Issue 42 October 2016 Voice Free Welcome to issue 42

It’s great to be back in the Editors Chair for Issue 42 October 2016, so many thanks to those who stood in for me in my enforced stay in Hospital. Especially Claire Savill and Chris Nelder. Thank you to you both. So welcome to issue 42 October 2016. Not much changes, well we have 2 Church Walls falling down, another Pony was killed by a speeding motorist who did not stop. Our sports teams had mixed reports and we have the 2nd half our school story. I am told you they see the Voice in the most unusual places. Whilst I was in Musgrove I had to have a small operation, where they make a small hole in your neck and pass a wire down to implant something inside you, One of the nurses jobs was to keep you still and relaxed. What we talked about was the Dulverton schools and the article in the Voice - yet another use for the Voice!

3 Dulverton - the way we were

We are going to give you a series of photographs of old Dulverton in the early part of the last century and later, there will be a different one each month. We would welcome your input and please send your comments to the editor.

Guess where this, and about what year? Send in your answers and in six photos later we will publish an answer with a prize.

Now and Then then can you help the Exmoor Society ?

Since 1958, the Exmoor Society has collected thousands of 35mm slides and over the past two years they have digitised as many of them as possible. They are a valuable record of Exmoor, showing how the landscape has changed gradually (and not so gradually) over the decades. Those that show people, street scenes and livestock also show social changes, creating a continuing record of the moor, its people, landscape and animals, we are retaking these photographs and noting more precisely when and where they were taken. The principle is simple – go to the same spot the old photo was taken and retake it. In practice, the Society’s archivist has found it isn’t always easy to locate the exact same spot! Since we have over 1500 slides depicting locations across the moor, the task is enormous and we are seeking people to get involved and help us retake these historical photographs. So if you fancy doing some detective work and seeing how Exmoor has evolved, please contact the archivist on [email protected] for details of the project. Our Old pictures in the Voice may give thoughts that will help

7 Church Wall …

The Villainous "Church Wall" - Sounds like fiction but its Fact.

The All Saints Church Wall saga continues for yet another year. 5 years and counting. No work will be done this year and the foot path remains closed despite the best effort of the Town Council and local Church.

DTC and the local All Saints Church have been working together in an attempt to get permission from Diocese of Bath & Wells to carryout remedial work on the dangerous Church Wall running alongside a public footpath.

What's it got to do with me and why should I care, I hear you say - well, due to the Law, the maintenance of the church yard walls falls to the town to pay for the upkeep, meaning you and me are stuck with the bill.

On 1st April 2016 (April Fool's day, we should have taken a hint from the date) the DB&W finally got round to issuing a legal document called a Faculty to the DTC/Church. In our terms a Faculty can be thought of as planning permission. It gave permission for work to start for either of the 2 proposed alternatives (it took 6 months of asking before they got round to send us a copy in September).

Hooray, I hear you say.

But the Diocese of Bath & Wells in September informed us that the legal document they had previously issued was an "administration error" and enclosing yet another a Faculty dated on April Fools date (1st April) - two legal document issued on the same day? The accompanying letter told us in no uncertain terms that we could not start work using alternative A, but should go ahead with B. The down side was no "builder" was prepared to quote for B. A fact they are aware of

After an email exchange, the Diocese of Bath & Wells finally emailed asking for written proof that your Town Council was unable to get any engineering companies to quote for B, if we did so, they would possible consider changing the Faculty to authorize alternative A.

Are these demands reasonable - only you can decide

Coming soon the next gripping instalment - watch this space

8 … The other Church Wall

If you have had the opportunity to stroll through the church yard recently you may have noticed the wall between the Old School House (on the left) and All Saints Church Yard has fall down in part. This is a “dry” stone wall which nobody can argue about- it is a fascia wall (the opposite to the notorious “Church Wall” which supports 2m of earth) with the stones set into the earth slope.

Just recent the Diocese of Bath & Wells, “Church Wall” saga in another item of news this month’s, claim by “the rebuttable presumption that they will belong to the church in the absence of any evidence to the contrary.” Unfortunately this being the case it fails to the town to pay up yet again, however in this case permission has been granted by the local church to go ahead up to a certain cost.

On the plus side we hope not to have to deal with the Diocese of Bath & Wells and can get on as the work has been approved.

The second Football half saw Stogursey score a further 3 goals - it was The Football Club has not started well quite a relief for Dulverton when the final whistle blew in the new 2016/17 season. Our first and, obviously, a game to forget! game was played away to newly promoted Ash Rangers in Taunton. We started well, with Captain Dave Kelland eventually scoring. A reversal of fortunes then took place during the second half, when we were simply outpaced. The home team took their chances which resulted in them scoring three goals and three points in the bag. Our first home game of the season is traditionally played in sunshine and we usually win! We got our sunshine but lost badly to our visitors, Stogursey. Unfortunately, on the day, several of our players were unavailable to play and we started the game with the basic number of 11 players and no substitutes. By half-time, we were 2-0 down, both goals being scored from the penalty spot for an identical offence by the same player ! In addition to this, the Referee
