Abstract Background: Among metazoans, retention of functional diet-derived chloroplasts (kleptoplasty) is known only from the sea slug taxon Sacoglossa (Gastropoda: Opisthobranchia). Intracellular maintenance of plastids in the slug's digestive epithelium has long attracted interest given its implications for understanding the evolution of endosymbiosis. However, photosynthetic ability varies widely among sacoglossans; some species have no plastid retention while others survive for months solely on photosynthesis. We present a molecular phylogenetic hypothesis for the Sacoglossa and a survey of kleptoplasty from representatives of all major clades. We sought to quantify variation in photosynthetic ability among lineages, identify phylogenetic origins of plastid retention, and assess whether kleptoplasty was a key character in the radiation of the Sacoglossa. -

The site can be accessed by a narrow county road from the N59, but a second roadway is also available to the north and west (Letter) which primarily serves large coniferous plantations, bogland and some farmland. While there are very few houses in the vicinity of the application site there are numerous houses located close to N59 junctions from both roads to which access to the site is achievable. -

Over 10,500 names are treated including 6,793 valid species and subspecies (with 1,907 primary synonyms), 1,271 genera and subgenera (with 393 primary synonyms), 93 families and 38 superfamilies. Nomenclatural and taxonomic problems are reviewed in detail, and many resolved. Detailed notes and references are provided where necessary. The constitution of a large number of families and superfamilies is discussed in detail, with the positions of some taxa rearranged in an attempt to form a stable base for future taxonomic studies. This is the first time the nomenclature of any large group of decapod crustaceans has been examined in such detail. ÉTUDE SUR L'ALIMENTATION D'AEOLIDIA PAPI LLOSA L. par Jean-Claude Moreteau Station biologique de Roscoff et Laboratoire de Zoologie, Université Paris-Sud, Centre d'Orsay - 91405 Orsay Résumé Après une étude biologique d'Aeolidia papillosa en milieu naturel (herbier des environs de Roscoff), ce travail aborde l'adaptation alimentaire du Nudi- branche à ses proies (les Actiniaires). A partir de l'étude du cnidome des proies, on établit un coefficient de présence pour chaque type de cnidocyste dans chaque tissu. Une analyse qualitative et quantitative des fèces du prédateur permet de dégager certains faits. Les basitriches sont stockés dans les sacs cnidophores et sont aussi rejetés régulièrement. Tous les autres cnidocystes, à part les mastigophores microbasiques, sont rejetés très rapidement et sans subir de dégradation. Par contre, les mastigophores microbasiques sont rejetés plus tardivement et en grande partie dégradés. La quantité de chaque type de cnido- cyste dans les fèces confirme que le prédateur n'a pas la même appétence envers les différents tissus. Il existe une bonne relation entre le comportement prédateur du Nudibranche et son appétence envers les différents tissus de la proie. Introduction Les préférences alimentaires d'Aeolidia papillosa ont fait l'objet de nombreuses observations. Cela a permis de dresser la liste des proies du Nudibranche (Miller, 1961 ; Swennen, 1961 ; Waters, 1973 ; Edmunds et coll., 1974 pour ne citer que les travaux les plus récents). Corrélativement, des études ont porté sur le choix de la proie par ce Nudibranche (Stehouwer, 1952 ; Braams et Geelen, 1953 ; Waters, 1973 ; Edmunds et coll., 1974), ainsi que sur les réactions des Actiniaires vis-à-vis du prédateur (Robson, 1966 ; Waters, 1973 ; Edmunds et coll., 1976). -

Accounting for the Fund The Companies Act 1985 does not apply to all public bodies but the principles that underlie the Act’s accounting and disclosure requirements are of general application: their purpose is to give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the body concerned. The Government therefore has decided that the accounts of public bodies should be prepared in a way that conforms as closely as possible with the Act’s requirements and also complies with Accounting Standards where applicable. The accounts are prepared in accordance with accounts directions issued by the Secretary of State for Transport. The Fund’s accounts consolidate the General Lighthouse Authorities’ (GLAs) accounts and comply as appropriate with this policy. The notes to the Bishop Rock Lighthouse accounts contain further information. Section 211(5) of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995 requires the Secretary of State to lay the Fund’s accounts before Parliament. -

Summary Ectoparasites, attaching mainly to the fins or gills, are a particularly conspicuous part of the parasite fauna of marine fishes. In particular the dominant copepods, have received much interest due to their effects on host populations. However, still little is known on the copepod fauna on fishes for many localities and their temporal stability as long-term observations are largely absent. The aim of this project was two-fold: 1) to deliver a current inventory of ectoparasitic copepods in fishes in the southern Wadden Sea around Texel and 2) to compare the current parasitic copepod fauna with the one from 1968 in the same area, using data published in an internal NIOZ report and additional unpublished original notes. In total, 47 parasite species have been recorded on 52 fish species in the southern Wadden Sea to date. The two copepod species, where quantitative comparisons between 1968 and 2010 were possible for their host, the European flounder (Platichthys flesus), showed different trends: Whereas Acanthochondria cornuta seems not to have altered its infection rate or per host abundance between years, Lepeophtheirus pectoralis has shifted towards infection of smaller hosts, as well as to a stronger increase of per-host abundance with increasing host length. -
