4 BWHA 2006 Annual Report PRESIDENT’S REPORT After much deliberation and some considerable encouragement I decided to stand for the position of President of BWHA late last year. Lisa-Maree Jones, the incumbent President, could not guarantee her availability at the necessary level to hold the President’s position in 2006. Lisa has remained on management in the position of Vice-President to assist and pass on the valuable information that she has acquired in her two years as President, which has been much appreciated by me.

When making my decision I needed to take into careful consideration the roles I already hold with Hockey Queensland as well as my work and home life. I have long been a playing member of BWHA and have held other volunteer positions in the past. Taking on the role of President was a major step not to be taken lightly.

Having taken on the role, my first year has involved watching and listening to understand the workings of BWHA. It is evident from the steady growth and development over the years that BWHA has been governed in a professional manner and I needed to understand the workings before being able to offer constructive ways to enhance the association.

Much of the planning was already completed for 2006 when I took over the President’s role. This has allowed me the opportunity to watch this large and vibrant association cater for its members. I have asked many questions, offered suggestions for improvement and met many wonderful volunteers in the process.

2006 has by no means been an easy year. Two BWHA staff members left at the beginning of the year (just prior to the commencement of fixtures). We are caught in the midst of a severe drought affecting the quality of the fields at Downey Park, despite the efforts of our Grounds Committee. Using the majority of the 12.30pm game timeslots at Downey Park for junior games also left some seniors disgruntled. A fifth division was added to the turf, although the anticipated Redcliffe turf was not online during the season. The condition of the playing surface of field 2 at the State Hockey Centre was a constant source of complaint, but the alternative of changing turf games to grass was not supported by the membership.

We held two members’ forums towards the end of the season, to discuss issues identified at Council that affected the association and our members. We are now working during the off-season to ensure our governance is more clearly documented and communicated. The first area to be addressed is the criterion for positions, expanding on the roles listed in the By-Laws and giving members, nominees and appointers better guidelines to ensure the best possible people fill every role required by BWHA. We are also building on the past work of Lisa and Mary Cockings in continuing to update our financial procedures in line with legal requirements and fully developing our financial planning for the future.

It must be said that I now have a greater appreciation for the whole picture, the worth of our unsung heroes, the volunteers at all levels. These volunteers ensure that we can conduct fixtures for our near 3000 members each week, offer opportunities to develop as players, coaches, umpires, officials and administrators and promote hockey in a positive light to the local community.

The management committees on both Junior and Senior Management plus our volunteers on numerous sub- committees and positions are the reason BWHA continues to grow and develop, and I would like to thank you all. In particular I would like to thank the Senior Committee for their support, honesty, integrity and assistance throughout the year: Lisa, Mary, Kathy, Desley, Jenny, Meg, Lyn, Sonya, Bronwyn and Liz.

I thank all members of BWHA for what they bring to the association and ask that you continue to support all our volunteers, who ensure you have a fixture to play.

In 2007, under the guidance and direction from members, I look forward to contributing to the ongoing development and enhancement of BWHA for all.

Karin Walduck

VICE PRESIDENTS REPORT

This year saw me take a smaller role at BWHA due to a new career path that saw me out of the country during the early part of the season. While this had its’ draw backs, it also gave me an opportunity to reflect on BWHA from a distance and refocus on some of the issues I could not complete during my time as President.

5 BWHA 2006 Annual Report During the year, I undertook a number of “special duties”, developing a new Web Page, helping with the employment of our new administration assistance, continuing with the updating of the financial reporting, working with Aimee to organise the BWHA Dinners and now I am rewriting all position descriptions. The position descriptions will be an ongoing work, which will bring BWHA governance to a higher level.

Special thank you to the executive. Karin Walduck has done a superb job in her first year in the position and I hope she will continue in the role for many years to come. Mary continues to keep BWHA Financial position very strong and Kathy works to bring all our recommendations to the clubs. Our Management works tirelessly throughout the year as their reports would attest, it is great to be a part of such a dedicated group of individuals.

I really enjoy being part of BWHA and look forward to my association again in 2007.

Lisa-Maree Jones.

SECRETARY’S REPORT

As always our planning for season 2006 started in October 2005. To ensure planning was effective our nominee for President Karin Walduck attended some of these sessions to gain some background for the role she was about to undertake.

Karin has been a wonderful asset to BWHA in her first year, she has a strong work ethic and great interpersonal skills which she has used to great affect during the year. While not having a large knowledge of the workings of BWHA her vast experience in hockey as a player and administrator at Queensland level as well as her highly regarded professional standing has stood her in good stead. She is not afraid to ask questions and has put measures in place to ensure the correct governance of BWHA. Under her guidance this will continue to be worked on through 2007. Our AGM saw Karin elected to the Presidents’ position for the first time and she has held the position with distinction in her first year.

After the AGM many of our Management took a well earned break, which started with a Christmas Function at “Earth ‘n Sea” at Wilston. This was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. The office then closed for four weeks to allow the office staff to recharge their batteries ready for a busy 2006. Little did we know just how busy 2006 would be….

The year started with a Management Meeting and first Council Meetings (Junior and Senior). Administration Folders were distributed, new club officials welcomed and a change to the by-laws to allow the Juniors to have 6 teams in the turf divisions if required passed. This did not eventuate, but the provision was made if required.

We had anticipated that the Redcliffe Hockey Turf would be online near the start of the season and planning had been made based on this. Unfortunately, the Redcliffe Turf did not eventuate until the end of the season, so additional timeslots needed to be found to accommodate our new division 5 on turf. Based on requests from clubs, the new division 5 allowed clubs who did not already have a turf team to have their first opportunity to field a team in this division. All four clubs in this category took up this opportunity and made a great success of it. The restructuring of our turf divisions to five divisions of eight teams and the limitation of turf fields to play on, placed a significant pressure on our Competition Committees. Congratulations to Jenny Heron, Sonya Fisher, Mary Cockings and Lyn Thomas for all their hard work in this area to ensure all fixtures where played with suitable umpires, technical officials and sports trainers. The reports from all these sections are contained in the following reports.

With Southern Cross League being played in January and February and then the in Melbourne, the AHL was delayed and impacted more significantly on our Division 1 teams in March and April. This was negotiated, but also during this time our Administration Trainee Stacey Williamson and Regional Development Office, Margaret Dilger resigned to take up other positions. Margaret continues to be involved in hockey as the Townsville Regional Coaching Director.

With Sharyn Simpson working with the AHL team, this left a huge hole in the Development area, which was filled by necessity by Sue Barsby. Thank you to Sue for putting in the additional hours early in the season to ensure all Development items went ahead as planned. Sharyn on her return from the AHL with Sue then filled the RDO roles, a huge undertaking. Thank you and well done to both Sharyn and Sue.

With the season starting, being two staff members short was a nightmare. While we finally got everything done, a special thank you to the clubs for their patience and understanding must be extended. I received many offers of help for which I am thankful, and I must make special mention of Karen Hickling who came into the office on many days to assist me. Special mention also of Libby Roberts for taking the reigns of the Database and 6 BWHA 2006 Annual Report making sure it happened. There was no way that we would be as advanced as we are without Libby’s tireless work in this area, it was impossible for me to devote any time to the database at the start of the season and Libby ensured that it went ahead. A small gift of thanks was presented to both Karen and Libby at the BWHA Presidents Medal Dinner – many, many thanks for your time and efforts during the season. As usual Mary also lent a hand during this time, for which I am thankful.

Once the season was underway, after interviews we employed a new Administration Assistance. Aimee Eckermann was welcomed to the team. Aimee does not have a hockey background, but has an enthusiasm for sport and has been a great asset to the team. Aimee has together with her normal duties looked after the BWHA Dinners in 2006 and travelled as a Team Manager to the Under 13 State Championships in Hervey Bay. A very steep learning curve, which she has undertaken with a smile.

It was identified during the year at our Council Meetings that a number of issues troubled our members. A list of these items were collated and two members forums were held towards the end of the season to give people an opportunity to voice their concerns and opinions, so Management could better plan for the future. The comments raised at these forums have been used to guide Management during its’ planning meetings.

BWHA has a proud history. We continue to have gatherings of our Life and Past Members in our clubhouse during the season. Birthdays are normally the best reason to have a get together and it was great to see so many people attend these informal get togethers. BWHA owes these people a great debt for the work they did in the past, to make BWHA what it is today. Joyce Proctor and Elma Brennand are working to continue restoring and recording our history and we thank them for this work. Our Life Members assisted by completing and returning a questionnaire to ensure we have recorded correctly the roles they have played in our association. A special thanks to June Snarski in the Control Room who not only keeps the Downey Park fixtures going each week, but is the focal point for the Life Members who frequently come to Downey Park on a Saturday.

Oh, but for some rain! As with much of eastern , drought is having an enormous impact on our sport. With level 4 restrictions now in place and not knowing when the flooding rains required to finish the drought would come, it was a difficult task for our Grounds Committee his year. With no facility to sprinkle the fields, we watched with despair as the fields turned browner each week. Management collated the injury statistics to ensure that the fields did not become dangerous due to the lack of water and I can honestly say, but if not for a few days of moderate rain during the middle of the season, that fixtures may well have been halted. The small and infrequent showers, gave us enough water to finish the season.

The Grounds Committee lead by Bronwyn have been investigating ways to get water onto our park within the restrictions. Mary has had numerous meetings with the BCC through the assistance of our Patron Maureen Hayes. We are hopeful that underground “pop up” sprinklers will be installed on our fields before the start of the 2007 season. Thank you to Bronwyn, Mary and John for all their hard work with their committees in 2006, a full report of the Property and Facilities Committees can be read later in this Annual Report.

The Juniors started one person short on Management and needing volunteers for a number of committee positions. It is indeed disappointing to have such large Junior numbers, but not have enough volunteers to share the workload. But the six ladies worked tirelessly to ensure all fixtures when ahead, many players had the opportunity to play representative hockey and opportunities were given to many people to assist with our children’s sporting pursuits. Sport has a major role to play in modern society, with obesity and other issues praying on our children. We struggled with getting enough coaches and managers to attend State Championships which is a great shame, as the opportunities for our players can only be given if enough volunteers are available to fill these positions. Sideline behaviour was also an issue and Junior Management is looking at new ways to combat this unacceptable behaviour in the future. We look to all members to work with us to address this issue.

A new Web Page has been created for BWHA and from all reports this has been well received. This page is linked to the Sporting Pulse Database which allows our fixtures and points table to be checked by all members. The number of “hits” this site is receiving is testament to the need to further utilise the potential of the database. Some clubs have embraced this totally and are enjoying the full benefits it offers, some have been much slower to embrace this new technology. Clubs need to have a new position at their club “Database Officer”, this is not a job that should be added to the Club Secretaries role. This would spread the load and ensure all member details are inputted and all results recorded. We can no longer expect a BWHA volunteer to bare all the responsibility of Match Statistics – the job is too large. Meg Brodie will be looking at the updating of the Web Page in 2007 to be part of her Communications Portfolio and we look forward to that.

BWHA has for many years been able to source Hon Auditors to independently check our financial position. The finding of a Hon Auditor has become more difficult and being an unpaid position it is impossible to

7 BWHA 2006 Annual Report demand a timeline for completion. Management has determined that BWHA is now at a stage were we need to employ an independent auditor to allow a timely audit and reporting process. This has been done in 2006.

BWHA continues to grow and time becomes more precious. I cannot thank enough the people who continue to give so much time to our Association on a volunteer basis. Our members are our backbone, but our volunteers are our muscles that make it move. Thank you to all.

Kathy Duggan.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Once again we ask where has the year gone. Every year it seems to go quicker or does it just seem that way when we are having so much fun.

Outstanding Debtors this year was $122.00 and that money has now been collected. Many thanks to all Club Treasurers (Junior and Senior) for all your hard work and co-operation in enabling us to achieve this result.

The registration fees to Hockey Queensland will increase slightly this year and Insurance charges will probably remain the same.

Last year I predicted that the Queensland Women’s Amateur Sports Council would cease to exist by December 2004. Well 2005 came to an end and still no results. The Brisbane City Council are still predicting the end of this saga is now within site of being settled in the next 3 – 4 months. Here’s hoping. The problem is, part of Downey Park is Crown land and part Brisbane City Council land and it has been difficult to get everyone to do their part in transferring the leases to B.W.H.A, Brisbane Softball and Downey Park Netball.

Many thanks to all clubs (Juniors and Seniors) for their co-operation and courtesy all season.

Our sponsors Just Hockey, Streets, Schweppes and 4 n Twenty once again were marvellous and we thank them sincerely for their ongoing support.

Thanks to Gail Reynolds, our past Auditor, a welcome to Don Munro our new Auditor and hope Don will be with us for some time.

To Nerieada and her helpers. Each year the compliments keep coming – well done. To Caroline, Denise and Angela. Thank you for the tremendous effort in running the bar and working at the various functions we had in the clubhouse. Much appreciated. Thank you to Councillor Maureen Hayes, our Patron, for her continued support of BWHA and invaluable assistance and advice whenever it has been necessary to discuss the many problems that arise throughout the year.

And of course I usually leave to last to thank Kathy because without her support this job would be impossible. This year Kathy has had to work under very trying circumstances to enable us to finalise 2006 which was made more difficult with the arrival of our new Auditor (even though Mr Munro was very helpful) and I know I speak for everyone associated with BWHA when I say Thank you Kath – You are Tremendous. 2007 will be a better year for you –Trust me.

This year we had a much better financial result than expected but that was because we had a lot of assistance from the Brisbane City Council in field maintenance (particularly at Rasey Park) and wages were not spent as predicted because we were without an R.D.O. most of the year. Also each area of Management stayed within the Budget, which was very satisfying, and I would like to congratulate everyone concerned.

Thank you to the Brisbane Management for your encouragement and support, as usual, and especially to Lisa Jones and Karen Hickling, our Junior Treasurer.

I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year – See you in 2007!

Mary Cockings

8 BWHA 2006 Annual Report VALE Mrs SADIE FOWLER (nee Somervile) 20/03/1903 to 09/02/2006 BWHA Honorary Treasurer - 1934 - 1935 BWHA President - 1928 - 1949

“Words by Life Member – Eileen Grealy”

Sadie Fowler (nee Somerville) played a key role in the formation of the Brisbane Woman's Hockey Association as a member of the Constitution Committee. In the office as Honorary Treasurer, 1934 and 1935, she worked with her President, Mrs Anne Todd, Secretary Miss Vera Nairn and Miss Dorothy Drouyn (later Hansford) in drafting the document which was to guide future discussions for years to come. The experience so gained, also as an A Grade player and State representative, stood by her in times of crisis as she was called upon to resolve difficulties all too common in the period when BWHA was emerging from the strictures of wartime sport, and taking its place in the rebuilding process, especially in state and national competition.

Sadie played with Taxation and Neptune clubs. She was also a QWHA delegate for Stanthorpe, and may be rightfully regarded as hockey's quiet achiever. Calm of manner, always courteous and sympathetic listener when required - these qualities alone stamped her as one of our outstanding Presidents. Her later involvement with the Aspley Lawn Bowls Club forged a link which, holds to this day in the company of former hockey associates at the annual hockey/bowls reunions. Sadie has the added satisfaction of knowing her grandchildren have taken up the sport to which she gave so much, so willingly and so graciously.

Thank you Sadie Fowler

COMPETITIONS PORTFOLIO REPORTS

COMPETITIONS – FIXTURE & GRADING PORTFOLIO

TURF

2006 promised to be a great year with the advent of the Redcliffe Turf being up and running mid way through the season. BWHA decided with the extra turf to add another division to play on the artificial surface. Alas Redcliffe suffered a few hiccups and was not ready but will now be up and running at the 2007 season.

With five divisions on the turf, it was decided that each division only have eight teams which meant a reshuffle of the lower teams in the four divisions from 2005. Management made a decision that any club that already had four teams in the turf competition could not affiliate a fifth team for the 2006 season.

Grading games were played in February and amongst the games to be played eight new teams applied for the four positions in division 5 and the four successful ones were from clubs that did not previously have a team on the turf. Hence a new era began.

Turf fixtures commenced on Friday 10 March with fields at the State Hockey Centre and Burringbar Park being used before the juniors commenced their fixtures in April. Eight timeslots were required for Division 1 and 2 on Saturdays with twelve on Sundays needed for Division 3, 4 and 5 games.

DOWNEY PARK – GRASS

With an extra division on turf it was expected that the grass numbers would be down but this year 56 teams affiliated for the grass divisions. This was made up of 4 divisions of 10, 1 division of 9 and 1 division of 7. Grass fixtures commenced on Saturday 1 April and as there was very little rain during the season continued through until 9 September without interruption. All divisions were very competitive with only 1 team not registering a win.

MONDAY MASTERS

Sixteen teams affiliated for the competition and it was split into two pools – A with 7 teams and a bye and B with 9 teams and a bye. This was the only way to fit the fixtures into the fields available on Monday nights. All teams recorded wins and both divisions were hotly contested.

9 BWHA 2006 Annual Report PRESIDENT’S CUP

Presidents Cup was not held this year due to the large number of Inter-City, National and International held during the season. The teams leading at the end of Round 1 were named the Presidents Cup winners and the player from the two top teams who would have played in the Presidents Cup game and was leading in the points became a member of the Presidents Thirteen.

With 112 teams in our competition this year, only 5 teams were awarded the trio of Presidents Cup, Minor Premiers and Premiers in their division. Three divisions had different winners for each of the above awards. Only one team was undefeated in the round games.

Thank you to all the ladies who were on the BWHA Fixture & Grading Committees for a job well done. Hope to see you back next year.

Jenny Heron

COMPETITION: OPERATIONS

Technical Officials A big thank you is required (again) to Mary Cockings and Lyn Thomas. These two ladies take on an immense workload to ensure that BWHA continues to run professional and successful fixtures (at a number of venues) and they also assist clubs by training / assisting the club volunteers who do technical duties

Cheryl Kann, Jenny Tidey, Nadine Hughes, Jenny Heron, Ronda Nix and Lesley Bennett were again regular tech bench officials at our various venues and also deserve thanks for their efforts.

Technical Representatives • Jenny Heron (BWHA Management / Ascot): • Qld U13 Championships at Hervey Bay - Tournament Director • Mary Cockings (BWHA Management): • Australian U21s - Tournament Director; • Veterans Championships at Toowoomba -Technical Officer; • Qld U18 Championships at the Gold Coast - Technical Officer; and • Qld Opens Championship at Maryborough - Technical Officer • Ronda Nix (BWHA Life Member) • Qld Opens Championship at Maryborough - Technical Officer • Qld U18 Championships at the Gold Coast - Technical Officer; and • Australia U21s - Technical Judge • Lesley Bennett (Pine Hills) • U18 Championships at the Gold Coast - Technical Judge

Umpires - Development BWHA again worked hard to send quality umpires that were at the right level of their development to State Championships. All of these umpires developed their skills further, whether or not they were awarded a higher badge. Details of badges awarded are included at the end of this report.

We also continued with both the Umpires Rules Paper and Rule of the Week (grass / Div 5) and believe that it provides a good forum for discussion / learning within Clubs.

Lauren Richards was awarded the Vicky Spice Award at the U18s Championships.

Umpire Representatives Debbie Rollason (U21s), Bernie Pangrazio (Vets) and Mel Craig (U15s) all umpired at National Championships in 2006, which is a very good result for BWHA. Debbie was also awarded her Australian badge.

• Lyn Hill (HQ / Ascot) • Premier League at Brisbane - Umpire Coach; • Australian U21s at Brisbane- Joint Umpire Manager; and • State U18 Championships at the Gold Coast - Umpire Manager • Sonya Fisher (BWHA Management / Norths) • State U15 Championships in Townsville - Umpire Coach. 10 BWHA 2006 Annual Report

Umpires - Fixtures Cheryl Kann and Meg Brodie, the Association’s Umpires Stewards for Turf and Grass respectively again took on a largely thankless task in 2006. The lack of club umpires put forward for testing and the Association’s inability to stretch a limited number of mentors over a lot of timeslots / venues meant that not all umpires could be mentored during the year.

Thanks go to Cheryl Kann, Gaye Henderson, Heather Scraggs, Lyn Hill, Jan Hadfield and Kathy Duggan for their efforts during the year. A large number of badges were awarded on grass, turf and masters fixtures and without the aforementioned people it wouldn’t have happened.

Conclusion Thanks to everyone who provided assistance this year. All of the above takes time and effort and without a hard-working Umpire and Technical Committee, it wouldn’t happen!!

Sonya Fisher

COMPETITIONS: RECORDING & REPORTING (MATCH SECRETARY REPORT)

The 2006 year has again featured, in many divisions, intense contests to gain places in the semifinals with the large number of drawn fixtures indicating the evenness of the competition. Again, the deliberations and decisions of both turf and grass grading committees have proven to be on the money while the task of the fixture committees become more difficult every year. Congratulations to the members of these committees for their diligence and expertise.

In 2006, five teams were successful in winning all of the major awards: presidents cup, minor premiers and premiers. These teams were St Andrews 1, Ascot 3, South Brisbane Eagles 1, Valley 5 and Redcliffe division 1 masters. Ascot 3 had an outstanding season winning all twenty-one fixture games, the major semifinal and the grand final. In three divisions, there were three different winners for each of the trophies: Division 2, Downey Park division 2 and Downey Park division 3.

Thank you to all club officials, June Snarski, Mary Cockings and all volunteers who assisted in controlling fixtures at both turf venues. Without your dedicated efforts, my portfolio would have been extremely difficult to maintain.

Lyn Thomas

DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO REPORT

REGIONAL DIRECTOR of COACHING (RCD)

It has been a challenging year, with the loss of our Development Officer Margaret Dilger in March to the Townsville Coaching Director position. We wish Margaret every success in her position and will miss her knowledge and the depth of experience that she contributed to the development department over the past 4 years. The Development Officer position remains vacant and hopefully will be filled in 2007 to cater for the increasing needs of our members.

A major role in BWHA is maintaining a high level of communication with our large member base. With the increased use of electronic mail and our redeveloped webpage, this task was made easier this year. The full potential of our webpage as both an education tool and notice board has yet to be fully utilized and we have only “scratched the surface” with its many uses to date.

Our teams have achieved many creditable results in 2006. Our U11 teams once again won all divisions at the annual Southern Cross tournament. The change of format for the State Championships from U13 through to U18 meant that many new challenges faced our teams this year. All 3 Brisbane teams from U13, U15 and U18 all found they were seeded in Division One. This is truly a real credit to them and a reflection of our depth, strength and the standard of our under -age players. We were successful in taking out the U15 Division One Final after a very exciting if not nail biting, sudden death drop-off, (6 v 6) win. We also won the U18 Division One competition in a convincing manner. Our Premier League Division One team won the honour of being State Champions once again after missing out in 2005.

Behind every team there is a large number of support personnel that contribute to the team’s participation, success and experiences. I would like to express my sincere gratitude and congratulations to all of our coaches, selectors, managers, sports trainers, physiotherapists and parents of our representative teams from U11 to 11 BWHA 2006 Annual Report Premier League for a job well done. Your valuable contributions to our programs, trials and state championships does not go unnoticed. It simply just wouldn’t happen without your continued support and assistance.

In addition to our teams’ successes, many individual players have achieved higher representative honors. Congratulations to all on your selections in Australian Team/Squads, Queensland Team/Squads, and Queensland Best 16/Talent Id Squads in 2006. The number and names of these players appear in the records section of the annual report. It takes a huge amount of dedication and sacrifice at times to achieve such honors, and I know that many of these players have done exactly that and thoroughly deserve this recognition.

BWHA continues to organize, conduct and facilitate many additional player and coach development opportunities to assist its members. A summary of these opportunities are as follows:

• Southbank Institute program continued with David McNeill as head coach. 10 players aged between 17 – 21 years of age were selected and invited to be part of the program. The program is partially sponsored by Southbank, financially supported by BWHA and conducted by Hockey Queensland for metropolitan based players. The program provides services to the players who have been talent identified, but have not yet secured a position within the QAS squad. Its other aim is to create an opportunity where the players can improve and excel in an elite squad environment. • BWHA were invited in March to participate in a 2 day tournament conducted at Maryborough to coincide with the opening of their new wet surface. The “Maryborough Challenge” as it was called attracted teams from Ipswich, Toowoomba, Bundaberg and Maryborough. Big congratulations to the Brisbane team on winning the inaugural event. It was a great achievement considering the teams average age was 17years and consisted mostly of our development squad members. We look forward to the opportunity to defend our trophy in 2007. • A City Vs Qld Country match was organized in July and played at the SHC as preparation for the Qld Country team. Unfortunately, we went down on the night but many thanks for the players for their efforts and I’m sure the Queensland Country team was grateful for the match practice. • BWHA Squad. As part of our ongoing commitment to player development, approximately 20 players participated in skill development sessions over the last 12 months. The aims of the sessions are to provide preparation for various tournaments and a platform in which they can reach their full potential. Players selected and invited to attend have been talent identified by selection in State under age teams and squads past and present. • We were fortunate enough to have David Bell (former Hockeyroos coach) and Des King (National Junior Assistant coach) provide sessions for our coaches and players whilst they were in town for the National U21 Championships. • Club development programs x 3. • Schools . With the introduction of an exciting new game called “ROOKEY” for new players to the game has provided us with something both fun and appealing to school hockey programs. BWHA has delivered various hockey programs to approximately 27 schools in 2007. • A BWHA team also competed in the very competitive International Schools Southern Skies Tournament held in July resulting in a very creditable runners-up prize. • We have continued our involvement with the Brisbane Indoor Hockey competition and have submitted 2 development teams in the divisions two and three. We have also achieved great results with many Brisbane players selected for State teams. • The Medibank HQld Coaching Clinics were conducted once again and attended by Talent Id players from U15 and U13 State Championships. • 20 coaches successfully completed the Level One Coaching Course. • A very successful Minkey and Modified skills day was conducted in July, and our guest coaches the BWHA U18 State representatives and development squad players did an excellent job. Many thanks to those who sent positive feedback and thanks of the day. • The U11 program continues to be a big success and attracted a record number of players for both programs.

Summary

As I have continued to say over the past 9 years, we owe much of our success to the tireless efforts and enthusiasm of our very skilled number of volunteers who continually put their hands up, fulfilling and carrying out many thankless tasks every year.

12 BWHA 2006 Annual Report Many thanks to both Junior and Senior Management for their continued support and invaluable guidance provided thorough the year. I would like to particularly thank Junior Management personnel Desley Mackay and Karen Hickling who stepped in on numerous occasions to fill the many jobs done previously by Margaret.

Whilst on that note, special mention must go to Sue Barsby for the many extra hours and duties she fulfilled in 2006. Without the enormous assistance given by Sue, Aimee and Kathy in the office, the many tasks undertaken every year would seem quite daunting at times. I thank them for their patience, friendship, understanding and sense of humour which makes the work place just that much more enjoyable.

I wish you all a happy and safe holiday, and I look forward to working with you all again either next year or in the future.

UNIFORMS & EQUIPMENT, & TOURS REPORT

A fairly productive year with 4 teams winning their respective Divisions – Premier League (1), U18 (1), U15 (1) & Vets (3). All other teams played well and either finished in the top 4 of their pool or just outside. Overall, all players should be happy with their results. Congratulations to all players who were picked for Qld in squads, teams or talent identification programs.

With tours comes apparel – I thank Rhonda Bentley for all her efforts and the time she puts in on a Saturday morning to fit all our players. Also, I would like to thank Jenny Tidey, Rhonda’s assistant – both ladies worked hard fitting over 300 players as well as selling our apparel on hand. Again sales were good, making our normal small profit which will be put towards new playing tops next year.

Cheers - have a great break and catch up with you all again next season.

TURF UMPIRES’ STEWARD REPORT

Cheryl Kann is enjoying a well earned adventure overseas to watch the Hockeyroos, at the time of this report going to print. On her behalf I thank Jan Hadfield and Lyn Thomas for their assistance with allocations throughout the year. A big thank you to all umpires who officiated on the turf for your dedication and enthusiasm, especially the Division 1 umpires. A special thank you to all Umpires Mentors who allowed a number of our umpires to be upgraded on BWHA Fixtures in 2006.

Cheryl’s job is possibly the most thankless in the association, hopefully allocations will be a little easier next year with a minimum of 4 games at each venue each week, allowing umpires to umpire at the same venue and in a close timeframe to when they play, remember that Redcliffe Turf will be online in 2007 and so extra (or reduced) travel time may be needed for players/umpires in our association. I thank Cheryl for her time and efforts again in 2006.

Clubs please be reminded that you must supply an umpire each week equal to the divisions you compete in, the more umpires a club has, the less frequently they have to umpire. So we need all clubs to give umpiring a higher priority, similar to player and coach development to ensure we have enough umpires to meet the needs of our fixtures.

Kathy Duggan for Cheryl Kann

GRASS UMPIRES’ STEWARD REPORT

Congratulations to the umpires at Downey Park who were awarded badges in 2006.To them and to all the other players who umpired each week my thanks for doing the job, as without umpires there is no game. It is hard and sometimes thankless work.

It has been heartening to see some clubs accept their responsibility to increase their pool of umpires and to actively assist them. Many clubs are training umpires on junior divisions and the lower grades. Hopefully this will increase the pool of senior umpires.

13 BWHA 2006 Annual Report Some umpires have no interest in improving their standard when they reach the higher DP levels. This is disappointing and will ultimately reduce the number of turf umpires and increase the “burn out” problem. This is already occurring in some clubs with few high DP umpires. Contract umpires are not the answer.

Clubs need to recognise that BWHA require an umpire for every team every week and players do not want to umpire every week. When clubs register teams thought must be given to umpiring requirements.

My thanks to Lyn Thomas who has an enormous knowledge and is so willing to help, without her assistance the season would have been chaotic. Cheryl Kann, Gaye Henderson, Lesley Bennett and Sonya Fisher made a difference by assessing umpires and giving feedback.

Also many thanks to umpires who were willing to do whatever was asked, when it was asked. The people who gave me feedback during the season helped me to improve my allocation processes, and I thank them.

My continuing thanks to the club umpire convenors who patiently survived my errors and the many changes I made when the errors were found. Thank you, one and all.

PROPERTY & FACILITIES PORTFOLIO REPORT

Forget the “War on Terror” & “Global Warming”, the two hot topics at Downey Park this year have been parking & water, specifically the inconvenient lack of both.

Whilst I do not imagine the parking situation will ever improve dramatically due to the location & heavy usage of the park area, hopefully the changes to the Northey St Farm & the promised council sign posting/road marking will ease some of the congestion & assist in keeping the access roads clear in case emergency vehicles require entrance to the park.

The water situation is obviously far graver, as continued degradation of the playing surface presents a real risk to player safety. Fortunately this year we had a few showers of rain, which allowed us to continue fixtures, but it is obvious that we can’t continue to rely solely on nature. Our existing watering system is unusable under the current water restrictions & much time has been spent this season researching our available irrigation options. The Brisbane Council has now given us an undertaking that they will be installing in-ground sprinkler systems on Downey Park over the off-season & that these sprinkler systems will be allowed to be used as per set parameters even when we progress to Level Four restrictions. BWHA are also investigating the installation of rainwater tanks to be attached to the clubhouses at Downey & Rasey Park.

Other works around the park include areas for off-season goal box storage, increased signage, internal painting at Rasey Park & the minor Downey Park buildings & the acquisition of extra shed space with a new roller door adjacent Field 10. This last was required to house our new ride-on mower, purchased courtesy of a community grant.

I also intend to take this opportunity to thank all those who contributed to the P&F portfolio this year. Firstly, my hard-working committee members; John Bigg, Bev Broadfoot, Petra Faas, Joyce Proctor, Caroline Schomberg, Robyn Sneddon, Jenny Tidey & especially Mary Cockings. Also thanks to Nerieada Gill for her excellent work for another season as our canteen convenor (you may have noticed the difference in standard between our Downey Park canteen & other sporting facilities canteens over the past season & much of that is attributed to Nerieada) & also to all the young people who do such a great job working in the canteens at both Downey & Rasey Park. Thanks also to Denise Byrne for her work in the bar every Saturday & to Angela “Bud” Coleman, Caroline Schomberg & Wendy Proctor for being available to help out with the bar, often at very short notice.

Finally, thanks to all those who helped out when asked; who assisted with Saturday set-up & pull-down, who parked legally, brought in corner posts or stacked chairs & tables in the bar. I am shocked that no-one else has appeared to have nominated for the P&F job on BWHA Management for next year, obviously I am not making it look glamorous enough (you get a car park behind the clubhouse on a Saturday), so it looks like I may be back for another twelve months. See you all at the Downey Park working bee in late March!!!

14 BWHA 2006 Annual Report EVENTS AND PROMOTIONS REPORT

As 2006 was my first season working with Hockey, the Annual Downey Park & Presidents Medal Dinners were a real eye-opener to some of the characters in Brisbane Women’s Hockey.

The Downey Park Dinner was held on Saturday 12 August 2006, with most ladies heading straight upstairs to the clubhouse after their last games of the season. The night was a fairly low-key event with players enjoying the chance to relax after all the hard work during 2006. Judy Keen provided the entertainment for the night as MC, keeping everyone amused with her jokes and stories. The fantastic caterers at All About Catering once again supplied the buffet dinner and dessert was a selection of cakes from the Cheesecake Shop. Thanks to Just Hockey for supplying the prize for the night’s raffle.

The Presidents Medal Dinner was held on Friday 1 st September 2006 at the Downey Park Clubhouse. The night started off with pre-dinner drinks and nibbles held outside in the paved area below the clubhouse. Many thanks to Nerieada Gill and her helpers for preparing and hosting this part of the evening. People were then moved upstairs to get the awards of the night underway. The dinner was again a buffet style meal, supplied by All About Catering followed by a range of desserts from the Cheesecake Shop. Once again, Kathy Duggan did a fantastic job as MC for the evening and made sure the night kept rolling smoothly. Jane Bennett was awarded the 2006 Division 1 Best & Fairest Player however, she was unable to attend the dinner so an Ascot representative collected this award on her behalf.

Big thank-you’s go out to Kathy Duggan, Sue Barsby, Mary Cockings, Lisa-Maree Jones and Joyce Proctor for their help and support in making both the dinners such a success. Also special thanks to the wonderful ladies who worked behind the bar for both events who seemed to provide a vital element of both nights.

I look forward to working in the Events section again in season 2007!

40 ______JUNIOR CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

This year I would like to say a big thankyou to everyone who was involved with the Juniors this year.

On Saturdays the day starts early for Jnr Management and with the help from Bronwyn Morris, Brian Kingsford and Resh Zalucki the jobs are made a lot easier for us to get things organised before the games started..

Also involved on Saturday mornings: Shannan Kuun – Minkey Modified Coordinator – who always does a wonderful job. John Thomas and Chris Kingston- Lee our sports trainers who were always there to mend the bumps and bruises Melissa Hickling – Time Steward – does a wonderful job to keep our games on time and running smoothly. Nerieada and her staff in the canteen, who always look after us.

We also had Kathryn Foster, Jenny Heron and Katrusha Zalucki working for us in the Tech Benches, Sports trainers and Umpires Mentors at the J1 & J2 competition on Friday nights.

The games can’t go ahead without the Fixture and Grading Committee (Pam Nitarski, Bev Ragonesi, Sue Barsby and Diana Young), which is always a very difficult job for them at the beginning of the year. But with their expertise, a great season is always had by all junior players.

Thankyou to everyone for your support throughout the year.

Our Development Department always has a huge job in the organisation of the development for Under 11, 13, 15. Thank you to Sharyn Simpson our RDC and Sue Barsby for all the time and knowledge you put into the juniors every year and also the team of Selectors, Coaches and Managers. Also thank you to Rhonda Bentley and Jenny Tidey for all their hard work outfitting our Junior Representative Players.

In the absence of a designated Match Secretary this year, Jnr Management pulled together and got the job done. The Database also lessened our workload, thank you to Libby Roberts who worked on this throughout the year.

With the help from Kathy, Aimee and the Senior Management the Junior Management team showed their talents and skills to ensure the smooth running of the Juniors. I would like to thank Rhonda Manthey, Karen Hickling, Margie Brown, Chris O’Sullivan and Debbie Wark for taking on far more than should be expected of any volunteer.

Enjoy your break and hope to see you all in 2007.

Desley Mackay.

JUNIOR SECRETARY’S REPORT

Where did the season go! It only seems like yesterday that we were snowed under with registrations, trials and gradings.

It was encouraging to see registrations up dramatically from the previous year, especially Minkey and Modified registrations being exceptionally high it shows a bright future for women’s hockey. Beginning of season is a very hectic time of year and as always registrations have to be dealt with before fixtures commence. I would like to thank the club secretaries for being so diligent and helpful and look forward to an even bigger, brighter season in 2007.

We were without a match secretary at the start of the season. Desley took on this role on top of her already strenuous workload but as always we got through the season and had a great time doing so. On top of our roles within Jnr Management a number of us also went away on Tours as either Coaches/Managers, in doing so we have a great time and make some wonderful friendships. It would be good to see more parents/members of the hockey community become involved with Brisbane Jnr Girls in one way or another.

A big thank you has to go to Kathy and Aimee for your never-ending assistance throughout the season.

41 ______Congratulations and thanks to all the players, coaches, managers, umpires and volunteers for a very successful season. To my fellow members on Jnr Management it has been my pleasure to spend countless Tuesday nights, Friday nights and Saturday mornings with a great group of ladies and I thank you all for your help and support throughout the season.

Have a safe and happy off season and I look forward to seeing you all again next year.

Rhonda Manthey.

JUNIOR TREASURER’S REPORT

Another season has finished and before long we will be planning the next.

The season had a rocky start with Kathy having to cope on her own whilst trying to find a replacement for Stacey. As we know this would have been disastrous for most offices but Kathy still managed to get the job done. Aimee was appointed to the position and for someone who knew little about hockey she has done very well in her new role. Thanks to Kathy and Aimee for their support throughout the season.

We once again tried to make life a little easier for the clubs by changing the process for making the first payment for the season. This seemed to be successful and not only helped clubs but also reduced the workload for BWHA administration. We did experience some bugs early on and I appreciate the patience of the clubs while we tried to ensure everything was right.

The position of Match Secretary did not receive any nominations this season. If it had not been for the data base and the willingness of our Chairperson it would have been a very arduous season. So thanks to Desley for taking on the position of Chairperson and Match Secretary. This is an important position and really needs to be filled. As a result of this very little fines were issued this year and some clubs could consider themselves lucky. All in all though the clubs have been very good in trying to comply with the association’s rules.

As always Mary has kept the finances of our association on track and I thank her for all her hard work. To the junior management team – Desley, Rhonda, Margie, Chris and Debbie thanks again, it’s the people that make any job a burden or an enjoyable experience.

To all staff, office bearers and volunteers in BWHA have a well deserved break and a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Karen Hickling.

JUNIOR COMPETITIONS REPORT

Initially I would like to thank the Junior Committee for such a successful season and congratulate them on the professional way they manage the Clubs.

With 20 clubs entering teams in the Junior Competition it was inevitable how tough the grading was going to be for 2006. I would like to thank the grading committee including Pam Nitarski, Di Young, Sue Barsby and Bev Ragonesi for their many hours of commitment to getting the teams graded fairly to ensure a competitive season for all.

Turf

We had the hard task of trialing the junior clubs for a much sought after spot in the J Turf Divisions. After many hours spent around a table and a grading weekend of round robin games unfortunately a couple of teams were unsuccessful in their bid for Turf. We however gave them feedback for the season and off-season so they can come back again next year and try again.

Initially it was to be a 6 team comp but due to the strength of the teams nominating we ended up with J1 – 8 team and J2 – 10 team competition with the J2’s being split after the first round. This was a trial year for this type of competition and appeared to make the competition much stronger after the split was made. Congratulations to those teams that made finals and were Premiers for 2006.

42 ______Grass

This year 78 teams nominated for Grass Divisions and most of the clubs had done a good job nominating their team in a suitable Division which helps with the grading process -thank you to the Club personnel for this. However in a few grades we still needed grading games in the first round to ensure teams were allocated correctly.

We are very fortunate to have the depth from an A to D Division in all age groups to ensure all players have the opportunity to learn and develop in the game as the year progresses. The competition was very close in all the junior grades and for many it wasn’t until the last game that the final 4 spots were decided.

Congratulations to all teams on a successful season and look forward to 2007.

Debbie Wark

MINKEY & MODIFIED CO-ORDINATORS REPORT

Mouthguards in, shoelaces tied, and hundreds of ponytails blowing in the wind - the Minkey and Modified teams were set for a great season. Despite it being pretty frosty on the first few Saturday mornings, the girls were not fazed and leapt in with sticks swinging and aiming for the nets. Although the score ultimately decides which team wins in the end, the emphasis is on the girls having fun whilst learning the hockey basics and how to play in a team. Playing in Minkeys and Modies, plants a passion and love for hockey in the players that encourages them to enjoy working in a team environment and being active.

Thanks you to all the coaches, parents, and trusty supporters for helping set up and pack away the equipment every Saturday, the season would not have run nearly as smoothly without you, and both the players and staff appreciate your efforts.

Good Luck to all the budding Hockeyroos - until next season! Shannan Kuun

JUNIOR UMPIRES REPORT

Once again this season all Clubs started off umpiring their own clubs, as proved in the past it does help those young umpires gain a little courage to continue on and be tested for their junior badge.

Not as many clubs nominated their umpires for badges, only 24 applicants from all of the BWHA Clubs. 11 of those umpires did obtain their junior badge.

There were limited volunteers able to come out on a Saturday morning to help with the testing and this did cause a few headaches throughout the season. For the few helpers being, Gaye Henderson, Lauren Harten, Lesley Bennett and Robyn Sutherland, your time was much appreciated. A huge thank-you!!

Thank you to Kathy Duggan for organizing the Junior Turf Umpires Mentors – this again allowed our umpires for the Junior Turf games to get feedback each week and testing where required. Thank you to the Mentors – Annette Asplin, Lyn Hill, Lauren Richards, Bernadette Pangrazio, Melanie Craig, Lesley Bennett, Lucy Cupitt, Caroline Schomberg, Hayley Crook and Rowena McKinnon for your time and expertise.

I do believe that BWHA need to bring in some type of policy that those who play in our rep teams (not U11) should also be tested for their umpire badges; it would also improve their knowledge of the rules at the same time. All Clubs should have an umpire development plan in place and this should be monitored by BWHA. Our older umpires will not be here forever. I don’t know what the solution is or will be in the future if something is not done now!

Thanks to the office staff at BWHA for their continued assistance throughout 2006 and also our Junior Management team as we did accomplish a lot this year.

Hopefully Clubs will do their development over the coming years and Hockey will be the winner in the end.

Margie Brown.

BALL PERSON STEWARD REPORT

Ball Girls were supplied for various games again this season with each of the girls really enjoying participating in and being so close to high class hockey. Although some of the girls were still learning and a few mistakes were made, all of the attendants developed throughout the season. The number of ball attendants has grown over the last few years and will continue to grow into the future. If you or your club are interested in being or supplying ball attendants for top level games contact the Brisbane Women’s Hockey Assoc.

Brian Kingsford.
