For anyone casting an eye back on last year’s report it will be evident however, that I had hoped to be able to step down even earlier in March. The intention was to get the new constitution which is so badly needed to take BWHA into the new millennium in place by then. This task proved bigger and more complex than I first thought, and as the season progressed and got busier and busier there was less and less time to devote to it, so I accepted the inevitable of it not happening during my term as President, and submitted my resignation in June. I still think it is most important that this document be completed. It must not be rushed, as it is crucial to get it right. I hope that I will be able to be part of the committee, which completes it. The most exciting part of the year for me was certainly the success of our representative teams. To win the State Championship in every age division, demonstrated just how successful BWHA as an organisation has become. This success has not come without hard work, and many people have contributed to the development of our players through talent identification, development programs, and clinics. If you look back through our Annual Reports you will see their contributions. There was a time not all that long ago, unbelievable though this may seem now, when BWHA did no talent I.D., no organised player development, and no organised coach education and development. Our under age representative teams then were not strong, and Brisbane players seldom made it into the State Open team. It is pleasing therefore that this has now changed, and all the hard work has paid dividends. My congratulations to all the Brisbane Representative players for 1998 and my thanks to the many players who came out for the massed teams photo. It is a wonderful memento, and one that I will always cherish. BWHA again ran a large summer competition in six-a-side, mixed, and veterans. This gave more people a chance to play on the artificial surface and also added a social dimension to the turf game, which is largely missing during winter fixtures. It also is a big boost to the revenue of the State Hockey Centre. The Southern Cross Hockey League again ran successfully at the start of the season and may be copied by the men’s sections of the SEQ associations. (They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery). Congratulations to the Schweppes South Brisbane Scorpions on winning this year’s League. BWHA gained two new staff members this year. Sharyn Simpson replaced Sue McLatchey as BWHA’s Regional Coaching Director. The work Sue did for BWHA during her time as our first RCD was invaluable, and her contribution to BWHA’s coach and player development cannot be overestimated. BWHA are very fortunate to have someone of the calibre of Sharyn Simpson as Sue’s replacement. I would like to wish them both every success in their new roles. Allyson Skuse came on board as the first full time senior administrative officer when Rosanna Pappalardo left after completing her traineeship. Allyson has many of the advanced office skills needed to keep BWHA progressing and will be a great asset to the association. If I have one regret this year it is not being able to be the first President of the association to host a State Veteran’s Championship. It was very sad that we had to give the 1998 event to Ipswich. I hope relations with the State Hockey Centre improve in 1999 so that BWHA can do the right thing by our veterans and have a home Championship without incurring a loss to the association. 6 In writing this report I have been tempted to look back and comment on my time on the BWHA Management Committee, and my terms as Junior and Senior President. I have decided not to do that, except to thank all the people who have worked with me for the good of BWHA, those who have supported my ideas for change, and those who have given me their trust and friendship. I am not of course the only person retiring from the Management Committee this year. Sue McLean who has been the BWHA Honorary Secretary for the past four years has advised she will not be standing as either BWHA Secretary or for the Management Committee in the coming year.

CelebratingCelebrating 11/11/1995 - 11/11/2020 Foreword Letter from current President Steve Stewart Hockey Queensland today spans 23 Associations and includes Master’s and Indoor Hockey, but that has not always been the case. In the 1990s a group of people had a vision of unification for our sport to enhance its management and provide opportunities and pathways for its athletes. Their efforts were rewarded in 1995 with the birth of Hockey Queensland (HQ) as a unified male and female State Sporting Organisation. The concept of HQ was first seriously proposed in 1993 by Daphne Pirie and Jim Quaite, the Presidents of Queensland Women’s Hockey Association and Queensland Hockey Association respectively. Through their diligence and the efforts of others, including the Steering Committee of Dennis Binnington, John Giles, Julie McNeil, Elsie Quaite and Janne Ellis we have evolved into the HQ of today. I consider the longevity of people’s involvement in hockey as one of the most endearing features of our sports culture, as many of the people who contributed to the creation of QWHA, QHA and of course HQ, are still involved in Hockey in Queensland. I would particularly like to thank Janne Ellis for her commitment to Hockey Queensland. Janne was there at the beginning and remains with us as our ‘historian’ and jack of all trades. Janne your contribution is appreciated. Go #TeamQLD, Steve Stewart Celebrating 25 years of Hockey Queensland On the 11th November 1995, Queensland Women’s Hockey Association and Queensland Men’s Hockey Association merged to form Hockey Queensland Incorporated. On the same date in 2020, Hockey Queensland Limited celebrates the silver anniversary of the amalgamation.
