FOLGE 158 SEPTEMBER 2002 ÖSTERREICHER IM EXIL MEXIKO 1938–1947 Der formelle Protest der mexikanischen Regierung vor dem Völkerbund vom 19. März 1938 gegen die deutsche Okkupation Öster- reichs leitete eine aktive und großzügige Solidaritätspolitik Mexikos, insbesondere der Präsidenten Cárdenas und Camacho, gegen- über den Flüchtlingen aus dem „Dritten Reich“ und anderen europäischen Ländern ein. Noch diesen Herbst erscheint die DÖW-Dokumentation „Österreicher im Exil. Mexiko 1938–1947“ und damit nach der Veröffentlichung von Quelleneditionen zum österreichischen Exil in Frankreich (1984), Belgien (1987), Großbritannien (1992), den USA (1995) und der Sowjetunion (1999) eine Sammlung von wissenschaftlich edierten Dokumenten zum Wirken und Schicksal jener Österreicherinnen und Österreicher, die zwischen 1938 und 1945 Zuflucht in Mexiko fanden. Art und Charakter der über 400 hier ab- gedruckten Dokumente sind sehr vielfältig: Erinnerungsberichte, Artikel aus Exilzeitschriften, Akten aus mexikanischen, österreichi- schen, deutschen und amerikanischen Archiven, Briefe, Memoranden und Flugblätter von Einzelpersonen oder Organisationen, Interviews mit ZeitzeugInnen, umfangreiche Nachlässe sowie literarische Zeugnisse u. v. m. Ausführliche und sachkundige Einleitungen begleiten die jeweiligen Kapitel, eine chronikähnliche Zusammenstellung der kulturellen und politischen Veranstaltungen diverser österreichischer Exil-Organisationen in Mexiko bezeugt den nicht unbedeutenden Beitrag zum kulturellen und intellektuellen Leben Mexikos. A Short Survey of Czech Literature
A Short Survey of Czech Literature who later lived as a journalist in Paris, and was close to the Surrealists and avant- James Naughton garde painters such as the Czech Josef Šíma. We thought that the existing design needed freshening up, and I hope the new appearance of the magazine will give you the same pleasure that it has given us. The smaller format and more attractive paper should make for more comfortable reading. This issue of the magazine also comes with a free CD, containing pieces by six contemporary Czech composers, which means that Czech Music Quarterly is now a magazine not just to be read but to be “listened to” as well. The Chamber Music compilation is the fi rst in a series. You can read more about the whole project in the preface to the CD itself and so I here I shall just draw you attention to the article by Miroslav Pudlák, which is related to the CD and highlights some aspects of the contemporary Czech scene in composing. The absolute non-seriousness that characterized grotesque realism became a successful and relatively safe way to talk about the absurdities and the failures of the communist system. This modality, however, was not exclusive to the communist era but stretched back to the Austro-Hungarian era and forward into the Postcommunist times. -

The Films of Věra Chytilová
DEFIANCE AND COMPASSION: THE FILMS OF VĚRA CHYTILOVÁ Tuesday 27 January 2015, London The late great avant-garde Czech film director Věra Chytilová will be celebrated with a season of films at BFI Southbank from 1 – 17 March 2015, marking a year since her death in March 2014. Aside from her experimental farce Daisies (1966), Chytilová’s work is relatively unknown in the UK and this season offers audiences a rare chance to celebrate the life and work of a true original and a pioneer of Czech cinema. Chiytilová’s early cinéma-vérité-style films A Bagful of Fleas (1962) and Ceiling (1962) introduced two main themes demonstrated across her almost 40 year career; the feminine point of view in a world dominated by men and a strong critique of contemporary society. A pioneer of women’s cinema, Chytilová thought it natural to use her female perspective and experience, although she didn’t see herself as a feminist. Never one to hesitate, she played on stereotypes associated with women, exploiting the fear of feminine hysterics and famously threatening to jump out of the window in front of state officials when she struggled to get her unorthodox films financed or released. Chytilová’s best known film Daisies (1966), in which two teenage girls embark on a series of destructive pranks, so shocked the Czechoslovak government that it withheld its release for a whole year. Strong social criticism and experimental form, together with Chytilová’s active criticism of the Soviet occupation led to a ban from studios for six years. Choosing to stay in Czechoslovakia, preferring to ‘battle the system from within its confines’, she returned to work in 1976 after making a personal appeal to the Czechoslovak president Gustáv Husák, who gave her the green light to make The Apple Game (1976). -
Anti-Semitism and Socialism
Marx's Mixed Legacy: Anti- Semitism and Socialism HOW HAVE MARXIST THEORISTS and activists, Socialist parties and Communist States understood Anti-Semitism? How did they confront the rise of fascism in Germany? Spanning the period between The Communist Manifesto and the fall of the Berlin Wall, German historian Mario Kessler’s On Anti-Semitism and Socialism examines the relationship to Jews, and to anti- Semitism, of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Leon Trotsky, other individual Marxists, and various political parties in Germany and the Soviet Union. He traces on theoretical, personal, and political levels, how they have misunderstood fascist and radical right movements from Nazi Germany to the racist violence of the present. His analysis attacks Stalinism, and attempts to assess the implications of this compromised past for the future of Marxist thought. The book has important implications for understanding racism, anti-Semitism, and Marxist theory. The strength of Marxist analysis (and socialist ideology) has always been its vision of social equality, of the abolition of oppression, of a better future. It is largely this vision that has drawn so many Jews to Leftist movements. But in these twelve “Selected Essays,” Kessler, a non-Jewish German historian born and raised in East Germany, shows that certain flaws in the ways that Marx and the Marxists who followed him analyzed Jews, nationalism, and the process of history itself, disabled many of them from predicting the rise of fascism or effectively combating it. Furthermore, he analyzes Socialist and Communist practice, in the Soviet Union and in Germany, both in opposing anti- Semitism, and in promoting it. -
