The Liffey Swim: The 1960’s Decade – Part 1 1960 – 1962 Cyril J Smyth Dublin University Central Athletic Club, Sports Centre, Trinity College, University of Dublin, Dublin 2 Introduction The provision of life-saving and swimming facilities in the form of public baths was no better at the start of the decade than it had been in 1920 when the Liffey Swim was inaugurated. The only baths built by Dublin Corporation, the Tara Street Baths, dated from 1886. The Iveagh Baths on Bride Road, which had been built by the Iveagh Trust, were opened in 1906. J.J. “Jack” Kennedy, the first winner of the Liffey Swim, described the situation as “civic indifference to the sanctity and safety of human life that is incomprehensible”, given the annual death toll by drowning.1 The 1950’s had ended with a series of wins and top three placings by teenagers in the Liffey Swim. It was a trend that was to continue in the 1960’s. The 1960’s became the decade of precocious teenage swimming. In addition to the Independent Cup and Gold medal for the winner of the Liffey Swim, a trophy was introduced for the club team competition, which had been inaugurated in 1934 – a silver mahogany-mounted shield, presented by Independent Newspapers Ltd. The 1960 Liffey Swim The maximum handicap was set at 3½ min2,3, with twelve limit men and one scratch man, Rory O’Connor (Club Snámha Columcille, red cap), a 6ft 2 in (1.88 m) 18-year-old, the Leinster 200 m and 400 m champion and winner of the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Race the previous week.4–6 The shorter handicaps were influenced by the fact that the race start time was one hour after full tide, the heavy flow giving greater assistance to the swimmers. -

The cyclists’ view The Dublin Cycling Campaign recently asked its members and friends which parts of the Dublin street fabric they find could benefit from re-design. This report sets out the feedback received, under the following headings- 1. The Quays- including bridges and surrounding roads 2. North City centre 3. South City centre 4. North city outside canals 5. South city outside canals The ten junctions most cited in our survey are printed in red. Illustrations have been copied from Google Maps and other sources where possible. One constantly-recurring feature of the feedback is the fear and danger arising from multi-lane systems. 1 1. The Quays Grattan bridge, turning right onto Essex Quay, the bridge is one way and cars are pushing behind and you're not sure which side of the lane you should cycle: very dangerous! Talbot Memorial Bridge [1] Heading left on to city quay, you're directed off road on the corner, conflict with peds and lose priority when joining the road after the corner [2] Heading straight or heading right, the time delay on the toucan crossing can take ages even when there’s light traffic. 2 Ormond Quay junction with Jervis Street Presence & position of cycle lane encourages cars to turn left across cyclists and knock them over. Victoria Quay (just outside Guinness gate), turning right on to Frank Sherwin Bridge (to then turn left to go up to the Pheonix Park), cyclists need to go from the bus lane to the third of four lanes. -

Report to Cycling and Walking Sub-Committee (Sub –Committee of the Transportation Strategic Policy Committee) Dublin City Centre Cycle & Pedestrian Counts May 2017 Said Shawqi Executive Engineer, Environment and Transportation Department Dublin City Council December, 2017 1 Dublin City Centre Cycle Count – May 2017 As part of the 2007-2012 cycle action plan it was proposed to carry out a new city centre cycle count every May in order to measure changes in cycle usage within the city centre. These counts were to be carried out in addition to the annual canal cordon counts which are carried out in November each year. The differences between the two counts are as follows: The Canal Cordon Count measures all vehicles & pedestrians crossing the canal cordon between 7 am and 7pm averaged over two days in November. Each pedestrian /car / bicycle / bus / van is normally counted only once. The Quays Count: Dublin City Centre Cycle & Pedestrian Counts takes the data from the Quays Counts as follows; The City Centre Cycle Count is the total number of cyclists travelling in any direction on either side of the bridges over the Liffey and other selected junctions in the city centre on one day in May from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The City Centre Pedestrian Count is the total number of pedestrians crossing on either side of the bridges over the Liffey and other selected junctions in the city centre on one day in May from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. As part of the cycle action plan it was proposed to continue to conduct these annual city centre cycle counts. -

These counts were to be carried out in addition to the annual canal cordon counts which are carried out in November each year. Twenty-six locations were originally selected between Heuston Station and the East Link Bridge and Parnell Street and St. Stephen’s Green. As new bridges were built these were included in the annual counts in recent years. The Samuel Beckett Bridge (27-28) was added in 2011 and the Rosie Hackett Bridge (61-62) in 2015. Numbers in brackets refer to the locations as shown on the attached location map. -

We are also adjacent to the Samuel Beckett Bridge, giving access to Dublin’s Grand Canal area, we are connected to the City Centre and the 3 Arena via the Luas Red line and a 20 minute walk from St Stephen’s Green. From Dublin Airport via Port Tunnel: Distance = 13kms, Approx. Time = 17 mins At Dublin Airport roundabout take the 2nd exit onto M1. At the next roundabout take the 2nd exit for M1 motorway. Continue onto M50 motorway, sign posted City Centre, Dublin Port – Toll. Continue through Port Tunnel and exit onto East Wall Road. When you come to a roundabout at the 3 Arena, take the 2nd exit with the River Liffey on your left onto North Wall Quay. Drop off at A&L Goodbody Main Reception Continue on North Wall Quay. You will pass the Convention Centre Dublin on your right hand side and then go through the lights at Samuel Beckett Bridge. A&L Goodbody is the 2nd building on your right. To A&L Goodbody Car Park At the 2nd set of traffic lights on North Wall Quay (at the Hilton Garden Inn), take the right hand turn onto Commons Street, and take the next right onto Mayor Street Lower. Continue straight until you pass the National College of Ireland (NCI) building on your right hand side, and then take the next right. -

Irish Geography 75 The Liffey and a bridge too far: Bridge-building and governance in Dublin 1870-1960 Joseph Brady* School of Geography, UCD, Dublin, Ireland. There are currently 23 bridges over the Liffey westwards from Lucan but only five of them were built east of O’Connell Bridge since 1850 and one is a pedestrian only bridge. This was despite a pressing need for a better system of traffic circulation that was obvious from the middle of the nineteenth century as the city and its docklands continued their eastwards expansion. That need was recognised by the civic authorities but the complex system of local governance with overlapping responsibilities ensured that satisfactory solutions were difficult to achieve. There were issues of power, of funding and of taxation as well as competing needs. Even the naming of bridges could not be easily accomplished. This paper examines the issue of bridge provision from 1880, the year that the widened Carlisle Bridge was reopened as O’Connell Bridge. The main focus of attention will be the initial building of Butt Bridge, its subsequent rebuilding and the intractable problem of building a bridge to the east of Butt Bridge. A novel solution in the form of a transporter bridge was proposed, which would have added a distinctive element to the city’s streetscape but nothing was accomplished in the thirty years to 1960. The city of Dublin during the period 1930-1950 has not been widely studied. Using a variety of sources, newspapers, civic minutes, Oireachtas debates, maps, photographs and graphics, this paper aims to shed light on one important aspect of civic governance and to show how the city might have been transformed had matters been handled in a different way. -

Barry, Dublin City Council and Four Courts Press, 2016, 256 pp., €35 (hbk), ISBN: 978-1-907002-21-2, €25 (pbk), ISBN 978-1- 907002-25-0 A city that develops on both sides of a river is asking for trouble. While rivers are excellent at facilitating transport and travel along them, it is a different story when goods and people have to be transported across them. Kostof (1992)1 noted that many river towns focused development on one bank and even major cities did not have any significant activity on the other bank until modern times because of the problems posed in making river crossings. Buda and Pest are perhaps the best known example of two cities which developed on either side of a river. They had separate existences for most of their history and were not linked by a permanent bridge until 1849. Dublin took another path. Speed’s map of 1610 shows development on both sides of the Liffey, though to a far greater extent on the southside. However, it was the northside property that proved to be attractive to the speculative developers of the late seventeenth and eighteenth century and since then Dublin has had two cores that needed to be connected. -
