at. The more PE teachers we can educate about Hockey, the better chance more students will be exposed to the game.

In the meantime we were able to Award Junior Coaching Awards to the following People:

COACHES ASSOCIATION

The Coaches Association was significantly affected this year by Sue McLatchey’s resignation, Gina Archer’s increasing work commitments and Julie Dwyer’s Resignation. It was agreed that this year we would be able to achieve only small amounts without proper membership and leadership in 1998.

Despite this disappointment a very small band of board members and new members achieved the following:

1. 2 Workshops 2. 1 Mail Out 3. 1998 Junior Coach Awards 4. Recommendations for Representative Coaches 5. Conducting one Level 0 Coaching Course 6. Attendance at the Representatives Coaches Feedback Meetings 7. Setting - up a very comprehensive resource library (due to the efforts entirely by Sandy Smith)

Thank you to all those who have expressed an interest and desire to assist the Coaches Association in 1999. All people coaching Club teams will have compulsory membership in 1999 and we are still working towards identifying a representative from every Club to be on the Coaches Council. This I believe will improve information sharing, and communication between BWHA and its members. I look forward to the challenge next year of increasing awareness of the association and its participation within BWHA.

24 SCHOOLS

This is an area that I remain a little at odds with in providing the best support to the schools in developing hockey within their schools. Whilst, I am very aware that I could work only at coaching in schools (such is the demand), I believe that until a Player Development Coach or Education/Development Officer is able to be employed, then this responsibility has to fall back upon each individual club’s agenda. There has been a small band of dedicated workers who have taken on the role as Coach/Liaison Officers, going out introducing students to hockey. I would also like to make mention of Kelly Free who has assisted in this role and advised schools of my availability.

I will continue to involve myself with schools in particular on the South and East Side of Brisbane where player participation is extremely low. I also see great benefits in being involved with Aussie Sport Expos, Vacation/After-school Care Programs and areas where there is a greater number of schools involved.

My experience to date is that most clubs have established school links and have reaped the benefits. However, the clubs always need to be mindful of maintaining this link.

RESOURCES

We have a very organised ‘LIBRARY’ due to the sole efforts of Sandy Smith. There is a wealth of information just waiting to be utilised. More videos will be purchased in the near future and with the expanding use of Video Technology as a Coaching aid, it will be been given a high priority.

I’m very aware that “The Library” is in need of greater promotion of its resources and availability to all coaches.

THANK YOU’S

There are so many people who have been of great assistance to me in my first 7 months in the job. An encouraging and understanding word in my ear has been more valuable than many imagined. I expect many people would not realise the value of their support in making my job so much more enjoyable and rewarding.

My first thanks go to Sue McLatchey who has been of great assistance and is someone I know who is always available to help me. All the coaches, who coached representative teams, club teams, and at the Development Program, GREAT JOB! What better evidence that you did a good job, the results speak for themselves.

Thanks to the BWHA Junior and Senior Management Committees, whom I hope will always keep an open mind in regard to being flexible to the ever-changing needs of the players and thus the Association. Thanks also for your understanding and appreciation of allowing me to participate as a Manager for WHA. Until this year, I was totally unaware of your enormous efforts over a long period for very few rewards. It is this unselfish behaviour that allows so many to achieve so much without true and proper recognition. Thanks also to Joyce Proctor who has assisted in so many various ways providing lunches, uniforms and making sure I ate more than muffins some days.

25 Thanks to Kerrie Richards, Satellite Coach for your continued dedication and time given to our ever expanding numbers of Talented Players. Other Coaches who have been more than helpful also deserve special mention, Nikki Taylor, Kim Ireland, and Kim Thomason.

My thanks to the Player Development Fundraising Committee for your enthusiastic approach to fundraising, which allows our players in Satellite and Development Squads access to many more experiences that would other wise be costly. They are Dick Roebuck, Bev Sunderland, Janelle and Steven Kohn, Jim & Rae Hawthorne and Ros Cameron.

And last but by no means least many thanks to my co-workers Kathy Duggan and Allyson Skuse for their huge tolerance of my endless questions about everything. Also for assisting me in my job when at times it all seemed a little overwhelming.

I look forward to the next 12 months and working with all of you again in 1999.

Merry Xmas!

UMPIRES BOARD REPORT

The season of 1998 has been hectic but a positive one in the umpiring arena. The board, being Michele Arnold, Alyson Aleksic and myself really struggled with time to do all of the things that needed doing throughout the season. We were assisted yet again by Kathy Duggan, Lyn Thomas, Sue Reid and Cheryl Kann. Without the help of these people, a lot of things would not have been done. Thank you.

Due to the unavailability of members of the board due to National Hockey League and work commitments, we were unable to do as much testing as needed this year. However, in spite of this we had a record number of umpires receive State B badges throughout the season. These umpires are to be congratulated as they were given limited feedback and basically had to go and put into practice what they had been told. To their credit, they were able to do this and were rewarded in the end. This also applied to all people who were awarded badges. Not the ideal situation under which to work but it proved to be a very positive outcome for all concerned.

The formation of an umpires association needs to be the aim of our board and its members for next season. Support for umpires needs to be increased and it is the responsibility of our senior umpires to ensure that this happens by their support and presence around the park. We need to increase this support base, as at the moment it is the responsibility of a few who have other commitments within the hockey world. We need to develop strategies to increase the number of umpires we have in the field, as well as educate and support in our junior ranks. On a negative note, there is still some clubs who are not doing their fair share of umpiring and other clubs and individuals are becoming rather tired of carrying these clubs.

26 In closing I would like to thank all umpires for their efforts throughout the season. Hope to see you all back next season.

Kim Thomasson Convenor

44 MATCH SECRETARY REPORT

Once again, another closely fought but very disrupted season has come to an end.

As in previous years, the difficult and always controversial decisions made by the fixture and grading committees at the beginning of the season have proven to be judicious. Congratulations to both grass and turf committees on a job well done. A special pat on the back to the turf committee for their efforts in scheduling and re-scheduling fixtures around the National Hockey League games and State Hockey Centre (SHC) unavailability.

Wet weather caused more than a few headaches both at Downey Park and the State Hockey Centre, but with the co-operation and understanding of the Clubs concerned, we were able to complete all fixture games in time for the semi-finals to be played as scheduled.

In 1998, most divisions were closely fought with many going to the last fixture round to decide positions in the final four or five. Despite this close competition, eight divisions had a clean sweep with the same team winning President’s Cup, Minor Premiers and Premiers Trophies.

Congratulations must go to St Andrews in their 75th anniversary year with two President’s Cup wins, four minor premier trophies, four premierships and two runners up trophies from six senior teams.

Congratulations and special thanks must go to June Snarski for her continuing efforts to keep the games on schedule at Downey Park, Mary Cockings for her diligence at the SHC and Redcliffe, and Joyce Proctor for trying to control our Monday Masters.

Lyn Thomas Match Secretary

UMPIRE’S STEWARD REPORT

As in previous years, umpiring had its ups and downs. Again substitution of umpires appears to be our greatest problem. Of umpiring complaints received, 95% concerned games where clubs had used substitute umpires. I cannot stress strongly enough that clubs must take responsibility for supplying umpires of a suitable standard.

With the instigation of a national accreditation program for umpires, umpires coaches and technical judges, it is hoped that some improvement will be seen in our umpiring stocks. I would urge clubs to encourage their members to take advantage of the courses to be run.

This year for the first time, BWHA has awarded certificates to technical judges for their efforts in controlling games at SHC and Redcliffe.

Many thanks to Sue Reid for taking over the allocation of turf umpires. This is a particularly difficult and time-consuming job because of the limited number of umpires available and the wide diversity of game times. Again, thank you to June Snarski for her assistance with coercing volunteer umpires at Downey Park.

Lyn Thomas Downey Park Umpires Steward

JUNIOR PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Well, the 1998 season is finally over. It’s hard to believe it’s that time of the year again, even though it seemed like the longest year ever. Reports are just so difficult to put together. Where do I start? Previous Annual Reports seemed like a good place to look for inspiration but all I have found is that nothing really changes. The Report of 1992 tells of the difficulties in finding fields for 77 teams, the appointment of a full time Regional Development Officer and the introduction of the CAPS Scheme were mentioned in 1993 and in 1995 I retired from Junior Management.

The Junior Committee struggled somewhat this year due to a number of positions not being filled. While things may have appeared to be going smoothly from the outside, I can assure you that the blood pressure rose to well above the recommended level on occasions.

This season we had the lot – rain on almost every Friday afternoon from April to September (and the phone calls that follow), accidents in the car park, while on-field it looked like we had a weekly booking with the Queensland Ambulance Service and a Hot-Air Balloon complete with Bride, Groom and wedding party landed smack bang in the middle of Field 1 at 8.10am on a Saturday morning. Surely, nothing else could happen!

69

As was the case in 1997, fields or lack of them were our biggest problem. Where do you put over 130 teams (including Minkey and Modified) and keep everyone happy. The 1998 season saw all J1 matches played on turf. This was a good move as far as development went but denied all but the top Juniors the opportunity to play on the artificial surface. The grass fields at Colmslie were used for five matches each Saturday and our 13C grade once again competed in the 12.30 timeslot. All of the above were met with varying responses from clubs and while opinions and even criticism are expected and accepted, viable alternatives should also be offered.

Sharyn Simpson was employed to replace Sue McLatchey as Regional Coaching Director. Sharyn’s organisational skills, sense of humour and enthusiasm were refreshing and I must say it has been a pleasure working with her.

The development program was instigated to select the Under 11, 13 and 15 representative teams and while there were some teething problems early on, it provided excellent results with Brisbane winning Division 1 in both Under 13 and 15 State Championships and Division 1 and 2 at the Under 11 Southern Cross. The fact that our 2 nd and 3 rd teams in both Under 13 and 15 maintain their grading was a bonus as it allows more of our players to compete at a higher level.

My thanks and congratulations go to all who represented Brisbane on or off the field as players, umpires coaches, managers and sports trainers. You are a credit to the Association. I must make mention of our officials at the Under 13 State Championships in Townsville who were forced to relocate the entire touring party after the first night because the accommodation proved to be totally unsatisfactory. They were put under extremely trying conditions and turned what could have been a disaster into success. I must also thank my brother Tony and his wife Maureen, (Townsville residents) who managed to find alternate accommodation for 50 people within an hour of my cry for help.

CAPS participants allowed Junior Management to sit back, relax and even watch a few games by taking control of the Under 11 Southern Cross, held at Downey Park in August. The day was a great success and credit must go to Kathy Duggan for taking over the running of the CAPS program in 1998. It is a pleasure to work with the young ladies involved in this scheme. Their families and clubs should encourage them in all endeavours connected with CAPS. They are our officials of the future.

An example of the success of the CAPS program is Minkey/Modified Co-Ordinator, Shauna Ure. Shauna has completed Step 3 of CAPS and in 1998 ran fixtures and skills days for our youngest players at Rasey Park virtually single-handed and must be congratulated on a job well done.

To thank everyone involved in the running of the Junior Association would take forever but to Jim Northcott who again looked after the Hockey Shop, Kath and Dave Kenealy and their wonderful staff who still make the best hamburgers in the business, Jenny Tidey and John Bigg who somehow manage to keep the Downey Park fields playable, Joyce Proctor who was our Saturday morning receptionist and John Thomas our irrepressible Sport Trainer, thank you all so very much.

To the Junior Committee – what can I say – you’re the best. Nothing was ever too much trouble. You continually backed me, were on hand when I was absent due to work and representative team commitments and became multi-skilled by filling every position from Umpires and Time Steward to

70 Equipment Officer at some stage in 1998. These ladies put in an enormous amount of time and effort to run the Junior Association and more often than not don’t even get to see their own daughters play. The smooth running of this Association is due wholly and solely to their efforts. My sincere thanks for their time, their efforts and their ability to laugh their way through anything.

To my Secretary, Robyn Ure and Treasurer, Glenda Street who have both decided to retire from Junior Management this season, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the two of you and wish you and your families all the very best for the future.

The 12 or so years I have spent with BWHA Juniors have been very rewarding, But I have also decided to make 1998 my last. My sincere thanks go to all I have worked with, for your loyalty, your support and your friendship. I truly value it.

To the incoming President and Committee I wish you success in 1999. My best wishes to everyone for a happy and safe off-season.

Tracey O’Connor President

JUNIOR SECRETARY REPORT

The 1998 season commenced on Saturday 22 November 1997 with a couple of new additions to the management team, Marg Tupper as Match Secretary and Patti Thorpe as Outside Venue Co-Ordinator. Unfortunately the season commenced with a lot of positions vacant and this situation did not improve throughout the whole season. This made for a very hard season for the Management team, as there were just not enough hands available on some Saturdays.

A total of 19 clubs affiliated with 101 teams playing 13 divisions. Once again it was a logistical nightmare placing all these teams on fields and trying to accommodate clubs in changing around teams into different divisions. We used the fields at Colmslie once again. The Management Committee spent an afternoon walking all over Rasey Park and Downey Park trying to ascertain if we could fit another field in at Downey Park which would have been beneficial to all clubs but to no avail. Maybe one year we may get lucky and be able to get the Netball fields near field 1. The J1 division moved to the State Hockey Centre this year, which was a logistical nightmare for the clubs as well as Management. This division is sorely missed at Downey Park but I guess we have to move with the times and give these girls every opportunity to improve their skills on turf.

We once again used 12 fields at Downey Park trying to hold one free due to wet weather at Colmslie and two fields at Rasey Park. The J3, J4 and 13A teams rotated and played one week in every three on the grass fields at Colmslie. Rasey Park played host to 30 young Minkey and Modified teams this year. I must admit I spent some time at the Minkey/Modified games this year and I was very impressed with the skills of these future players. They look so cute.

71 Sue Reid was once again Convenor of the Umpires Panel and was based mainly at Colmslie to observe our future budding umpires. Congratulations to Sue who is to become a mother this year – we wish you well and hope all goes well for you. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Alyson Aleksic for her assistance to us at Downey Park during the season. Hopefully Alyson, time permitting, will take on a more hands on role next season. Unfortunately there was no junior Umpires Panel this year but hopefully this will be rectified next season. They play a very important role with our new umpires and their development.

A new development plan was put into place this year with players being asked to nominate for development squads. This was a very good idea as it gave players who do not always make the representative teams a chance to obtain some quality coaching. Squads for the U13 and U15 representative teams were chosen from these squads. Unfortunately, the Regional Coaching Director, Sue McLatchey was not there to see her vision for these new ventures become a reality. Sue left us at BWHA to move on to greater heights with a new position. We at BWHA juniors wish Sue all the very best in her new position.

Sharyn Simpson joined us in the capacity of Regional Coaching Director and took on the role of co- ordinating the coaches for the U13 and U15 representative teams. Sharyn is to be congratulated on a job well done, as it was a very difficult role for her to take on these challenges mid way through the season.

Two of our U13 Brisbane teams travelled to the Sunshine Coast on 24 May to compete in the Southern Cross competition while the U15’s travelled to Toowoomba on 10 May.

The U13 teams travelled to Townsville for the State Championships commencing on 21 June. Unfortunately when the teams arrived in Townsville the accommodation was not up to standard and the teams had to be moved. The Managers, Coaches and other members of the representative squad are to be commended for their efforts to achieve the move as effectively and efficiently as possible. Our thanks also go to Tony O’Connor (brother of Tracey) and his family who were of great assistance to the teams in Townsville. Our U13 One team won the Championship and our U13 Two team came in 2 nd and U13 Three being placed in 7 th spot. (Valley) was named “Player of the Final” and players who were named in the Best 16 were Madonna Blyth, Lauren Richards, Kate Roberson with Ashleigh Roberson and Laura McTaggart being named in the U13 Talent Squad. Hayley Chatfield and Tanya Hoswell were awarded QLD Junior Umpires Badges.

The U15’s travelled to Murwillumbah for their Championships. Brisbane One came in 1st with Brisbane Two placed 4 th and Brisbane Three finished 5 th . Carly Lennon was named “Player of the Championship” with Tanya Dickson named “Player of the Final”. Those chosen for the Best 16 were Carly Lennon, Tanya Dickson, Emma Meyer, and Emma Elliot with Millie Russell and Emma Bozuwa being named in the U15 Talent Squad. The Senior Umpires Badge was awarded to Catherine Costello.

72 The U11 Southern Cross was held in Brisbane on Sunday 2 August and what a great day it was. The CAPS girls and boys organised the whole day and they did a wonderful job. They were a great bunch of young people and your club should be very proud of you all. The Brisbane One team came in 1 st in Division 1 and Brisbane Two were 1 st in Division 2 and Brisbane Three came 2 nd in Division 3. It was a day in which all appeared to enjoy themselves and it was noted that there is an abundance of talent coming through the ranks in Brisbane. I am sure Sharyn Simpson was disappointed she was not able to be there for the day, as we know she would have enjoyed it immensely.

Congratulations to the winners of the Minor Premiership and Grand Finals. Congratulations to Arana Ascot as winners of the “Taxation Trophy” for the best club performance and to Commercial U13A and Valley U13C being a joint winner of the “Ruby Robinson Shield” for Best Team Performance.

To our Junior Umpires who were awarded their badges, congratulations. The Most Improved Umpire was awarded to Kassie Tupper from South West United with Hayley Chatfield and Catherine Costello sharing the “Vicki Spice Memorial Shield” for the Most Promising Junior Umpire. Congratulations to all these girls and I hope they continue with their umpiring, as they should be given every encouragement for their efforts.

I would once again like to thank Joyce Proctor for assisting us, especially in opening up in the mornings. Our thanks to Jenny Tidey for her help in being time steward. There are two young ladies who also need mentioning, Kylie Jones and Chantel Rebello from Bulimba who were very generous with their time doing time keeping for us when asked. Thank you very much Kylie and Chantel.

Thank you to Shauna Ure for her role as Minkey/Modified Convenor. Shauna and Matthew Duggan who worked in the canteen made a good team. The presentation day was special, even though it rained, in that Wendy Alcorn and Kelly Free gave of their time to sign autographs for the young budding hockey players. It is really great to see these players give some time to our young players. Shauna had a very big year as the Modified Skills day was held at the State Hockey Centre this year and this was quite an experience for these young players. They were rewarded with the presence of the Scorchers players who also gave out autographs.

Unfortunately we did not have a Tours Secretary, however Lyndia Hicks gave assistance to Glenda Street in this role. Thank you to Ros Costello for helping us with the representative teams and uniforms, also for helping in many ways possible especially as Ros has a fairly hectic schedule.

To Kath and David Kenealy and the canteen staff who are always friendly and always helpful to our needs.

John Thomas, our favorite sports trainer, always with a smile and a joke and always offering to give extra. He is always a favorite when the girls travel to State Championships.

73 Marg Tupper did a wonderful job this year as Match Secretary under adverse conditions. Thank you, Marg a job well done and a wonderful support person. Thank you to Patti Thorpe who was always there to support as well and ended up taking on the task as Minute Secretary on many occasions. Glenys Harten joined us late in the season as Minute Secretary, thank you Glenys. I must also mention Kathy Duggan who is a wealth of information and is always willing to teach you, when you need to know how things work. Kathy is also a wonderful teacher and is very happy to be supportive of the young girls in whatever area of hockey they should be interested in. It needs to be said that most of the ladies mentioned also have huge club commitments, so their time to BWHA is very much appreciated.

This is my final report as Junior Secretary and two people I would like to thank so very much for their friendship and their support during the past two seasons. One is Glenda Street who was always there and always has a wonderful sense of humour. The other of course is Tracey O’Connor who was just so supportive to the new kid on the block and it was a pleasure to work with these two women. I must say I really enjoyed working with these two ladies and we did work very well as a team.

I would also like to thank the club delegates that I met through my time as Secretary. You have all been supportive even though at times it was not always possible to accommodate your wishes. However, most of you were very understanding and I wish you all well for future seasons.

I would encourage any of you who will have junior players for some time think about taking on a role in BWHA. It is not as daunting as you would think. There are lots of experienced people within management who are very helpful and are only too happy to pass on that knowledge to you. I have never played hockey, and while this would have been handy, it just requires some organisational skills and some of your precious time. It really is important next season to be able to fill the vacancies as this makes the process run smoother and in turn is a benefit to your daughters.

My very best wishes to everyone and thank you for your support.

Robyn Ure Junior Secretary

JUNIOR TREASURER’S REPORT

Little did I realise when I sat down last November to draft this season’s budget how changes occurring would affect my workload this year.

The introduction of the use of the Junior Development Program as a selection process for all the junior representative age groups was a major part of this. The payment of nomination fees by individuals, rather than through clubs, as was done in the past, caused a lot of extra work and things need to be re-considered before next season.

74 Once again our major source of funds came from the Hockey Shop. This year however, the shop has not been as successful as we had hoped. I am sure there are a number of reasons for this, especially the competitive prices available from a growing number of sporting retailers. Jim has once again put in an immense effort in fulfilling the many needs of our customers. I would like to thank him and all those players and clubs who have been so supportive by purchasing their equipment from the shop. As I’m sure you already know, all profits benefit our junior players.

We have had a few problems this season and not just with the weather, due to a change in accommodation on the U13 tour to Townsville, some loss will have to be absorbed. On the other hand, despite the rain and varying venues which caused most clubs at least a few problems, the number of umpiring fines and forfeits actually decreased again. (Only 21 umpires failed to appear and 9 forfeits). Not a bad result when you realise that about 1800 umpires did turn up.

As the time has come for me to retire from Junior Management, I take this opportunity to thank Clubs for their co-operation and understanding and to all past members of Management for their support and advice over the past four years.

To our current committees, both Junior and Senior, I thank you for your friendship and support. It has been greatly appreciated.

Finally, to the incoming committee I wish you every success in the next season. I’ll be in the crowd on the sidelines.

Glenda Street Junior Treasurer

MINKEY/MODIFIED REPORT

What a huge season we had this year! To start the season off our clubhouse had a face lift which looks great thanks to a group of local graffiti artists.

Our competition this season consisted of 20 Modified teams and 10 Minkey teams, which is a huge increase in players. We had difficulties because of this large number in the allocation of fields and time slots. Unfortunately the only alternative was to have rotating times which was unfortunate for some clubs, as this was not convenient for some coaches as they had other commitments. If only we could find some more fields.

We tried something new this year in that our Modified Skills day was held at the State Hockey Centre at Colmslie. The morning went very well with most comments being very positive. Sharyn Simpson, our Regional Coaching Director, put in a lot of hours to get this event up and running and was very helpful in getting together some helpers to help with the lay out of the fields. The players were rewarded with a visit from the Scorchers players who were very happy to provide autographs on posters given out after the skills were completed.

75 Our other major event was our presentation day. I organised fun games for the girls, which included parents and coaches participation. All seemed to enjoy this and much fun was had by all. We were lucky enough to have the presence of Kelly Free and Wendy Alcorn for the presentations and I thank them very much for their time on the day.

I would like to thank Robyn Ure for her time and help when I was not able to be there and Sharyn Simpson for all her help on the skills day and for being so supportive during the season. I would also like to thank the Junior Management for all of their help and support. Of course, last but not least, Matthew Duggan who worked in the canteen.

I hope all the girls enjoyed the season and learnt new skills in our great game of hockey.

Shauna Ure Minkey/Modified Convenor

HOCKEY SHOP REPORT

The Junior Division of BWHA operates the Downey Park Hockey Shop. The aims of the shop are to provide hockey players and visitors to Downey Park:

••• top quality hockey equipment at competitive prices; ••• general service and advice on hockey equipment; and ••• generate income for the junior division of BWHA

During the 1998 season, we believe we have fulfilled these aims.

In respect of prices for the equipment on offer, the junior executive negotiated favourable terms with various suppliers, and then set price margins that assured our customers the best retail prices in Brisbane. This pricing policy will continue, so it is hoped that more clubs and individual players will take advantage of those prices in the 1999 season.

In terms of service, we were able to help many customers with their requests for specialist and specialised hockey equipment. Because of our arrangements with suppliers, we were able to fulfill customer’s orders within one or two weeks, and save them many dollars on normal retail prices.

We have built up an extensive range of hockey equipment catalogues, and hope our customers will make even greater use of this service in the 1999 season.

At the time of drafting this report, the 1998 season still has three weeks to run. Based on current trends, it is estimated the junior division of BWHA will benefit from between $3,00 - $4,000. Estimated Hockey Shop figures for the 1998 season are:

Gross Profit $7,000 Less Expenses $3,500 Net Profit $3,500

76 This money will be used by the juniors to promote, develop and support the young players, and potential players, of the great sport of hockey

I would like to thank the junior executive and BWHA staff for their cooperation and support during the 1998 season. I would also like to thank the clubs for providing “volunteers” to assist in the shop during the season.

Thank you to our customers, the players, their families and friends and even the young ‘tinkers’ who try to ‘nick’ bits and pieces from the bargain box. You have all contributed to the fun of doing something to contribute to the great sport of hockey.

The shop is now ready for business for the 1999 season. You want hockey equipment – you call me. Place your early orders, and I will provide.

Jim Northcott

CAPS REPORT

Challenge Achievements and Pathways in Sport

Twenty young people during the 1998 season completed levels (steps) in the CAPS program in Brisbane a list of these individual awards are at the end of this report. These young people gave valuable time and expertise to both their clubs and BWHA.

The skills that they develop in this youth leadership program are beneficial to them, their clubs and BWHA and should not be underestimated. Our young people are the future of our sport both on and off the field and while every effort should be put into their playing development, equal emphasis must be placed on the whole person. The majority of our players will not play for Australia or Queensland, but many could be developed into exciting and innovative administrators, umpires, sports trainers’ etc. We must work very hard to ensure all players are able to develop their innate talents in whatever area.

By expending a small amount of effort to develop these young people, we are not only assisting them, but also creating a pool of trained and enthusiastic volunteers of the future, for our clubs and association. We all know volunteers are the endangered species of all sports and every effort must be made to avoid their extinction.

We held a taping and S.M.A.C course in 1998 for our CAPS participant’s and other interested BWHA members. There were well supported and I thank John Thomas for his time which is always so generously given.

For the past four years our Minkey and Modified area has been coordinated and run by past CAPS participants who have gained their Sports Leaders Award, Sheryl Hockaday, Melissa Brown, Taryn Kelly and Shauna Ure. These girls should be congratulated, but more importantly we must all recognise that CAPS is working to develop vital volunteers for our sport.

77 Again in 1998 the Under 11 Southern Cross was coordinated and run by our CAPS participants. With a small amount of guidance this group of young people ensured the day was a complete success performing all the duties associated with this event. Every CAPS participant involved should be justly proud of their efforts, I know the BWHA Junior Management and visitors were very impressed by your hard work.

All clubs should have a CAPS Coordinator to encourage all players to become involve. Only through your efforts can CAPS fulfill its role in developing our young people. Is your club involved in CAPS? If not why not? I am only too happy to assist anyone in establishing CAPS in their club and can only encourage you to do so.

WOMENS HOCKEY AUSTRALIA UNDER 16 DIVISION II INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT TOOWOOMBA September 27 - October 3 1998

BWHA was able to send a team for the second year to the Under 16 Division II Australian Invitational Tournament. The team was selected from players being considered for the 1998 Development Squad. 25 players attended the selection trials for two weeks and 16 players were selected including 2 Goalkeepers.

The team trained 4 times including selection trials before departing by bus to Toowoomba on September 27. The tournament consisted of 18 Regional Teams from all over Australia. The Tournament is a great opportunity for players to be given further experience in such a unique competition.

Our accommodation at St Ursula's was most suitable for our needs and Manager Ann Carson did a fantastic job keeping us all organised. The boarding House arrangements where ideal having all meals prepared for use and including lunches.

After completing the 8 round matches, Brisbane were undefeated and finished 1 st in their pool and qualified to play in the Final against local team Toowoomba. After some fairly nail biting minutes they where able to score off a Penalty Corner in First Half. Despite some continuous attack from Toowoomba our defence remained solid.

Congratulations, to the girls for their performance during the tiring week and winning the Championship for the first time in its 6-year history.

Many thanks to the Player Development Fundraising Committee especially Bev Sunderland, who where able to raise funds and decrease the cost of the trip for the team.

Also, thanks to Ann Carson (Manager), John Bozuwa (Video Assistant) and Shauna Ure (Umpire) who assisted myself as coach during the week.
