and some considerable encouragement I decided to stand for the position of President of BWHA late last year. Lisa-Maree Jones, the incumbent President, could not guarantee her availability at the necessary level to hold the President’s position in 2006. Lisa has remained on management in the position of Vice-President to assist and pass on the valuable information that she has acquired in her two years as President, which has been much appreciated by me. When making my decision I needed to take into careful consideration the roles I already hold with Hockey Queensland as well as my work and home life. I have long been a playing member of BWHA and have held other volunteer positions in the past. Taking on the role of President was a major step not to be taken lightly. Having taken on the role, my first year has involved watching and listening to understand the workings of BWHA. It is evident from the steady growth and development over the years that BWHA has been governed in a professional manner and I needed to understand the workings before being able to offer constructive ways to enhance the association. Much of the planning was already completed for 2006 when I took over the President’s role. This has allowed me the opportunity to watch this large and vibrant association cater for its members. I have asked many questions, offered suggestions for improvement and met many wonderful volunteers in the process. 2006 has by no means been an easy year. Two BWHA staff members left at the beginning of the year (just prior to the commencement of fixtures). We are caught in the midst of a severe drought affecting the quality of the fields at Downey Park, despite the efforts of our Grounds Committee. Using the majority of the 12.30pm game timeslots at Downey Park for junior games also left some seniors disgruntled. A fifth division was added to the turf, although the anticipated Redcliffe turf was not online during the season. The condition of the playing surface of field 2 at the State Hockey Centre was a constant source of complaint, but the alternative of changing turf games to grass was not supported by the membership. We held two members’ forums towards the end of the season, to discuss issues identified at Council that affected the association and our members. We are now working during the off-season to ensure our governance is more clearly documented and communicated. The first area to be addressed is the criterion for positions, expanding on the roles listed in the By-Laws and giving members, nominees and appointers better guidelines to ensure the best possible people fill every role required by BWHA. We are also building on the past work of Lisa and Mary Cockings in continuing to update our financial procedures in line with legal requirements and fully developing our financial planning for the future. It must be said that I now have a greater appreciation for the whole picture, the worth of our unsung heroes, the volunteers at all levels.

  • Celebratingcelebrating
CelebratingCelebrating 11/11/1995 - 11/11/2020 Foreword Letter from current President Steve Stewart Hockey Queensland today spans 23 Associations and includes Master’s and Indoor Hockey, but that has not always been the case. In the 1990s a group of people had a vision of unification for our sport to enhance its management and provide opportunities and pathways for its athletes. Their efforts were rewarded in 1995 with the birth of Hockey Queensland (HQ) as a unified male and female State Sporting Organisation. The concept of HQ was first seriously proposed in 1993 by Daphne Pirie and Jim Quaite, the Presidents of Queensland Women’s Hockey Association and Queensland Hockey Association respectively. Through their diligence and the efforts of others, including the Steering Committee of Dennis Binnington, John Giles, Julie McNeil, Elsie Quaite and Janne Ellis we have evolved into the HQ of today. I consider the longevity of people’s involvement in hockey as one of the most endearing features of our sports culture, as many of the people who contributed to the creation of QWHA, QHA and of course HQ, are still involved in Hockey in Queensland. I would particularly like to thank Janne Ellis for her commitment to Hockey Queensland. Janne was there at the beginning and remains with us as our ‘historian’ and jack of all trades. Janne your contribution is appreciated. Go #TeamQLD, Steve Stewart Celebrating 25 years of Hockey Queensland On the 11th November 1995, Queensland Women’s Hockey Association and Queensland Men’s Hockey Association merged to form Hockey Queensland Incorporated. On the same date in 2020, Hockey Queensland Limited celebrates the silver anniversary of the amalgamation.
